RE: [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Fort Tilden (not chaseable)

2022-10-28 Thread Steve Walter
I'm changing the call to Greater White-fronted Goose. I apologize for not
researching it a little better. But yesterday was a long day in the field -
not one that I wanted to follow up with a lot of time looking at bad
pictures. But with a bit more time to look at the other pictures and pull
out the photo shopping tricks today, there are other things to be seen.

Most notably and surprising was the presence of a second non-Canada. And
with two rare geese in the same flock, it quickly favored the somewhat rare
species over the very rare one. The second goose shows an orange bill and
barring underneath - what you'd expect on an adult White-fronted. The
previously discussed individual would appear to be a juvenile - maybe even
the offspring of the adult.

I've uploaded the new pictures to the same e-bird link below.

Steve

Among the migration activity today at Fort Tilden, Queens were some very
high migrating Canada Goose flocks. Looking at one small group, I noticed
one that seemed out of whack. I managed to get some pictures that I could
blow up . To me, it looks like a Pink-footed Goose. A picture can be seen on
the e-bird page https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S121416069
. If I'm wrong, you can
correct me.

Some of the other notable results for those that like diurnal migration were
6970 Red-winged Blackbirds and 142 Purple Finches. Also a very few Pine
Siskins and the first of the season Eastern Bluebirds It may not be well
known that the latter annually migrate through the western end of Long
Island along the shore.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose in Nassau County

2018-12-18 Thread Donna Schulman
The original report by Steve Schellenger was referring to Lake Success the
village in the town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, not a lake. It's a
well-known area to those of us who grew up in Queens and Long Island.

*A Pink-footed Goose was found late Sunday 12/16/18 at 4pm on the Queens
County CBC on Marcus Ave. in Lake Success. It was on the ball field on the
north side of the street between Lakeville Rd. and New Hyde Park Rd. with a
flock of Canada Geese. This is in Nassau County.*

According to Google Street View, Merillon Field is the name of the trio of
softball/baseball diamonds which border the south side of the pond on which the
Pink-footed Goose has been seen. If an eBird Hot Spot is created it should

In fairness, I don’t think that body of water has a name.
I seem to recall that it’s more like a sump (rather unnaturally rectangular)
with the baseball field to the south of it.
Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose in Nassau County

2018-12-17 Thread Gus Keri
Hi everyone,

Apparently, there is a confusion about the name of the pond where the goose is
at. The first report said it's Lake Success. But if you put Lake Success in
Google map, you get a lake that is north of the Northern State Parkway (NSP).
The goose is at the pond that is south of the NSP. In the middle of the
triangle that is made by NST, Marcus Ave and New Hyde Park Rd. (exit 25 on NSP
toward Marcus Ave.)
I couldn't find the name of this pond anywhere.
Any time you click on one of the four water bodies in Lake Success Village, you
see the words "Lake Success" pop up.

The confusion continues with reporting this bird to eBird. You see all kind of
names for this location.
I hope someone who lives in the area could clarify to us the proper name.
And I think eBird should assign a hot spot name for this location.

I spent two hours today until the goose decided to wake up and swim around.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Coxsackie, The Greene County

2017-12-06 Thread Richard Guthrie
At around 4 o'clock this evening, while manning my station for the Winter
Raptor Survey at the Coxsackie Flats I scanned through a large group (1,200
- 1,500 birds) of Canada Geese in a harvested cornfield on a short dead-end
road: Barrus Road - which begins at the southern end of Bronk (same family
as The Bronx) Mill Road and Old Plank Road (County Rt 9).

I spotted a mid-sized uniformly dark sooty-brown goose with a pale
horizontal stripe along the flanks and silvery edges to the folded wing
feathers. It had no white features on the head or neck and a smallish dark
bill - a Pink-footed Goose.

The goose was about 360 ft. (110m) to the east of the road, actively
feeding on scattered corn cobs along with the Canada Geese and one Cackling
Goose. I watched it for about 15-20 minutes, easily picking it out again
anytime after I had lost track of.

