[nysbirds-l] new yard bird in Yonkers
Just had a Black Vulture circling over my neighbors home for a new yard bird. Number 71 in six years, not to bad. Surprisingly I haven't had a Turkey yet. Soon I'm sure. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Summer Tanager in Wappinger Falls
I just saw on the Orange Co. list that there's a Summer Tanager in Wappingers Falls that's evidently been around for awhile at a private feeder. Nice photos on the eBird report. A shame it's a private residence since I go by the road it's on periodically. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] 3 wren day in Cold Spring!
Went to the West Pt. Foundry Preserve today in Cold Spring and had 4 Carolina Wrens, a Winter Wren, and a House Wren. This is by far the latest/earliest I've ever had a House Wren in NY, let alone the northeast. Never had a 3 wren day in winter. Very cool. Also had two Eastern Bluebirds, an imm. Bald Eagle, 6 Common Mergansers, and a Belted Kingfisher. Andrew Andrew v. F. The Yellow-breasted Chat was still at Marshlands Conservancy in Rye this morning. It was around the pond at first and then moved around by the road for awhile giving point blank looks and great photo ops. Thanks to Tom, Gail and Suzanne for the help in finding it. Andrew Andrew v. [nysbirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak in Mamaroneck
I went to look for the Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the private residence in Mamaroneck after looking for the chat at Marshlands which I missed. As soon as I got there the birds at the feeders flushed up onto the fence and the grosbeak was there for a minute before diving into the shrubs and out of site. It should hang around til sunday for the count I'd think. Hopefully they'll get it. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] King Eider, Gr. White-fronted Goose, no Emperor Goose or Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Went out today looking for these species and had some good luck. The female King Eider at Sterling Forest S.P. in Tuxedo is still there showing nicely at the south end of the lake, but better to bring scope if it's not in close. It's viewed from the road to the slightly to the left after turning onto the entrance road to the headquarters from Long Meadow Rd. People are not allowed to drive down this private road as it is marked, but you can park at the beginning on the left where the pull out is. Then walk along the road til you get to the first opening by the lake on the right and you're there. It was seen about half way out in the water. I also went to look for the Greater White-fronted Goose in Rye Brook and found it at the usual spot south of Bowman Ave. The Emperor Goose I seem to keep missing. I checked The Tarrytown Reservoirs, White PLains H.S., and the golf course east of Hathaway Lane in White Plains with no success. I'm starting to think it's a ghost. I did have two juvenile eagles, many Common Mergansers, and Buffleheads among others on the lakes at the different spots besides all the geese. Lastly I was alerted to a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at a private residence in Mamaroneck that was around for 4 days until 2 days ago. Evidentily it's hasn't shown for the last two days. Oh well. [nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted & Emperor Goose in s. Westchester
The Greater White-fronted Goose that was at the pond south of Bowman Ave. in Rye Brook last winter is back with the Canada Goose flock. One of the Canada Geese has an all black head. The previously reported Emperor Goose in White Plains at the abandoned golf course off Hathaway Lane was not there today even though a large flock of Canada Geese was there. On the pond were many Mallards, some Buffleheads, American Black Ducks, some Hooded Mergansers. Andrew Andrew v. F. I was just wondering if anyone knows how unusual it is to have Great Black-backed Gulls on Lake George. [nysbirds-l] cool Bald Eagle sightings
While fishing today at the edge of the Rio Reservoir north of Port Jervis I had an adult Bald Eagle land next to the road about 100 feet to the right of me and just sit there for a couple of minutes until some moron came by in a truck and scared it off. Soon after an immature dove for a fish in the reservoir about 200 feet to the left of me while being harassed by a Red-winged Blackbird. All during this time a pair of Northern Watersnakes kept me company. Got to love the country:-) Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Great Vly WMA King Rail - no & extralimital Yellow Rail
Went to look for the King Rail that was reported in Great Vly WMA in Saugerties, Ulster Co., but after two hours there not a sound from it. Did have other nice birds though and a Spotted Turtle. If anybody is interested the extralimital Yellow Rail in Old Saybrook, CT, is still there. Might be one of the few times you can get a fairly easy Yellow Rail around here if at all. I went for it the other day and ended up with three species of rail! Nice. If anyone needs more info let me know. Andrew Andrew v. F. Went to look for the previously reported Stilt Sandpiper at PBP in the rain this afternoon. Didn't see it but did have several Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plovers, and Least Sandpipers in the Turtle Cove. Also had a large raccoon in the flats feeding. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Black Vulture low over Edgemont H.S.
While passing by Edgemont H.S. I noticed a Black Vulture low over the school. I have seen a pair of them fairly regularly in the vicinity over the last few years so they must be breeding somewhere nearby. I would love to find the nest. Very cool. Andrew Andrew v. F.
