RE: [obc] New rules for OBC mailing list

2002-10-24 Thread Simpson, Bob

Looking at the replies to this touchy issue, I note that many non-club
members read this list from far away and near and find the information
valuable. Some of them seem to think that the irritation that is generated
and aired here is from the board members or indeed simple club members, yet
it's often (but not always) non-club or anonymous members of this list who
are doing much of the mud slinging. In short, the list seems to represent
the club, yet non club members of the list have aired opinions and
suggestions which have led to tedious arguments.

While I'm happy to stem the acrimony that erupts here from time to time, I
propose that, instead of shutting out all but club members, a person or
committee be empowered to warn, then ban users who don't follow the spirit
of the list. If that's not practical or possible then I agree that the only
way to control the airing of what amounts to personality conflicts is to
have a members-only list where posters are subject to club sanctions.

RE: [obc] Cycling Accident

2002-09-19 Thread Simpson, Bob

Sunset was at around 7:12 PM on Tuesday (7:08 today, Thursday) and the
criterium must run until 7 or 7:30 PM. Regarding these recent accidents,
whether a rider is wrong or right doesn't matter much to you when you die or
are seriously injured. I assume that on a bike I am invisible, yet totally
vulnerable at all times. I never pass a moving vehicle on the right or stop
beside a long vehicle at a corner because I assume that they will turn right
whether they signal or not. When people cut me off or don't see me, I know
that it's hard for motorists to see us and I'll mention in as friendly a
manner as possible that they should watch for cyclists, because getting
hostile is counter-productive.

I hope that all of us cyclists will ride with care while rightfully staking
their claim to use of the roads.

I've got to ask: If the accident was after the crit, what time was it? One
of the reasons I've driven to the crits is because I just don't want to
chance getting hit in the dusk/dark while riding home. Lights or not many
drivers find us invisible as the darkness settles. Did Phil have lights on?

Hopes and prayers for a full recover.

RE: [obc] Wheel balancing?

2002-07-31 Thread Simpson, Bob

First thing to do is spin the wheel freely and see if it varies from
perfectly round and straight by more than 2 mm. If so, it needs to be
trued. The best thing to do would be to go to your local favourite bike
shop for that. Bike wheels are so light that balancing isn't necessary.

There are other things that can create a vibration - especially on an indoor
trainer. If the tires are lower quality, under-inflated or worn, or if the
chain and sprockets are worn you might feel vibration, but the wheel
trueness is the most likely culprit.

If the vibration is very high frequency (higher than the turning frequency
of the wheel which is about 2 to 3 times per second at 20 KPH) then the
culprit may be the trainer which has the roller that turns about 50 to 70
times faster.

For some time now, I have been biking using a road bike (Specialized Epic)
both outdoors and indoors. When indoors, I clamp my bike to a mag-trainer
and just pedal for 30-40 minutes ... it's quite a workout.

When I bike on the mag-trainer there is a very mild numbing vibration. I
thought initially that it was because I had removed the reflectors on the
wheels ... so I put them back on locating them opposite the valve, but the
vibration is still there.

Can anyone suggest a possible solution? . Is there such thing as wheel
balancing for bicycles?

Thanks ... John

[obc] FW: Youth bike racing

2002-07-08 Thread Simpson, Bob

Lynda Kadey-Smith brought this website to my attention, aimed at encouraging
youth bike racing. I was wondering if there is much interest in this kind
of thing? Events could include time trials, obstacle races, slow races,
coasting contests, etc.

I know that we've had some kids as young as 12 years old attend the Learn to
Race clinics and it could be a lot of fun. This is the kind of thing that a
local track would be perfect for.

I came upon a website that encourages youth to get involved with bike
racing. I think I remember reading something about encouraging youth
in cycling somewhere in the Spokesperson as part of OBC's mandate. I
thought this might be of interest.

