[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park: Dickcissel

2017-10-01 Thread Jared Cole
I birded the southern zone of Pelham Bay Park in Bronx County, New York,
today (October 1, 2017). Near the southwestern edge of the landfill, there
is a brushy area between the landfill and Eastchester Bay. A Dickcissel
popped up briefly and then landed on the fence that blocks off access to
the bay. I was not able find this bird again despite being in the general
vicinity for the next 4 hours. I got some poor photos that are on the eBird
list linked below.

I also had a Vesper Sparrow along path just outside the landfill. Raptors
were in nice display including Osprey, Northern Harrier (three on the
landfill), Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk, and American Kestrel.

On the landfill, with a 1PM tour with the Friends of Pelham Bay Park and
the Urban Park Rangers, we had many nice views of Northern Harriers,
American Kestrels, Eastern Phoebes, Palm Warblers, and Savannah Sparrows.
As is my experience in the other times I have been on this landfill, there
are lots of little birds out there deep in the grasses, but they can be
very difficult to view!

Sparrow)

[nysbirds-l] Yes- Pink-footed Goose at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx

2016-12-25 Thread Jared Cole
Pink-footed Goose and Snow Goose present among many Canada Geese on the
northern athletic fields at the Parade Grounds of Van Cortlandt Park,
Bronx, NY, observed from 3:15-4:10pm on 12/25/2016.

We observed at least two different people actively harassing the geese
flocks. One person was running at them to get then to fly while his friend
filmed it. Yikes.

Hopefully the geese are still present tomorrow and are treated respectfully
beyond!

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret and Eastern Bluebirds at Pelham Bay Park in Bronx County, NY

2016-11-12 Thread Jared Cole
Matthieu Benoit and I (Jared Cole) birded Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx, NY,
on 11/11/2016 from sunrise (about 6:40am) to sunset (about 4:40pm).

We started at Twin Islands, eventually concluding in the Southern Zone of
the park. We did not observe any morning flight. We did have a good
diversity (in low numbers) of several migratory/resident raptors, including
Bald Eagles, Northern Harrier, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk, and Peregrine Falcon. We had 8 Emberizidae sparrows
including Eastern Towhee, American Tree Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Swamp
Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, and
Dark-eyed Junco.

Two species that stood out were Eastern Bluebirds and Cattle Egret, both
observed by the landfill. We spent just under an hour (3:20-4:10pm) along
the edge of the landfill in the southern zone of the park. We had 6 Eastern
Bluebirds fly up onto the barbwire fence and then over into the landfill
area. Just after passing the landfill, we set up along the fence and had a
Cattle Egret fly by. The Cattle Egret flew southeast from the edge of the
landfill, but we lost it as it flew over the docks that stick into
Eastchester Bay. We snapped photos of both species and they are on the
eBird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32507644.

I will be uploading the other lists to eBird later but wanted to get this
one out in case birders wanted to have a look in The Bronx tomorrow.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Lawrence's Warbler reported in Central Park

2016-05-08 Thread Jared Cole
Re: Lawrence’s Warbler-

Annie Di Gennaro, John Di Gennaro, and I were birding by the Loch in the
North End of Central Park in New York, NY, at about 3:45PM. I heard a song
that sounded like Blue-winged Warbler, but with only the second part of the
Bee-Buzz song (just the Buzz). We looked for what we thought might be a
Blue-winged for about fifteen minutes without turning one up. Then we
spotted a warbler-sized bird we did not immediately recognize in an oak
tree. The bird’s wings were grayish-blue with two clear white wing bars.
Its underside was entirely yellow except the vent and under tail which were
both white. We noted the bird’s head and face were also yellow, but it had
a black throat patch and black eye mask. There were several birds in the
same tree for close comparisons including Northern Parula, Black-throated
Green Warbler, Baltimore Oriole, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Due to its
similarities to both Blue-winged and Golden-winged, and given the buzz
vocalization, the idea that it may be a hybrid came to mind. As Annie and
John kept eyes on the bird, I checked a reference I found online (an
article in *Birding* from May/June 2005). We verified the field marks and
decided that we were seeing something worth sharing. We managed to get
about ten birders on the bird. I borrowed a camera from a pair of birders
that were present and took some pictures; they were kind enough to let me
use the camera and then send me the pictures. Here are some images of the
bird seen today: (
http://earthonthewing.blogspot.com/2016/05/lawrences-warbler-in-central-park.html).

After about 15 minutes we lost the bird, but a couple more birders showed
up. We heard the bird only occasionally sing, and with effort, we were able
to track it down, eventually finding it in the same oak tree. The bird was
now higher up, but we still had clear views. Other birders showed up but as
of 5:15PM the light was becoming less favorable at this spot, and we did
not re-find the bird. I am not sure if it was found again after this time.

If anyone goes to try to look for it tomorrow, we had the bird just above
the Loch walking path, where on the one side is an overlook of the “stream”
and on the other side a wood chip path that leads to the wildflower meadow.
While the bird was pretty much directly above the walking path, the best
viewing seemed to be just up the path toward the wildflower meadow. It is
not far from the rustic bridges, if that helps.

Big thanks to the birders that allowed me to take the pictures! Such a fun
day to be birding in Central Park!

Cheers,

Jared Cole

Re: [nysbirds-l] Stuyvesant town Varied Thrush -- Friday update??

2013-12-20 Thread Jared Cole
Hi all,

I looked for the Varied Thrush yesterday (12/19/2014) from 11-11:45 am
without any luck. Another birder showed up and was waiting around so I
figured someone would post something yes/no.

I checked the area near the Oval Study this morning (12/20/2014) and
adjacent areas from 9-9:30 am this morning without seeing the bird. Two
other birders were present before I got there and did not have it either. I
did see a song sparrow and fox sparrow (in addition to the juncos and
white-throated sparrows) but no Varied Thrush.

Maybe my timing was just unlucky or maybe the Varied Thrush is still around
in some nearby area (hopefully someone else with more time can re-find it!).

Thanks,

Jared

Thanks,

Jared

 Hello, Everyone.

Has anyone seen the Varied Thrush today (Friday)? I was planning on
 looking for it this afternoon.

 Thanks.

[nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow at Central Park

2013-10-10 Thread Jared Cole
Hi everybody,

Tomas Lundquist and I had the Lark Sparrow this morning at the Great Hill
of Central Park, and I tried to text it out when we had it but failed (I am
not quite a tech-savvy birder yet I guess). When I got home and read about
how to text it out, I did, but I didn't realize there was a length limit on
the text. The spot we had it isn't specifically named so I tried to be very
specific, but the text went long and consequently, my name was cut off! For
the record the text limit is about 140 characters. Sorry for the confusion.

Anyway, glad that some people got over there and saw it.

Here is the link to my Ebird report:

And here are photos of the bird from this morning:

Again, sorry for the confusion. Take care,

Jared
