[obc] OBC on topica.com
Greg Goodwin asks a number of reasonable questions. I'll give him my answers as I see them. Other Board members may see them differently, but first of all, since I've had private communications indicating a misunderstanding of David's message Anyone with web access anywhere in the world, subscriber or not, can read messages on this list now and in the future, the way I do, via http://www.topica.com/lists/obc/read There you will get all the messages in date sequence. This method circumvents the problem of unwanted and unsolicited e-mail. You can also scroll back and read older messages if you want to refresh your memory on previous postings in a thread. Unless you save all messages from this list, it is more efficient than the e-mail option. Subscribers who want to reduce their e-mail clutter can click on OPTIONS (at top right) and change the delivery preference to web - no e-mail or message digest. Now back to Greg's post, Greg Goodwin wrote: Has anyone identified the problem that this vote has been identified to fix? Yes they have identified problems. I personally have had members express their dismay over the misuse of this list. Some members of the Board don't even bother subscribing. I'm convinced we lose Board members and members over the offensive messages they read. The measure to be introduced will at least fix non-member abuse of the list. If the vote is to cut back on the personal attacks that have been appearing from non-members, am I safe to assume that the price of personal attacks is set at approx. $40/yr. Does membership in a club give you the right to make personal attacks on the listserv? No it doesn't, but fixing abuse by members is more difficult to administer. The list manager probably has other ways to bring influence to bare on members. Greg It would seem that is what is being implied here. Again, the problem has not been identified, so it's hard to understand what this solution is set to remedy. I would certainly vote to keep the list open, as I would hope that the club is trying to promote cycling in general and to provide a means for providing information. If I want to know which store in Ottawa carries a particular part, or who has had GPS on a bike experience, I really don't care if the person who provides the information is an OBC card carrying member. If someone posts information about the parkway being open or closed for the season, I don't care if they know how to spell OBC. If there is a post about a website up that a non obc member put up about their rideau lakes experience, do I care who really posted this information. Yes, membership does have it's privileges, but censorship wasn't in the last notice that I got with my OBC renewal. The suggestion that censorship is the objective here is inappropriate. By excluding someone from participation in a private conversation (we are a private club not a public resource) is not censorship. By determining who shall use a club resource is not censorship. I can write a letter to the newspaper, but I don't have a right to have it published. That's not censorship. Go to the site of another cycling group here in town and you will find they have an area for members only. They also screen, or at least used to screen, messages before distributing them to subscribers. The Internet is a relatively new medium and we are still learning how to make it a useful tool for communication. Discussion groups are great for exchange of information and knowledge. They are lousy for dealing with controversial issues. The current one for example started off on a low tone and got lower. Ours is frequently abused by those whose personal agendas could not be achieved by constitutional or democratic means, through an AGM or via the Board decision-making process. They then turn to attacks on the integrity of others. Some of these attacks have been blatantly libelous. No country that I know of exists with unlimited free speech. With rights come responsibilities. The Internet has spawned a new breed of discussion group wreckers who don't feel they have any responsibility for the consequences of what they say or where they say it. In response, a trend has emerged which appears to counter this phenomenon. It involves the setting up of discussion groups with restricted membership. I belong to a few and I have noticed how so much more civilized and useful the exchanges on such lists are. Now, a few questions come to mind here with regards to the original email. 1) Has there been an issue addressed with the integrity of the information being posted? Have people really been posting incorrect dates for the next Rideau Lakes to deter others from going. I would think that postings such as the date for the next Rideau Lakes, or the next Learn to Race clinic would be beneficial to a larger audience than just those who paid up this year. Or are we trying to hide that type of

[obc] Joe Danis Message
Joseph A Danis wrote: Could the Board please resolve the issue concerning the reporting of Time Trial results as soon as possible? Joe, I'm not sure which issue are you talking about. I assume you don't mean the link as that was addressed at the last Board meeting when the Board voted 8 to 2 against establishing a link. If you mean, as suggested below, to accept Celia's offer to provide this valuable service - not as a link to another site but as part of the OBC web site. I'm afraid Celia dealt with that one in January by resigning as webmaster which included removing herself from doing the TT pages. She stated in an e-mail message, . Oh - I guess I'll not be doing the TT pages either. It would be too much of a hassle to get them emailed to the new webmaster for posting. We have since been told that the Board had a reading comprehension problem and she didn't really mean that she had resigned or that she didn't really give up the TT work at the same time - maybe she was hoping that we would not accept the reignation but I think it's unreasonable to expect Board members to read something else into what was written. As a result of this, a new webmaster, Randy Plunkett, was appointed. Through all this he has kept a dignified silence even though he has put up with more insults, privately and here publicly, over his competence than anyone could ever reasonably expect a volunteer to accept. Celia has done an excellent job in reporting these results. My suggestion is that the Board accept her offer to provide this valuable service - not as a link to another site but as part of the OBC web site. I can't understand why the Board is refusing to accept the help of such a dedicated volunteer. I am beginning to wonder if the OBC is a Bike Club or Biker Club! Actually, the OBC is probably the best operated cycling club in Canada. Where else can cyclists get the comprehensive range of services our members get for $40? The low price is a direct result of it being competently managed by dedicated volunteers (with the sole exception of one paid administrative employee) who put in long hours for the benefit of their fellow members. If a couple of members want to disrupt the operations of the club (as they have) to pursue their own agenda, well it's up to the silent majority to express their confidence in how the Board operates the club. If not, well I don't know anyone on the Board that is wedded to his/her portfolio, or think it's an essential part of his/her life. They do it for the love and joy of cycling, and to give something back. I'm sure they would be quite happy to remove themselves and let the squeeky wheels take over custody of the oil can, so to speak. The squeeky wheels however will still have to conform to procedures and standards, and subject themselves to the decisions and authority of the Board. They'll be in the same position as we are. There's no getting around it. Avery Joseph A. Danis On Oct 7 , Knight, Ross [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: To the OBC Board Members. [obc] Anarchy, dictatorship, or good management
