[nysbirds-l] UPDATE: Camel Farm issue, Orange Co.

2023-04-26 Thread Anne Swaim
(Posted on behalf of people who are tracking this issue. Please pass along
to other bird lists.)

PSA: Follow Up on Camel Farm

Two events set in motion the recent events at this location and owner’s
immediate desire to fill ponds:

1)Unsafe parking on Rt 62 almost caused a truck to hit parked car, and
2) birders being rude to landowner.

Requests: Pull all the way over on Rt 62. View birds for a few minutes and
leave. Owner doesn’t want birders there for hours or every day.

Note: owner did put in a gravel parking path for birders on William Lain
Rd. It is across from the white house (longer distance to view ponds.
Please do not be rude to farmers.

Owner will not fill in ponds, but she wanted to be clear and wanted to make
this understood:
“I made these ponds and will fill them in. I like birds. I have two other
ponds they can go to.” (Unfortunately not accessible.)

Please keep in mind that birder actions have consequences and please do not
ruin this for
 1) birds and 2) other birders. Thank you.

[nysbirds-l] Do not bird Camel Farm Tue, please

2023-04-24 Thread Anne Swaim
(Please pass along this important notice to other birding groups in the
region.)

PSA: there has been a Wilson’s Phalarope at the Camel Farm in Orange
County.

The farm owner has been concerned about recent birding activity and plans
to fill the ponds on Wednesday to thwart any future birding there.

There are plans to meet with the farmer tomorrow (Tue) to discuss concerns.

Please consider NOT BIRDING there tomorrow, Tue Apr 25, to avoid escalating
the situation.

Consider the immediate possibility of losing this seasonal pond habitat.

(Message posted on behalf of other concerned birders.)

Re: [nysbirds-l] ebird question

2021-08-08 Thread Anne Swaim
As I understand it and as seems to be reflected in eBird link below, video
upload is not yet an option for eBird checklists, except for a small sample
subset of accounts.

[nysbirds-l] Purple Martins Return Today to Croton Point

2021-04-07 Thread Anne Swaim
Glad for eBird report by Michael Grossman this morning of two Purple
Martins on the nesting tower by the entrance booth at Croton Point Park.

Fifth year for martin occupancy at this tower, established by Saw Mill
River Audubon with funding support from the Feed the Birds store in
Croton-on-Hudson and the Westchester Parks Foundation.

Of note is a second nesting tower up for third year at Rockwood Hall State
Park to the south along the Hudson. Last year, second year, this tower
also attracted nesting Purple Martins so hopefully they will have returns
this year as well.

(Note that one martin decoy is present on both towers and both decoys have
inadvertently been eBirded in past years...)

[nysbirds-l] Upcoming Breeding Bird Atlas Webinars

2021-03-03 Thread Anne Swaim
The second year of the NY State Breeding Bird Atlas is underway. In
addition to monthly Atlas Town Halls online, there are several webinars to
learn about the Atlas.

Visit the Atlas calendar <https://ebird.org/atlasny/about/events> to get
details and Zoom links and also view other scheduled events:
https://ebird.org/atlasny/about/events

Here are some upcoming highlights.

*March Town Hall - **NEXT Monday, March 8, 7:00 – 8:00pm*
Every month from now through August we'll focus on an atlas skill and
follow it up with a Town Hall meeting so you can ask questions and connect
with other atlasers. This month we'll demonstrate key steps in how to make
an Atlas plan. The demo will be followed by an open Q where you can ask
questions about Atlas planning or any other Atlas topic that's been on your
mind.

*About the Atlas - **Thursday, March 25, 7:00 – 8:00pm*
We've just started the second year of NY BBA III! This workshop will cover
the history of the atlas, the importance of atlas data and how you can get
involved. Whether you are a beginner or advanced birder, this unique
opportunity will strengthen your bird watching skills while contributing
valuable data to a large conservation-oriented project.

