[nysbirds-l] Caspian Terns, Southaven County Park (Suffolk) - YES
The two Caspian Terns found by Chris Gangemi two days ago continue on the Carmans River. They put on a great show late this afternoon between the boat launch and lower part of the river, one bird catching a large fish which it eventually managed to swallow after flying around with it for a couple minutes, half the fish hanging out of its bill. There was a different kind of swallow spectacle going on as well, with 5 species of swallow (Barn, Tree, Rough-winged, Bank and Purple Martin, in order of abundance, high to low), foraging their way up and downstream. [nysbirds-l] Queens County Grasshopper sparrow - Alley Pond Park
Grasshopper sparrow at Alley Pond Park (April 29) at 9:30am, in Northern Queens County. Seen at the Northern edge of the football field closest to Douglaston parkway parking lot. It flew up from the mowed grass and perched in a small tree next to the two green team benches. It was a hanging out with chipping sparrow, at the trailing end of a flock of about 30 chipping sparrow. The flock was moving East towards the Baseball field and parking lot. I Could not find the bird again. [nysbirds-l] Croton Point
Charlie Roberto and I had a pretty good morning at the Point. Best bird was an adult little blue heron quite uncommon on the river side (usually those that show up are young birds in fall). It landed briefly in maintenance yard by ball field and took off up river. We tried chasing it a bit up north without success. Another highlight was 28 bonaparte’s gulls in croton bay. Migrants included towhees, rc kinglets, yellow, palm, black and white and parula warblers, marsh wren, blue headed vireo, about 30 savannah sparrows and a spotted sandpiper. L. [nysbirds-l] Odds and ends in Buffalo 4-28-18
Yesterday I was able to get to Times Beach and Tifft for a bit, highlights included: *American Bittern*: *1* at Times Beach initially seen by Josh Ketry a couple days back and *2* at Tifft. I miss this bird some years, I was surprised to have 3 in 1 day! *Cliff Swallow*: *1* a Tifft (Kevin Rybczynski has 2 others at Tifft) I had *5 Yellow-rumped* and 1 Palm Warbler at Tifft (I think several people had reported Palm at Tifft - Sue Barth, the Bertolas and others) *White-throated Sparrows*: *93* at Tifft - I think this was the tip of the iceberg. Moving by the dozens between the footbridge and Old Tifft St. I don't recall ever seeing numbers like this. Still lingering at Tifft were *5 Common Loons* and *9 Horned Grebes*. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