There is a small group of mobile homes along a short spur off Barrus Road
and two other houses along the road. The house directly across (west) from
the cornfield has a high fence around it, presumably to keep the two large
dogs in. The dogs are very noisy if anyone is walking along the road but
otherwise very friendly (at least when the homeowner is present). When I've
met the homeowner in the past, I've found him to be very friendly and
interested in my bird work that I've been doing. But those dogs

I remained in my car as I was observing the geese since the nearest Canada
Geese were very agitated. I was afraid that if I got out the whole bunch
would lift off taking the Pink-footed Goose along with them. Because of
roadside shrubbery, I could not get a clear photo of the goose. All the
geese were still there when I went up the road to turn around and leave.

I suspect that the geese come into that cornfield to feed and roost for the
night. I don't know for sure, but I believe they all go over to the nearby
correctional facility grounds where there are some - restricted access -
fields and ponds. A large group of geese flew in at around 4 o'clock. I
can't say whether the Pink-footed Goose was already in the field by then or
if it came in with that bunch.

In winters past, large groups of Canada Geese would first go from the
correctional complex fields down to the Hudson River at the Coxsackie Boat
Launch Park to hang out for a while before going to their night roost. This
has not been happening this season so far, perhaps because hunting season
is still open.

Bottom Line: I suspect that it will be difficult to see this goose, if it
does return to that field, unless you stay in your car and hope that none
of the few neighbors inadvertently disturbs the larger flock of Canada
Geese. But I also believe that if everyone stays in their cars, all will be
good. Let's just hope that the Pink-footed Goose returns.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose in Malone (Franklin Co.)

2017-11-09 Thread Joan Collins
I am posting on behalf of Hollis White (he is having trouble posting to the
list). Hollis and Denise White found a Pink-footed Goose at the Malone
Recreational Park yesterday (Wed. Nov. 8, 2017) among the hordes of Snow
Geese (a major birding attraction at this location in Nov.!). Hollis plans
to be at the park again today. This appears to be a first record for this
species in Franklin County.

I heard about this sighting from Willie D'Anna (thanks Willie!) this
morning. (Hollis sent a photo of the goose to a friend in Canada, who
forwarded it to Willie and he identified the goose.) I called Hollis this
morning to confirm the location and he asked me to post on his behalf.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose, w. Bronx Co., NYC 12/29

2016-12-29 Thread Thomas Fiore
Thursday, 29 December, 2016 - Van Cortlandt Park, western Bronx (N.Y.
City)

A Pink-footed Goose was again found today (in the rain) on the Parade
Grounds field adjacent to Broadway (which is north of about West 246
Street) - this species and the many Canada Geese often moving about on
the field, can be on other areas of the large field, but this late
morning, were nearer to the south edge - the other areas to look could
be the lake, & perhaps farther outlying sections of this large (but
more wooded than not) park. A Cackling (Richardson's type) and a Snow
Goose may be in the flock[s] as well, but not all of these geese are
constantly in just one group.

Good luck if you try; please give geese enough space to feed (and not
flush due to any birder activity), thanks!

good birding,

more wooded than not) park. A Cackling (Richardson's type) and a Snow
Goose may be in the flock[s] as well, but not all of these geese are
constantly in just one group.

Good luck if you try; please give geese enough space to feed (and not
flush due to any birder activity), thanks!

good birding,

2016-12-28 Thread Thomas Fiore
Jesse and all,

Thanks - and good sleuthing - your mention (presumably) of this wouId
be the "stadium" area and baseball fieId that is south of West 242
Street, just east of Broadway (?) - which is a short way south of the
Parade Grounds area in Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx County - this is not
far from the southwest corner of that entire park - if this is the new
area where the rare goose & other geese were found moving to by you,
later this morning. It is not far north of Van Cortlandt Park South
(a street name) & just east of Broadway (in the west Bronx).

It seems very possible the goose flocks may relocate to the Parade
Grounds, too - as there may be more grass to feed on there than most
anywhere else within the park (and that is not patrolled by golf
course personnel) - so a check there, and at the nearby Van Cortlandt
lake may prove fruitful for any goose-gazing.

Updates are appreciated on a day-by-day basis as this is a species
still on many birders wish-lists both subscribed-to, &/or watching
this and other list-servs and reports!

