Cardboard boxes are usually available free from any bike dealer (although

Have you contacted United to see what they prefer? (Some carriers demand

 a plastic bag.
Some people swear by the simple plastic bag for a bike because the
handlers know what they have and are less likely to throw it around

[obc] Pave the Aboretum paths?

2002-11-12 Thread Tom Trottier
The NCC’s plan is to have a paved path running through its Arboretum
property. Much of this path would be in the same location as two
existing sections of crushed gravel paths, although the paved path
would be about 50% wider than the existing paths and would be
straighter. The NCC also wants to construct a new section of path to
connect the two existing sections. The new section would include a
bridge, as a creek cuts across the NCC’s Arboretum property. The
existing paths meander between NCC property and the Arboretum proper,
and make use of a bridge on Farm property to cross the creek.

The NCC intends that this section of paved path would connect with
other paved recreational pathways. To this end, the NCC plans on
altering the area around the Dow’s Lake Pavilion and HMCS Cataraqui, to
connect its Arboretum path to the paved pathway running along Queen
Elizabeth Driveway. At the south end of the Arboretum, the
recreational pathway would continue up the hill to Hartwell Locks and
then to the existing lights at Prince of Wales Drive, where it would
cross into the Experimental Farm and continue west using existing
pathways (with some modifications). The NCC is not currently concerned
with improving the Hartwell Locks crossing.

The Central Experimental Farm Advisory Council will be meeting on
Thursday. It might be useful for the Council to know your opinion at or
before the meeting. One way would be to contact the Secretary of the
Council before then:

Dan Schmid
Manager, Property and Facilities
Agriculture and AgriFood Canada
759-1977
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In addition, it would be great if anyone were available to attend the
meeting (and perhaps make a statement themselves - there is an
opportunity for short statements from the public at the beginning of
the meeting). The meeting is at 1:30 pm, Thursday November 14, in the
K.W. Neatby Building.

Seeking to ignite growth with products appealing to more than the
athletic and aggressively outdoorsy, the nation's bicycle makers are
exploring the commuter bike. The idea is to provide an inexpensive and
comfortable bicycle that comes with all the essentials — lights, locks,
suspension, fenders and even a bell — necessary for getting to work and
back.

In response to your e-mail, the proposal at the present time is for combined
cycle and car lanes. On a divided four-lane LeBreton Boulevard (which will
replace the Parkway) the inside lane is 3.6 metres wide and the outside
combined lane is 4.6 metres. Adjacent to the outside lane is a 2.8 metre
wide parallel parking lane. Combined lanes usually do not have separate
striping for the cycle portion of the lane.

We hope the information provided is helpful.

[obc] Missing link...

2002-10-07 Thread Tom Trottier

As an outside observer (didn't join the OBC this year), may I suggest
turning down the controversy?

It's easy enough to bookmark Celia's site on one's own computer. No one
on this list REALLY needs a link on the OBC website.

In a volunteer organisation, it is wise to accept people's differences
and work around them rather than exacerbating them and nitpicking every
minor failure or difference. That way you lose valuable volunteers'
work and create a sour taste in everyone's mouth, even the winners.

This is a tempest in a teapot.
I suggest taking it off the boil before the tea is spoilt.

A cyclist was killed today between 2 and 3pm at the corner of Rochester and
Gladstone. A gravel truck and trailer was making a right turn S onto
Rochester when it ran the cyclist over.

start wearing away/breaking apart over time, especially at the back,
probably from pulling them up and down. Once this happens, the back
view can be quite revealing to riders behind. Revealing, in some
instances, can be good, but in the case of worn out shorts, I find it
quite revolting. I'm sure the owners of the worn shorts are quite
 oblivious to this.

The only way one can check for worn-ness is to inspect the shorts
periodically before putting them on. Holding them up to the light
and comparing the back with the front is a good indicator.

Perhaps we could just reverse them?

I think the bike lanes on the Champlain Bridge are great, even the

the correct side) and we saw a man cycling pulling a baby in a
 trailer.

And what would have happened to this man and baby if he were
travelling southbound and followed the big white arrow arrow which
directs cyclists to make a right turn directly across the lane of
merging traffic? It makes me shudder to think of it.

That would be true if they were coming from Island Park Drive in
Ottawa.
If However, if they came from the pathway that would not be the case.

Experienced cyclists know better and will ignore this right turn
signal and get on the bike lane *after* the merge lane. One can only
hope that novice cyclists (epescially ones with baby trailers) will
ignore this brain dead right turn arrow and do the safe thing...

