[nysbirds-l] Update on Ross's Gull from Jack Delehanty

2017-01-30 Thread Joan Collins
Hi Everyone,

Jack Delehanty called to let me know that the Ross’s Gull was back in front
of his house for ½ hour mid-morning. It also continues to occasionally
bathe in the water near the culvert under the road just down the hill past
his house.

Today, I ran into someone that used to work at the Wild Center (natural
history museum of the Adirondacks located in Tupper Lake) and she mentioned
that they feed the Otters Trout – and that they have a lot of fish eggs. I
gave this information to Jack Delehanty also. It would be great if the Wild
Center could donate the fish eggs for the Ross’s Gull for the length of its
visit.

We are going into a cold snap and the rivers and open channels will likely
start to freeze over (it is unusual for them to be open at all at this time
of year, but our winters are rapidly warming and unpredictable…). I don’t
know how this may affect the Ross’s Gull and its movements.

Barry Blust – Jack Delehanty has your eyepiece! (I’ll send you his contact
info.)

[nysbirds-l] Lost scope eyepiece

2017-01-30 Thread Barry Blust
Apparently the eyepiece to my Leica scope came loose and fell off
without me noticing it. I believe this happened on 01/28 after I
observed the Ross's Gull in Tupper Lake. The eyepiece is a Leica
20x-60x zoom lens. If anyone found it please let me know.

Thanks.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck at Swan Lake, Patchogue (Suffolk Co.)

2017-01-30 Thread Ken Feustel
A female or immature male ( a relatively long tuft if seen from a good angle)
Tufted Duck was sleeping with a large (900+) mixed scaup flock on Swan Lake in
Patchogue around 12:00PM. Also present were a pair of Wood Duck. This flock was
by far the largest flock of scaup we have seen on any freshwater pond this
winter. There were a decent number of scaup on Patchogue Lake (150+) as well -
perhaps some recent arrivals. i will post some photos of the sleeping Tufted
Duck on my flickr site later today.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull benefits the Tupper Lake area (no sighting)

2017-01-30 Thread gabriel willow
I just wanted to chime in to agree with Tom's excellent point, and along those
lines, to heartily recommend Larkin's Deli in Tupper Lake.  It looks like an
unprepossessing gas station/general store, but they have incredible food
(breakfast sandwiches and such) and make everything from scratch (and I mean
everything - the bread for the sandwiches, the fudge by the register, and the
most amazing apple fritters I've ever had).
Celebrate your Ross's Gull sighting with an apple fritter, and maybe bring some
back as a consolation prize for your birder friends who don't make it up to see
the bird!  And say hi to Sheila at Larkin's, she's awesome.
Cheers,

very rare bird to mention to everyone in that region that they are
there primarily thanks to that bird's appearance, and of course to
spend $ at many local businesses, and give something to the community

nice opportunity as well for someone, in the area, to work out just
how many visitors are coming to see the rare gull (and other wildlife
and perhaps other attractions) especially how many birders show up in
total thru the full stay of this bird, and then, at least very
roughly, work out how much money may have been spent, given to local
and regional businesses through the big influx -  it may end up being
a very substantial amount!  It sounds as though birders from many
states & at least some provinces are or have been there, and it is
very possible, should the Ross's Gull remain for viewing for some
time, that seekers from countries beyond Canada will come in hopes of
seeing this bird: yes, it's that rare - & a bird that a very many
birders world-wide have not seen (even some who have spent time in the
Arctic regions)!  For those that have time, explore more of the ADK
region; perhaps some other rarity is waiting discovery, and if not,
the whole region is one with many winter wonders.

[nysbirds-l] Kings County white-winged gulls

2017-01-30 Thread Sean Sime
This morning at roughly 7:50am I watched a probable immature Glaucous Gull
fly NE over Kensington towards Prospect Park. I contacted a few local
birders I thought may be out near the park in the hopes it put down on the
lake.
It was reported shortly thereafter sitting on Prospect Lake by Dennis
Hrehowsik.

By the time I was able to get there the Glaucous was gone, but two distinct
first winter Iceland Gulls put down. One was a very pale and robust bird,
relative to the Herring Gulls next to it and a second, smaller and darker
bird with a very dark face.

Good birding,

Sean Sime
Brooklyn, NY

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull YES (Via Kevin McGrath)

2017-01-30 Thread Ryan MacLean
Kevin McGrath just called to tell me that the Ross's is currently sitting on
ice near 1850 NY-30, Tupper Lake. He also provided a dropped pin of the
location:
https://goo.gl/maps/iAKWE7W237k

According to him its sitting on ice at the edge of open water, several other
observers. Now if it can just hang in there for one more day so I can finally
get up there tomorrow