Good luck if you try; please give the geese enough space to feed (and

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose, VC Park, Bronx Co. 12/26 (Monday)

2016-12-27 Thread Thomas Fiore
Monday, 26 December, 2016 - Van Cortlandt Park, western Bronx (N.Y.
City)

A Pink-footed Goose was again on the Parade Grounds field adjacent to
Broadway (which is north of about West 246 Street), on Monday, and was
of course available for those counting at that site for the 12/26
Bronx-Westchester CBC; these notes to confirm to this list that the
bird was present;

with perhaps well over 1,000 Canada Geese by 4 pm, with more geese
having come back in to the field to feed in the afternoon; Snow &
(Richardson's) Cackling Geese, were also seen; there were up to 4
(end-of-day) observers present, myself one of them & staying to dusk,
many geese including the Pink-footed staying out feeding on the Parade
Ground to well after sunset. We maintained distance, & restricted our
movements; at times, when some non-birders chanced to walk near the
geese & got them nervous, the flock all pulled away, walking just a
modest distance from the human disturbances as has happened perhaps
each day with the larger goose flocks here.

The goose flock here is shy and can be scared off, if approached too
quickly or too closely; if you go seeking this Pink-footed, please
keep a respectful distance (if any geese start to move off at your
approach, it means you are getting too close for them);

There may be times when some or much of the flock stays on the Van
Cortlandt lake (which incidentally is a very short way to the east-
southeast of the Parade Ground, perhaps 50 yards away at the nearest
points, & not more than a 10 minute walk from the NW end of that lake
to the eastern edge of the Parade Ground field) - the geese may be
most-likely on the lake in the first hours of morning, but any could
be there at other hours as well.

We know that the goose flocks may at first light, and sometimes for
hours after that, remain on the nearby lake (a golf course is at the
east side of the lake, away from the Parade Ground area - & there are
other portions of golf course greens in this very large city park).
These geese may (or may not) roost on the Van Cortlandt lake
overnight, and may come to feed on the Parade Ground at some point in
the day (which may or may not be early, based on some past goose
observations at this site). If one sees no geese at all on the field,
the lake is the next best bet - and a scope is very much useful, for
either area - & to avoid much walking about should the (Canada) goose
numbers be high - with high-quality optics, it may be posslble to have
good views thru around sunset, according to the weather, of course!

Van Cortlandt Park has shown potential to attract other goose species
in recent years such as Barnacle, Greater White-fronted, and Cackling,
as well as Snow - we would be delighted to have a Ross's join the
geese "on parade" (grounds)! The Pink-footed Goose apparently is a
first record for that park and for Bronx County.

It may be added that the #1 'local' subway line (if coming from
another borough or farther downtown, one MUST change at West 96th &
Broadway as the last possible switch from any express #2 or #3, to the
#1 Broadway local uptown, which can take 30 minutes from West 96th-
Broadway station, to the final stop of the #1 train, which is (uptown)
at 242 Street & Van Cortlandt Park in the west Bronx. There are
restrooms - generally open - at the far south side of the Parade
Ground fields, in the nature center (NYC Parks Dept) building, next to
the manor (an historic house) - these structures about 10 minutes or
much less from the elevated subway terminal, & Broadway (at 242 Street).

Nearby highways, & exits, include the Major Deegan Expwy - I-87 (NY
State Thruway) with the nearest exit being Van Cortlandt (Park) South,
from which exit one would go west a very short way to Broadway, and a
right up (north on) Broadway just a few blocks to past West 246
Street, where parking can be had, sometimes easily, adjacent the
Parade Grounds field (and sometimes hard to find quick parking
immediately) - Another highway & exit with fast access to here is the
Henry Hudson Parkway, at the Broadway exit (in the Bronx!) from which:
one goes south a very short way on Broadway, again to near West
246-250 Streets, where any available parking will be immediately
adjacent the Parade Grounds of Van Cortlandt Park. Parking here in
daytime is generally safe, with the usual precautions to not leave
valuables, & certainly not in view, just as anywhere else; there is
gas and food available nearby on Broadway in either direction. The NYC-
Yonkers city lines are very nearby to the north - just up Broadway.