First of all my message was a personal reply to Jackie MacDonald. It was intended to be sent to her via the Topica e-mail facility. In error, it went to the OBC list instead. No matter, apart from the reference to my private site, it substantially repeated what had been said previously in the reply to Erika. I think Celia's latest post demonstrates why it has been in the best interests of the club for her and the Board to go their separate ways. She has had disputes and differences with the current newsletter editor, his predecessor, and other members of the Board on and off for over 12 months now. Differences of opinion are not unusual in a club with operations of the scale of the OBC and it's probably a good thing there are, but ultimately when disputes can't be resolved amicably through reasonable dialogue the Board and its delegates have to decide and implement what they feel is in the best interests of the club. The Board is not a dictatorship and I am offended that some folks who have never been to a Board meeting that I have attended in the six years I have been a Board member would even use the term. The Board operates democratically in accordance with its by-laws. (It won't be borrowing any operating rules from anarchists any time soon.) It takes member comments, suggestions and objections very seriously. In the current case, it has bent over backwards to resolve problems Celia has had with the newsletter editor, but she has been telling us for a long time that she can't work within rules and under the Board's authority. I indicated to her again in August in an e-mail message (copied to the Board) that there was still a role for her. I quote exactly from her reply of 20/08/02, 1. As a volunteer, I don't want a bunch of rules. 2. As a volunteer, I don't want a bunch of bossy directors ordering me around. 3. As a volunteer, I want to be free to enjoy what I produce - to give more than the minimum - to talk to my co-competitors and to add the sort of things that we want without having to get approval from some cumbersome bureaucracy. No responsible organization could possibly accommodate this response. The newsletter director, who like the rest of us is a volunteer, operates with the delegated authority of the Board. In respect of the club's web site, the authority to manage and control it has been vested in him. It's his responsibility to organize, integrate and disseminate the flow of information from electronic sources to printed sources to club members. That's why he calls the shots on the most overall effective way to manage the club's information and records. He makes the day to day decisions that are necessary to keep the communications with club members current. He does a pretty good job under trying and difficult circumstances. The Board at least recognizes that. At its last meeting, the Board reaffirmed its confidence in the newsletter editor by refusing to accept his offer to resign over the current issue. If only everyone were as honorable as Rod. RE: [obc] lack of time trial results on club website
.) on the official site. The only sites which currently have the correct material are http://www3.sympatico.ca/celia.mcinnis/tt/2002/ for the open series and http://www3.sympatico.ca/celia.mcinnis/wtt/2002/index.html for the Women's series. And the season is pretty much done by now... Also - the official link to last years results is WRONG. The correct link is http://www.geocities.com/ottawabicycleclub/ . Please ensure that this is corrected. I am asking this as the person who was the official time trial web keeper last year, and the year before, and the year before, ... You can't possibly have expected me to take your offer sent to me on Aug 19 2002 21:21 seriously! It was extremely insulting and showed absolutely no just consideration for one such as myself who had donated more than 1000 hours of time to the club over the last few years! Rod was certainly more pleasant, but equally non-negotiable. I NEVER categorically refused (in writing) to put TT results on the obc site - I merely stated to Rod (in writing) my current PREFERENCE for keeping them on my personal space and having the obcweb link to them. I gave good reasons for this preference, and in fact stated to Rod that if I found the board to be more reasonable in the near future than it had been in the previous half year, I could certainly change my preference. Most of us negotiate on the way to an agreement... Also, I NEVER resigned as TT webmaster - This was a job which I have enjoyed doing for the previous 5 seasons. The TT webmaster job was always independent of the obc webmaster job until I, as the TT webmaster, was asked to ALSO serve as the obc webmaster. In actual fact, I did NOT even resign as obc webmaster - There was a reading comprehension problem of the board members. (I FEEL that I have no choice but to (written in frustration with Rod's refusal to modify his web plans in the light of my well-grounded technical concerns and corrective input - and we can all see the problems which resulted on the current obcweb from this failure to deal with such concerns!) is many steps shy of an affirmation...). Sorry, but I just don't think that dictatorships work - and most especially not amongst volunteers! I'm an intelligent, hard-working, productive individual, a keen cyclist, and, yes, unofficially of course, an anarchist! Celia P.S.: As Bakunin said An Anarchist is one who neither oppresses nor will be oppressed. Avery Burdett wrote: Hi Jackie, Sorry I haven't replied sooner, although I did post a general message in reply to a similar plea by Erika Revesz. She does a superb job at getting out the results quickly and presenting them in a grand variety of formats. I would like to express my appreciation of the great contribution she is making. The time trials are an important part of the club program and the results should be available on or through the club website. Jackie MacDonald The results are on the OBC website at: http/www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb/open_tt.shtml Celia was asked to help us put the results on the OBC website but categorically refused (in writing). When Celia voluntarily resigned at the beginning of 2002, Rod Plunkett and his brother Randy had to build a new set of TT procedures and pages. This has been a work in progress and there are a lot more enhancements to come but it is now beginning to provide functions not available on the old system. RE: [obc] obc Sept.5 handicap TT Mystery
Hermann, I think you ought to take your personal beefs off-line. By making your thoughts private, you won't come across as another one whose ethic seems to be if-you-don't-do-it-my-way-I-won't-play. When the handicap calculation was devised, the fastest 60 plus ride was 23 minutes. Since then, as you well know, it has been brought down to around 22 minutes. Two years ago, one individual accused me of fixing the system so I could win. She was serious! Handicaps by definition are not fair. Ours is not fair to those between the age of 25 and 39. Anyway, it seems only right to occasionally make an adjustment based on most recent data. I'd like to add that I brought back this old event as a bit of fun for everyone. It's not the Olympics and Lance won't be there this year. The petty complaining leaves a sour taste. Frankly, there's a tiny minority posting here that have forgotten we belong to this club for the love of cycling, and that Board members give of their time because they want to give something back to the club which has served them so well. The slagging of Board members on this forum is getting a little tiresome, and making it very difficult to recruit able new Board members. No but there are some complex issues related to trail use and we would need to have some expertise and research done to take a position. Alan Anderson has been our unofficial guide on MTB issues and we leave it to him and others to suggest what positions to take but so far we haven't taken any. [obc] Champlain Bridge - Oh dear!
I've been known to express my distaste for cycling facilities. I view them as an attempt by the ill-informed to tell us where we should ride. Having created a monster on the east of the Portage Bridge, the NCC has now made a mess of the long awaited Champlain Bridge. Although this time the mess can be fixed. I don't have much to say about the white painted lines on the bridge other than that they appear to be the demarcation for gravel to accumulate. The lane will rapidly get tagged as puncture alley. Facilities specifically for cyclists are bound to confuse not only drivers and cyclists, who they are supposed to aid, but also the traffic engineers who design them. The south end of the bridge is a case in point. Travelling north towards Quebec, cyclists enter the bike lane after crossing the Parkway. It starts at the northern perimeter of the Ottawa River Parkway to the left of the triangular island which separates traffic from south from the traffic merging from the east. The bike lane continues for the length of the island - 10 to 15 metres - and ends at a box of painted hash lines. A right turn arrow on the pavement directs cyclists to make a right turn across the merging traffic from the east. That we should be so stupid! Travelling south is even more bizarre. The bike lane crosses the westbound exit to the Parkway and leads head on into a yellow and black chevron warning sign stuck on the island which divides the west bound traffic from the southbound traffic. Apparently cyclists are supposed to navigate around the warning sign and ride the 10 metres or so on the island to where a crosswalk would be (but isn't) at the Parkway. God knows where the inexperienced will go from there. BTW, the back up of traffic on Island Park Drive at 3.30pm today suggests that the new configuration has done nothing to alleviate congestion. When I crossed the bridge southbound I did not pass one vehicle in the HOV lane. Effectively it means millions of taxpayers dollars have been spent to provide an HOV lane that is hardly used. Watch for the HOV lane to be opened up to all vehicles soon as the failure becomes apparent. Meanwhile, sensible cyclists would be well advised to ignore the paint and follow the same lines of travel a car driver takes. RE: [obc] Hey Avery et al.