*April Town Hall - Season 2 Kickoff and Q & A -* *Wednesday, April 7, 6:30
- 8:30pm*
Every month from now through August we'll focus on an atlas skill and
follow it up with a Town Hall meeting so you can ask questions and connect
with other atlasers. The demo will be followed by an open Q

*Breeding Codes - **Thursday, April 15, 7:00 – 8:00pm*
Every time you’re out birding, you’re observing bird behavior. It could be
a song, some territorial squabble, or even a bird building a nest. Matching
bird behaviors to specific codes is all you have to do to atlas! In this
webinar we'll review the various breeding categories and codes. There will
be quizzes.

*Atlasing with eBird - **Thursday, April 22, 7:00 – 8:00pm*
Data is collected for the Atlas using the Atlas Portal on eBird. Learn what
the portal is and why it’s important to use. This webinar is appropriate
for those who have never used eBird or for seasoned eBird users who have
never used the Atlas Portal.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park sightings, Westchester County

2019-10-28 Thread Anne Swaim
Some notable birds were seen on Saw Mill River Audubon's regular 4th Monday
bird walk at Croton Point Park this morning.

*Seen on the grassland landfill were*
Wilson Snipe (2)
American Pipit (40+)
Horned Lark (2)
Vesper Sparrow (12+)

*eBird summary here of this morning's Saw Mill River Audubon field trip:*
*https://ebird.org/checklist/S60996136

Also noted: last evening just at dusk, three Eastern Meadowlarks were seen
atop the landfill.

*Additional Notes on Croton Point Grassland Restoration *
Much of the landfill has now been disked with turned up soil, as part of
the two-year restoration project, and it will be interesting to see how the
usual migrant and overwintering birds respond to these altered conditions.
There are refugia of standing native grasses on both the west and east
sides of the landfill that will remain undisturbed during the restoration
project.

All bird views above were from the main paths.

A reminder, please, for visiting birders/photographers not to walk on any
of the side gravel berms or across the landfill itself, as is posted on
park signs.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park this morning

2019-08-30 Thread Anne Swaim
In case helpful to pass along, this week's planned mowing of the Croton
Point Park capped landfill grasslands is part of a two-year restoration
plan designed by Larry Weaner Landscape Associates. (Vegetation has not
been removed from the site.)

*Quick overview of project* (from local media story last spring before
project start)
https://patch.com/new-york/ossining/croton-point-grasslands-restoration-project-timeline-talk

*Further details from Westchester County Soil & Water Conservation
District's 2019 Work Plan*
*Croton Point Park Grassland Restoration Project: The restoration of nearly
100 acres of grassland covering the former Croton Landfill at Croton Point
Park in Croton-on-Hudson was designed in late 2018. Construction will begin
in 2019.The grassland, or meadow, is currently characterized as a mosaic of
plant populations and communities with most dominated by ecologically
undesirable vegetation, such as non-native cool season grasses and invasive
and non-native mugwort. The goal is to transform the meadow into an
ecologically diverse community of plants, which will encourage overall
biological diversity, especially of beneficial insects and birds. The
restoration of each patch of vegetation will have to be handled differently
in order to achieve the best overall results. For example, some patches
will need to be frequently mowed on a temporary basis while others will
need to be treated with herbicide to eradicate dominant plants. Most
patches will need to be re-seeded with mixes of desirable grasses and
forbs. The grassland is viewed by naturalists as critically important to
many species of birds using the Atlantic Flyway, the migratory route for
birds traveling up and down the East Coast. Many other birds, including the
bald eagle, also use Croton Point Park, the largest peninsula in the Hudson
River. The project is funded by a $500,000 state grant to the
District, which will be used for construction. The District is using
additional state funding and other revenue to finance project planning,
design and construction management.A Planning Department staff person will
manage the project on behalf of the District and Westchester County*

2019-05-14 Thread Anne Swaim
Prothonotary Warbler just relocated, 2nd day, Oscawana Island, Crugers,
Westchester.

Of note: this small Hudson River overlook, b/n Croton Point and George’s Island
(Google map link below), has had a very good diversity of warblers these past
two cold, rainy days including multiple Cape May, Blackpoll, as well as many
other sp.

Google link
Oscawana Island
Crugers, NY 10520

If visiting, enter roadside gate, walk on the only, main trail across creek and
turn L at T intersection to go uphill into oak wooded ridge above RR tunnel
below. Protho has been in those upper young oak woods by chimney ruins.

