[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Central Park, NYC - Tues., 4/25 (and no re-finds of Painted Passerina bunting - ?)
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - A ‘female-type-plumaged’ BLUE Grosbeak was seen in Central Park’s Ramble area, just north of the Azalea Pond there on Tuesday, April 25th; thanks to M.B. Kooper for an initial report! Note that this was seen in the afternoon of Tuesday. In the meanwhile, that ‘other’ Passerina [genus] individual, somewhat rarer-still (!) - the Painted Bunting of recent days, in Central Park’s northern area for all of its’ known stay so far, has *not been publicly reported in 2 days*, and, possibly has moved on. It is also *possible* that it remains in the county or even in the same sector of the same park, somewhere. Fairly good diversity of other migrant species were again seen (overall) in Central Park, and elsewhere in N.Y. County, which takes in Manhattan island. Good birds, Tom Fiore manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Blue grosbeak in Co-Op City Athletic Field, Bronx
There is what I believe to be young or nonbreeding male blue grosbeak in the northern Co-Op City Athletic Field in the Bronx, just around 3pm. I was eating lunch in my car with my binoculars scanning all the starlings and robins in the field, and very surprised to see this bird. If I'm wrong lunch is on me, but I think it's worth reporting. Will post some terrible phone/binocular pictures to Ebird shortly in a list submitted for the Rivers Run Community Garden hotspot. Coordinates were 40.876219, -73.823819. [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak - Oceanside Landfill 6/2 (Nassau Co)
Morning all, A Town of Hempstead survey of the Oceanside Landfill along Long Beach Road produced at least one immature male Blue Grosbeak. It was singing along the north and west edges of the landfill. I was able to observe an immature male singing at two locations ~1,100 ft apart within a few minutes, but I did not have time to verify that there were two birds. They look similar in photos. Also here Savannah Sparrows breeding on the landfill, 2 Indigo Buntings, and a very late BT Green Warbler. Lots of flyby ibis here. Also 4 Little Blue Herons in the immediate marsh, seen from atop the landfill. I do not know about access, but there is a small (gated) park which from which it would be audible 40.623182, -73.636119The parking area at the end of this road is close to the second point, but is commercial, trashed, and secluded, so be careful: 40.621469, -73.634468Chabad of Oceanside parking lot is still within earshot of the second point. 40.620521, -73.632850 Please be respectful of people in the neighborhood and don't stress the bird with playback if you go, it was singing consistently this morning around 7. [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Central Park, NYC 10/12
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City Wednesday, 12 October, 2016 - A BLUE Grosbeak (of brownish coloration) was found by Joe Giunta's morning NYC Audubon (NYCAS) chapter bird-walk group, at the wildflower meadow in the park's north end, and subsequently seen by various other observers intermittently thru the day, with late sightings in the last hour of the day; most of the time rather skulking in the eastern end of the fenced-in meadow, which is very roughly near about 104th Street, & west of the park's East Drive. A very good variety of other migrants was found by the birding groups led by the above, & Gabriel Willow & others with NYCAS, as well as for the AMNH (American Museum of Natural History), in various parts of the park today. Thanks to all and in regards to helping to put word out, to David Barrett of Manhattan, who also was on-scene for the blue grosbeak. Re:[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Muscoot Farm Westchester
Still there as of 5:15 PM working the same general area of the field behind the gazebo, feeding on the ground near the haymounds on the right side of the field. For those unfamiliar w Muscoot Farm, take the trail straight at the far end of the parking lot past all of the barns and a field surrounded by a white fence, bare right at the first fork til you get to a wooden shed. Take the next right and eventually you'll emerge in a field with a gazebo directly infront of you. The field directly beyond the gazebo is where the Grosbeak is hanging out, about an 8 minute walk from the parking lot. Ann primarily had it on the left side of the field working the brushy area and this is where I first spotted it (it will occasionally associate w Blackbirds & Cowbirds in treetops). However the area we mostly watched the bird was near the hay-mounds on the right just when you walk into the field past the gazebo. The bird does flush very easily so please keep your distance and stay on the trails as to not corner the bird. Most importantly, for those who don't know THE PARK GATE CLOSES AT 4 PM. If you get there near closing time you should park on Route 100. [nysbirds-l] BLUE GROSBEAK - a late posting
For anyone heading to or in Eastern LI, there was an immature Blue Grosbeak in a field along Town Lane in East Hampton. The bird was observed by me on Sunday in the late morning, and re-found later that day.