Les Humphreys (K) wrote: What accident statistics are there to justify this initiative - other than reducing the numbers of cyclists on the road, I wonder if there has been any reduction in the numbers of serious head injuries since helmet use has become mandatory. First of all, this is a private member's bill, so it doesn't need justification unless you count getting cheap publicity. The sponsor is offering no justification. Second there are no reliable data showing reductions in serious head injuries and fatalities following MHL (except by reducing cycling) or during any other period when helmet use among cyclists increased. The most widely quoted study (a clinical study not a population study) claimed an 85% reduction in head injuries but that figure has never been replicated among real populations. The study has been roundly criticized for poor design methodology demonstrated by the non-representative hospital sampling when compared to street surveys. Such weakness is an inherent problem with all clinical studies. Despite that the 85% is still widely used by those pushing MHL. An analysis of Transport Canada fatality data for cyclists and pedestrians over a 25 year period http://www.magma.ca/~ocbc/fatals.html shows virtually identical trends between the two groups. Both are vulnerable road users and both were exposed to the same environmental factors on the road such as drunk and wreckless driving reduction campaigns, and were subject to the same accident reporting procedures. There has been one principal difference between the two. Over the period, cyclist helmet use went from zero to over 50%. Pedestrian helmet rate of course stayed at zero. Having said that about fatalities and serious injuries, there is reason to conclude that helmets will help in reducing minor injuries such as lacerations and abrasions, but that would be true if pedestrians wore them too. I don't expect any of the above explanations will stop folks believing in the tooth fairy though. The reduction in cycling that has occurred in Australia, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, and it apppears also BC, following helmet legislation is a serious public health issue in those jurisdictions. Regular exercise, for example from cycling, reduces the risk of colon cancer and breast cancer by 30%, and heart disease by 50%. Add to those the benefits of cycling combined with diet modification to reduce obesity, and you attack the greatest cost by far of health care. Reduce cycling and you increase the burden on public health care systems. Regardless of the argument about the helmet effectiveness, this should be reason enough to close the book on this foolish bill. - For list help, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Website: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
RE: [obc] Hey Avery et al.
Before repeating quotes off the Internet, one should examine the underlying data. Clinical research is tainted by politics so one has to look at them with skeptical eye. This study suffers the same inherent methodological flaws as the 85% one previously mentioned. Back in 1998 and 1999, the Cambridge study generated the following comments both of which suggest self-selection of the sample: Dorre Robinson, a published Australian statistician The helmeted riders in the Cambridge study were different to the non helmeted riders. Children under 16 were twice as likely to wear helmets as older riders. Helmeted riders were more likely to have suffered bike only falls, compared with other types of accidents. Interestingly, one poster who lived in Cambridge at the time thought that helmet wearing was much lower than 11% - perhaps only 3 or 4% from his counts. If true, then the head injury rate would be little different from the helmet wearing rate. David Martin, British clinical scientist: What was not considered in this study is exposure to motor vehicles. Kids tend to have a far lower exposure than adults (especially in Cambridge as there is a very large student population who can generally be described as incompetent when it comes to traffic (and traffic in Cambridge is busy) who tend to not wear helmets. The modal share for commuting in Cambridge is something like 45% by bike. We contrast that to non commuting kids who have a much higher helmet wearing rate but don't hit cars so often as their exposure and pattern of riding is different. The significant thing here is the influence of a motor car on the rate of head injury. THe data needs to be better segregated to examine individual groups in order to get a better understanding of the injury pattern. ... end of quotes BTW, contemporaneously with the 1994 Cambridge study, UK road user fatalities owing to head injury were: motor vehicle users 41%, pedestrians 40%, and cyclists 8%. Now if helmets saved lives, which group should be forced to wear helmets first? Regarding the Leggrant study, Dorre described it as a disgrace although I don't have her critique of it. A quick look suggests it's a piece of fanciful nonsense. Needless to say it's on a helmet propaganda site and hasn't been peer reviewed.) Tom Trottier wrote: .. snip http://bmj.com/cgi/content/full/308/6943/1537?maxtoshow=HITS=10hits=10 RESULTFORMAT=titleabstract=helmet%2C+helmetssearchid=1027431923314_72 06stored_search=FIRSTINDEX=0resourcetype=1,2,3,4,10 Conclusion : The findings suggest an increased risk of sustaining head injury in a bicycle accident when a motor vehicle is involved and confirm protective effect of helmet wearing for any bicycle accident. This study also reviews the previous literature. Since all state helmet laws cover only children, this applies to children 16 under. http://www.helmets.org/leggrant.htm Section V. Conclusion. Bicycle helmet legislation is effective at achieving its desired goal: a reduction in bicycle accident fatalities for younger riders. Estimates of the effect of the legislation, using a large panel data set and a variety of regression approaches, robustly indicate that legislation requiring youths to wear bicycle helmets reduces juvenile fatalities by about 15%, without leading to an increase in juvenile pedestrian or motor vehicle fatalities as an offsetting effect. Currently, this would represent a savings of about twenty lives per year in states that do not currently have such legislation See other info at http://www.helmets.org/mandator.htm The question in my mind is not whether helmets, or helmet laws, save lives. They do. RE: [obc] WTB: Legal TT Helmet
Tom Trottier as usual is confused. Provincial mandatory helmet laws specify by regulation the standards to which helmets must conform. Most products sold as bicycle helmets in stores, including Canadian Tire, meet one those standards. Interestingly, Canada has a different standard for young children (= 5 years of age) from the US, so a child's helmet bought in the US may not be legal in Canadian provinces with child helmet laws. Most brands of (aerodynamic) helmet sold specifically for use in time trials - Limar, Giro, Catlike, Lazer, etc. do not meet standards laid down for helmet laws. The ads I have seen for these avoid calling them bicycle helmets and usually make it clear they are not for head protection. There's nothing to stop the sale of these in Canada as along as they do not claim to be anything they are not. A few brands of aero helmet meet one or more standard however. Louis Garneau makes one. The Canadian Cycling Association has helmet rules for sanctioned races. It requires the use of helmets that meet standards. Generally this rule is ignored for time trials where a blind eye is turned on riders wearing non-certified aero helmets. [obc] Reminder to non-member participants in OBC events
