[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret - Eastport, Suffolk County

2021-11-21 Thread Eileen Schwinn

Reported earlier this AM in the sod field, near the intersection of CR 51 and
Head of the Neck Rd, by Steve Biasetti, a Cattle Egret was refound at noon. New
location of the bird is the horse farm, across from the sod field. It was
walking among the horse paddocks and the horses, and best viewed from the
shoulder of Route 51, north side, just east of the turning lane on to Eastport
Manor Rd.
Thank you, Steve!

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, Croton Point Park

2021-11-03 Thread Joseph Wallace
First spotted last evening by a photographer before flying off, the bird
returned today. As of ten minutes ago, it was foraging in long grasses
between the eastern slope of the grassland hill and the phragmites marsh,
between the two roads/paths that bisect that area. Best place to park is in
the RV lot, the furthest lot from the entrance but the nearest to that
area.

There seems to be a Cattle Egret influx into the northeast with reports of good

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret in Point Lookout

2018-11-10 Thread Steve Walter
I had also heard something (third hand) about a Scissor-tailed in Point
Lookout. I didn't see anything official on this list, but I took a chance
anyway. Like everyone else after the initial sighting, I came up empty. A
small consolation prize was looking up at a high flying egret, going east to
west. My first impression was that of an out of the ordinary shape - chunky.
I managed to get a few pictures of it when it descended somewhat. Inspecting
my pictures upon getting home confirmed what I thought - a Cattle Egret.
Having mentioned that it descended somewhat, it's possible that it came down
in the area. Lido Preserve maybe? Anyone in the area ready to give up on
flycatchers might consider looking around.

At least I didn't have to go far to get to Pt. Lookout. I was at Jones Beach
West End, but left at 10:00. But even while at Point Lookout, and probably
just before leaving the area entirely at 11:30, I checked my e-mail for
reports of interest. Nothing at that point. That could be an issue with my
e-mail and carrier, but even checking the web based archives when I got
home, I do not see the initial report of the Gray Kingbird. The first thing
I see is a request for updates (at 11:21). Where did the initial report -
that I didn't see - go?

It had been moving toward Dale Ave, east of Cypress. It is amazing
how mowers are not bothering it. People with mowers are 30 to 40 feet away. I
guess the Egret enjoying the food left by the mowing process.Sent using Zoho

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret Relocated Liberty @ Liberty Marsh (NY)

2018-05-01 Thread sophiesaid
The previously reported Cattle Egret reported by Jim Hayes this morning has
been relocated tonight.
It flew in from the south, headed north over the Oil City Rd Liberty Loop
platform and landed in the field by the hunting platform.
It then circled back over the platform, and landed (in NY), east of the
platform. It was last seen flying east over the treeline.
Other NY portion of refuge notables: Two American Bittern seen in flight (one
landed east of platform and was in the same scope frame
as the Cattle Egret), and Sora calling. Also seen: snipe, and both yellowlegs.

A breeding-plumaged Cattle Egret fed along the Ocean Parkway at Oak Beach,
Suffolk, LI, around noon today.

NB: This is a busy highway where law enforcement is intolerant of people
parking, walking, or even pulling over. We witnessed several uncomfortable
episodes last spring when people couldn't resist attempting close, well-lit
photography of an obliging Upland Sandpiper in this area; such incidents
certainly don't make life any easier for the local birders who work this area

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, Central Park (many migrants), NYC 4/29 (Saturday)

2017-04-29 Thread Thomas Fiore
Saturday, 29 April, 2017 -

A Western Cattle Egret remains at the small greenspace along the north side of
West 28th Street, between Eighth & Ninth Avenues, in Manhattan, N.Y. City as of
about 8:15 a.m. today.

— — —
Central Park (in Manhattan) is again enjoying many expected migrants; there are
a minimum of 3 singing male Hooded Warblers in the park, one at the far south
end (Hallett Sanctuary area), with another in the far north end (woods) as
privately & publicly reported elsewhere, and the one already noted within the
Strawberry Fields section, by West 72 St. in Central. There may well be a 4th
male Hooded, as there are sightings in the east-Ramble, somewhat far from
Strawberry Fields, but it is also typical for many Hooded Warblers first
arriving in Central to wander a bit, & sometimes quite a bit, as they seek a
‘patch' they may (or may not) settle into for a longer visit.