Protho relocated by Karalyn Lamb just now. Seen yesterday by Ryan MacLean and
Anne Swaim. My eBird list yesterday:

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Sightings & Landfill Grassland Project Begun

2019-04-23 Thread Anne Swaim
Surprisingly still relatively quiet today: only warbler was ongoing Pine
Warbler singing/seen in pines between RV Campground and Croton Bay. Big
influx of House Wrens this morning singing in every corner and uptick of
singing Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers and Eastern Towhee. Small kettle (11)
Broad-winged Hawks seen mid-day. Two American Kestrels seen hunting the
native grass areas of the landfill. (A Northern Harrier, a grey ghost, was
seen by other birders yesterday on the grassland.)

Two male Purple Martins arrived today, singing and entering gourds on
nesting structure by park entrance booth. (Third year for this project;
here's hoping for another successful nesting year.)

Of note: a 2nd martin nesting structure was added this spring, at Rockwood
Hall State Park, ~4.5 mi S, in hopes of establishing a 2nd Westchester
County Purple Martin colony.

Also as a heads up to regional birders: the Croton Point Park landfill
grassland restoration project has now begun with most of the landfill
grassland mown this spring with exception of flagged areas of native
grasses. The main path was closed temporarily today while targeted spraying
for smooth bromegrass was done. This is the start of a two-year project.
Saw Mill River Audubon is encouraging signage on site -- to be added soon
-- to explain the project. More info below, if of interest.

Brief project overview: Using state funding to its Soil and Water
Conservation District, the County of Westchester is restoring grassland
atop the former landfill at Croton Point Park. Larry Weaner Landscape
Associates has designed this project and will be overseeing its
implementation. The project is intended to curb less desirable, invasive
plants in favor of more ecologically friendly native plants to improve
wildlife habitat, especially for grassland birds.

Thursday, May 23, 7:00pm at the Croton Free Library, Saw Mill River Audubon
is hosting a public program to overview this project including a Q with
presenters Larry Weaner and Jenna Webster, of Larry Weaner Landscape
Associates.

Ongoing, Saw Mill River Audubon is glad to field questions or comments
about this project and pass along any concerns, as may be helpful. We have
been closely following the project plans and were invited to offer input,
including referencing eBird records of grassland bird use of the project
site, with ongoing thanks to all who eBird their visits to Croton Point
Park.

Ross’s Goose described below still present at same location first light.

Thanks Tom and Gail!

Also noting that many geese from night flocks in this location have been seen
shifting over to lawns in and adjacent waters to Croton Point Park after early
morning.

So here’s hoping this bird does same and is visible in those locations if not
still at boat ramp for others to see later this am.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park Today: Sparrows and More

2018-10-22 Thread Anne Swaim
Sparrows galore on 4th Monday Saw Mill River Audubon bird walk at Croton
Point today with 10 sparrow species seen on main walk:
Chipping (2),
Field (1),
White crowned (5),
White-throated (21),
Vesper (6),
Savannah (12),
Song (92),
Lincoln's (2 total, 1 on main walk and 1 by another observer),
and Swamp (at least 11),
as well as a few Dark-eyed Juncos now.

Separate observers reported a Clay-Colored Sparrow as well in grasslands
between landfill and Croton Bay.

Two Eastern Meadowlarks seen twice flying together over landfill
grasslands.

Small flock of Pipits (7), many Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, a couple
of American Kestrels and a Northern Harrier also on landfill grasslands.

At the end of our walk, we observed an interesting territorial-like display
by pair of adult Bald Eagles vocalizing and flying together and interacting
with a third adult, perhaps a passing migrant (?). A pair of adult Bald
Eagles has been consistently seen around Croton Point this year through
spring and summer. A fourth adult and a subadult Bald Eagle were also seen
earlier in the walk.

Two Pectoral Sandpipers with one lingering Semipalmated Sandpiper
continuing in the wetland area by ballfield. [High count of each observed
of over past week has been 10 Pectoral Sandpipers and 3 Semipalms.]
Greater Yellowlegs in puddle in fenced parking lot behind ballfield parking
at end of the walk.