They seem quite successful. If you are interested or know someone who
is this is the website: http://www.mcf.net/ycl/

[obc] For sale - bike baby trailer

RE: [obc] Back in Ottawa, need fast group rides

2002-05-10 Thread Simpson, Bob

Brian,

I think that I know what you're looking for in a group ride and the only
organized OBC club ride that is fast (race-like) is the Sportif and Extra
Sportif rides, Sunday morning. The Extra Sportif ride is just a half a
notch slower than the Reliability ride. The racers don't very often gather
for big group rides for some reason, other than the Tuesday night A
criterium (44 KPH average on a tight 4 corner circuit) and the alternate
Tuesday Gatineau Park ride. If you ask at Peccos, Full Tilt and Sportable,
you might find some other fast groups going out.

Thee is a group of OBC Vets that go to Montreal area races. The Quebec Vets
are excellent racers. The races are fast and animated.

RE: [obc] Cards on the table.

2002-05-07 Thread Simpson, Bob

By all means, don't go away, if that's literally what you mean. While I
don't like to think of the issues that you brought up as us against them,
to get so frustrated that you throw your arms up is hopefully not an
alternative to discussion.

Regarding the issues that you brought up

On harassing comments. All of us as cyclists have had our share of
harassment in terms of motorists bullying the smaller, more vulnerable
cyclist, so I think that most of us can imagine the issues that women face
regarding unwanted comments. My personal feeling on this is that a bully
tries to find weak, uncomplaining victims to pick on and will say or do
anything to annoy them. Mostly, their aim is to upset and if one reacts
just the way that they hope, that encourages them. Any time that I get
harassed, I, like you, wave in a friendly manner, as if this has been a
friend saying hello. To those who are malicious, it ruins their fun and to
those who are annoyed with me, they realize that I'm not trying to be nasty
by blocking their way or what ever it is that annoys them. Malicious intent
to harass is punishable, thankfully, and should be reported to police by
noting their license plate number, but of course someone saying wow, baby
knows that they won't get charged for such a comment. Bullies know just how
far they can push until they get stood up to. Even if police visit that
person's house to discuss the incident, they'll be discouraged from doing
it again

On Avery's skinny broad comment, I take that with a grain of salt, as if a
friend were describing me as a fat-assed, washed up old-timer. Seeing it
written rather than said, you just don't know how it was intended and I'd
not want to judge it. Wasn't that aimed at someone who used fat broad as
her nickname?

On eating disorders, while this is a real problem, our recreational club
isn't the forum for that issue. While I'm interested to hear points of view
on that particular topic here, I don't think that you can expect the board
of directors to address it, unless it's demonstrated to be a real problem.
In many years of coaching, I can't recall any female cyclists who obviously
showed that type of behaviour, but that doesn't mean that it's not a hidden
problem with some individuals. But because of these issues being brought
up, I'm very careful to watch for eating disorders. Bicycle racing is
unusual in that strength and speed are very important. Our weight is
supported on our saddles and not our feet, like in running, so weight is
less of an issue, unless you are climbing very big mountains. It's not
unreasonable to aim to get lighter for any competitor though, as long as it
doesn't develop into a disorder.

I'm sure you've heard all these arguments before and I understand that
frustration can get the better of anyone. We must all be careful that we
don't succumb to any obsessive behaviour including feelings that everyone
against you, as I confess I do occasionally when I'm being pushed off the
road by motorists several times in a day, while riding.

[obc] Learn to Race 2002

2002-03-27 Thread Simpson, Bob

The first Learn to Race clinic of 2002 will be held May 11, Saturday. This
is a 5 hour clinic costing $25 and starts at 10 AM. For details and to
contact me so I know how many are coming, e-mail me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or phone at 225 8649.

This is a course designed to help anyone who wants to be more comfortable
riding in any level of group. We cover all the basics of safe riding with
just a bit of race skills thrown in to make it interesting. Those who want
to go on to race will find this required knowledge. We've had people of
all ability levels and ages (15 to 60). We try to separate the wannabe
racers from the touring riders.

