RE: [nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

2011-11-30 Thread Will Raup

Why can't this bird survive the winter? After all Blackbirds as family as
quite hardy and likely this one is too given its tropical origins (or not, for
all we know the bird could have lived in Queens its entire life). It used to
be believed that Baltimore Orioles couldn't surive upstate, but they have been
proving that wrong, often setting themselves up at well stocked feeders. Just
a couple of years ago the Scotts Oriole survived the winter. As long as the
bird has a good food supply and a good roosting spot, I could certainly see
this bird surviving or at least having a good chance. I see no need to capture
the bird unless we really want to know its origins and I certainly don't
advocate capturing the bird to (re)sell.

I wish someone could find a way to catch this bird. It will never survive the
winter. Perhaps there is a rehabber or an experienced mist netter somewhere
nearby who could assist And perhaps, as an added incentive, these birds appear
to be quite valuable after a cursory search on the internet.

Thanks

2011-11-28 Thread Felipe Pimentel
Yes, this is a male Troupial and it seems to be an adult specimen. I have seen
both the male and the female Troupial in Puerto Rico. As John said, in some
South American countries the bird is kept in cages and possibly this specimen
is an escapee. This is a big rarity in this area.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Troupial at Roslyn NY...

Late this afternoon, I received a call from Erik Miller about a mystery
Oriole like looking bird that was found by Mary Normandia at Gerry Pond Park
in Roslyn NY. I got out to the area and took some documentation shots for
review. Erik later called and left a message indicating that he had
identified the bird as a Troupial (see the Birds of the West Indies) for
reference. I think Erik's ID is spot on. Here is a link to a few photos
 posted on my blog.
