[nysbirds-l] Swainson's WArbler direction

2017-05-26 Thread Gus Keri
If you are going by car to see the Swainson's Warbler at Prospect park this
weekend, I will tell you what I have been doing for the past 4 years in going
to this park without any problem and you can decide if it suits you.

Most of the time I park my car on the streets near the 16th St. entrance to the
park. (South West side of the park). Parking is easy and it's very easy to get
there (from the BQE to Prospect Expressway and then to 11th Ave).

the only time I had a problem is when there is a marathon or half-marathon and
some of the streets are closed.

After entering the park, walk straight to the Center Drive. Don't go right or
left, you will end up on the West Drive and this is not where you want to be.

Walk on the Center Drive, east-bound, for almost a quarter of a mile.

You will see a bunch of green containers lining the Drive on your left hand
side.

Between (not before or after) these containers there are two paths take you to
behind the containers (north of the Drive). You can take either one and you
will enter the Midwood area immediately. Walk inside some 20-50 yards and that
the area where the bird is located mostly. You will see people gathering and
you won't miss them.

Good luck in seeing or hearing the bird.

Gus

1. I certainly hope the Raven didn’t get mixed up with Pseudomonas
mendocina, sounds gruesome.

2. Just cause you never saw a colony of mastodons doesn’t mean there
weren’t any.

:)

Parking is difficult, traffic is congested, and it is easy to reach us by
subway.  The closest subway station is Prospect Park on the B and Q trains
(only Q runs on the weekend).  Stay towards the front of the train if you’re
coming from Manhattan, turn right as you exit the station on Lincoln Rd. and
you will see the park across Ocean Avenue.  The Midwood, current location of
the warbler, is just to the right (north) once you get into the park.  Follow
the East Drive until you meet Center Drive, the walk left (west).
You can also take the F, G or 2 train, and walk through the park.  There are
many maps around the park, along with PEPs and other park workers who can
direct you.

If you’re coming this afternoon keep in mind that Ocean Avenue becomes two
lanes of traffic southbound at 4PM, so no parking on that side.  There are
always many events in the park on the weekend, especially Smorgasburg on
Sunday, which brings lots of crowds and traffic.
Thank you.  Good luck getting the bird.  Last one was 1950.

Yesterday's storm coupled with a new moon high tide completely flooded the
marsh. It probably also washed out any nests already there. This morning the
marsh was still mostly under water just after high tide when I arrived.. As a
result the land birds normally in the marsh were mostly confined the the path
edges. Around the pond marsh birds were calling and/or singing and also nicely
visible. There were a number of shorebirds also feeding..

   Of interest:--
Clapper Rail, 2
Saltmarsh Sparrow, several
Seaside Sparrow, several
Other birds in the marsh
Osprey
Black-crowned Night-Heron, 2 fly over
Great Egret

Re: [nysbirds-l] No sighting-Parking info request Swainsons

2017-05-26 Thread Daisy Lane Paul
Street parking is available on most of the streets surrounding the edges of
the park, just make sure to check the parking signs carefully for street
cleaning days/times. Your best bet might be to park on Ocean Ave and enter
the park at Lincoln Road, then just walk up East Drive a little ways until
you reach Center Drive.

Parking on Prospect Park Southwest along the west edge of the park would
also work well if you're coming from that direction.

Note that parking is NOT permitted in the visitor parking lot inside the
park during this season and you could get ticketed in that lot.

Good luck!

The Swainson's Warbler was seen about 30 minutes ago in same location as
before, foraging in the patch of woods where a large fallen tree lies right
next to a woodchip path. It showed briefly up close, but then vanished and
I haven't seen it again since. Not a lot of people around, except a shady
guy with a bike who did a lit of staring.