A singing Yellow-throated Warbler is among many migrants near Summit Rock, a
rise (& in fact the highest natural point of land within the park) near West
83-84 Streets, just inside the park’s western edge; thanks to Brenda Inskeep
for updates on that; many other migrant species are being found at this moment
throughout all of the park; as usual the highest observer effort is in the
Ramble & vicinity as well as the northern end of the park.

A long-lingering, now-brightly-plumaged Red-headed Woodpecker remains in the
area of the park just west of East 68th Street, a short while ago it was
ranging a bit more, from nearer both E. 69 St. & to nearer E. 67 St. -
patience, & observing high branches from a good vantage point, may help in
spotting this bird. It is not that vocal, in recent months.

There are certain to be many more species of some interest to report later on.

good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, & Central Park, NYC - migrants are IN, 4/27

2017-04-27 Thread Thomas Fiore
A Western Cattle Egret was still present on the north side of West 28th Street
this Thuesday morning at 6:45 a.m., seen slightly nearer to the Ninth Ave. end
of the long linear greenspace there, rather than up in the center or nearer to
Eighth Ave. (i.e., just a bit more to the west than it’s most often been over
recent days). This is in Manhattan, N.Y. City, in the Chelsea neighborhood.

- - - - - - - - - - -

There’s been very good migration overnight thru the fog & drizzles, and at
least some areas in Central Park, in Manhattan are hopping with freshly-arrived
migrants -

Already before even 9 a.m. there are at least 20 warbler species in the park,
and such specials as SUMMER Tanager (in the north woods, a bit south of the
Blockhouse as of 8:15 a.m. but may be moving a bit); there are also many
new-for-year species just-in, & certain to be some additionals, perhaps
including a few more uncommon / rarer species found. It remains to be seen if
all of the park is active with migrants, or possibly the 2 regularly-busy areas
for fresh migrant arrivals, which are the Ramble (likely to be hopping with
observers for a good while, too!) and the north end of the park.

It looks likely this is the largest arrival of neotropical migrant passerines
so far this year, at least in this county.

Further reports as warranted, and no doubts by day’s end… and recommended for
at least NYC birders to, if possible, have a look around any local patch, where
you work, atttend school, or live, as there might be some bird[s] of note, or
at the least, a chance of some migrants. This is also the sort of day (with
moderate to locally-thick fog) when the day could get more “birdy” as it rolls
on, or, (perhaps) see a greater dispersal, & thus a bit less of any hot-spot
sort of activity concentrated, as fog lifts or clears out.

good -and ethical- birding,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, NYC, & fresh migrants, Central Park, 4/24

2017-04-24 Thread Thomas Fiore
Monday, 24 April, 2017
Manhattan, N.Y. City

A Western Cattle Egret is continuing on at the north side of West 28th St.,
between Eighth & Ninth Avenues, seen into this Mon. evening there. It’s been
possible, for those that aspire to such, to include 3 egret species on a day &
county list with the above, and from Central Park’s north end ‘fly-way’,
sighting a Snowy as well as the far-more-frequent Great Egret, which is regular
within the park as well. Snowy Egret can be seen on most days, with a bit of
effort or by chance, mainly from points north of 100th St. & these egrets
moving overhead, east-west & vice-versa. (this may also be observed from
outside the park in a sort of east-west-east ‘corridor’ between very roughly
100th & 125th Streets in Manhattan, which clearly parallels an ancient route
these waterbirds have known & are still able to utilize.) They are moving
between points in the upper East River / westernmost LI Sound, & the New Jersey
meadowlands region. In past years, the Snowy was a bit more of an occasional
to near-regular drop-in visitor at the north end of Central Park; this seems to
be less-regular in recent years. It’s possible they may still be seen doing so
around dawn or dusk hours, however.

- -
On what some may have thought a ‘slow’ birding day, there were at least a few
first-of-year sightings in various parts of Central Park, including the Ramble
area, the north end, & elsewhere around the park as found by some careful
observers. The lingering Wild Turkey was seen again today near the south edges
of the park, and close to the Seventh Ave. park entrance there.

