[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing + Evening Grosbeak, Stillwell Woods, Nassau County

2018-12-01 Thread Timothy Healy
I’ve been keeping an eye on the abundant crops of berries at Stillwell Woods
Park in the hopes that some northern irruptives who favor fruit might show up.
My hunch paid off big time today. I just had a Bohemian Waxwing calling as it
flew south over the wooded northern section of the property with a large flock
of robins. While backtracking to try and relocate the birds, I found a female
Evening Grosbeak that I thought I’d heard give a single call a few minutes
prior. Currently still on site, searching for both, and more.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing - Crab Meadow Beach, Suffolk Co.

2018-11-29 Thread Taylor Sturm
Hi all,

Not exactly chaseable, but probably worth getting the word out nonetheless: a
BOHEMIAN WAXWING just flew past Crab Meadow Beach (Northport, Suffolk Co.)
heading west with a small group of robins.

Spent some time trying to relocate it in the fruiting trees at the western edge
of the park but it appears to have carried on westward.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing

2015-02-14 Thread Steve Walter
I posted a picture at http://www.stevewalternature.com/ from this morning.
I was with Steve Schellenger and John Gaglione, when John spotted the
Bohemian Waxwing at the top of a deciduous tree in the area where it's been
seen before - where you descend into the median area at the turnaround. That
made it easy and we were able to see where it flew down to. If down low
among the bushes - and not along the edge - it could easily go undetected. A
gray bird in a gray background, as the picture will show.

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing, Longspurs, Buntings, Larks - Lake Ontario Plain, Niagara County

2015-02-10 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Around 10-10:30 this morning, the BOHEMIAN WAXWING at Fort Niagara State
Park was showing well, along with about 30 Cedars, 4 Robins, and 4 PURPLE
FINCHES. They were in the heavily laden fruit trees near the north entrance
booths (the Parkway entrance).

Near the south end of Hulbert Road in the Town of Wilson, there was a huge
flock of 550 SNOW BUNTINGS, 150 HORNED LARKS, and 9 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. The
birds were usually far back in the field on the east side of the road and
would often fly around the covered manure piles. They were not looking for
openings to get at the manure but were landing on and below the weed stalks
that were sticking above the snow - very redpoll like. I even saw a Tree
Sparrow mixed in with them. They would also land in the fields but appeared
to be just resting there, some with only their heads showing above the snow.
Occasionally, they would come to the road as well. Except when they came to
the road, a scope was necessary to pick out the longspurs.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian waxwing - Nassau County

2015-01-26 Thread Stephane Perreault
There was a single Bohemian waxwing yesterday (Sunday 9 am) at the Sands Point
Preserve, in Northern Nassau County. ?The bird was mixed with 18 cedar waxwing
in a tree that is otherwise in a brushy area. ?The trail from which it was
observed is the one that is parallel to the bluff on the Eastern side the
preserve. ?The bird was observed approximately 150 yards NE of the Kettle pond.

It was identified as a Bohemian by the completely rufous undertail coverts.
?Only once I saw this feature could I confirm its slightly larger size and
redder face then the neighboring cedar waxwing. ?

The small flock of cedar waxwing was observed during both of my last two visits
to the preserve (then 20 and 15 birds), but there was no Bohemian waxing on
those days (December 20 and January 11).

Other areas to look for wintering cedar waxwing at Sands Point Preserved is the
brushy area between the Kettle pond and the beach; and the trees near the bee
hives (adjacent to the Museum parking lot).?

There is $10 fee per car for entrance to the preserve. ?Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian Waxwing - No

2015-01-16 Thread Rich Perkins / TAM
Hi all,

We have been getting a lot of emails from people inquiring the status of the
Bohemian and hoping to come and see it. Unfortunately, we have not seen the
bird since late morning on Sunday. We have been looking daily and a few
other birders have come and tried as well but at this point he seems to have
moved on along with the robins he had been with. If there are any sightings
we will certainly advise and would be happy to have people come look.
