RE: [nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows NO - Venetian beach Suffolk County

2015-11-17 Thread Grover, Bob
I had been at Venetian a little earlier, from 7:00 to 7:45 with similar
results, minus the Common Tern. There was a third skimmer a little west of the
other two, so all three remaining birds are still present. There was also a
very infirm juv. Laughing Gull on the beach that probably didn't survive the
day.
In the tardy department, I set off Saturday to various coastal locations
expecting to inventory numbers of Franklin's Gulls. I ran up a total of zero
between Gilgo, Ocean Parkway, Robert Moses 2 and 5, Captree SP, Captree Island
and the Bay Shore Marina. Talk about a one day wonder! Of note at Bay Shore
Marina were 65 Laughing Gulls, along with a Forster's Tern. When I visited
again Sunday morning, there were only two Laughing Gulls.
The Venetian "hot spot" is nice, but we really need to just attach a GPS
locator beacon to Pete Morris's bike if we want ready access to the latest
rarities.

The Cave Swallows that had been the last 2 days at Venetian Beach in
Lindenhurst were not seen from 8:30 -11:30 this morning. The 2 immature
skimmers were still on the beach with the gulls, also sometimes joined by an
immature Common Tern. A 1st cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull was at the western
end of the beach, and a flock of 6 Monk Parakeets occasionally flew around the
area. 1 Long-billed Dowitcher was noted with the Greater Yellowlegs nearby
along Venetian Avenue(?) by the boat dock

RE: [nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows

2015-11-13 Thread Isaac Grant
My guess is that we just miss them. So much area to cover and so few people
covering it. I think this is just a perfect example of how many good birds get
by us without being detected. That is not the case for Cape May. Very small
area and loads of coverage. All the birds bottleneck there before heading out
over the bay. Take the birds I found today as an example. I spent 6 and a
half hours on the beach from morning until early afternoon and did not see a
single swallow. Picked my kids from school, dropped them off at a friend and
went back out to see what I could find. Went back exactly where I was earlier
and there they were. May not have noticed them if one did not fly right past
me while I was walking out to the beach. Takes lots of luck to be right where
they are and looking in their direction when the happen to be flying by.

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows

2015-11-13 Thread J GLUTH
Maybe I’m jumping the gun on this and good numbers of Cave Swallows will
be seen along the Atlantic coast of NY this weekend, but I find it
puzzling that so many have been seen down in Cape May recently and only
a handful here thus far.
Even taking into account Cape May’s history of hosting substantial
November incursions of Cave Swallows, and it’s penchant for
concentrating large numbers of southbound migrants in general, the
disparity between the numbers seen there over the past week (~400, Wed.
-- today) relative to the rest of the NE U.S. (16, 11 in only 6 eBird
reports plus Isaac Grant’s Staten Is. birds today) is striking. I don’t
think even the greater density of birders in Cape May would account for
such an imbalance. My understanding of past Cave Swallow invasions
(correct me if I’m wrong) had the birds being transported to the NE by
prolonged SW winds (like we’ve had recently) and first being seen in
numbers along the shores of the Great Lakes, then subsequently (1-2 days
later) along the Atlantic coast after the wind shifted NW. Any
hypotheses on how/why so many swallows have reached Cape May while
eluding detection by savvy birders elsewhere? Whatever the explanation,
I’ll be out early tomorrow looking for some — and Franklin’s Gulls too!

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows - Golden Hill State Park

2015-11-12 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
A little before 10:30 this morning, Celeste Morien and I had three swallows
flying right along the lakeshore at Golden Hill State Park in Niagara
County. I was able to get two in the scope and confirm that they were CAVE
SWALLOWS, noting the square tail tip, buffy throat, and pale rump. The third
swallow was likely the same species but we were unable to confirm that. Our
complete checklist follows.

The photos I posted was for determining the size of the flock, and in the
latter few photos confirming the ID of the birds.

2012-11-20 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hello all,
I have posted a few full frame images of the flock of Cave Swallows I saw
today. When I looked at the photos I saw that there were one Tree Swallow
mixed in the flock. In one of the images I counted 34 swallows, but when I
pulled my zoom lens back and fired off the "flock shots" there were at
least five swallows outside of the view finder. So in total this flock of
swallows were more like 40 birds large.

None of the photos are sharp, so take it for what they are - ID photos:

Re: [nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows

2012-11-20 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi again,
The photos I posted was for determining the size of the flock, and in the
latter few photos confirming the ID of the birds.

Click through the individual photos to see the large versions. They are
1600 pixels on the long side.

PS. If you want sharp, crisp photos of Cave Swallows, don't bother.

[nysbirds-l] Cave swallows at cemetery of the resurrection, Staten Island

2012-11-18 Thread Isaac Grant
To follow up on Joe Trezza's email, there were at least 65 and more likely 80
cave Swallows. Yes I said 80. One flock had at least 50 birds. The other had
15-20 and there were birds flying between them. The flock was quickly forming
and breaking up and dispersing, only to reappear minutes later. They are being
seen over the pond as you enter off of Sharrott Avenue. This entrance is very
close to Hylan Boulevard. For those not familiar, this is basically across the
street and behind Mt. loretto unique area.

Major kudos to Seth Wollney an Dave Eib, who were the original finders of the
flock of 30 yesterday. Hard to believe seeing so many, after being the finder
of NY States 2nd Cave Swallow some time in the late 90's. what a difference 15
years makes.

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows - Hamlin Beach (Monroe County)

2012-10-25 Thread Andy Guthrie
There has been a good flight of Cave Swallows at Hamlin Beach (Monroe
County) today - through about 10:15 there were a total of 96, all going
west. Initially they were passing by in small groups (2-3 birds) but there
were several groups of around 15-20 birds. Other birds passing by included
7 Evening Grosbeaks, good numbers of American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin,
Although I spent little time watching the lake, the assembled group of
birders noted good numbers of Black Scoters (120+), Surf Scoters (including
a single flock of c. 60), c.100 Brant, and three jaegers, at least one of
which was Parasitic (I didn't see the other two or hear them IDed to
species).

Cheers,
Andy Guthrie

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows @ Breezy Point - Queens County...

2010-11-24 Thread Andrew Baksh
I birded Breezy Point, from mid morning until around 4:30 p.m. this
afternoon. Highlights included 5 Cave Swallows - first 3 and then 2 seen
within 1/2 hour of each other, all on the Oceanside.

The other notable was the huge flock of Bonaparte Gulls that were in a
feeding frenzy near some fishing boats all on the Oceanside. A conservative
estimate put the number of Bonaparte Gulls somewhere around 800.

Good and responsible birding!

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows appearing along Lake Ontario shore

2009-11-09 Thread Angus Wilson
Posted on Genesee Birds only but worthy of wider dissemination. A few
Cave Swallows were reported from CT and NJ in late Oct, but I'm not
aware of any being reported from coastal sites today or over the
weekend. Suspect they are following an arc and will perhaps filter
east and/or south during the week.

Subject: Cave Swallows - Hamlin Beach
From: Andy Guthrie
Date: Mon, 9 Nov 2009 14:15:56 -0500

There has been a nice movement of Cave Swallows at Hamlin Beach so far
today. Dave Tetlow called me a little before 10 am to say two had
passed going east. As of noon when I arrived they were up to 8.
Between about 12:40 and 1:30, several flocks went by, totaling another
47 birds. All of the latter birds were moving west, a fair ways in
from the shoreline, and getting pretty high at times. There was also
a lone Northern Rough-winged Swallow moving east earlier in the
morning, not associated with any Cave Swallows.

Cheers,
Andy Guthrie