Other sightings on walk eBird list here:

[nysbirds-l] Kentucky Warbler singing: Rockefeller State Park Preserve

2018-05-14 Thread Anne Swaim
Just as a heads up to birders in Westchester area:

*A Kentucky Warbler was heard singing for several minutes early today at
Rockefeller State Park Preserve* (b/n ~6:20-6:30am.)

However it was not heard later this morning during Saw Mill River Audubon's
regular 2nd Monday walk. The eBird list from that rather cold & chilly
walk is here: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S45664959

Kentucky Warbler was heard in wet shrubby valley located between Old Sleepy
Hollow Road Trail and Nature's Way, i.e. SW of main parking area, about 1/2
way along Nature's Way to Glacial Erratic (RSPP trail map here:

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park, Westchester, Spring Advancing

2018-03-26 Thread Anne Swaim
Saw Mill River Audubon's Woodcock Walk last night at Croton Point Park,
led by Charlie Roberto, heard and saw at least five American Woodcock in
their display flights. First peent was around 7:20pm.

Another highlight was a big movement of Tree Swallows seen at dusk coming
into Croton Bay, estimated at ~1,000. Likely headed for night roost in the
nearby phragmites stands.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park, Westchester, Spring Advancing

2018-03-26 Thread Anne Swaim
Saw Mill River Audubon's Woodcock Walk last night at Croton Point Park,
led by Charlie Roberto, heard and saw at least five American Woodcock in
their display flights. First peent was around 7:20pm.

Another highlight was a big movement of Tree Swallows seen at dusk coming
into Croton Bay, estimated at ~1,000. Likely headed for night roost in the
nearby phragmites stands.

First of spring Osprey fly-over at dusk as well. eBird list here:

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture movement & other sightings, Rockefeller SPP, Westchester County

2018-02-12 Thread Anne Swaim
We observed an interesting movement of 19 Black Vultures at Rockefeller
State Park Preserve this morning on Saw Mill River Audubon's 2nd Mon bird
walk there.

Twelve drifting together north and 7 others seen around the Swan Lake
area.

There have been good numbers of Black Vultures with the Turkey Vulture
roost just 6 mile N by the Village of Croton-on-Hudson but not as many BLVU
recorded there in last couple of months with the temperature swings.

Noted this ref in Cornell's Birds of North America online resource: "Black
Vultures also engage in short-term, local movements when weather becomes
unfavorable, retiring ahead of adverse conditions and returning when
conditions improve."
https://birdsna.org/Species-Account/bna/species/blkvul/distribution

Among other observations this morning at RSPP were:
* a small group of six Snow Geese headed northwest over Swan Lake,
* Northern Cardinals and Song Sparrows both now singing,
* and -- always enjoyable -- great looks at three adult Bald Eagles.

[nysbirds-l] Waterfowl concentration on Croton Reservoir, Westchester

2018-01-03 Thread Anne Swaim
With freeze up of other waters, concentration of waterfowl happening on New

eBird list from this afternoon:

With thanks to Charlie Roberto for heads up on this. Charlie also spotted
American Wigeon and Lesser Scaup earlier today.

(Can access Aqueduct Road off Route 134 just E of Taconic Parkway in Town
of Yorktown. Take care stopping and walking on this narrow road along the
reservoir shoreline since some people drive rather fast on this road.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Rough-legged Hawk, etc

2017-12-28 Thread Anne Swaim
A light morph Rough-legged Hawk was seen hunting Croton Point Park landfill
grasslands this afternoon, viewed from entrance road by the park office.

A Snowy Owl made a brief stopover at Croton Point on Christmas Day, seen by
birders on Saw Mill River Audubon's Monday walk. First spotted by Karalyn
Lamb who was also birding in the park that morning. Observed for several
minutes at a distance and then left undisturbed, it apparently moved on
within the hour -- perhaps with the high winds of the approaching cold
front -- since it was not re-found.

Big increase in waterfowl noted on edges of Croton Reservoir this morning
especially along Route 100 with larger numbers of Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded
and Common Mergansers seen. Smaller water areas and reservoir bays iced up.

However, a drive today from George's Island down to Croton Point resulted
in only two Bald Eagle sightings along the Hudson. Hopefully more to come.