The field where it was seen is on the south side of Town Lane; the western-most portion of the field is close to the corner of Town Lane and Windmill Lane in Amagansett, NY. [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Calverton
Late this morning one adult Blue Grosbeak (calling) and two immatures were seen in the Veterans Memorial Park, Calverton, in the general vicinity of areas where probable breeding was reported in the last BBA. This park is on the border of EPCAL on the south side of Route 25, approximately 4 miles east of William Floyd Parkway, prominently signed. From the parking lot, go east to the paved road, then continue south (right) past the adjoining paved road to the left. The birds were in the oaks overhanging the road about 100 yards on the right. The adult was acting somewhat territorial. [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak in Bridgehampton
This morning I heard a singing male BLUE GROSBEAK behind the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton, (Suffolk Co.). The bird was singing from the large spruce stand directly behind the museum and then later along the south-eastern edge of the park. There are also several singing male Indigo Buntings and a small colony of Purple Martins in the field. I heard from Jim Ash that his search for the Elegant Tern at Shinnecock was unsuccessful today, however there was a MARBLED GODWIT on the Tiana flats, and a WHIMBREL at Triton Lane. -- Hugh McGuinness Washington, D.C. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

RE: [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Kissena Corridor
The BLUE GROSBEAK was seen again today at Kissena Corridor (probably better by Jeff Ritter than me), by the paved path that crosses at 148th Street. Also in this vicinity were a Winter Wren, up to 10 Fox Sparrows, a Nashville Warbler, and what in a brief look appeared to be a Tennessee Warbler. When I first arrived, a flock of 7 Eastern Bluebirds passed overhead, probably on their way to join in the coastal flight that I'm sure was taking place (but I couldn't enjoy due to storm related issues). A couple of separate Bluebirds did touch down in the corridor. I kept an eye on a crab apple tree at the western end of the corridor that was popular with robins, starlings, and House Finches, as a potential grosbeak attraction (although that might be more of a Pine than Evening Grosbeak thing). I haven't abandoned hope on the Virginia's, especially since the spot is so close to home. A brief check today yielded a Blackpoll Warbler and another late surprise in the form of a Red-eyed Vireo. At the other end of Alley Pond Park, by Oakland Lake, migrant influx was evidenced by several Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, as well as a Nashville Warbler. To add to the comments yesterday on Nashvilles still coming down from points north, I believe that western Nashvilles could be in the mix at this stage of the season. I was able to photograph the one at Kissena. It's a dull immature, but gray extending well down the back might be indicative of a western bird (or just a dull eastern). [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak in Central Park
While leading a group on a tour around Strawberry Fields & The Ramble on this damp & chilly morning, we spotted some nice migrants, the highlight of which was a young Blue Grosbeak along the edge of the lake south of the Bow Bridge. It was flitting through the cattails and then flew up into a weeping willow by the water, affording us a good view. It looked to be a first-year bird judging by the bright rusty plumage. It was giving its distinctive ringing call. We also saw a nice assortment of warblers, and numerous Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks hanging around the jewel weed growing by the Oven. Also spotted was an unusual first-year male Northern Cardinal that I've seen several times now by The Oven and the Maintenance Meadow. He has a freakishly long crest, about 2-3 times as long as a typical cardinal's crest I'd say. Has anyone else seen this unusual bird? I've named him "Cresty the Cardinal". I wonder if he'll maintain the extra-long crest through future molts? [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak FBF / Cerulean Warbler FP
A couple of notable birds I ran into today were a female BLUE GROSBEAK at Floyd Bennet Field, Brooklyn (in the area just southwest of the community garden) and a male CERULEAN WARBLER around the water hole at Forest Park, Queens. The Cerulean had come down to the water hole a couple of times before I got there. Both places, as well as Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, had a variety of normal spring migrants that I won't bother to list or boldface. [nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak (2), Connetquot S.P., Oakdale, Suffolk Co.
Looked unsuccessfully this evening for the previously reported Yellow-throated Warbler @ CSP from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. My wife Lynne and I did relocate the first summer male Blue Grosbeak as reported earlier today by Ken Thompson in the company of a breeding plumage adult male Blue Grosbeak in the paddock west of the main building. Also, had a FOS Green Heron fly over the nearby pond. Re:[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak, Summer Tanagers, etc.
The Summer Tanager found this morning (~8:15) during the Great South Bay Audubon field trip (co-led by Steve D'Amato and myself) was actually on the orange end of the spectrum for a female SUTA, which momentarily led me to think it was a female oriole when I first laid eyes on it. We managed to keep it in view for ~5 minutes as it moving through the treetops before losing track of it. This was along the north edge of the picnic area less than 100 yards west of the main parking lot, and east of the where the male was found later. The SUTAs were part of a fair movement of birds overnight which occurred despite the north winds and chilly temperatures. These arrivals were dominated by Yellow-rumped Warblers (of course), but also featured Blue-winged, Yellow, Black-throated Green, B, N. Parula, and Common Yellowthroat. Other highlights included Great-crested Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, and Indigo Bunting. I found that the adult male Blue Grosbeak and 4 male Indigo Buntings persisted at Gilgo when I visited there solo mid-afternoon (3-3:45).
