[nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler - Kingston, Ulster County

2018-12-12 Thread Richard Guthrie
A lady from Kingston, Ulster County called in to my radio show this
afternoon saying that she thought she was seeing a female Painted Bunting
in her yard (actually landing and pecking at the windshield of her car).

She later sent me photos - which as it turns out were of an Orange-crowned
Warbler.

The lady, Rebecca Schweitzer, has since entered the sighting in eBird -
with all the photos attached.

Orange-crowned Warbler is a good find for Ulster County anytime of year -
but even more so in December.

There are a few records of OCWA in the Kingston area over the last decade
or so.

I recall another Ulster County winter record of one coming to a backyard
feeder near Rosendale many years ago.

[nysbirds-l] Evening Grosbeak, Central Park, NYC Wed., 12/12

2018-12-12 Thread Thomas Fiore
Wednesday, 12 December, 2018 -

Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

At least one adult male Evening Grosbeak appeared in the northeeast quadrant of
Central Park, seen & photographed by multiple observers in the mid-day period,
near a composting area and just to the west by the East Park Drive (park
roadway). This is the 2nd known documented, multi-observer sighting of the
species this year, the first having also been a single, but not an adult male.
That was also found in the northern part of the park & was apparently a
“one-day wonder”. Thanks to T. Zahner & others for photos & reports on the
Evening Grosbeak of Wed., 12/12.

Many other birds have been found continuing in New York County (in which
Central Park is located), & among these are a very impressive diversity &
number of owls, with Barred Owl in particular appearing in greater numbers than
previously known for the county. This is certainly correlated with the many of
that owl species being seen in parts of central & southern New England &
elsewhere, and unfortunately has also been reflected in a high mortality in
some areas but hopefully not in Manhattan. The upcoming CBC for NY County may
possibly reveal more & should also be interesting for various other
possibilities - irruptive finches amongst those.

good end of autumn birding,
