[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Presents Olmsted Trees w/Stanley Greenberg 10/18/22

2022-10-14 Thread Jennifer Kepler
OLMSTED TREES WITH STANLEY GREENBERG
OCTOBER 18 @ 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM
Location: Info Commons of Main Branch of Brooklyn Public Library**

Fundamental to renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision
in his park designs was the role of time. He had the ability to see a plot
of land for what it was in the raw undeveloped state, as well as to
visualize how his designs would translate several decades into the future
after the trees and shrubs he planted had rooted and spread and integrated
with the space. This concept, which was an essential element to Olmsted’s
projects, is harnessed by current-day photographer Stanley Greenberg, in
his new book, Olmsted Trees, (Hirmer, Fall 2022). The Brooklyn-based
photographer has created striking black and white portraits of the trees
that date to the beginnings of these parks. From Olmsted’s Central and
Prospect Park designs in New York, to the Emerald Necklace in Boston, or
park systems in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Louisville, Greenberg’s body of
work functions as both an homage to Olmsted, and a message about the
importance of caretaking the current fragile state of our Earth’s natural
environment.

Stanley Greenberg is the author of several books, including Invisible New
York, Waterworks, and CODEX New York. His photographs are in the
collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of
American Art, and The New York Public Library, among others. He has had
one-person exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the MIT Museum
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Greenberg has received fellowships and grants
from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation,
the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the
Arts. Greenberg lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Tickets must be reserved in advance as the Information Commons Space is

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club: In Person meetings have returned Tues 9/20

2022-09-16 Thread Jennifer Kepler
Hello - we want to invite anyone who is interested to join the Brooklyn
Bird club for any of our fall talks in person, at the Brooklyn Public
Library. Learn about our fall lineup here
.

Our first is coming up and will not only feature a talk, but also reveal a
photo contest we will co lead with Wikimedia Commons:

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS PHOTOGRAPHY (AND CONTEST!) WITH RYAN MCGRADY
SEPTEMBER 20 @ 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM
Location: Info Commons of Main Branch of Brooklyn Public Library**

When you type the name of a bird into a search engine, one of the first
links that inevitably pops up is Wikipedia. If you search for images of
that bird, one of the first you’ll see is likewise from Wikipedia. Even
images used elsewhere on the web may have originated on Wikipedia’s sister
site, Wikimedia Commons, which is the world’s largest free media
repository. Wikipedia is where a large part of the public learns about
birds, biology, wildlife refuges, wildlife conservation, and ecology. This
month we’ll talk about how easy it is to help improve the quality of that
information. You’ll learn more about the inner workings of a resource you
probably use all the time, as well as how you can help out if you so
choose. We’ll pay particular attention to contributing photos in
anticipation of a photo contest hosted by the Brooklyn Bird Club and
Wikimedia New York City.

Ryan McGrady a digital media researcher who volunteers on the board of
directors of Wikimedia New York City, a nonprofit which connects the people
and institutions of New York with Wikipedia and the broader free knowledge
ecosystem. He has been researching, teaching about, and/or managing
programs at the intersection of Wikipedia and education since 2007. He
began taking pictures to illustrate Wikipedia articles around 2013, and
when a casual interest in birds turned into a minor obsession during the
pandemic, it was a natural fit.

Tickets must be reserved in advance as the Information Commons Space is
restricted to 55 people total. You will not be admitted without a reserved
ticket. Please only reserve tickets if you plan to attend, if you can no
longer attend, please release your tickets so others have the opportunity.
Reserve tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/413803676937

*Please note our meeting time has changed! We will begin at 6:30pm sharp!

