[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern, Lark Sparrow - Buffalo/Fort Erie

2013-11-25 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Today was the first since the discovery of the Elegant Tern last Wednesday
that it was not reported. There were a number of people out looking, both
from the Canadian side and at the north end of Squaw Island. Though the
tern was drooping his wings on occasion, he was video'ed yesterday preening
vigorously, so he appeared to have quite a bit of life in him yet. Wonder
where he will turn up next..

The LARK SPARROW in Fort Erie, Ontario was very cooperative today. It was
at the same place as seen yesterday - the location was initially incorrectly
given on the Ontbirds list as the corner of Highland and Niagara Parkway.
The correct location is north of there, between Bowen Road and Central Ave,
along the Niagara Parkway. The parkway runs right next to the Niagara
River. There is a small park on the west side of the road at this location
and the sparrow was seen on the ground near the paved path, which is close
to the road, several times. It was also seen with House Sparrows in bushes
next to the river. It has also been seen in the ornamental conifer at 769
Niagara Parkway, the house just north of the small park, where the House
Sparrows often roost.

There are phenomenal numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls from Buffalo/Fort Erie to
the southern end of Grand Island, perhaps 25,000. Finding anything
different among them is a real challenge - we couldn't do it today. The
spectacle that they make when they all lift off and fly around together is
truly awesome - a National Geographic moment as someone said today.

Photos of the LARK SPARROW can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern - Buffalo

2013-11-23 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
According to three reports that I have seen this morning, it seems like the
ELEGANT TERN is still (as of 11:30) showing well at the north end of Squaw
Island. Directions as per a previous post. Franklin's and Little Gulls and
Black-legged Kittiwake are also in the area.

[nysbirds-l] ELEGANT TERN - Buffalo, NY

2013-11-23 Thread joetf1973
NY and ON Birders,

It appears that the ELEGANT TERN has been seen again this morning on the north
end of Squaw Island (Buffalo, NY). Also seen recently in the area are Common
Terns, Black-legged Kittiwake, Franklin's Gull and Little Gull. These birds are
all associating with the large numbers of Boneparte's Gulls that are on the
Upper Niagara River this time of year. For directions, use Google Maps and
search for "Squaw Island, Buffalo, NY".

Best of luck if you head out!

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern - Buffalo - YES; Sabine's Gull - Barcelona - NO

2013-11-22 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
The ELEGANT TERN was first reported from the north end of Squaw Island today
by Dominic Sherony and others around 9:00. I did not hear any other reports
until Jay Powell texted that he had great views of it at 4:30 at the same
location.

I have posted a few more disgiscoped photos of the bird here:

http://www.betsypottersart.com/willie-s-photos/2013-big-year/

and Jim Pawlicki has posted some nice flight shots of the bird here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmpawli10

The juvenile SABINE'S GULL at Barcelona Harbor, found by Jim Pawlicki a few
days ago, was not seen today to my knowledge, despite an intensive search by
several observers.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern - LI bird vs. Niagara River

2013-11-21 Thread tigger64
Photos I've seen of the Long Island bird from 4-4.5 months ago show it in a
similar plumage. Perhaps comparing photos will find something that confirms
same/different bird, especially as more photos of the Niagara River bird emerge.

Congratulations to Vicki Rothman on a great find!

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern- no, "Lifer" - yes

2013-07-10 Thread robert adamo
Sorry for the late post - I'm hoping that someone, not seeing this negative
post yesterday, decided to give it a shot, and got the bird today !

Yesterday,as planned, I met with Rich Guthrie & Jon Askildsen at Cupsogue
Co. Pk. at 0800, to try for the Elegant Tern. Having arrived earlier, they
had made contact with Dave Klauber & Bobby Rossetti, who were on the flats
already. A plan was soon formed, which had Dave & Bobby remaining in place,
while the 3 of us headed for Tiana Beach... and points east. We checked
every good spot (we could access) from the sand bar in Shinnicock Bay (n/o
the inlet) back to Tiana, where we found 4.5 new birders...but no new birds
! During the eastward leg of our survey, there had been less birds and zero
birders at this location.

The .5 birder was a .5 part of my racking up another "Lifer" ! Her name is
Katie, she is 8 months old, and is the grand-daughter of Eileen & Hans
Schwinn. In addition to Eileen & Katie, the other birders included Sam
Janazzo, Pat Jones and Jim Ash. I had not seen Jim in a few years, prior to
2 days previous at the same location...such is the draw of a special bird,
or two ! Speaking of things "special", it was a pleasure to have Paul
Buckley join our group.

The "Lifer", of course, was having a grandmother, babysitting such a young
"charge", on an active birding hunt ! While writing this last
sentence, another thought emerged...maybe I could lay claim to a 2nd
"Lifer" - that being for helping Eileen carry Katie and/in her
stroller across some deep, sandy terrain, between the parking lot and
boardwalk, and while carrying E's scope, as well !

Cheers,
Bob

RE: [nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern NO

2013-07-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
The westward flight of SB Dows and Least Sandpipers mentioned by Shane seemed
remarkably heavy to me. It was heaviest 4:45-5:45 pm, as the tide came up and
covered up feeding areas. Focusing on these during the peak of the movement and
counting by 10s, I estimated 660 SB Dows and 920 Least Sandpipers in transit,
in addition to ca. 200 of each on the ground. Also moving westward were 7
Lesser and 6 Greater Yellowlegs in transit. Birds were moving on a very broad
front, from the ocean dunes to well out in Moriches Bay, and it is likely that
many more passed unseen by us on the ocean side of the dunes.