Club events are organized for the benefit of club members. The reason for allowing non-members to take part in our events is primarily to introduce them to the club as prospective members. After participating two or three times, prospective members should know whether they want to join the club or not. This year's affiliation agreement with the Ontario Cycling Association does not allow non-members to participate in more than three club events. We have been reminding non-members of this rule at regular events, particularly the Open Time Trials where quite a few non-members show up. A number of non-members have now participated in three time trial events. In order to take part in any other club event, TT or otherwise, they must now become club members. The individual membership fee is $43.00. This is a reminder that the three events rule will be enforced at Thursday's time trials. Another great RLCT courtesy of our hardworking army of volunteers. Sincere thanks to each and every one of you. BTW, I thought the cafeteria arrangement was vastly improved over previous years. With six self service stations, lines were kept to a minimum. On the other hand, I don't know if the animal rights activists or overzealous vegetarians have been lobbying the Queens U. catering people, but I was disappointed by the lack of protein from animal sources for Saturday's dinner. Us old folks need protein to repair broken and aching bodies. Tofu that tastes something similar to dried toothpaste just doesn't cut it. Anyone else feel the same? RE: [obc] Two Abreast and then HTA
Peter Tregunno wrote: Furthermore, Bankfield Road is a Regional Road - the City Bylaw (former RMOC bylaw) specifically allows two abreast riding. (Can you confirm this Avery or others?) Not exactly. The by-law required cyclists to ride in a single file. As a result of research and subsequent lobbying I did with the support of cycling groups including the OBC, it was rescinded back in 1994, so the by-laws are now silent on riding abreast as is the HTA. What is not prohibited is permitted. Some police officers improperly try to prohibit the practice with expanded interpretation of other sections of the law, as in Peter Scott's case. I understand police officers have a broad amount of discretion in placing charges, and it's surprising this one would bother to lay a charge in the City of Ottawa's jurisdiction even though he has the authority to do so. If the Crown has to appear in court to argue against a not guilty plea, teh officer has to convince the prosecutor to pursue the case. Based on the small amount of information we have been provided so far, I believe this case would likely get dropped before it got that far. So was the group being passed by another vehicle at the time the infraction was alleged to have happened? We need more detail from Peter Scott. I wonder if he is reading the thread. .. - For list help, please send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Web/mailing list: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb/Newsletter - ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
RE: [obc] Sunday morning ride maps?
Paul Lindsay wrote in reply to this comment: I realize that's it's not practical for the club to provide maps to everyone Sunday morning, but if they were available on-line, anyone who wanted one could print a copy. Well, not quite feasible. Recent postings have shown that some of us on Macs cannot access the OBC web site. Perhaps copies available at the club office would be more useful to the entire membership - including those who do not own computers. Paul L. The collection of route instructions and a set of maps can be purchased for $5 at the club office. The maps - there are about ten base maps - identify all the roads we ride on but not all roads in the region. If you wander off a route, the map may not be useful in getting back on. The OBC routes (about 50? different ones) are not marked or highlighted on our maps. That is something you would have to do yourself from the route instructions. The maps are proprietary to the OBC, so I'm not sure we want to make them available on-line - another privilege of membershp. Maybe we could sell electronic copies to members on a promise not to publish them without permission. Although I think some have handdrawn alterations. BTW, on behalf of the OBC, I participated in the preparation of the cycling map (Advermap) published by Ontario East Tourism Association. Many of our favourite Sunday ride routes are highlighted on it. The latter may be the better option. I could be wrong, but there may even be a few copies for sale at the office. The rain stayed away and we had a warm and slightly muggy evening. Peace at last and we took a few laps around the farm before time required some participants to be on their way. Some pics of the participants and their bikes can be viewed at: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291774273 Our next event will be held in a few weeks. Quite possibly it might just be a relaxed hour of spinning around the experimental farm or perhaps a leisurely loop of the Gatineau Park. Avery also had the good suggestion that perhaps one or two Sundays during the summer we could have a Vintage Group do the Sunday Billings ride. It would be a good chance to get out for a nice long ride on the old steeds... I'll keep folks posted. RE: [obc] First Ottawa Valley Vintage ride!
Get those old hairnets out. Will there be a prize for the most (un)-fashionable kit? Norman Sheil, Rick Moll, are you listening? After lots of humming and hawing, and no expressed concerns what so ever about a date, time and place I've decided that I'd best get this ball rolling before the summer is up (!). So with that introduction let me announce that the first Ottawa Valley Vintage Bike ride will take place on Wednesday May 29th and will be leaving Billings Bridge Plaza parking lot between 5:30 and 5:45 pm. For a social ~2 hour ride to points to be determined by the riders who decide to join us/me. When the next one will happen will also be determine by those that show up for this inaugural ride, but I'm hoping once every 2 or 3 weeks. Hopefully the weather will co-operate, in the case of rain or extreme likely hood of rain, watch for an email to reschedule the event. The idea is for folks to ride older (pre index shifting and aero brake levered, mid eighties is a nominal cut off) bikes that perhaps don't get out as often as they used to. Racing, touring, fixed gear, all breeds are welcome. All riders are welcome as well, especially those who enjoy beautiful old bikes. Please ensure that your bikes are in OK physical shape and up to the task, and as for the riders :-). RE: [obc] Sunday Ride May 19th
(This is a reconstruction of a message mailed yesterday which seems to have disappeared into Topica's black hole.) I have learned of the facts concerning the rider who suffered three flats and am convinced that he could not have foreseen the situation he found himself in. The failures were a result of very bad luck. He was riding in the middle of a pack and with only a late warning found himself running an ugly pothole. Both tires flatted. It wasn't his day - on the way back he hit a pebble and pinched another tube. He was riding a well-maintained bike, carried a spare tube, a CO2 cartridge and a patch kit. When he rejoined his group, the others were more than happy to let him pull most of the way back against the wind. Obviously, my earlier comments fall into the category of unfair speculation. Thanks are owed to Ross Knight and others for hanging around to assist. What happened in this case was an (untypical) example of the costs and benefits of group riding! Avery (p.s. in the category of FWIW, the Extra Sportif group I rode with arrived back without losing anyone. We were relieved that Paul Datars had decided to take a Sunday off :-)) Avery Burdett wrote: ... snip ... Re: [obc] Back in Ottawa, need fast group rides
