[nysbirds-l] Live Great shearwater democrat point

2022-06-29 Thread patrickhoran
I just saw a great shearwater in the surf at democrat point.it actually was up
on the beach for a half minute but seemed to struggle with its footing and went
back to the water.bird otherwise looked o.k. and moved about fine.very clean
immature looking bird.it could be on its last legs so to speak but if I was to
guess I wouldn't think so.just throwing it out to anyone who may be out this
way to look at any deceased birds.i did see a dead greater  also but that one
definitely isnt  salvageable.this live one's flying fine but isn't doing its
regular shearwater flow.lots of body surfing and some foraging.Sent from my

[nysbirds-l] AMERICAN BITTERN pehlam bay park

2020-10-22 Thread patrickhoran

While attempting to relocate a possible red or red-necked phalarope I found
yesterday afternoon, upon entering turtle cove an american bittern flushed close
to me and flew 50ft into the grass and disappered.i called Richard aracil.the
bittern flew back close to the waterline staying hidden.after a while it flew
up again this time giving a long Ariel display while being harrased by a
red-winged blackbird or 2.the possible phalarope was not found though.andrew
baske thinks the bird is a red phalarope and richard A thinks its a red-necked
phalarope.currently I have no computer to edit photos of the mystery bird but I
will attempt to clean up the shots of what I have on the memory card.sorry for
the dual long winded post.Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

[nysbirds-l] Wallkill/liberty loop trail issues currently

2020-06-01 Thread patrickhoran
Greetings to all concerned about being accurate.i am one of the naive ebird
posters who added both state's birds to my atlas report.that has since been
corrected and is accurate to the best of my ability.regarding the volunteer I
had spoken with not once but twice,it should be pointed out to her and maybe
others as well that if you see a person in the loop with birding gear and
strike up a conversation on let's say...the sandhill cranes, which was the
case, and the unfamiliar individual let's you know he or she is an active ebird
contributor maybe you should make it a point of telling them (as was the case
in your telling me all the good things you do for the cote/crane security work)
that there is another state that takes up the majority of the actual loop
side.you cant say your a big bird atlas contributor who strives for accuracy's
and miss not one but 2 opportunitys to point this out about a stateline, then
complain about there listings later to someone else or others.and why all the
secrecy about the cranes.you took the time to ask not to post any sightings on
them a pair that's been there at least 2 years during breeding season? and
thats why I added the cranes to my n.j. list so maybe others may come to see
them(I was going to omit them but for the sake of accuracy I didn't),and maybe
a least bittern.also on new jerseys side btw.i hope the signs I suggested to
Linda on her facebook New York birder post will be going up asap.i know I can
get animated when talking to people birding in my backyard if they have the
misfortune of stopping me(borderline overbearing) but I do try to give as much
information as possible, for the sake of those who are and were in the past
helpful to me.so thank you linda and bruce two nice people I was fortunate to
meet up in the loop.it was a great place to bird, and why I returned saturday
morning for more great birding.

2020-04-08 Thread patrickhoran
Just had at least 4 blue-winged teals with 12 green-winged teals by turtle
cove's eastchester bay side in pehlam bay park.in case anyone is around while
green-winged teals are fairly common at this time of year,blue-winged teals are
hardly seen in the park.currently orchard beach parking lot is closed for
parking.im not 100% certain it's because of the pandemic, but because of peoples
disregard for safe distancing they may have shut down access to the beach and
parking.you can still get too turtle cove from the footpaths around the

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted goose pehlam bay park

2019-12-05 Thread patrickhoran
There is a greater white-fronted goose in the Thomas Pell marsh now hunking
down for the night in a flock of Canada geese,Richard aracil spotted it and I
recieved a message shortly after from him.I patted the dogs on the head and
headed over to the pehlam bay draw bridge and was able to locate it in almost
total darkness,so my digiscop pics and video are horrible but good enough to
add too the i.d. of the goose.