Good luck if you try, and please, please give the geese enough space
to feed (and not flush due to any birder's actions), thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose yes, VCP Bronx Co. NYC 12/25

2016-12-25 Thread Thomas Fiore

Sunday, Christmas Day, 25 December 2016

As noted to this list, the Pink-footed Goose was present with a nearby
Snow Goose, & perhaps 500++ Canada Geese as well as a brief look at
what may have been a Richardson's Cackling Goose, all at the north-
most end of the Van Cortlandt Park Parade Grounds, as of 4:15 & just
afterwards (to sunset) in the west Bronx (NYC) - the geese perhaps
staying where it was not as likely they'd be harassed by non-birders
who, as noted, sometimes do intentionally run after or set dogs after
the geese at this site, for no good reasons; it happens - even though
by far the majority of park users do not behave in these ways towards
wildlife at that park & at the least, the geese are fairly cautious
about what is happening in their feeding areas! Photos of the geese
were again obtained in end-of day sun.

Peace - & good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose late-day 12/23, VC Park, Bronx County

2016-12-23 Thread Thomas Fiore
Friday, 23 December, 2016 - Van Cortlandt Park, western Bronx (N.Y.
City)

At about 4 pm (and from what I inferred from others on-scene, for some
hours before, but perhaps now & then moving off to the Van Cortlandt
lake, again??) on the Parade Grounds field adjacent to Broadway, north
of about West 246 Street, the Pink-footed Goose, in amongst over 300
(at 4 pm, but with many more coming in to the field to feed in the
next 30-40 minutes!) Canada Geese, were seen;there were up to 6
(end-of-day) observers present, myself one of them & staying to dusk,
the geese including the Pink-footed, staying out feeding on the Parade
Ground to well after sunset. We maintained some distance, &
restricted our movements; at times, when some non-birders chanced to
walk near the geese & got them nervous, the flock all pulled away,
walking just a modest distance from the human disturbance[s].

The goose flock here is shy and can be scared off, if approached too
quickly or too closely; if you go seeking this Pink-footed, please
keep a respectful distance (if any geese start to move off at your
approach, it means you are getting too close for them); It seems that
there may have been a time when some or much of the flock went from
the Van Cortlandt lake (which incidentally is a very short way to the
east-southeast of the Parade Ground, perhaps 50 yards away at the
nearest points, & not more than a 10 minute walk from the NW end of
that lake to the eastern edge of the Parade Ground field) - over to
the field, which is visible from Broadway, about opposite West 246-250
Streets - a very short way up (north of) the #1 subway's big elevated
terminal-station, the end of that line (final stop) in the Bronx. And
we know that the goose flocks may at first light, and sometimes for
hours after that, remain on the nearby lake (a golf course is at the
east side of the lake, away from the Parade Ground area, & there are

numbers be high - with high-quality optics, it may be posslble to have
good views thru around sunset or just after, according to the weather,
of course!

I've been informed that this Pink-footed Goose may be a first record
for Bronx County NY (if there is information & documentation to the
contrary, it would be of interest to some on this list-serve); Van
Cortlandt Park has shown potential to attract other goose species in

It may be added that in addition the #1 'local' subway line (if coming
from another borough or farther downtown, one MUST change at West 96th
& Braodway as the last possible switch from any express #2 or #3, to
the #1 Broadway local uptown, which can take 30 minutes from West 96th-
Broadway station, to the final stop of the #1 train, which is (uptown)
at 242 Street & Van Cortlandt Park in the west Bronx. Nearby
highways, & exits, include the Major Deegan Expwy - I-87 (NY State
Thruway) with the nearest exit being Van Cortlandt (Park) South, from
which exit one would go west a very short way to Broadway, and a right
up (north on) Broadway just a few blocks to past West 246 Street,
where parking can be had, sometimes easily, adjacent the Parade
Grounds field (and sometimes hard to find quick parking immediately) -
Another highway & exit with fast access to here is the Henry Hudson
Parkway, at the Broadway exit (in the Bronx!) from which: one goes
south a very short way on Broadway, again to near West 246-250
Streets, where any available parking will be immediately adjacent the
Parade Grounds of Van Cortlandt Park. (parking here in daytime is
generally safe, with the usual precautions to not leave valuables, &
certainly not in view, just as anywhere else; there is gas and food
nearby on Broadway, and there are restrooms - generally open - at the
far south side of the Parade Ground fields, in the nature center (NYC
Parks Dept) building, next to the manor (an historic house) - these
structures about 10 minutes or much less from the elevated subway
terminal, & Broadway (at 242 Street).

Good luck if you try, and please, please give the geese enough space
to feed (and not flush due to any birder's actions), thanks!