Brian Young ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: Just got back to Ottawa after 7 years away, trying to find fast group rides in the area. Did the OBC 100K reliability ride with the first group last Sunday and it was the type of ride I am looking for. Unfortunately my fast bikes are in storage and I had to use my 30 pound department store bike I bought in 1973, man I got my 5 dollars worth on that ride!!! If not a member already, join the club and ride one of the Sportif groups on Sunday morning. If you want to compete, there are Tuesday evening crits at the NRC run by Ross Knight/Seenite Sports and our Thursday night Open Time Trials. Also some members race the Quebec vet series. There are lots of informal groups in the area out on training runs. On Tuesday nights there is an informal race in the Gatineau Park that leaves from the Gamelin parking lot around 6pm. BTW, did you finish with the first group last Sunday? :-) and what's a fast bike? RE: [obc] Wheel overlap
I've ridden alongside a few half-wheelers. (I must confess I might occasionally have half-wheeled myself. I'd never do that intentionally, of course :-)) I deal with half-wheelers by letting them go and then putting an arm across the path of following riders to indicate they shouldn't chase. The half-wheeling typically starts about a minute into the ride, usually on the uphill section of Riverside Drive, approx. 19 minutes before the rest of the pack has warmed up. To half-wheelers I say, wait 20 minutes before you start to race. Delay it at least until somewhere on Limebank Rd. If you don't, I suspect you will be collectively targeted to get dropped on the way back when the head winds peak at 40kmh and your lactic acid debt has to be repaid :-) Avery Paul Smeulders wrote: Just a quick comment on the short article Page 7 of the new Spokesperson: I'm referred to as having said I'll take Half-wheeling over wheel overlapping. In fact, I said the opposite, from my mail: What the diagram shows is wheel overlapping. I'll take wheel overlapping over half wheeling, any day. It takes steely resolve not to get caught up in the game. The remainder of the article seems to refer to the comment as I stated it, not as reproduced by the editor. I think it's just a typo. Further, yes, I fully agree with the editorial as it concludes from there. Preferring wheel overlap vs half-wheeling is in a context of ride-orderlieness and pacing at a nice group ride clip, rather than the constant acceleration that half-wheeling induces, and leads people toward riding too close to their limits. In terms of safety, overlapping of wheels IS more likely to result in an accident or injury. So I'm not advocating people should do it when it can be avoided. I only state given my druthers... Incidentally, when half-wheeling is occuring at the front, and following riders are regularly spaced behind, there is inherent wheel overlap with the rider in the line beside you. So, two good reasons not to half-wheel at the front. It's nasty, and it causes wheel overlap. I shall admit to doing the half-wheel thing purposely, once this year already, to make a repeat offender cease and desist, after he needlessly blew away two lead partners before me with the nasty habit. He stopped after that, I noticed. [obc] Wheels/Insurance
Aaron writes: snip The only way to know for sure if non-legal wheels would be ok for non-sanctioned events, is for someone to contact the company that provides insurance for the races in Canada, and ask them if a mishap occured with UCI non-legal wheels, if the injuries sustained from falling on a non-legal wheel would still be covered. snip We have received no directives from the OCA on this, so until we do it's business as usual for non-sanctioned activities. The following is my opinion and not that of the OBC or the OCA: The OCA insurance policy covers situations where individuals and organizations such as the OBC are held liable for damages, injury, etc. to a third party including cases of negligence. My understanding of such policies is that they are very broad in scope and exclusions are normally specified (last year's policy had a number of them). The UCI is saying that certain wheels have been tested to a standard (arguably arbitrary) and only those it has listed are permitted to be used at a certain level of organized racing. I don't think it has published a list of wheels it considers to be dangerous and of course there are many wheels it hasn't tested and probably never will. In the absence of the UCI, CCA or OCA designating specific wheels as dangerous, use of a non-approved wheel leading to injury or damages in a non-sanctioned activity is unlikely to invalidate the insurance policy. If you really think your wheels represent a danger to you or others, don't use them. This goes for other items such as ineffective brakes and loose parts dangling from your bike. I leave it to Bob to answer questions regarding the Grand Prix. Avery p.s. Watch for announcements on tighter risk management in accordance with OCA directives in future issues of the Spokesperson. RE: [obc] Amazing Experience
tim aubin quoted Peter James snip . A couple of weeks later we are at Calabogie eating breakfast, almost half the Humanathon complete. Jean Doiron asks who is planning on riding the Animalathon. This takes me off guard because I wasn't sure if I was up to it. Before I can swallow my coffee Tim chimes in - Sure - how about you Peter? So the decision is made. Well not all us have such pleasant memories of that ride. Prior to departure at Britannia Beach, I did a count of who was riding the Humanathon. I had no intention of abusing my body by riding a double century. (I declare here and now, I never will.) I also would not have left without a reasonable Humanathon team. So I proceeded in the belief I had a pack of about 7 to ride with for the whole journey. Prior to arriving at Calabogie for breakfast I went back to find a couple of folks who were off the back. I didn't find them. They had taken a wrong turn just as they entered Calabogie and got back on track after I had passed the wrong turn on my way out. That added about 15km to my distance. When I got to the restaurant riders were preparing to leave. I found out the Humanathon pack was now down to me and three others and none of the latter were what I would call strong riders. To further complicate matters, on the way back, one of them severed a gear cable. You don't have to guess who got stuck with pulling the whole 140km or so back to Ottawa in those strong winds that were blowing out of the east that day. I was less than impressed. -- Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (613) 230-1064 Web/mailing list: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb/Newsletter ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
[obc] Wheels
Since I pretzeled a Mavic Open Pro rim which I (road) race on, I too am starting to research current wheel technology for a replacement. I think there's a problem in trying to get a wheel that's optimized for both TT's (aerodynamic needs) and road racing (light weight if racing in the hills). If you plan to compete in sanctioned road races, you'll probably need two sets of wheels. Don't know whether Ross is going to impose any standards for Seenite crits. UCI claims a safety reason (excuse?) for the new regs. Since I have Zipps (deep rim - now illegal for UCI/OCA RR's) for TT's, I'm looking for a road only wheel. I'm not impressed by either the Rolf or Shimano wheel specs. From the data I saw last year in a review, the so-called semi-aero rim (in aluminum) adds weight to the wheel but provides little aero benefit (i.e. for TT's). Because of this I'll probably choose a traditional box rim, either another Mavic or something similar such as American Classic. Although I've only done preliminary research and I'd certainly like to hear the views of others regarding their experience. Avery Burdett Reid's original Post Situation: - I am looking to upgrade my wheels to something lighter and more aero - I am willing to spend a reasonable amount of money. = I want to use them for road racing, crits, time trials, and training wheels (don't have the time or energy to swap every day). Initially, I was thinking Rolf Vector Pro. Somebody suggested the Shimano #7701 (Dura Ace wheelset) as being comparable to the rolfs and