At least 7 species of warbler were present & these included a first-of-spring
(in Central) Ovenbird, as well as Yellow Warbler, N. Waterthrush,
Black-and-white Warbler, modest numbers of Palm, many (35+, park-wide) Myrtle
(a.k.a. Yellow-rumped), and Pine (one in north end) Warbler[s]. Also found in
at least several locations were Warbling Vireo, another first-of-spring migrant
here in Central, although that & Ovenbird have been found elsewhere, in N.Y.C.,
& in points north by now. A singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak was present late in
the day in the Hallett Sanctuary at the south end of the park.Although
(native) sparrow numbers were fewer than in recent days, there were still
hundreds )park-wide) of White-throated, & numbers of Chipping, as well as some
Field, Swamp, Song, & Savannah Sparrow[s] (latter near compost area) today.
Some other migrants have been at least mentioned word-of-mouth, that might be
first-of-spring for Central...

A Red-headed Woodpecker in bright plumage continues its lengthy stay, still in
the area of the park just west of East 68th Street. It can require some
patience to spot this bird, which has often been quite high in upper branches.

A Red-necked Grebe was still present on the reservoir, increasingly bright in
plumage & quite late now, as we come into the last week of April. A very large
group of observers, including students from the South Bronx, watched the grebe
this mid-day. Much later on, another peaceful, quiet & inherehently-ethical
birding group was seen, moving towards the Ramble, led by Gabriel Willow, among
the many exemplary leaders who give walks for the NYC Audubon, or NYCAS.

Thanks to Ardith Bondi for the news on a rehabbed-&-released Clapper Rail, at
the Loch in the n. end of Central Park. Thanks also to (among others), Erika
Piik, Tony Gaszo, and Jordan Spindel, for individually noting some of the
migrants in the park later on in the day. My own visits there included early
morning, mid-day and near & thru end-of-day, in all parts of the park.

to near-regular drop-in visitor at the north end of Central Park; this seems to
be less-regular in recent years.

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, & Central Park, NYC 4/22-23 + extralim. Fieldfare in ME.

2017-04-23 Thread Thomas Fiore
Sunday, 23 April, 2017

A Fieldfare has been lingering at the same area in the state of Maine, U.S.A. -
quite a rare visitor to N. America; details & photos are in eBird and on that
state’s list & other bird-forums.

N.Y. City

A Western Cattle Egret continues its now-lengthy stay on the north side of West
28th St., between Eighth & Ninth Avenues, in Manhattan’s (N.Y. City) Chelsea
neighborhood into Sunday, April 23rd.

- - - - - - -
Central Park (Manhattan) has had visiting Wild Turkey previously, but the
latest sighting[s] received a bit more attention. The species is a long-time
resident in several locations less than 10 miles from Manhattan, and not too
many years ago, was also resident (for some years) on Manhattan, esp. at
locations at opposite ends, at Battery Park (south end of the island), and at
Inwood Hill Park (north end of the island). Of those that have wandered about
elsewhere in Manhattan, it’s often been suggested that those individuals may
have used the Hudson river corridor, on the island’s west edge, to move south,
&/or north, but this may have been only rarely observed. One was present in
Central Park from at least Thursday 4/20, as found & reported then by Carolyn
Smith in the park’s north end, & (presumed the same single individual) that
bird has been working zig-zaggingly but steadily south, to the southern end of
the park by Sunday morning. I was able to photograph the turkey at close range
this Sun. morning & with no disturbance (one man sleeping on sunny lawn 10
yards away), thousands of tourists passing, seeming unaware of the very large
bird just off several heavily-used paths & the park drive near its southwestern
extremity. During the time I was observing & photo’ing, no one else was
watching, and the turkey was feeding undisturbed by any activities, but that
may have been just a short respite from a variety of “risks” a ground-feeding
bird is going to encounter in a park such as this; on the other hand, as stated
above, this species has been a city-resident, including within Battery Park,
which sees millions of people per year (if not per month) passing thru.

