[nysbirds-l] Cedar Waxwings

2021-04-10 Thread Carney, Martin
I saw approximately 5 Cedar Waxwings in the New York Botanical Gardens
yesterday at around 5 pm. They were very near the Mosholu Gate Entrance in
what I believe is an Ash Tree.

Sorry for the late post, but yesterday (Feb. 13th), about 70 yards from the
Maintenance building up the main path on the landfill, there was a birding
bonanza! Gathered together were Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, Savannah
Sparrows, Song Sparrows, an American Tree Sparrow, a Meadowlark, and the
birds I most wanted to see: Common Redpolls! They were all feeding in close
proximity, and not afraid of the 7 or 8 of us birders/photographers
enjoying the view. This was about 2 pm. Quite a thrill! Happy Birding!

[nysbirds-l] A Funny Story

2014-11-09 Thread Carney, Martin
I was on the New York Botanical Garden bird walk yesterday, lead by Debbie
Becker. We were near the south corner of the Twin Lakes, next to the
parking lot, where a big bus was parked. We were getting great looks at
Purple Finch and a group of Pine Siskins when a high-pitched voice near the
back of the bus yelled: "Connecticut! Connecticut!" I raced to the back
of the bus area only to find a young girl excitedly sharing with her mom:
"Look Mom, the bus' license plate is from Connecticut!" Slightly
disappointed, but consoled by the hilarity (and an Orange-crowned Warbler
later in the day!), a fellow birder and I remarked on how important context
is. All in all, a great day. Happy birding.

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown Road

2014-05-18 Thread Carney, Martin
I birded Doodletown Road yesterday from approximately 8:30 to 1:30. It was
a delightful day and the birds did not disappoint. My highlights included
10 warblers: Canada (2), Cerulean (4), Blue-winged, Hooded, Redstarts,
Magnolias, Yellow, Black-throated Blue, and the best look I've ever had at
a Tennessee, down low, bathing in a little stream. I also encountered the
elusive (for me) Bay-breasted, which was a delight. Conversations with
other birders revealed there were Kentucky, Worm-eating, Cape May, and
Black and white warblers, as well. A Yellow-throated Vireo, Scarlet
Tanager and a bunch of Baltimore Orioles rounded out the scoring. What a
wonderful hobby we have!

Happy Birding

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End and Point Lookout

2014-01-14 Thread Carney, Martin
Yesterday, Mike Kravatz and I birded Jones Beach West End 2 and Point
Lookout with marvelous results: about halfway between the West End 2
parking lot and the inlet, we saw 2 Snowy Owls (guided by a number of
people); a flock of about 50 Snow Buntings was at the Nature Center; the
first jetty (westernmost) offered 10 Sanderlings, 4 Purple Sandpipers, 15
Common Eider, lots of Long-tailed Ducks, 2 Horned Grebes and, most
fantastically, 7 Harlequin Ducks, right in close on the eastern side of the
jetty. Twas amazing. They're doing work so we could not get to the other
jetties, but we were profoundly content with our sightings. Happy
birding...Martin Carney

[nysbirds-l] Short-eared Owls at Shawangunk Grasslands

2013-12-07 Thread Carney, Martin
Last evening, between 4:20 and 4:40 pm I observed 4 Short-eared owls at
Shawangunk Grasslands. They were in the huge field, observed from the
concrete area near the entrance. It was a life bird for me and truly a
thrill...Martin Carney