**Please note this location is accessible with ramps and accessible

Looking forward to welcoming folks back,

[nysbirds-l] BBC Virtual Presentation: April 19, 7pm

2022-04-14 Thread Jennifer Kepler
*BROOKLYN BIRD CLUB PRESENTS:*

*Learning the Birds with Susan Fox Rogers*

*April 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm*

Age 49, avid outdoorswoman Susan Fox Rogers fell for the birds. She took to
birding with the energy of a convert, learning not just the birds, but the
history of birders like Florence Merriam Bailey and the notorious murderer
Nathan Leopold. She reveled in the history and natural history,
environmental and ethical issues that the birds led her to. Learning the
Birds chronicles the first three years Rogers, accompanied by expert birder
and new boyfriend Peter, adventured from her home in the Hudson Valley to
the Everglades, the desert Southwest, and Alaska in search of winged
friends. Described by writer and bird expert Katie Fallon as a “perfectly
balanced blend of history, science, travel, and adventure “ Learning the
Birds details what Rogers learns about birds, human nature, and herself. By
turns humorous, and thought-provoking this memoir is full of wonder.

In this presentation, Susan Fox Rogers will talk of the joys and challenges
of becoming a birder mid-age, show images of the remarkable birds she
found—Long-eared Owl!, Bristle-thighed Curlew! Baby Boreal Owls!—and read
from her new memoir, Learning the Birds.

*Bio:*

Susan Fox Rogers is the author of Learning the Birds: A Mid-Life Adventure,
and My Reach: A Hudson River Memoir, which explores the Hudson River from
the perspective of her kayak. She is the editor of eleven anthologies,
including Solo: On Her Own Adventure, and Antarctica: Life on the Ice,
which was created while in Antarctica on a National Science Foundation
award for artists and writers. Her most recent collection, When Birds Are
Near: Dispatches from Contemporary Writers celebrates the birding life.

She has received grants and awards that have allowed her to travel to
Alaska, Antarctica, Wyoming, and by ship to the Arctic. “The Other
Leopold,” a chapter in Learning the Birds was selected by Robert Atwan for
Best American Essays 2021.

Rogers has taught the creative essay, nature writing and bird-related
classes at Bard College since 2001.

Meeting will be held via zoom and closed captioning is available for
attendees.

[nysbirds-l] Birdability: Because Birding is For Everybody and Every Body Presentation 2/8/22

2022-02-02 Thread Jennifer Kepler
Join Brooklyn Bird club:

BIRDABILITY: BECAUSE BIRDING IS FOR EVERYBODY AND EVERY BODY!
FEBRUARY 8 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Presented by Freya McGregor

Zoom link:
https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvde6hqj8vHNSAs0wHFOYWm-V_UfSNbyPB

Birding is an activity that can bring so much joy and empowerment to
everybody, but not everybody is able to go birding easily. Birdability is a
brand new non-profit, based in the US but with a global reach. Through
education, outreach and advocacy, Birdability works to ensure the birding
community and the outdoors are welcoming, inclusive, safe and accessible
for everybody. We focus on people with mobility challenges, blindness or
low vision, chronic illness, intellectual or developmental disabilities,
mental illness, and those who are neurodivergent, deaf or hard of hearing
or who have other health concerns. In addition to current birders, we
strive to introduce birding to people with disabilities and other health
concerns who are not yet birders so they too can experience the joys of
birding.

Learn about why this should matter to you (even if you don’t have an
accessibility challenge), ways to be a more welcoming and inclusive birder,
the Birdability Map (and how to submit a Birdability Site Review) and our
resources for birders (and potential future birders) with accessibility
challenges… because birding is for everybody and every body! Learn more and
find resources at birdability.org or follow

[nysbirds-l] Bklyn Bird Club Presentation: Piping Plovers in NYC presented by Chris Allieri Tues 1/18

2022-01-13 Thread Jennifer Kepler
PIPING PLOVERS IN NYC – HOW A NEW VOLUNTEER GROUP IS LOOKING TO HELP
PROTECT ENDANGERED SHOREBIRDS IN OUR CITY
JANUARY 18 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Presented by Chris Allieri

Zoom registration link:

https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYrcO2prj4iGNB-2npPSWeZbo4Qm9-pOSIG

Begun in March 2021, the NYC Plover Project enlisted over 50 volunteers to
help educate beach-goers on NYC’s most popular beaches in Queens during
their first season. Each year, just under 100 adult Piping Plovers come to
the city to nest, arriving in March and leaving in early August.

The threats facing the young chicks born to these intrepid shorebirds are
numerous, spanning predation, fierce coastal storms and flooding, and of
course, human disturbance. Partnering with the National Park Service, the
NYC Plover Project also helped with monitoring nests on several miles of
beach which are part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, one of the
busiest urban national parks. They reached well over 5,000 beach-goers this
first season, on the sand and at a fixed location. At the end of this first
season, the NYC Plover Project was featured in the New York Times.

Join this talk with Chris to hear more about Piping Plovers and what you
can do to help them, including being a 2022 shorebird ambassador beach
volunteer.

Chris Allieri is founder of the NYC Plover Project, a non-profit
organization dedicated to protecting federally-threatened and New York
State-endangered Piping Plovers that nest in New York City.

Chris had a very early passion for the environment, nature and animals,
usually preferring the company of four-legged and winged friends instead of
humans. Chris spent summers at the Jersey Shore where he first saw a Piping
Plover, thanks to a park ranger who shared his scope. He began his high
school environmental club, was a New Jersey Governor’s Scholar on the
Environment and was a national environmental justice organizer when he was
a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he studied
environmental conservation. More recently, Chris also founded and leads an
sustainability and climate-focused communications firm called Mulberry &
Astor and is a board member of the Wild Bird Fund, the only wildlife rehab
center in NYC.

His late father planted a seed for loving birds, a love which would be
profoundly sparked at the start of the pandemic. In March 2020, Chris saw
his first Piping Plover up close. Having only seen them at a great
distance, seeing Plovers on an unprotected beach, with dogs off leash and
people trampling over their nesting areas was a fire that lit both Chris’s
frustration but also his desire to do something. Chris spent 2020
photographing and posting images of over 200 different species of birds he
saw in NYC. He spent much of that summer (2020) chasing federal, state and
local agencies to urge enhanced protections for endangered shorebirds like
Piping Plovers. But Chris knew he had to do more. Fast forward to March of
this year, Chris witnessed a dog within inches of having a newly-arrived
migratory Plover in its mouth. That was it… the moment he knew his path was
chosen for him. The next day the NYC Plover Project was born.

is approximately 2,000 acres of reclaimed land within the New York City
Parks system. The park was established on the site of the former Fresh
Kills Landfill—the largest landfill in the world at the time of its closing
in 2001. Roughly 3x the size of Central Park, Freshkills Park now hosts
expansive grassland habitat totaling over 1,000 acres. In recent years,
Freshkills Park has been colonized by a number of grassland specialists,
including Grasshopper Sparrows (NYS Special Concern), Eastern Meadowlarks,
and most recently Sedge Wrens (NYS Threatened). In 2021, Freshkills Park
hosted at least 82 pairs of Grasshopper Sparrows—likely the largest
population in the region—and 8 pairs of Sedge Wrens. Researchers from CUNY
College of Staten Island and NYC Parks have been documenting the
colonization of the park by these species as they settle in this
human-engineered, novel habitat. The speakers will present their on-going
research and highlight some of the conservation successes in a maturing
grassland habitat.

Dr. Shannon Curley is an ecologist with the New York City Department of
Parks and Recreation, and an adjunct professor at CUNY College of Staten
Island. She studies the effects of climate change on birds, focusing on
changes in species distributions, migration patterns, and community
assemblage. She has been involved with grassland bird research at
Freshkills Park since 2015.

José Ramírez-Garofalo is a PhD student in the Department of Ecology,
Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University. His research
interests include species distribution under climate change, grassland
ecology, and the natural history of the New York City Area. He has been
involved with grassland bird research at Freshkills Park since 2016.

suffering from habitat loss, land conversion, and lack of protection.

[nysbirds-l] Golden plovers and whimbrel in queens

2021-09-24 Thread Jennifer Kepler
We had two golden plover (juv plumage) and about 9 whimbrel east of the
fisherman’s lot at Ft Tilden in queens about two hours ago. Some off leash
dogs arrived and I hear the birds were no longer in that direction, but
folks may have better luck east of the lot to find them. Perhaps they will
chime in and provide an update.

Monty and Rose” is a 2019 documentary written and directed by Bob Dolgan.
The film tells the story of a pair of endangered piping plovers that nested
at Chicago’s Montrose Beach, becoming the first of the species to nest in
the city since 1955. The endangered birds took up residence on one of the
busiest stretches of one of the busiest beaches in Chicago. Those
interviewed for the film include volunteers, biologists and other advocates
who spoke out when a music festival was scheduled within feet of the
plovers’ nest site. The film made its debut on November 18, 2019, with a
showing at the historic Music Box Theatre; Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker
declared the date Illinois Piping Plover Day to honor the birds. “Monty and
Rose” was an official selection of the One Earth Film Festival and aired on
Chicago’s PBS station, WTTW Channel 11, on May 2, 2020. For more
information, visit www.montyandrose.net.

**We will be screening Bob's recently finished second film about Monty &
Rose, expect a 50 minute screening with Q afterward with Bob**

Bob Dolgan created his first film, “Monty and Rose,” as a volunteer plover
monitor in Chicago in 2019. He is the founder of Turnstone Strategies, a
marketing/communications firm with a specialty in nonprofit organizations,
and a Board Member of Chicago Ornithological Society. He writes the This
Week in Birding newsletter (www.twibchicago.com), which is published twice
each week. He’s written in the past for the Chicago Tribune, Cleveland

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Presents: Audubon Mural Project, Virtual Tour Tuesday 4/6/21 @7pm

2021-04-04 Thread Jennifer Kepler

Audubon Mural Project: A Virtual Walking Tour with Leigh Hallingby

Via Zoom, Registration required. Please register here:
https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcrc-GvqDsoEtPNZYdUq0A6Lmg1SK2YLPiK

The Audubon Mural Project is an impressive effort to create murals of over
300 North American birds. Most of the murals are in the Harlem
neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights, where John James
Audubon lived the last ten years of his life. Since all of the birds
painted are threatened by climate change, the Project is designed, not
only to display the birds’ beauty, but also to make us aware of the
challenges that they face. The artworks range from lovely panels that fill
in a former window to spectacular murals covering the entire side of a
building. We will see about 40 murals, plus Audubon’s grave site, in a
50-minute slide presentation with live commentary. There will be time
afterwards for Q

Leigh is a licensed NYC tour guide who specializes in Harlem, Morningside
Heights, and the Upper West Side. She is passionate about exploring all
five boroughs and beyond on foot, mostly through organized walking tours.
Leigh is retired from a 36-year career as a non-profit librarian. She loves
doing research about the neighborhoods in which she gives tours and sharing
the information about them with attendees. Leigh is a collector,
genealogist, and lover of arts, culture, and travel. She lives on the Upper
West Side of Manhattan.

Grasslands are the fastest disappearing habitat in the U.S. and grassland
birds are disappearing right along with their habitats. We have lost 700
million grassland birds in the U.S. and Canada over the last 50 years.
Short-eared owls, Northern harriers, Upland sandpipers, Eastern
meadowlarks, and other iconic bird species are vanishing from rural
landscapes at an alarming rate. Learn about these amazing grassland birds
and find out more about what Grassland Bird Trust (GBT) is doing to reverse
that trend!

GBT has conserved or helped conserve over 250 acres of critical habitat in
upstate New York. Learn about their work with renewable energy companies on
innovative new projects to conserve more land. GBT is also spearheading
regional efforts to form a grassland coalition that will greatly increase
the scale and pace of grassland bird conservation across the eastern U.S.

Join us and discover how you can be a part of this pivotal conservation
movement!

*Laurie LaFond*

Laurie LaFond is the founder and Executive Director of Grassland Bird Trust
(formerly Friends of the IBA). She has led GBT’s growth into a respected
land trust conserving critical habitat for endangered, threatened, and
rapidly declining grassland birds. Laurie initiated and co-leads GBT’s
efforts to build regional and national coalitions that will vastly increase
the pace and scale of grassland bird conservation across the U.S. She is
also developing innovative partnerships with renewable energy companies to
conserve more land, fund stewardship and minimize impact on grassland
birds. LaFond holds a B.S. in Non-Profit Administration and an A.A. in
Communications. She has extensive experience in organizational development,
fundraising, community development, and grassland bird conservation.

