Hi all, It is great idea to post videos of bad behaviors of birders/photographers :) I would love to take videos of bad behaviors of birders too, especially when playback is involved too. (I am being sarcastic here). How about when 60 people show up in someone's yard to see that rare bird? Does ABA code has anything about it? At this point it seems it is appropriate behavior for most birders. I agree with this part Matt Bango's e-mail. I think that it is a bit unfair to single out photographers as problem individuals when both birders and other individuals in the field for other reasons are equally as problematic. If any of the photographers identified earlier are reading this thread - simply bird (and photograph) ethically and these issues won't come about. Enjoy birds and let them enjoy their life too. [nysbirds-l] GHGU directions Some alternative suggestions for out of NYCers
1. GHGU location 2. FW: Gray-Hooded Gull 8/2 late afternoon 3. RE: GHGU location If someone is coming from out of state, then I think it would be far more easier to drive via I 278 Staten Island and Belt parkway using Verrazano Bridge, which is crowded but not later in the day or on week-ends. Even if it is crowded it takes much lesser time than through city. Also remember the exit for Belt parkway is to the left, so keep left on the bridge. I have used this route when I have to drive to JFK. It is way faster than going through the city. Even if you plan to drive to city there is always problem as to where to park your car to take a metro. So then the option I have chosen is to go to Hoboken and park in the parking garage near NJ transit on Water st. and then take NJ transit into NYC. Hope this helps someone. RE: [nysbirds-l] Blockbusting/fixed link
Probably everyone knows everything costs. But there are always tons of volunteers, many of them are on this e-mail list who have been working for free for the sake of birds and other wildlife and have spent hundreds of dollars surveying etc. Their time is donated free. Their interest is genuine, and are willing to save whatever it is, even a few individuals or species. When many such enterprises are undertaken they become a large set of individuals or a set of population or more depending on how movement spreads. Good example is monarch butterfly. If nothing else, general public has gained knowledge and that is far more important for future plans and policies as they could make choices at local or state or country level. So every effort is worth it. So we can't just sit and wait for some funding to come through where a few individuals decide on what to do. These are my 20 cents. Meena Do you know for a FACT that the surveys cost only $50-$500. What you are ignoring is ---Time to set up point counts, that is where do they go $$$ ---Time to get the contract to conduct the surveys developed and executed more $$$ ---Time to enter and analyze data. more ---Time to write, review, submit report and then edit after the regulators review the report more ---Profit NOBODY works for free more $$$ Meena Haribal Boyce Thompson Institute Ithaca NY 14850 Phone 607-254-1258 http://meenaharibal.blogspot.com/ http://haribal.org/ http://haribal.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/wildwest+trip+August+2007+.pdf<http://www.geocities.com/asiootusloe/http:/www.geocities.com/asiootusloe/mothsofithaca.htmlhttp:/haribal.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/wildwest+trip+August+2007+.pdf> -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
