[nysbirds-l] Gray Kingbird on Staten Island, 9/22/22

2022-09-22 Thread Anthony Ciancimino
Just after 5PM this afternoon, Maya Shikhman found a Gray Kingbird by the
playground at Miller Field, on Staten Island’s eastern shore. Subsequent
efforts shortly after the initial sighting were not successful, however, there
are many areas in the general vicinity where an individual of the species can
linger.

Neighboring waterfront areas such as Midland & Cedar Grove Beaches, which both
touch Miller Field, may be worth checking tomorrow.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird on Staten Island, 9/11/22

2022-09-11 Thread Anthony Ciancimino
This morning I had a Western Kingbird fly by me along River Rd. on Staten

found the bird at the nearby Amazon Fulfillment Center here (40.61770° N,

The bird was hunting from a patch of trees bordering Old Place Creek. It may
be worth checking for the bird on the opposite side of the marsh from the kayak
access site here (40.62715° N, 74.18234° W).

2021-12-02 Thread Corey Finger
Still present on Staten Island. At the entrance to the marina in Great Kills.

Oddly, I’m the only birder here.

Good Birding,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gray Kingbird Great Kills Park YES 11/30

2021-11-30 Thread Brendan Fogarty
No entrance fee. It was seen near the entrance to the marina today 11/30 at
1:15 and 2:00, on both sides of the road, more recently on beach side. It
was a little farther north around midday. It is sometimes on low and
conspicuous ornamental shrubs right along the road. Relocates frequently.

Best,
Brendan

[nysbirds-l] Gray Kingbird Great Kills Park Staten Island

2021-11-29 Thread Mike
Gray Kingbird currently being seen in sumac stand across street from large
concrete block structure that holds sand and also around pines close to
concrete structure. Scoped from the first big parking lot across street from
ranger station. Kingbird is active and flying from one side of the road to the
other, often perching and flying to ground to feed. Found by Chad and Nicole
from Illinois.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Heckscher SP, Suffolk, flyby

2021-11-04 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This morning as I was leaving Heckscher SP around 9:45 I noticed a small
flock of Am. Robins flying over my car with a smaller, yellow-bellied bird
trailing. I jumped out to get bins on it, and fortunately it circled back
around and over me giving me a decent, more extended look. The flock flew
to the north and disappeared over the trees, so not exactly chaseable,
though it could possibly settle in somewhere in the park.

Thanks for the reminder, Andrew.

[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird - Staten Island

2021-09-26 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
There is currently a Tropical Kingbird at Mount Loretto Unique Area on the
south shore of Staten Island, found by Dick Veit. Both he and Anthony
Ciancimino have heard the bird, and taken photos.

You can get there by taking the woodlot path, to the right of the parking
lot.

[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird brief sighting 10/29 at The Landing at 10 am Dobbs Ferry

2020-10-29 Thread Gail Benson
Tom Warren - original finder of the Tropical Kingbird - just let us know
that he briefly saw the Kingbird at 10 am at the Landing (area it was
originally found ( but after perching up it flew off into the fog with a
flock of similarly-sized birds. No sighting since then although he says
people are looking in the rain. See yesterday's posts for info about The
Landing condo units (private) etc and waterfront area bird frequented.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird

2020-10-29 Thread Robert Lewis
I haven't seen any posts here yet today.

The local (Westchester) bird app reports that some people looked for the bird
between about 7:00 and 8:30am with no success.

The bird had been seen at several places between the Ardsley train station and
Wicker's Creek.  That is approximately between 41.027419, -73.876248 and
41.018232, -73.879174.  It was never seen very far from the river.