cheaper. They also said the rolfs were no longer UCI legal for time trials (not even sure if this matters to me). Are there other comparable wheelsets that I should consider? I haven't spend a great deal of time looking, but I haven't found any good wheel comparisons on the internet that address my questions/concerns. Does anybody have any thoughts or advice on my particular situation? resisting being members? complaints about OBC? You are referring to the largest and most successful cycling club in Canada. Likely we offer the most diverse set of programs of any club in North America and possibly anywhere in the world. There's nothing that matches the Rideau Lakes Tour and the Grand Prix is the best race in Canada. We publish a fine newsletter. People vote with their wheels - participation is increasing (the reason I posted data on membership and RLCT registrations). We have hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers, and an active and vibrant Board of directors. We are financially healthy. We have a stable level of membership (1,000), the vast majority of them return year after year, indicating a pretty good level of satisfaction. When members feel the need to express their feelings about the way the club is steered, they show up in force at the general meeting of members. To the allegation people feeling unwelcome non-member Michael Slavitch makes, the facts suggest otherwise. Members of the Board go to great lengths to make people feel welcome at our events. Tour leaders and others are encouraged to act as club ambassadors in seeking out new members. Three or four years back we introduced an annual meet the directors night for new members. We also let prospective members participate in our events in the hope they will become fully paid up members. Some posters here just demonstrate a lack of awareness and don't seem to care just how much time our directors and volunteers put in to make cycling an enjoyable experience for our members and prospective members. Even though we are continually reviewing and finetuning our programs during our annual planning session and at monthly Board meetings based on feedback we get, I acknowledge it is impossible to be all things to all people, specially tho ones that would impose a different agenda to that which the club has been delivering for last 30 or so years. But those that don't find what they want in the OBC may find a niche in the Kanata/Nepean Club (or is it Nepean/Kanata?), Citizens for Safe Cycling, or a club of their own. (How about the O-Transpo Passengers Cycling Club?) This mailing list is operated by the OBC for club members. It's a means for the club and its members to exchange information. While we do not prohibit outsiders from posting to it, we expect guests to our facility to do so in a courteous and respectful manner (just as we expect our own members to). Guests have the same freedom of access to our list as OBC members. They are not however accorded the same privileges as are granted to club members who, after all, pay the bills to operate the club. The OBC is a private club not a public resource. As they say, he who pays the piper calls the tune In my opinion, it shows a lack of respect to our members if a person posts with suggestions on what the OBC should and shouldn't do without identifying his or herself, and/or without acknowledging he or she is not a member. The tone of the replies from non-members to my request suggests the reminder above is necessary. [obc] Members dropped?
James D. Wilson ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: Hi ! Sunday April 07 Th. OBC Tour Cyclist. A few observed points on Sundays ride. snip 4. Passed three groups of OBC riders, Going by members, first a slower group. Must have gone only to Manotick. Then a group with Avery in it. Must have gone to Osgoode. Then another slower group. Which must have gone to Kars or Osgoode. Each group had one member that had been dropped and was way back from the group ahead of them. I'm not sure whether the last sentence is intended as an observation or something which needs to be dealt with, perhaps Jim would clarify. Regardless, I'm not sure that every rider riding behind an OBC group has been dropped. If I know someone is falling off the back of my groups (and occasionally I don't know as no one has alerted me) I will try to get them back on either by falling back myself or asking another pack rider to drop back while the pack temporarily slows down. I must confess, I've chewed out more than one half-wheeler who is not sensitive to what's going on behind him in the pack. More often than not however a rider has decided to drop off for his or her own reasons. In these cases, riders should make an effort to advise their group leaders. If someone is struggling and about to be dropped, then those pack members cycling near the individual should immediately notify the group leader, so he can take necessary action. Regarding sportif groups, as Bruce Lowe has implied, they are out on what are basically training runs, and folks join these at their own risk, so to speak. It's not unusual for an ego to exceed ability with someone pushing the pace too early. If he burns out and subsequently gets dropped, he'll likely be the object of some amusement when the group gets back to McDonald's ahead of him. RE: [obc] Aching neck
The starting point is to get the geometry of another bike set up to be as close as possible to the comfortable position on the old bike. The contact points - feet on pedals, hands on top of the drop handle bars and butt on saddle should be about the same relatively as before. (I'm assuming here that her current position is basically sound with the correct saddle height. If not search the web for advice on bike/rider fit.) You should be able to adjust handlebars so that the upper is at least level with saddle. From what you have said, you can't do this so the road bike is probably too small. When ready to assume a more aerodynamic position for racing, the handlebars can be lowered, say a half inch at a time, progressively over the season as the body adapts to slightly changed positions. It takes time. Competitive riders often start the season with a more relaxed handle bar height and drop them lower progressively ending up in a pretty radical position for racing. If acquiring a larger bike, go to any of the retail shops listed in the OBC newsletter and ask that your daughter be measured and fitted. Cyclo Bertrand, Peccos, and others have the expertise to do it this. If the helmet is affecting her line of sight, it is either improperly adjusted or too big for her. Hedley, Phil wrote: My 15 year old daughter has taken up an interest in road cycling (not racing) and I bought a second hand touring/racing style bike to see how she gets on. In the past she has always ridden mountain bikes and now she feels uncomfortable when riding the bike I bought. The main problem seems to be that she feels as though her shoulders are hunched and she gets a neck ache. The helmet she wears makes things worse since she has to hold up her head further to avoid seeing the rim of the helmet. I know from personal experience that I've had neck ache on both road and mountain bike and I've thought that it is part of cycling and you just live with it. Now I'm not too sure. On my daughter's bike I've adjusted the seat height to what she feels comfortable with, it's also in the forward position so that the reach to the handlebars is as short as possible. I've also lifted up the handlebars to compensate for the seat height. However, at the moment the height of the seat and handlebars are at the maximum, but the handlebars are lower than the seat which may be the reason for the neck ache. I'm starting to wonder if I should exchange the bike for a bigger frame, whereby the seat and handlebar height can be set so that the handlebars are not so low, but with a bigger frame would the reach from seat to handlebar be increased resulting in the same problem of neck ache? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Eight of us yesterday took in the sun and calm winds, as well as hot coffee and bagels at the diner in Navan. Will this year's Sunday ride program make it non-stop to Christmas or even to 2002? [obc] President's Award to Sir James