I will try to get to the early season NRC criteriums for anyone wanting help
to start racing those. Contact me so we can meet before the criteriums,
which are on Tuesdays starting late April.

RE: Re: [obc] Why looking for new TT course, really?

2002-03-25 Thread Simpson, Bob

The story goes that Moscow had a velodrome that had ventilation ducts which,
as is usual, could blow air in two directions to be evenly distributed.
During record attempts, one side of the ducts was covered somehow so that
the air was blown around counterclockwise, the same way as the track is
ridden, so that the riders would have a favourable wind. (Air speed isn't
measured when there's an oval.) It's the same effect when you have a steady
stream of truck, vans, buses or friends in cars passing you along the
parkway. You don't have to draft right up behind them to get a benefit.

Yes, drafting is illegal but there are those who will do it whether or not
it is illegal -- the real question is it wise to do so?

The question I used to ask my husband rather than harangue him about
drafting off of trucks was, is the life insurance paid up and is it in my
name?

He doesn't do it anymore.

Having said that, the fastest TT courses in the UK are on very busy
roads - a steady stream of gravel trucks for an hour in the evening
   might improve our PB's!

Really, Peter, it's only cool to draft Cinzano trucks :-)

Well each to his own - I just don't see too many Cinzano trucks at the

Of course I didn't say anything about drafting - that would be
illegal the UK experience as I understand it is that on a busy road
the air in the immediate vicinity of the traffic is actually moving with
the traffic, so it's a kind of virtual drafting.

RE: [obc] Racing Question

2002-02-25 Thread Simpson, Bob
Title: RE: [obc] Racing Question

That's an interesting question that I don't have hard statistics for, but I'd have to guess that France and Italy have the highest numbers, with the US close behind, although in terms of percent of the population, Belgium and Holland would have to be far ahead of anyone. Does anyone know if I've left out any country?

You might do some research on the web to find numbers of the racers in various racing associations. The UCI site http://www.uci.ch/english/index.htm has the names of other countries' federations at http://www.uci.ch/english/about/nat_feds/index.htm but oddly not the links, but a search will probably find their websites.

Title: RE: [obc] rare bird siting - pushing spring

There must be some idiot around responsible for these sightings. A few weeks ago I was riding home west on Heron at Bank and I saw a guy in -5 degree weather with shorts on. I think this must be a mental health case and I feel sorry for his or her knees knowing the abuse this person's inflicting on them. Circulation is sometimes good enough to the leg muscles to keep warm for a little while in cold weather, but the circulation around the knee is very poor.

After reading comments on observations of persons in summer attire at this
time of the year, I may have spotted the prize winner this morning.

At 08:30 this morning I spotted a rider on a mountain bike heading West on
Albert Street near Lebreton Flats - bare headed, bare hands, short sleeve
white cotton T-shirt, cotton shorts, wool socks and hiking boots. Checked
the thermometer when I arrived home a few minutes latter and it was reading
-14 C.

Can anyone beat that?

RE: [obc] Home/Tenants Insurance with no limits on Bicycles?

2002-01-10 Thread Simpson, Bob

Paul, that sounds like my policy too. I guess that by market in stolen
bicycles they also mean that people wanting to get a new free $5k bike will
arrange for their bikes to be in an area that gets burned along with a shed

accusatory.

My understanding is it is getting more and more rare.

Dumb story: I asked about why the new riders for bikes. The response was
there is quite a black market in stolen bikes. My reply was So say my
place burns down, and the bikes are ruined, would they be covered for
replacement value, even if I don't have the special bicycle riders?

One company said no, same $1000 limit
why is that, they weren't stolen, they were burned.
It's because there is quite a market in stolen bikes

puzzled pause was inserted intentionally, by me, into the conversation,
followed by:

And so, I guess, also in burned bikes too?

They lost my business to the company who said the don't cover for stolen

However, despite my requests, nobody has written it down.

