I checked St. John’s, Cold Spring Harbor park, and the public dock across from the Harbor Mist between 11:30 and 12:00 today and came up empty. I checked again on my way out of town around 6:30 and again, no Spoonbill. There were many more birds feeding at 6:30 in the mudflats across from the hatchery. [nysbirds-l] GWWA - Trout Pond, Suffolk County
The Golden-winged Warbler was a mid-afternoon find by Bruce Horwith, re-found around 4pm. It was on the east side of the pond approximately 100 yards up. Bruce saw it well, within 20 feet. My daughter saw it higher up at 4pm, when it was also singing. Hopefully our recording is clear. Flew a little further south down the pond before we left. Will head back again after a quick dinner and try to post another update. [nysbirds-l] TBMU-Sag Harbor/Suffolk County
A Thick-billed Murre was located just off the shore at Foster Memorial Town Beach (also known as Long Beach) in Sag Harbor this morning. It was drifting west for the duration of my stay and was close to some large boulders on the western shore of Noyac Bay as I left, around 10:15. It was not particularly active. It was always less than 100 yards from shore. If not easily viewed from the western-most part of the lot at Long Beach, looking south from Bay Avenue in Noyack might also prove worthwhile. Only issue there is lack of parking-only 2 spots and it’s a residential neighborhood. Just wanted to post a quick update. The bird seems to have hung around until approximately 11:15, shortly before I arrived with my younger daughter. A birder who was present informed me that it was observed flying over the dunes and towards the ocean. We didn’t spot the Red-necked Phalarope again while we were at Sagaponack Pond. We left around 12:15. One word of caution if you go… we received a $100 parking ticket for our efforts. The Townsend’s Solitaire found by Bruce Horwith last week continued off 3 Mile Harbor Drive in East Hampton this morning, within sight of the SLPOA nature preserve trail sign. It flew into a rather bare juniper with a prominent fork high on the tree when I arrived. It then disappeared for 25 minutes and then showed again as I was leaving, at 8:30. The immature Red-headed Woodpecker found yesterday by John Todaro and Marguerite Wolffsohn was still present this morning near Long Pond in Sag Harbor. To find the bird, park by the tennis courts near the Sag Harbor entrance to the trail. The bird has been frequenting the patch of woods where the Sprig Tree trail meets the Spur trail, about 3/4 mile in. I’ll eBird later. Hey all, There is an adult male Eurasian Wigeon at the north end of Long Pond, in Sayre Park, Bridgehampton. Weird spot adjacent to Marders garden center and along the train tracks. To get to the pond you drive the dirt road all the way to the end. Exit your car and then walk down the little slope to the pond. The American Avocet found by Myles Stokowski a few days ago was still present on the southwest bank at Mecox inlet in Southampton at 4:15. It’s in with a group of mainly Greater black backed gulls, looking skinny. Many people were skampering about the shore of the pond 50 feet from the bird and, with nice weekend weather forecast, many more are incoming. Wonder how long it will hang out? The Sandhill Crane originally reported to eBird by Bruce Horwith and found earlier in the day by Paul D. was still present in front of the Napeague fish factory at 3:45. Looks like I arrived to find the Wilson’s Plover just after Shai and Patricia left. At first it was just ouside the enclosure and eventually I watched it walk west and into the dune grass. When I saw it, around 11:20, it was about 2/3 of the way back to the western edge of the parking lot from the cut out to the beach described earlier by Mike H. This time in the Long Pond Greenbelt in Sag Harbor. I saw the bird on the west side of the trail exactly where the Old RR Spur connects to the Round Pond trail. Compared to yesterday’s bird, this one was much more mottled yellow. Its head was the only fully red part of its body, its wings mostly olive. I took some audio of its “pickytuckytuck” call which hopefully is audible and which I will publish with my eBird list. The bird was high in a distant tree and I had a Scarlet Tanager just overhead dominating the airwaves. In case anyone chooses to take a look, I marked two “Xs” on the trail with sticks where the bird was, about 100 yards from where it intersects with a trail down to the Scallop Pond marsh. Should you decide to continue down towards the marsh, make sure you have your permethrin-treated clothing on. I took a wet and windy walk down the beach to the Georgica Inlet but had no lucking finding the previously reported Black-necked Stilt. Viewing conditions were far from ideal. Pacific Loon was present at 12:40. However, just as we arrived, someone began shooting skeet not 50 feet from where the Loon was diving in the mouth of the inlet. Refound Common Murre at 1:45. It was in the mouth of the jetty. I will try to post a picture to eBird later. The female Harlequin was on the western side of the west jetty. As I was departing, at 2pm, a single Razorbill flew into the jetty and landed in the bay to join another, not far from the red buoy. Strong NW winds made for challenging conditions. On another note, the Black Vultures were not present at the Roanoke Ave Elementary school the two times I checked this morning. Plenty of Turkey Vultures about. Many Eider were moving out of the inlet when I arrived. There was a large raft of birds just offshore. Perhaps it moved out there a bit. Water conditions were glassy calm. Consolation prizes included a Red Necked Grebe and a Razorbill feeding in the inlet.