Parking is free and easy at the south end of the Ardsley station.  It is easy
to walk on paths from there to Wicker's Creek.  Access to Wicker's Creek is via
the foot bridge at 41.019474, -73.877746.  This bridge is open to all.
However, the public cannot legally park anywhere in the housing development
called "The Landing."  That includes Clubhouse Drive, Landing Drive, etc.
There do not appear to be many, if any, students physically on the Mercy
College campus.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird

2020-10-28 Thread larry trachtenberg

It was very exciting to see yet another rare yellow western kingbird in New
York State let alone one only a few miles down river from where I live up the
river in Ossining. After spending two hours unsuccessfully this morning in
the rain, a second trip proved fruitful, as not only was the bird cooperative,
I was able to meet some of the birding luminaries in NYS, and thanks TB for the
scope views This was my third western type Kingbird in NY, a Couch’s on a fire
escape in the West Village for Christmas 2014, a Western at my patch, Croton
Point Park in August 2019, and now Tropical. Shai and others let me know of
previous sightings in Brooklyn and Montauk of Cassin’s kingbird so maybe one
day. With more rain coming and it being warm enough for insects hopefully it
sticks around a bit.

Interesting that in a week where we lost two, three-named Texas troubadours, a
Texas bird shows up on the Hudson River, so let’s dance a bit with worn out
shoes for Jerry Jeff Walker (OK he was from Oneonta, NY but a Texan at heart),
and the old five and dimer, Billy Joe Shaver, who join Townes Van Zandt and
Stevie Ray Vaughn (and any other three-named Texans I forgot). And be careful
to those still with us, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, John Dee
Graham, and Robert Earl Keen, because the road don’t go on forever and the
party does end, but may a new one begin next Tuesday.

[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird, Westchester Co. NY (seen Wed., 10/28)

2020-10-28 Thread Thomas Fiore
Thanks, Anne Swaim, and Brendan Fogarty, & all, for the info and updates, for
Wednesday, Oct. 28th! re,
the above species in the subject-line again seen. This is not that far from the
NYS Thruway and Rt. I-287.
Seems a Metro-North commuter-line train station is also not far (on the Hudson
Line route).

And congrat’s. to the discover Tom Warren & ID-helper J. Ansellem, for
Tuesday’s find, a first for the state,
in some sense, a slightly ‘overdue’ one, simply given this species (rare)
occurence elsewhere in the region.

Please (also) update to this list-serve if there are changes to the status - of
bird, or of location / access, etc.

p.s. - if there are some locally-owned small businesses in the immediate area,
takeaway food, coffee & etc.
please do go in or order something, in support of local business and also be on
best-behavior with locals -
we are all acting-ambassadors for the love of birds and nature. Thanks for your
consideration!

good birding - & stay safe out there.

I found a Western Kingbird by Fort Jay on Governors Island, NYC. Seconds later
an immature Cooper’s Hawk blasted in a pursued it, ignoring the numerous nearby
Flickers, Robins, and Starlings.

I relocated the Kingbird in the tall trees in nearby Nolan Park so happily it
wasn’t caught. Being seen now (2pm) hawking insects from tops of trees.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird - Robert Moses, Suffolk

2020-07-11 Thread Mike McBrien
Just after 9:00, a Western Kingbird flew past the pavilion at Robert Moses SP
Field 2, traveling west to east. Subsequent efforts to relocate it over the
past hour have not turned it up, but it was flying relatively low and it’s
likely worth keeping an eye out for it. The seawatching this morning was very
foggy and rather unproductive, despite good company.

Best,
Mike McBrien

2019-09-30 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
Right now I am viewing a very cooperative Western Kingbird in Kissena
Corridor Park. It is in the eastern section of the park on the north side
of the park. It’s viewable from Underhill Road. It’s about a half a block
from 164th Street.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Croton: YES 8/24

Just as we entered landfill from ball field, we saw Western Kingbird in tree
line. It did fly down and perch  in landfill 9:15.

At the landfill, a skittish Upland Sandpiper continues, occasionally flying
around giving good looks and listens to flight calls, but hard to see on the
ground. It's been ranging over most of the area of the landfill, seemingly not
faithful to any particular spot. Generally the western/southern part of the
landfill.

The kingbird is still present, moving around between the snags high on the hill
across the road from the northeastern section of the landfill and the trees
close to the road.

2019-08-20 Thread Robert Lewis
WEKI still present making the usual rounds. Good views on dead snags from
upper area. 10:00am. Bring a folding chair food drink. Enjoy