And
we know that the goose flocks may at first light, and sometimes for
hours after that, remain on the nearby lake (a golf course is at the
east side of the lake, away from the Parade Ground area, & there are
other portions of golf course greens in this very large city park).

These geese may (or may not) roost on the Van Cortlandt lake
overnight, and may come to feed on the Parade Ground at some point in
the day (which may or may not be early, based on some past goose
observations at this site). If one sees no geese at all on the field,
the lake is the next best bet - and a scope is very much useful, for
either area - & to avoid much walking about should the (Canada) goose
numbers be high - with high-quality optics, it may be posslble to have
good views thru around sunset or just after, according to the weather,
of course!

I've been informed that this Pink-footed Goose may be a first record
for Bronx County NY (if there is information & documentation to the
contrary, it would be of interest to some on this list-serve); Van
Cortlandt Park has shown potential to attract other goose species in
recent years such as Barnacle, Greater White-fronted, and Cackling, as
well as Snow - we would be delighted to have a Ross's join the geese
"on parade" (grounds)!

It may be added that in addition the #1 'local' subway line (if coming
from another borough or farther downtown, one MUST change at West 96th

Goose was on the far shore opposite from the tennis courts - tame and resting
and in the water very close to the path.

Woodpecker was active and vocal. Walk on the tennis court side heading north
along bike path past bridge. A number of houses up there is a brighter yellow
house. The red headed woodpecker is in that general area. Bird's head is
turning red...

We also saw the tamest immature red tail hawk. It was on the ground with dead
squirrel in its talons - people jogged five feet from the bird. Who was not at
all stressed by humans.

Also present of note: one immature yellow bellied sapsucker, a great blue
heron and a active belted kingfisher. Kestrel flew fast through the scattered
trees then flew past the park and landed on top of the high school dome.

No cackling goose for us today, alas.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose, Bronx Co. 12/22

2016-12-22 Thread Thomas Fiore

Thursday, 22 December, 2016 - Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx (N.Y. City)

On the Parade Grounds field adjacent to Broadway, north of about West
246 Street, I found a Pink-footed Goose, in amongst well over 1,000
Canada Geese, very late this afternoon - many photos were taken, from
a distance!

The goose flock here is shy, and can be spooked if approached too
quickly or too closely; if you go seeking this Pink-footed, please
keep a respectful distance (if any geese start to move off at your
approach, it means you are getting too close for them); when seen,
around 3:15 thru just past 4 pm, the Pink-footed was mostly nearer the
south part of the big goose-flock, and even though it moved more into
the center of the very extensive field, this was in keeping with
general "drift" of the Canadas, as they all fed & milled about, a very
few also resting on the grass.

These geese may (or may not) roost on the Van Cortlandt lake
overnight, and may come to feed on the Parade Ground at some point in
the morning (which may or may not be very early, based on some past
goose observations at this site). There was also a Snow Goose
present that went off to the east (perhaps to the Van Cortlandt lake),
& that then came back later.

I did not give full attention to all of this 1,000+ flock of geese,
and it is possible other species (such as Cackling or even some
other), may have been present; once the Pink-footed was suspected,
most focus was on that for this late afternoon. Andrew Baksh and many
other birders will be out counting (including this area) on Monday,
12/26, for the Bronx-Westchester CBC which is compiled by Michael
Bochnik.

Good luck if you try, and please, please, give the geese enough space
to feed & not flush due to any birder's actions, thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose @ Parade Grounds Van Cortlandt Park Bronx NY

2016-12-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
Late this afternoon, Tom Fiore found a Pink-footed Goose among the flock of
Branta Canadensis that were feeding on the Parade Grounds at Van Cortlandt Park.

I know this find will excite many listers and I ask that with the Bronx CBC
just days away, to please exercise good behavior if you decide to twitch.
Meaning, try not to chase it away before count day :-)

An excellent find by Tom and underscores the importance of Van Cortlandt Park -
especially the Parade Grounds. I'll take this opportunity to unashamedly again
cite the issues and concerns about plans to pave the Putnam Trail. See here for
more information http://www.savetheputnamtrail.com/

Our community need to remain engaged in the changes (some not good) taking
place in many of the places we love.

Congrats Tom, a fine bird just in time for the CBC! Now we just need it to
stick.

Cheers,
