[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird on Staten Island, 9/11/22

2022-09-11 Thread Anthony Ciancimino
This morning I had a Western Kingbird fly by me along River Rd. on Staten
Island’s west shore, and while poking around the area for awhile I subsequently
found the bird at the nearby Amazon Fulfillment Center here (40.61770° N,
74.18285° W).

The bird was hunting from a patch of trees bordering Old Place Creek. It may
be worth checking for the bird on the opposite side of the marsh from the kayak
access site here (40.62715° N, 74.18234° W).

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Heckscher SP, Suffolk, flyby

2021-11-04 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This morning as I was leaving Heckscher SP around 9:45 I noticed a small
flock of Am. Robins flying over my car with a smaller, yellow-bellied bird
trailing. I jumped out to get bins on it, and fortunately it circled back
around and over me giving me a decent, more extended look. The flock flew
to the north and disappeared over the trees, so not exactly chaseable,
though it could possibly settle in somewhere in the park.

Thanks for the reminder, Andrew.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird, Governors Island

2020-10-04 Thread Gabriel Willow
I found a Western Kingbird by Fort Jay on Governors Island, NYC. Seconds later
an immature Cooper’s Hawk blasted in a pursued it, ignoring the numerous nearby
Flickers, Robins, and Starlings.

I relocated the Kingbird in the tall trees in nearby Nolan Park so happily it
wasn’t caught. Being seen now (2pm) hawking insects from tops of trees.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird - Robert Moses, Suffolk

2020-07-11 Thread Mike McBrien
Just after 9:00, a Western Kingbird flew past the pavilion at Robert Moses SP
Field 2, traveling west to east. Subsequent efforts to relocate it over the
past hour have not turned it up, but it was flying relatively low and it’s
likely worth keeping an eye out for it. The seawatching this morning was very
foggy and rather unproductive, despite good company.

Best,
Mike McBrien

A Western Kingbird was seen briefly at Marine Park late this afternoon. It
perched in two different trees in a brushy area (which can be accessed via
E 38th street "entrance") before it flew off in the direction of the ball
field. Josh Malbin and Juan Salas joined me to try and re-find the bird.
Despite searching till around 6:30 pm, we were unsuccessful in our attempt

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird directions: Kings County

2017-09-25 Thread Sean Sime
>From Richard Payne's Ebird checklist...

Roughly starling-sized flycatcher with gray back, head, and breast (with
slightly darker ear patch); diagnostic black, square-tipped tail with white
outer tail feathers running the length of the tail. Short bill. Very little
yellow in belly compared to other Westerns I've seen, yellow more visible
in flight than at rest. Actively flycatching. Was only seen on the east
side of the model airplane road, the airplanes were buzzing around but that
did not seem to bother the bird. First seen at the intersection at
40°36'06.1"N 73°53'21.3"W ; Last seen around 40°36'13.8"N 73°53'18.5"W and
was moving between those two spots and disappearing into the trees to the
east.

Good luck if you go!

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird, Montauk

2015-12-13 Thread Douglas Futuyma
I was unable to find the King Eider either this morning (from 7:30 to 8:30)
or on a return visit to Camp Hero in early afternoon. I counted 43
Razorbills during these periods. No Cave Swallows were evident. The Western
Kingbird was conspicuous, near the restaurant, at 8:30 and again at 1:30.

Standard species of land birds seemed surprisingly sparse in Montauk County
Park and along East Lake Drive. On Lake Montauk, I saw 2 Common Loons and
not a single duck. Let's hope for better on the upcoming count.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird at West End 2 - Jones Beach

2015-10-14 Thread Shaibal Mitra
With this proven second Western Kingbird (at Jones Beach while a bird was
demonstrably present at Robert Moses SP), it is worth considering the
possibility that more than one individual has been involved in the observations
at RMSP dating back to 1 October.

I've been working with a student, Lucinda Zawadzki, on studying the timing and
stopover durations of fall vagrant Western Kingbirds and would be interested in
confirming or refuting the continuity of a single individual at RMSP 1 Oct to
present. Several people have sent me photos from the last three days at RMSP,
but I'd appreciate links or jpegs from earlier dates.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Continues at Robert Moses State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2015-10-14 Thread Ken Feustel
The previously reported Western Kingbird was observed this morning in the
picnic area west of RMSP Field 2. Since we were not actively looking for the
bird, we naturally found it in two additional locations - the golf course just
south of the club house and an hour later perched in a shrub at the volleyball
courts. Also present was a Clay-colored Sparrow in the picnic area feeding on
the panic grass with Savannah Sparrows, and an immature Red-headed Woodpecker
flying down the median opposite the Field 2 entrance. Additionally, we observed
a flyby Wilson’s Snipe along the four-wheel drive road at first light.

2015-10-13 Thread Pat Palladino
The bird is covering a lot of ground. It flew in from the east and was observed
feeding in the median at the parking lot exit. After about ten minutes it flew
west, landing in a pine at the turnaround. It then flew again and dropped down
in the vicinity of the picnic area adjacent to the golf course.

With help from Mike Cooper, I put in a vigil this evening, hoping to line up
the kingbird for Pat on her way home from work. We had no luck at all, even
after eagle-eyed Pat joined us.

Reluctant to give up, Pat decided to walk down the four-wheel drive track as I
headed home. As luck would have it, I found it sitting low in a leafless bush
in the median, opposite the toll booths (Robert Moses SP, Field 2). This was at

Western Kingbird seen late this morning around the eastern end of the golf
course at Robert Moses SP.

It can be quite elusive so some patients may be required.

It is probably best to view from the course clubhouse looking north and east.
There are golfers around so walking around on the course is not advisable.

All the best,

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Robert Moses Golf Course (Suffolk)

Western Kingbird seen late this morning around the eastern end of the golf
course at Robert Moses SP.

It can be quite elusive so some patients may be required.

It is probably best to view from the course clubhouse looking north and east.
There are golfers around so walking around on the course is not advisable.

All the best,

Pete

RE: [nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Robert Moses Golf Course (Suffolk)

2015-10-12 Thread Shaibal Mitra
With help from Mike Cooper, I put in a vigil this evening, hoping to line up
the kingbird for Pat on her way home from work. We had no luck at all, even
after eagle-eyed Pat joined us.

Reluctant to give up, Pat decided to walk down the four-wheel drive track as I
headed home. As luck would have it, I found it sitting low in a leafless bush
in the median, opposite the toll booths (Robert Moses SP, Field 2). This was at
6:05 pm.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird at Robert Moses State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2015-10-01 Thread Ken Feustel
This morning there was a Western Kingbird just south of the four-wheel drive
road at Robert Moses State Park. More specifically, the bird was just south of
the chain-link fence that separates the four-wheel drive road from the golf
course at Hole # 12. As far as we are aware, subsequent efforts to locate the
bird have been unsuccessful. Also present in good numbers were Eastern Phoebe,
Northern Flicker, and Palm Warbler. Photos of the Kingbird are on my flickr
site.