Anyway, let's hear about them good policies.

RE: [obc] Annual General Meeting

2001-10-19 Thread Simpson, Bob

Don, as an interested observer of club activities I'd like to know why you
have difficulty with another current member of the board coming out in
public support of one of them. Please don't take this as criticism. Just a
friendly question.

As a democratic group, shouldn't any club member be able to discuss the
club's direction and controversies at any time or place. In fact, this forum
is the perfect place for discussions and as far as I know, access isn't
controlled by anyone. In my mind, the only thing that's inappropriate is
open hostility or personal attacks, which some debates have been known to
degenerate into. Why should a board member be any less able to express his
or her opinions here? As you said, they comment at their own peril.

I agree that we should not become a politically polarized organization and
that's always been a concern, whether it was dealings with the OCA, CCA,
police, public perceptions of cyclists or local politicians. In the end, I
just want to enjoy riding my bike with friends.

At the risk of starting a war, I have a problem with this message that I'd
like to get off my chest. First off, I admit to having no knowledge of any
political situation which may be unfolding here. I don't know what group is
supposedly unhappy with the activities of the club, nor how/whether they
plan to take over the OBC to suit their group's purpose.

But I do have some knowledge of governance and volunteer associations. In
the circumstance of two current members of the board running for the
position of president, I have difficulty with another current member of the
board coming out in public support of one of them, with veiled references to
some other group hijacking the club. I don't personally know either Kevin
Nelson, or Avery Burdett. I do admire their commitment as volunteers and
sincerely appreciate their efforts, as I appreciate the efforts of the other
OBC directors and committee members, on behalf of OBC members and cycling in
Ottawa. But I also understand and respect that there may be other members
who may see a different direction for the club. The last time I looked we
still lived in a democracy. We ignore, or worse yet, slander, their opinions
at our peril.

I believe that comments of this nature by a current board member are a
recipe for acrimony, future ill will, and promoting and polarizing political
divisions. I wish to belong to a bicycle club, not a political party. If
Kevin Nelson's purpose was to get more members out to the AGM, then in my
case he's succeeded. I'm not sure he'll appreciate the result.

Idiosyncratic Exceed Expectations Event (IEEE)

Riders receive an individual handicap based on past performances, but
afterwards (before knowing others' results) can appeal to a
knowledgeable panel of judges (say, those who show up at Mugs after the
event!) for an added compassionate handicap.

RE: [obc] results, handicapping?

2001-09-10 Thread Simpson, Bob

Well, Celia, you're opening a can of worms here and the power to determine
winners will lie in the hands of the handicap determiner. But then that's
always been the case. Some might argue that the time given for each year of
age is too generous. I can see the gears of a mathematician turning in your
head and I think that what you propose will be very difficult, but not
impossible, to implement.

You can make the handicaps any form that you like of course, but whether it
will be fair is up to debate. In the example you gave of the local Pro
female and the local top man, a baseline can be determined perhaps by
subtracting a percentage of the women's times, not subtracting the raw
number. That would be 112.5% or if you take the world record for the hour,
the woman comes in at 117.1% of the man. But if we take it to a ridiculous
extreme, what if we tried to adjust for all factors. If I show up with a
sore toe that day, should I be given a further 2 second bonus or what if the
TT is in the morning when I personally don't ride my best. Give me another
20 seconds there, perhaps. What about factoring in how many hours I have to
work per week and how physically demanding that work is? An unfortunate
result of this is that when a rider wins in the corrected results, there
might be some consternation that the handicapper gave them too much of an
edge.

Handicaps are rarely won by the fastest rider, if they're set up properly,
and that is probably the reason for this kind of event - an attempt to
reward the effort rather than the talent or natural ability. I would
support a more comprehensive handicap, but the complications of making it
perfectly fair is what keeps it from happening, I think.

