[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest Woodcock, Whip-poor-wills, and more
While herping this evening the woodcock was back at his usual courting place next to the upper parking lot at the visitor center. He made some sounds I had not heard them make before. A very accomidating bird. Also had a first for me there, at least three Whip-poor-wills calling just after dark. Didn't know they were nesting there. Suppose they might have been passing through, but they seemed to be on territory. Nice. Also had two species of a family of birds we're not allowed ot mention here. [nysbirds-l] Riverhead Lazuli Bunting
The adult male Lazuli Bunting being seen at 27 Royal Ave in Riverhead, NY, was still there as of about 1230pm. It evidentily comes about every hour or so from behind the left side of the home and then into the crapemyrtle on the left side of the home to the feeder next to it. [nysbirds-l] Bronx Townsend's Warbler possible hybrid
After looking at my poor photos of the Townsend's Warbler I posted earlier on here, it looks like it may be a hybrid. I just assumed it was a Townsend's/Hermit hybrid, but someone on iNaturalist suggested it looked more like a Black-throated Green Warbler/Townsend's hybrid since it had a white throat and very little yellow in the breast. I thought some Townsend's/Hermit hybrids had white on the throat, but I don't know. It also doesn't have yellow on the vent area which from what I read all Black-thoated Greens have. [nysbirds-l] Eagle at Hmart in WhitePLains!
I was driving down Central Ave. in White Plains about an hour ago passing Hmart when I was quite surprised to see a juvenile Bald Eagle flying in circles about 100 feet or so above the road. It was being semi-harassed by a bunch of crows. It was also seen around 10am this morning by my father in the same place. I also had what was probably the same bird on California Rd. at the intersection with Bevan Pl. next to Twin Lakes in Eastchester yesterday sitting in a tree waiting to come down to a dead rabbit in the road. In 50 years living in the area I have never seen an eagle in either area and certainly not so close. Obviously they are not as scared of people as they used to be. Pretty neat. [nysbirds-l] White-winged Juncos
Hi all, Does anyone know how common Slate-colored Juncos with white wing bars are? Over the years I've seen a few in NY that have them but otherwise look like Slate-coloreds. Today I had another I observered for awhile at Ward Acres Park in New Rochelle that sure looked good for White-winged Juco, but I always have Slate-coloreds with wing bars in the back of my mind. [nysbirds-l] Shirley Chisholm S.P. question
Hi all, I see that the Penn and Fountain Ave. landfills have been made into the Shirley Chisholm S.P. Glad they finally opened it up to the public. I worked there for a year in '06 and '07 while it was still being capped and was wondering if anyone knows who I can contact to see if they are interested in a list of birds/wildlife seen there for that period. I have a large list with some goodies on it. [nysbirds-l] Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher at Wave Hill?
Just got back from Wave Hill in the bronx and the woman at the gate who was closing up said it wasn't seen since this am. A shame it was never posted here. Only saw it posted to the FB group and that was hours later. Shame shame on these people who don't post here and don't post on the FB group until hours later. [nysbirds-l] Clements checklist updates?
Hi all, I was trying to find the Clements Checklist updates for 2021 and wasn't able to. Usually there's a place to click and get the updates on the Cornell site but now all there is is just a place to get the whole list which I don't want. Anytime I found a place that I could click on that said August 2021 updates it would send me to the whole list or something else. Anyone know what happened to the updates? That was very usefull for updating my book. A shame if they got rid of them. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] precise directions to Anhinga in Orangeburgh, NY
I don't know if the Anhinga is still there but as seen on my previous original posts I had it where Tim had it earlier today on the south part of the reservoir between Convent Rd. and Veterans Memorial Dr. and east of Blue Hill Rd. I saw it from the fishing parking lot on the north shore of the lake on Convent. Now that I'm home I can give detailed directions. To get there take Town line Rd. from the Palisades Parkway east to Sickletown Rd. then south to where Sickletown turns left and Blauvelt goes strait. Sickletown then curves left and becomes Convent soon after passing Blue Hill Rd. on the right. Once on Convent you will see the lake on the right and the fishing lot on the left. Park in the lot and look at the far south side scanning all the dead trees there. The female was sitting about halfway up in a dead tree the whole time I was there. Good luck and thanks for all who posted and special thanks to the original finder. Finally got my Neotropic Cormorant and Anhinga for NY. Yeah. Andrew Andrew v. F. F. [nysbirds-l] Extralimital Curlew Sandpiper male in Stratford, CT
Just posting for anyone who wants to see a gorgeous sandpiper at Short Beach Golf Course on Short Beach Rd. in Stratford, CT. A gorgeous male Curlew Sandpiper is in the little cattail pond as seen from Short Beach Rd. The pond is on the left after turning right onto Short Beach Rd. from Dorne Dr. off Rte. 113. Can't park on that road but the side roads are parkable. A beautiful bird, my second and first breeding plumage one. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] vulture nest nomore
Well, just saw today that the confirmed black vulture nest in Scarsdale is no more. They started tearing the home down today. Only seen the adults receently so think the chick didn't make it. Seems a little early for fledging. Maybe not but you'd think it would be with the adults still if it had fledged in the last few weeks. Of course DEC was useless, totally blew me off when I reported it back in early June. A shame they don't care more. Not surprised though. I hope the adults find a new place next year. It was fun while they were there. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] confirmed for sure Black Vulture nesting
Just wanted to update that the Black Vultures in the abandoned home on Seely Place in Scarsdale do indeed have at least one chick. I was informed by the tree crew cutting down trees on around the house that their boss photographed at least one chick. I was inquiring what they were doing and was told the new owners of the property are going to tear down the house in a few days and needed the trees cleared out around it:-( They told me that the boss was going to contact someone about the chicks, but they didn't say who. So I took it upon myself to contact DEC and let them know what was going on. Of course I was told they can do what they want around the house but if the home is being torn down then maybe the DEC will come out and get the chicks. The officer said he'd have to check into it:-( You'd think they'd know right away what to do. At least he was nice and seemed to take me seriously:-) He said he'd call me back if he needed to. I will call back to find out what happened after the holiday. Andrew Andrew v. F.