I do not support the right hook across the merge lane.

If the bike lane had been designed to accepted practice then the
bike lane would have no right hook.

I do not support the bike lane that crosses a right turn diverge
and leads you to hop the curb to a pathway.

The bike lane should continue to the intersection. If should even
continue to Island Park Drive which already has bike lanes on it.

Riding on the sidewalk is not the answer.

In response to your e-mail, the bridge over Booth Street will be removed
to create sites for public institutions such as the Canadian War Museum
and to open the riverfront to public access.

Will the War museum stand athwart Booth St? I presume you mean the
sloped approaches may get in the way. I suggest they could easily be
accommodated by having a wider hill E of Booth and by integrating the
path into the landscaping around the War museum. Otherwise there will
be a lot of cross-traffic and delays for all at the new lights just S
of the bridge.

Furthermore, the bike path that now comes from the west along Ottawa
Street goes north on Broad and then east on Fleet will be relocated so
that the detour road can be constructed. It will start at the same point
in the west, cross the aqueduct at Preston Street continue east
between the open aqueduct and the Transitway, cross Booth at the
Transitway lights and continue along the aqueduct on the east side of
 Booth to Pooley's Bridge.

Finally, bike paths will be of two types in the future. One recreational
and the other more of a commuter route. The recreational path will
continue from its present location on the riverfront, continue over the
inlet to the aqueduct using part of the existing bridge, around the War
Museum, crossing Booth at lights just south of the Chaudiere Bridge and
then eastward past the Mill Restaurant and then either into the pathway
below Parliament Hill or up to the Wellington/Portage intersection. The
commuter route will continue eastward from the shoreline cross under the
parkway at the old Transitway exit, pass along the aqueduct on both
sides, cross Booth at the Transitway lights for now (if, as and when the
Transitway is grade-separated by the City there will be a tunnel under
Booth) to connect to the pathway east of Booth along the aqueduct, to
Pooley's Bridge and then to connect up the hill to Wellington.

 I notice in

pdf that the curb lane is the same size as the passing lane, 3.5m. I
believe that the Ottawa City practice is to make the curb lane wider
than the passing lane by a metre or so (e.g. 4 and 3m) to allow more
room for motorists to pass cyclists proceeding at 30-40kph.

Will you be adjusting the curb lane to be wider?

Conclusion : The findings suggest an increased risk of sustaining
head injury in a bicycle accident when a motor vehicle is involved
and confirm protective effect of helmet wearing for any bicycle
 accident.

This study also reviews the previous literature. Since all state helmet
laws cover only children, this applies to children 16 under.
http://www.helmets.org/leggrant.htm
Section V. Conclusion.
Bicycle helmet legislation is effective at achieving its desired
goal: a reduction in bicycle accident fatalities for younger riders.
Estimates of the effect of the legislation, using a large panel data
set and a variety of regression approaches, robustly indicate that
legislation requiring youths to wear bicycle helmets reduces juvenile
fatalities by about 15%, without leading to an increase in juvenile
pedestrian or motor vehicle fatalities as an offsetting effect.
Currently, this would represent a savings of about twenty lives per
year in states that do not currently have such legislation

See other info at http://www.helmets.org/mandator.htm

The question in my mind is not whether helmets, or helmet laws, save
lives. They do. The question is whether people have the right to live
dangerously. Do we have to have all danger mandated out of our control?
Will skydiving and rockclimbing be outlawed? If adult macho idiots want
to avoid safety gear, let them improve the gene pool by leaving it.

Tom

PS I almost always wear my fluorescent/reflector-decked helmet. It's
not just to protect my noggin, but to show up better to motorists, and
to give turning cues when I turn my head.

The city has an advanced GIS system.

Perhaps they could be persuaded to print some simple route maps for
tourists and residents, specially since the city is now so big. The

One on the things that I recommend carrying around is a road map of
Eastern Ontario - I generally keep a copy of the provincial road map -
good enough when you are getting lost! You can get a PDF copy to print

You have the expression wrong. It blows up real good!