The only additional notable bird I can add to Shane's summary was a
winter-plumaged Sandwich Tern that flew out to the ocean from Pike's Beach
around 4:00 pm.

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern NO

2013-07-08 Thread Shane Blodgett
Despite the efforts of 12+ birders, the Elegant Tern was not found this
afternoon/evening between 1:00-8:15 p.m.
Most of the manpower was concentrated on the Cupsogue flats but there was
additional coverage of Tiana/Pike's Beach, Triton Lane etc. by Hugh McGuinness,
John Gluth, Mike Shanley and Shai Mitra. Sean Sime and I left the flats around
6:45 and covered those areas again without success.
There were 2 Arctic Terns (1adult/1first-summer), 5-6 Black Terns and at least
7-8 Roseate Terns (and probably more like a dozen), and 3 Lesser Black-backed
Gulls on the flats. There was also a significant westward movement of
shorebirds, predominately Short-billed Dowitchers and Least Sandpipers but a
good number of Willet, Greater Yellowlegs and a few Semipalmated and
Black-bellied Plovers. We did not see the Red-necked Stint which I believe was
last seen on July 4th.
Sean found about 50-60 Black Scoters off of Tiana Beach and a couple of Surf
Scoters on the ocean at the end of Triton Lane and one unidentified shearwater.

Best regards,
Shane Blodgett

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern & Red-necked Stint - No

2013-07-08 Thread robert adamo
Today, between 1030 & 1400, I was on the flats at Cupsogue Co. Pk., being
one of the 5 birders mentioned by Shane Blodgett. The only birds of note
that I saw during those 3 & 1/2 hours were 6 Royal Terns, 2 Black Terns,
and finally getting to see the hybrid calidris sandpiper (dunlin x
white-rumped ).

This bird was pointed to me by Sean Camillieri, who had found it on the
marsh side of the channel, before he had crossed over to the flats, and
joined me. Even at that distance, the hybrid's size and plumage were
evident, but ~ 1/2 hour later the bird flew over to our side, and wound up
coming to ~ 30' of us...for some nice photos ! In past days, the hybrid was
reported to be in the company of 3, possibly 4, Dunlins, but when near us,
was feeding with ~ 8 small calidris.

Cheers,
Bob

re:[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern (RFI for Tues 7/9)

2013-07-08 Thread Andy Guthrie
My Dad, Rich Guthrie, will be heading to Long Island tomorrow and asked
that I post the following message. Anyone who will be in the area feel
free to reach out to him directly at gael...@capital.net.

Thanks,
Andy Guthrie
Hamlin, NY

Thanks for the update, Sean.

And, sorry to post to the whole group, but I'm planning to head down from
upstate (Albany area) tomorrow (Tuesday, July 9th) morning - early. It will
be my first chance to try since the Elegant Tern had been found.

I'd be interested in grouping up with anyone else who may be in the area
tomorrow to coordinate efforts (and to be sure I get the channel crossing
right, if necessary).

My plans are to leave home in time to arrive at Cupsogue by just before 8
AM.

Please contact me off-list if you will be around the area tomorrow. I will
share privately, any information received with others, if requested, unless
if asked by a provider not to do so.

Also, any updates later today would be appreciated - especially if a
predictable movement pattern that might aid in re-locating the bird is
evident. I'll have only one crack at this so I have to try to improve the
chances of success as best I can.

Thanks for all, All.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern (YES) @ Cupsogue LI... (7/7)

2013-07-07 Thread mcb3mb
Thank you to Andrew for posting the updated information about the Elegant Tern.My dad and I birded the Cupsogue flats on a rising tide this afternoon.  Just as we were about to leave around 5:45, we scanned the tern flock once more and realized that the Elegant Tern had appeared amidst the flock.  Fortunately, we were able to get out word to the birders that were staking out the sandbar at Tiana Beach, and some of them were able get to the flats at Cupsogue in time to see the Elegant.  As the tide continued to rise, the Elegant flew west towards Moriches Inlet, continuing out of sight.  Later in the evening, when we checked the Tiana Beach bar, the Elegant was not present. As Andrew noted, it would be optimal for birders planning to search for the bird in coming days to stay in contact when in the field.  The Cupsogue flats and the sandbar at Tiana Beach are both areas that should be covered, but gull/tern roosts along the outer beach as well as the shorelines of the bay islands at low tide are also good areas to check.  Any loafing tern flocks in these areas or elsewhere along Dune Road should be closely studied.  The Elegant Tern is intermediate in size between Royal and Common Terns.  However, from my observations at Tiana on July 6th, the Elegant seems to spend some time resting on its belly, at which point it may not stand out above the Common Terns.  Photos can be seen at:  https://picasaweb.google.com/117391989476777248424/NewYorkBirds2013In response to questions posed earlier today, the Red-necked Stint was not present at Cupsogue today although the hybrid Calidrid does continue.  A 1st Summer Arctic Tern was seen in the tern flock along with three Black Terns and several Roseates.  Many other interesting birds have been present along Dune Road over the past days: a female-type Black Scoter was hanging around the bay at Tiana as picked out by Hugh McGuinness, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron has been present here the past two evenings in the marshes, and a Northern Bobwhite was also calling from the dunes near the parking lot at Tiana today.Good luck to those trying for the Elegant. I would suggest that those of you trying for this bird tomorrow to get to

special permit to get into the parking lot during peak beach hours.

Good luck Y'all!