A Red-necked Grebe at the C.P. reservoir has also lingered; there is no way to
accurately determine that this is the bird that was rehabbed & then released
there, last winter. However, as the grebe lingers on & on, it seems plausible
that it may not have the strength, or ability, to fly properly. If that’s so,
hopefully it will be able to, with time. Otherwise, sightings of this bird
might go on into & thru the summer.

The Red-headed Woodpecker in bright plumage has continued at its usual area
just west of East 68th St. in the park, often may be high in trees & sometimes
requires a bit of patience to see.

On Saturday 4/22, at Central Park, Wood Thrush was newly-noted by multiple
observers, although a few birders had tentatively (word-of-mouth) reported this
species as early as 4/20; in any case, the species was more-widely seen in
multiple NYC parks, in at least several boroughs (counties) of the city, as of
Saturday. It had also been found in a few other counties, farther north.

Some of the same warblers & other typical mid-April migrants that have been in
Central for days are still in some of the same areas as previously.

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret, Manhattan NYC 4/21

2017-04-21 Thread Thomas Fiore
A Western Cattle Egret continues on this Friday, April 21 in Manhattan (N.Y.
City) at the n. side of W. 28th St., between Eighth & Ninth Ave’s.; around
mid-day today the egret was not looking so well and was somewhat hunkered-in at
an edging to freshly-plowed dirt, perhaps sheltering from a chill wind.

Brief stops at several midtown parks did not show a great many or variety of
migrants, but there were a few. Some, & possibly many, of Thursday’s migrants
at Central Park seem to have moved on again. A Red-necked Grebe was still
present on the Central Park reservoir today.

by a few others, in various media. Should that grebe linger on into next week,
it will certainly seem very likely that it is the same which was rehabilitated
in Manhattan & subsequently released to the CP reservoir. It is mobile within
the reservoir & it seems to be feeding well.

Peaceful birding,

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret and Eastern Bluebirds at Pelham Bay Park in Bronx County, NY

2016-11-12 Thread Jared Cole
Matthieu Benoit and I (Jared Cole) birded Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx, NY,
on 11/11/2016 from sunrise (about 6:40am) to sunset (about 4:40pm).

We started at Twin Islands, eventually concluding in the Southern Zone of
the park. We did not observe any morning flight. We did have a good
diversity (in low numbers) of several migratory/resident raptors, including
Bald Eagles, Northern Harrier, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk, and Peregrine Falcon. We had 8 Emberizidae sparrows
including Eastern Towhee, American Tree Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Swamp
Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, and
Dark-eyed Junco.

Two species that stood out were Eastern Bluebirds and Cattle Egret, both
observed by the landfill. We spent just under an hour (3:20-4:10pm) along
the edge of the landfill in the southern zone of the park. We had 6 Eastern
Bluebirds fly up onto the barbwire fence and then over into the landfill
area. Just after passing the landfill, we set up along the fence and had a
Cattle Egret fly by. The Cattle Egret flew southeast from the edge of the
landfill, but we lost it as it flew over the docks that stick into
Eastchester Bay. We snapped photos of both species and they are on the
eBird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32507644.

I will be uploading the other lists to eBird later but wanted to get this
one out in case birders wanted to have a look in The Bronx tomorrow.

[nysbirds-l] Cattle Egret @ Fort Tidlen Queens Co...

2016-10-25 Thread Andrew Baksh
While trying to get in on a pretty much non existent migration flight at Fort
Tilden, I stumbled upon a Cattle Egret loafing on the soccer/rugby fields. This
one showed even less breeding plumes on its head than Rob Jett's Floyd Bennett
Field bird and looked more like John Young's bird from Van Cortlandt Park.

Today's CAEG (Cattle Egret) makes it 3 seen for the month of October and 4 in
total for the year for me, having seen one on the East Pond earlier in the
year. With Peter Dorosh's report of another CAEG documented by Gus Keri at Bush
Terminal Pier Park in Brooklyn. We could have at the moment 3-4 CAEG in play
(not sure if the Bronx bird is still being seen). I wonder how many more we are
missing that are out there in our area.

Cheers,

"I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of
others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick
Douglass