[nysbirds-l] Rockefeller State Park Preserve (Westchester County)

2017-09-10 Thread Anne Swaim
W
arbler movement has been quite good at Rockefeller State Park Preserve,
Westchester County with 18 species of warblers reported yesterday between
various birders. One eBird list here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39079881

Others recent RSPP lists here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L299350/activity

Biggest concentrations of migrants frequenting these areas:
(1) on highest and flat part of Overlook Trail around stands of
Japanese-Angelica (*Aralia elata) *an invasive known to draw in warblers
like Tennessee and Black-throated Blue,

(2) on the southern portion of Ash Tree Loop, and

(3) on northwestern corner of Swan Lake
along Brothers' Path, often good spot early morning.

Trail map here:
https://parks.ny.gov/parks/attachments/RockefellerTrailMap.pdf

Other info in case of interest to some:

Rockefeller SPP does get quite busy with walkers by mid morning. There is
$6/vehicle parking fee collected (Apr-Oct) after you enter the main lot,
via automated kiosk, unless you have NYS State Park sticker or, for those
eligible, if you get a senior pass from office 9:00am-4:30pm.

Another (free) entry point is to park on Old Sleepy Hollow Road, also good
for accessing the Pocantico/Eagle Hill trails. Google link here to that
spot: https://goo.gl/maps/j7vKJfmq9t92

Tend to be less walkers in this part of the preserve.

Main gate was open for entry pre-dawn; we entered ~5:45am.

Saw Mill River Audubon offers free bird walks at RSPP on 2nd & 3rd Mondays

Next SMRA bird walks at RSPP
2nd Monday, 9/11 next, 7:30am from main parking

3rd Monday, 9/18 next, 7:30am from Sleepy Holllow Rd trails entrance

[nysbirds-l] Confirmed Red-headed Woodpecker breeding, Muscoot Farm, Westchester

2017-07-03 Thread Anne Swaim
Both an adult and a nearby, calling juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker were seen at
Muscoot Farm, Westchester County, this morning at the very end of Saw Mill
River Audubon's regular 1st Monday bird walk.

Uncertain is whether another pair reported this year in southern part of county
were also confirmed breeding?

Or perhaps this is (one of) the first confirmed county breeding record(s) for
some time?

The birds seemed to be most present along the strip of woods between the main
parking lot and Route 100.

[nysbirds-l] Dusk Walk at Croton Point Park

2017-06-21 Thread Anne Swaim
Saw Mill River Audubon's Summer Solstice walk tonight atop the Croton Point
Park landfill grasslands (7:30-9:15pm) not only offered scope viewing of
three moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn but interesting observations
of three grassland birds singing at dusk:

* Grasshopper Sparrows (5)
four different birds were seen & heard singing, another seen chasing one of
the singers between 7:30-8:30pm. Also interesting to hear their extended
chittering song at dusk (~9:00pm)
* Eastern Meadowlarks (2)
pair seen flying by ~8:15pm & one heard singing at dusk
* Bobolinks (8)
at least two females & six males seen, males singing between 7:45-8:45pm

A morning check of the landfill grasslands ~7:30am twice this week had only
Bobolinks singing. But both Grasshopper Sparrows & Eastern Meadowlarks were
easily heard tonight.

Also from visit this morning: five Purple Martins were continuing to visit
and sing from the perches of the new martin nesting structure across from
the park office. Two were observed going in the gourds, one carrying plant
material.

Additional note: Croton Point Park officially closes at dusk and park
staff does make rounds to move visitors out at that point. This walk had
special permission to stay a bit later. Best bet if visiting late in the
day is to park in the ballfield parking on the left of the entrance road,
before the park entrance booth, and walk up the landfill from there. (This
same lot is typically full of worker vehicles between ~7:00am and ~4:00pm
due to an ongoing Metro North construction project.)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Shawangunk Grasslands, Ulster County NY, May 23, 2017

2017-05-24 Thread Anne Swaim
Just FYI: Henslow's Sparrow at Shawangunk Grasslands NWR was rather well
documented on eBird rather quickly yesterday.

One sample checklist is here:
