[nysbirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks
Good morning all, I had a new yardbird today - EVENING GROSBEAKS. The birds were calling from a neighbors yard in downtown Buffalo. I heard 2, possibly more. Keep your eyes (and ears) open, and happy birding. [nysbirds-l] Woodcock etc.
Trying to make an effort to see some early migrants, I had at least 8 Woodcock at Red Jacket Riverfront Park in Buffalo on Wednesday. Birds bite scattered throughout the park, calling and making their twittering flight sounds. I don’t know that I have heard so many in one small spot since I was a kid! Yesterday I had quite a few Rusty Blackbirds and 3 Ravens at Tifft. I did not see the Eurasian Wigeon, but ducks weren’t as numerous as I’d expect. For those interested, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will be doing some cleanups in April and May - please consider participating: https://bnwaterkeeper.org/programs/cleanup/ Joe Fell Buffalo, NY jfell2...@gmail.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Gulls - Niagara Falls - 1-10-2121
I had a little bit of time today and headed to the Falls to see if I could catch up with the Slaty-backed Gull and Harlequin Duck - no luck. Of the more interesting gulls, I had 5 Iceland Gulls (4 Kumlien's and 1 Thayer's), 5 Lesser Black-backed and 1 Glaucous Gull. People were present and hoping to see the Slaty-backed, but I am not sure if they had any luck. It appears that others reported seeing the bird today. [nysbirds-l] Buffalo area birds
Today (4-26) I had 23 Fox Sparrows at Forest Lawn - far and away the largest number of this species I've seen, although have been seeing many so far this spring. Also present in smaller numbers were White-throated, Chipping, Song and Field, and some other migrants. https://ebird.org/checklist/S67855320 Yesterday (4-25) yielded an Eastern Kingbird at Tifft Nature Preserve. There was a good mix of migrants, although the only warbler species I encountered was Yellow-rumped. There were quite a few folks out, and some were not great about physical distancing. https://ebird.org/checklist/S67815909 I have also had the pleasure of a Fish Crow visiting my yard (4-18, 22 & 23). I have included some mediocre photos and audio for the most recent appearance. https://ebird.org/checklist/S67693823 Please be safe out there! [nysbirds-l] Virginia Rail, Rusty Blackbird - Tifft Nature Preserve - Buffalo
I took a walk to Tifft on Tuesday 3-24-20 and had Virginia Rail off Old Tifft St (reported previously by P. Corrigan). Also in that area was at least 1 Rusty Blackbird (although it was possible there may have been more). The Mute Swan previously reported by A. Nowicki was also present, along with a nice variety of other expected waterfowl. This was the first time I have seen a Mute Swan at Tifft. The full checklist can be seen here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S66188526 David and Marilyn, I apologize for not mentioning the rail. I was more excited about the Rusty! I stopped by Forest Lawn after a rough day at work! Birds seen included: 2 Mourning Warblers, 1 Canada Warbler, 1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, 1 Gray-cheeked Thrush and 1 Swainson's Thrush. I believe Kevin Rybczynski and several others also caught up with these birds earlier in the day. There were few birders and photographers out today - while quantity was lacking compared to the past couple of weeks, the birds present were rather exciting. I had a Shrike as well as an American Kestrel at the Union Ship Canal near the Certainteed building in South Buffalo about 20 minutes ago. Prior to that I had a Northern Mockingbird, American Kestrel and Snowy Owl at the Seaway Slip on Furhman Blvd. The owl was out on the break wall. [nysbirds-l] Black-legged Kittiwake - Buffalo
I had a Black-legged Kittiwake at Unity Island this afternoon. This was the first time I had a kittiwake in adult plumage. There are very poor photos on eBird. Mike G with Pat M and Kyle B found a very close Little Gull (and I believe a second across the River in Fort Erie). Kevin Rybczynski’s Sabine’s Gull eluded is all. I hope folks keep scanning the growing numbers of Bonaparte’s Gulls on the Niagara River for those less common species! I though our friends in Canada might appreciate a heads up on some of these birds, as they could just as easily appear on that side of the river. I saw *1 Forester's Tern* yesterday at LaSalle Park - the bird was in the company of 1 Common Tern. I miss this bird some years, I was surprised to have 3 in 1 day! *Cliff Swallow*: *1* a Tifft (Kevin Rybczynski has 2 others at Tifft) I had *5 Yellow-rumped* and 1 Palm Warbler at Tifft (I think several people had reported Palm at Tifft - Sue Barth, the Bertolas and others) *White-throated Sparrows*: *93* at Tifft - I think this was the tip of the iceberg. Moving by the dozens between the footbridge and Old Tifft St. I don't recall ever seeing numbers like this. [nysbirds-l] Oswego Gulls Saturday 1-20-18
I had no luck with either the Slaty-backed Gull or Mew Gull today in the Oswego area (best gull for me was a 1st winter Iceland Gull - on the river near lock 6). At Oswego Harbor Kyle Brock scoped 1 bird on the break wall to the east, and a woman who's name I can't recall had spotted another on the east side of the harbor at the base of a large tower (perhaps a radio tower). That being said, I also have a request - if anyone is familiar with the permit requirements for keeping study skins or mounted birds for a school collection please contact me at the email provided (I know that DEC and USFWS both require permits, but any insight as to the particulars would be helpful). Best of luck if you go for the gulls - hopefully they will be re-found! [nysbirds-l] Loggerhead Shrike - Times Beach - Buffalo
Shelley Seidman found a Loggerhead Shrike at Times Beach Nature Preserve in Buffalo. The bird was moving about a bit - during the time I was there it was anywhere from ground level to about 40'. Others who were able to view the bird included Joshua Ketry, Kevin Rybczynski and Becky Harbison. The bird is banded - perhaps this will indicate the bird's origin (quite likely one of the Carden Alvar or Napanee Plain in ON) Times Beach is just south of downtown Buffalo on Furhman Blvd - best of luck for anyone looking tomorrow. I had *1 each* of *Yellow-billed *and* Black-billed Cuckoos* (YB at Sturgeon Point, an unexpected BB at Bennett Beach), *5 Red-headed Woodpecker*s (2 at Wendt Beach, 1 at Bennett Beach, and 2 on Lakeshore just east of Evangola SP), *1 Semi Sandpiper* and *14 American Avocets* at Bennett Beach. On the way home, I saw *1 Merlin* that was harrying a Red-tailed Hawk near Juno and Route 5 in Hamburg.