*Paloma Spina*

Paloma Spina, Board Member and Coalition Co-Coordinator for GBT, is an
environmental engineer currently working for Anchor QEA, a consulting firm
specializing in environmental remediation. She started developing a passion
for habitat restoration when working on a conservation project in the cloud
forest of Honduras. Paloma regularly works on a variety of fundraising and
development projects for GBT. She is passionate about the organization’s
mission and is highly invested in building a grassland coalition with GBT’s
Executive Director Laurie LaFond and other partners. Ms. Spina holds a B.S.
in Environmental Engineering and a B.S. in Earth Science from Cornell
University.

[nysbirds-l] How to Take Better Photos of Birds: Presented by Tom Stephenson & August Onsgard -- Brooklyn Bird Club Meeting 2/17

2020-02-17 Thread Jennifer Kepler
Join the Brooklyn Bird Club for our upcoming meeting tomorrow:

HOW TO TAKE BETTER PHOTOS OF BIRDS: PRESENTED BY TOM STEPHENSON AND AUGUST
ONSGARD
FEBRUARY 18 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
At Brooklyn Public Library Main Branch At Grand Army Plaza

Birds make beautiful pictures. And photos can be useful in making tough IDs
and also serve as memories of great experiences. But birds can be very
difficult to photograph well.

This workshop covers everything you need to know to make great, sharp bird
photos. We will cover camera basics, how to set up for different
conditions, advanced tips and tricks for the field; and also the importance
of post-processing and how to make a good photo look professional.

August Davidson-Onsgard is a birder and wildlife photographer from Brooklyn
whose photographs have been published by NPR, CBS, and in the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology 2020 Calendar. His photos have been included in the Audubon
Photography Awards top 100 the last
two years in a row, and he has recently been added as a contributing
photographer for Living Bird Magazine. During migration season, August
leads the Fort Greene Park bird walks for the
Brooklyn Bird Club.

Tom Stephenson is the author of The Warbler Guide and the Warbler Guide and
Bird Genie apps. His articles and photographs are in museums and many
publications including Birding, Birdwatcher’s Digest, Handbook of the
Birds of the World, Handbook of the
Mammals of the World, Birds of Madagascar, and Guide to the Birds of SE
Brazil.
For several years he was on Zeiss’s digiscoping team for the World Series
of Birding; and in 2011 his team won the World Series Cape Island Cup. In
2014 Tom and his team set the US record for a Photo Big Day, taking
pictures of 208 species in one 24-hour period.

[nysbirds-l] BBC Presentation: The Galapagos: Home of Evolution, 1/21 @7pm

2020-01-19 Thread Jennifer Kepler
*Please Join us!*

*The Galapagos: Home of Evolution*
*Presented by Bobbi Manian and Tom Stephenson*

*January 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm*

*Note: This meeting will be held at the Brooklyn Public Library, Central
Branch*

Six hundred miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador sit a chain of volcanic
islands that are home to a range of fascinating and unique animals. Because
of its isolation, the Galapagos has served as a workshop in evolution. The
slight variation of some of the birds from island to island triggered the
imagination of Charles Darwin, which led him to develop his world-changing
theory of evolution.

For this talk we’ll discuss the historical significance of the islands and
show lots of photos of the birds, reptiles and mammals that live there
including sharks, iguanas that swim, albatross, penguins, tree finches,
cactus finches, ground finches and, of course, tortoises.

Come and learn what it’s like to visit this unique area.

*Bobbi Manian* is a retired engineer who took up birding as her second
career eight years ago. Her main birding interest is county birding; she

Her main birding interest is county birding; she
enjoys scouring all corners of Brooklyn, finding migrants, rarities and the
occasional dead body. Bobbi is an active volunteer with the Brooklyn Bird
Club. She leads the Tuesday Migration Walks in Prospect Park during spring
and fall migration. She coordinates the BBC’s bird-a-thon in May, their