I'm pleased to announce that the winner of the President's Award for 2001 is Sir James (Wilson). The award is made in recognition of James' outstanding service to the club in organizing and leading Tuesday night rides, Montreal tours, Sunday rides, and in performing other volunteer work. Maybe not so well known to club members has been James' efforts to first save and then pump new life into the Canadian Kilometres Achievement Program (C-KAP). The latter almost died with the near demise of the Ontario Cycling Association a couple of years ago. Recent past winners of the award are Serge Boudreau and Suzan Bouchard, Bram Moerman, Greg Franks, and Don Moxley. James will be honoured on December 1st at this year's Annual Awards Banquet. [obc] OBC Honours Member
On Monday at its November meeting, the Board voted to award an honorary lifetime membership to Ken Smith. The award is made to recognize Ken's contribution to the club and Canadian cycling. During the 1970 reforming of the Ottawa Bicycle Club, Ken was a virtual founder. He attended early meetings of the official founders to provide moral and material support, advice, and guidance. At the time, being Executive Director of the Canadian Cycling Association, he felt he would be in a conflict of interest if he served both organizations, otherwise he surely would have been an official OBC founder. In 1971 he rode the first Rideau Lakes tour, and signed the tour certificates on behalf of the CCA. He has been a regular participant in club events as a rider and a volunteer ever since. From 1961 to 1969, Ken was Chairman of the Ontario Racing Board, a forerunner of the Ontario Cycling Association. From 1970 to 1976, he was Executive Director of the CCA and editor of the Canadian Cyclist, the CCA's newsletter. In this period, he organized the 1972 National Road championships in Ottawa, and was instrumental in bringing the 1974 World Road and Track championships to Montreal - the first time the Worlds had been held in Canada for 75 years. Ken will be guest of honour at the Annual Awards Banquet December 1st. He joins current lifetime members, Peter Tyler, Alan Large, Brian Parkin, Bob Oades and Mike McCall. Congratulations Ken, and thanks for all you have done for Canadian Cycling. A damsel in distress, I thoughtwhat would the intrepid Sir James do in this situation? She needed directions and said her cell phone was not working. I allowed her to use mine but she didn't get an answer. After chatting, I discovered that she had gotten Carters Corners mixed up with Stanleys Corners. I explained how to get to her destination and she thanked me for my help. I declared my work is done here and departed on my bike into the sunset. A few dozen feet down the road, I heard the neighing of a horse. I thought, geez, perhaps I'm letting this escapism thing get out of hand. I looked up to see two horses staring at me as I passed. [obc] The OBC Mailing List
for a second time this year, The mailing list is for the benefit of Club members. The mailing list guidelines were drawn up with members in mind even though non-members may subscribe. The authors never anticipated that the list would be used by other organizations, individuals, or non-members for purposes other than the OBC's. Re: [obc] CAN-BIKE instructor certification process
Thank you Jennifer for this. You have confirmed my understanding of the different levels of certification. The comment I originally made was in the context of a discussion on the apparent proposition that Can-Bike is the *only* means to deliver high quality cycling education. To reiterate my point, Can-Bike is not perfect. (That's not the same as saying that it's no good. I have been a believer for a long time.) By most reasonable measures, the requirements of certification defined below for Can-Bike II instructors satisfy the definition of a qualified instructor. The same cannot be said for CB I instructors. A comparison should be made with the requirements to become a coach in Ontario. *** A candidate must spend 28 hours in the classroom (14 hours theory plus 14 hours technical) and must gain one year of practical experience with a club. Only then does one become a CCA certified coach, and that's only at the basic level (level 1). A candidate has four more levels to reach the top level (level 5). He or she needs two more years of study and at least two more years of practical experience to get just to level 3. Thus a problem remains. Not all those called Can-Bike Instructors are created equal. Let us not ignore the fact that to a limited degree, the lives of children are being placed in the hands of these instructors so any move to tighten up requirements would be a positive step and gain more credibility for the children's program. (It's important there is no misunderstanding here. This is an issue about the use of the designation Can-Bike Instructor and the stringency of CB I certification. It is not a comment about the competence of CB I instructors. I acknowledge there are many very capable CB I instructors. I also add that the CB II instructors whom I know, and that's quite a few, are all what I would call experts in their field.) *** The OBC has a number of coaches. the ones I know of are level 3: Jim Glover; level 2: Don Moxley, Bob Simpson, and Ross Knight; level 1: (I believe) Paul Smeulders. Racing Director, Norman Sheil, former world champion on the track, has been a national team coach for both Canada and Great Britain. There may be others. Aplogies to anyone I missed. Jennifer Allen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: Hi everybody, I would like to clarify something that I read on your newsgroup this week that refers to CAN-BIKE instructors. Taking the 18-hour CAN-BIKE II course is only the first step in the instructor training process. To teach CAN-BIKE I and Kids CAN-BIKE, the potential instructor must take an 8 hour instructor workshop specific to the course they will teach. According to the OCA the instructor courses at this level are 'recommended' but not required. At CfSC we have chosen to conduct the instructor courses. After the instructor course, the instructor candidate must 'shadow teach' the course (e.g., KCB) with a fully certified instructor, to the satisfaction of the supervising instructor. Only then can this person teach on their own. In order to teach CB II, the student must take CB II and pass with high marks. If the student acheives the required marks in all areas- classroom, on-road and skills testing, they are eligible to become CB II instructors. They then *must* continue with the following training: take a 2 day instructor workshop, shadow teach a complete, 18-hour CB II course with a certified instructor, who must provide a written evaluation of the potential instructor. Then there is a written exam (passing grade 70%), and candidates must ensure they have up to date first aid and CPR training. All instructors must join the OCA for insurance purposes. It is a bit of a process to become certified, yes, but this high level of training should not be compromised. This information has been taken from the most recently updated (1999) CAN-BIKE Instructor's Manual, endorsed by the OCA and CCA. ... snip -- Avery Burdett Ottawa, Ontario -- To unsubscribe, send a blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Club Office: [EMAIL PROTECTED], (613) 230-1064 Web/mailing list: [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb Newsletter: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cyberus.ca/~obcweb/Newsletter ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] A HREF= http://topica.com/u/?aVxiDo.a2i8p1 AOL users click here./A T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^

RE: [obc] XX-Rated and IEEE?