Anyone tried a recumbent bike in Winter? I saw a fellow riding one (on the

and
therefore providing more stability? I've never tried one, but my general
impression
is they would not be as good as a regular bike because it is harder to shift
your
weight to help keep your balance. Are the smaller tires an advantage?

I have a Norco Kokanee mountain bike that I think I might try this winter.

RE: [obc] Crank Lengths

2001-06-28 Thread Simpson, Bob

There is more to consider than leg length when selecting a crank size. Foot
length is also a factor in how much a knee has to bend when pedaling. A
very long leg usually has a long foot and a short leg a short foot.
Assuming the ankle will flex the same on both, at the top and bottom of the
stroke, a long leg will go lower and higher by quite a bit, depending on the
relative foot size. I think that might explain the reason that cranks
aren't quite proportional to just the length of the leg.

Another related factor is the pedal technique or ankle flexing of each
individual for the same reasons. I ankle quite a bit and ride with 170 mm
cranks. I tried 175s and found that it just felt awkward. There is really
no mechanical advantage since the better leverage is countered by the need
to move the foot further at a slower cadence and higher gear.

Too bad it's not that easy to just try out a different crank length for a
week or so to see how it feels. If you feel that your pedal stroke is
cramped, go longer. If you feel that you are making too big a circle go
shorter.

[obc] Nostalgia

2001-06-27 Thread Simpson, Bob

I was cleaning out my file cabinet yesterday and found my notes from when I
officiated at an attempt on the National 15 km TT record by an 18 year old
Gord Fraser. It was on Manotick Station Road, where we once held the 15 km
TTs, on 1987 Sept 17. His 20:57 missed the record by a little bit - it had
just been broken by someone in western Canada. Times have come down a long
way since. He's done about a 18:30 here since then. Of course, remember
that at that time there was no aerobars, but he used two disk wheels and an
aero helmet.

The race starts as soon as the security people close the gates to through
traffic. That can be between 6:15 and 6:30. The race usually goes for
about one hour so it's over by 7:30. The beauty of these races is that once
you have signed up (show up at 6 PM for that) you can arrive late, let them
know that you're there and just jump in. You can also retire from the race
for a few laps, catch your breath and then (carefully) rejoin. Although if
you do those things, they ask that you not try to sprint at the end, out of
respect for those who have done the whole distance.

Did anyone see the article in today's Citizen concerning the Swiss army
bike brigade?
It's being disbanded after110 years of service.
They say the bikes are legendary - like the Swiss army knife, but what is
truly amazing is the weight at 21.6 kilograms (47.6 lbs.). No titanium
frames for these guys! How would you like to climb the Alps on one of
those things, with the addition of panniers loaded for a nice long tour?

[obc] Serenity, Now

2001-04-10 Thread Simpson, Bob

I feel that it is unfortunate that there are people in our club and outside
it who are finding it necessary to resort to rudeness and confrontation. We
are a community with varying but similar goals - to enjoy cycling and do it
safely. When a motorist or fellow cyclist gets upset, there is nothing
gained by getting angry back. Let's try to educate and learn, not retaliate
and alienate. There will always be differences of opinion, but what I have
seen is an unwillingness to cooperate and, frankly, I fear that the
community could come apart. Now, neither I nor anyone else should take any
abuse, but let's not try to fight abuse with more abuse.

Behave as if the whole world is watching. They probably are, as a matter of
fact.

RE: [obc] CfSC

2001-04-06 Thread Simpson, Bob

A mailing list without rants and inflammatory posts? What a concept, but
hopelessly idealistic. Some (many) of us can be irritating, but like any
community, we need to be tolerant. I feel that CfSC posts have a place here
to inform us of the highlights of their activities as long as they do not
overflow with politics or other non cycling related topics. The alternative
to the present situation, where we would restrict postings would undoubtedly
make this list less interesting. Deleting is an easy option, or filtering
out. And just a suggestion - those who tack on quotes about the global
economy or other non-related things, please go away to another forum.