Simpson, Bob ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: I fear that lawyers and good debaters or negotiators will have an advantage here, so they must be negatively handicapped to start with. Those who are meek and non-confrontational should receive a several second handicap. I would like to put forth conclusively that I am of the meek variety and if you don't agree with that I will sue for those seconds and minutes. Bob, At the moment the waiver doesn't cover for such errors and ommission, so I'd appreciate it if you would allow us a year or two to have it modified. This will of course require us to go the the OCA to ensure it complies with its sanctioning rules. The OCA will need time to go to the CCA who will review the general liability insurance policy as I'm sure they never anticipated the possiblity of being sued over a handicapping system. (They did cover the second coming of Christ though, just in case he shows up on a Thursday night.) The CCA must consult not only with the UCI who will want to know if the TT adds seconds to paticipants riding on non-diamond shaped frames or who have high red blood cell counts, but also the insurance broker, who in turn will communicate with the insurance underwriter. The latter will be forced to compile new actuarial tables. The underwriter is affiliated with Lloyds of London. Now as you know, Lloyds of London is not a corporation but a collection of Englsih old boys known as names or some such archaic term from Shakespeare's time. They too will have to consult each other from the depths of the Empire and take a vote. God knows what they do if there's a tie. Any changes filtering back through the layers (or is that lawyers?) will then have to go back to the OBC Board, then to the annual meeting of members followed by two pages of explanations in the Spokesperson. If everything goes smoothly, none of the members of the Board will suffer public execution. I have questions too. 1. Do members of the Board get any seconds for dealing with this? 2. Do I get extra for being forced to wear a helmet? RE: [obc] Sidewalk Cycling
John Forester (Effective Cycling) believes virtually any grade 3 child can be taught, absorb and perform the following three fundamental concepts: 1. Ride on the right-hand side of the roadway, not on the left and not on the sidewalk. 2. How to yield to crossing traffic when reaching a superior roadway. 3. How to yield to overtaking traffic when moving laterally. Each child has his or her own individual cognitive and physical abilities, so knowledgeable cycling parents could start vehicular cycling instruction to their kids as early as five years of age on quiet residential streets. I did with my two sons - soon after they could balance on a two wheeler. It is not unreasonable for kids to be riding alone on residential streets near home with about a year's worth of supervised practice. Contemporaneously, they should be introduced to Forester's next two concepts: 4. Destination positioning at intersections. (i.e. getting to the proper place in preparation for a turn) 5. Speed positioning between intersections (e.g. passing a slower cyclist) Within a year or so they can be introduced (under supervision) to four lane roads, higher traffic densities and more complex traffic patterns. Forester source: http://www.johnforester.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Avery, I couldn't agree more that young children need to be supervised. For us parents, I was wondering at what developmental stages would you introduce the various aspects of vehicular cycling? As you say, vehicular road cycling starts the day they start to ride. Mom on a Bike Avery Burdett wrote: The children I refer to are ones that need adult supervision no matter where they ride. Children (under supervision of course) should be introduced to vehicular road cycling from the day they start to ride. -Original Message- From:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent:Wednesday, September 05, 2001 9:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [obc] Lowell Green on CFRA There are many competent cyclist out there who may or may not belong to the many great cycling clubs and organizations this whole region has to offer. Re: [obc] Lowell Green on CFRA
I agree with Michael's sentiments. It's unfortunate that all cyclists or all motorists get painted with the same broad brush. In that respect, anti-cycling types like Lowell Greene (who, and let's acknowledge this, is in the entertainment business and gets his ratings up by making outrageous statements) and the anti-car activists (who pop up here now and again) have much in common. It is skilled driving and courteous behaviour that should be respected, not the class of driver. Whether the vehicle being operated is a car or a bicycle is irrelevant. From what I observe daily on the streets of Ottawa, most cyclist ills are of the cyclists own making. Skilled cyclists have fewer problems with poor drivers and when potential problems arise with such drivers, they are handled better. It confirms the validity of the club's 30 year tradition of focussing on skills development as the principal means to improve safety and enjoyment of cycling on our roads. Michael Slavitch ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: In fairness my comments are anti-elitist. Most OBC riders live in a bubble regarding what constitutes a cyclist. In reality once you get out of this circle most cyclists are like most drivers: uneducated, stubborn, and wrong. And no amount of education will get through to 'em, education doesn't work if people have no intent to learn. In such a case the only measure is enforcement. My commute is down Prince of Wales, with a bike lane that has nice little bicycles with ARROWS pointing them along the way. But at least half of all cyclists, adult cyclists (I'm assuming they're commuters) on this road go against the flow of traffic, some of them yelling and screaming that I'm going the wrong way. These same cyclists get annoyed when I stop at a red light (imagine that) or a stop sign. Don't ask how they handle the traffic circle. If a big sign with an arrow pointing the way isn't enough, I don't know what is. Given that, look at what these drivers see. The worst case example. Just like what we see with drivers. Good cyclists blend into the woodwork, we're just traffic. As do good drivers. How many of us have swapped stories about that driver that gave us lots of room? Nope. We remember the yabbo that tried to run us of the road. A lot of us tar drivers with the same Lowell Green brush. Depending on where you live (this goes for both cyclists and drivers) what you see has impact. If where you drive or ride there are a lot of yahoo cyclists or drivers you remember that. So when some Car Guy(TM) goes on about cyclists being a danger say: Yes, you're right, a lot are. Same goes for drivers. I have no problem having bad cyclists charged and even taken off the road, if the same was true for drivers. Both need to learn, do you agree with me? Re: [obc] Virus Alert from Sir James
This is a very nasty virus. It gets into e-mail system and resends the file as an attachment to address book entries while the user is connected to an ISP server. It appears it come from someone you know so is very dangerous. It spawns itself once opened in the way it got to the recipient. I've probably received it about 20 times from various sources. It infects accounts that handle attached files. It doesn't work on my freenet account. As a rule, I never open unsolicited attached files anyway, so have avoided infection of my other account, but systems of other OBCers have been infected. I take it that this is a virus which has been around for some time. The message with the attached file starts off: Hi! Re: [obc] sad news
Thank you for posting this. Ross Knight had let us know last night. The Frasers were not members of the club in recent years but maintained a vital interest regardless. (I heard they read and enjoyed our newsletter on a regular basis.) In the past Ian and Joan had been strong supporters of club activities, cyclocross, races, etc. and made their home a meeting place for many local and out-of-town riders. I know that Ian will be missed by many and our hearts go out to Joan, Gord and the rest of the Fraser family. Re: [obc] sad news
Courtesy Ross D. Knight Ian Fraser Passes Away Sadly, on August 16th the cycling community lost a supporter, past volunteer, and official. Ian Fraser, father of professional cyclist Gord Fraser, died suddenly while sleeping. Ian was in excellent health. This loss is a shock to the local Ottawa community and, I am sure, to all of the athletes that have passed through the Fraser's house, or who have had the joy of conversation at cycling, skiing, running, triathlon, and numerous other sports events over the past several decades. Ian's presence will be missed. We wish the family well and hope they find some comfort in knowing just how much Ian contributed to the lives of so many people.