[obc] (Fwd) [CfSC] Rideau River Bike Lane Blockage

--- Forwarded message follows ---
Date sent: Mon, 06 May 2002 08:41:32 -0400
Subject:[CfSC] Rideau River Bike Lane Blockage
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: Andrew Oakes

Surprised a little shocked to find barriers up across the bike lane
going North along the Rideau River just past the the entry point from
Algonquin College (bridge). Bikes were still going through - but if
they rip up the pavement at the section were the bikepath dips below
the Queensway, that will require a major rerouting for bike commuters
onto the Vanier parkway, or across the river. In the few minutes I
spent talking to the foreman, about 10 bikes or rollerbalders went
through, so this disruption has the potential to affect a fair number
of people.

The construction foreman said they would try to keep the path open,
but he was making no promises.

Re: [obc] eye protection?

2002-04-23 Thread Tom Trottier

Clear polycarbonate shooting glasses are strong, light, and usually
fit over regular glasses. I have a pair for nite rides.

I've found leBaron in Bells Corners to have the best prices for
camping, fishing, and hunting gear - usually better than MEC for what
they carry, e.g. Leatherman Wave at $94 vs $109 at MEC.

cycling eyewear that can go overtop of regular glasses. I suggested to
her to try a ski shop or even better a ski/bike shop. They would be the
most likely to carry a wide array of ski goggles, including those that
are designed to fit over glasses (and have interchangeable lenses.
Anyone know what shops carry these?

I also suggested MEC, although I am not sure what kind of stuff like
 that they carry.

I think the idea is for wind water protection. I am not sure if Rx
glasses specific to cycling are an option for this family. I've seen
them, they are great but $$$, and I think only from an optometrist?

Are there any other creative ideas out there? I would appreciate any
advice you can offer to this list. I said I would get back to her this week.

Maybe the OBC should be appealing to more non-members so as to make

E-BIZ TECH REVIEW: LIGHT STRIPS COMMUNICATE VIA INFRARED

Here's a fairly low-tech invention that I think may
have some high-tech applications: Hokey Spokes. These
are $24.99 illuminated plastic strips that clip onto
the spokes of a bicycle wheel and flash colored
patterns or text messages. The best part is that you
can clip multiple strips onto more than one spoke. The
maker claims that the devices then communicate with
each other using infrared messaging to synchronize
their designs and timing.

If you can do all that, it seems to me there are a
variety of more sophisticated applications for these
things. Couldn't you program them to do the wave in,
say, a football stadium -- without the fans in the
bleachers actually moving? The uses are limited only
by your imagination.

RE: [obc] Ottawa River pathways.

2002-03-21 Thread Tom Trottier

Sounds much safer. Now if only they had a separate pedestrian tunnel
at Island park to avoid accidents

  Subject:[obc] Ottawa River pathways.

Having attended the NCC presentation last evening regarding the Ottawa
River pathways (Champlain Bridge to New Orchard St), here is a synopsis
  of the major proposals.

  - The north side pathway will be upgraded to a Recreational Pathway of
3 meters width, and this will be the main pathway through the region.
Parts of the current 2 meter north side path will be left as is, being
by-passed by sections of the new 3 meter pathway. The predominant new
section will be from Champlain Bridge to slightly west of Westboro beach.

  - The road crossing at Churchill Ave. connecting the south side and
current north side paths will be eliminated.

  - The south side 2 meter pathway will be extended from the foot of
Churchill Ave. to Island Park Drive.

  - The access tunnel between north and south at Westboro beach will be
  enhanced.

  - The 2 meter south side pathway will remain as is, but
commuters/roller bladers/etc. will be encouraged to access the new Rec.
Path. at the New Orchard and Westboro beach tunnels and/or the Island
  Park traffic lights.

The design calls for a new 3.0m path to follow the river between
the road and the river from the Island Park Bridge to the Westboro
beach underpass at Orchard park. Three sections, which had benches
on them, would remain as the older 2.0m path, and the new 3.0m
path would be separate. This way the benches would not actually
be on the main thoughrowfare. The design avoids the need to cross
at the current grade level crossing which would be eliminated.

The older 2.0m path between the road and the community would be left
as is. This path would also be extended from the current pedestrian
crossing to Island Park. This would then allow for paths on both
 sides of the roadway.

In future years they hope to extend the recreational path along
the river along to connect with Britannia Beach along the river front
and widen current pedestrian only path to a shared use recreational
 3.0m path.

 I went to the meeting. I was there between 4:50 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

I would like to inform cyclists that there was a high senior citizen
content at the meeting who where very concerned about loosing the
river front pathway to cyclists by having the shared path between the
road and the river. There was a strong suggestion to put the cyclists
on the other side of the road closer to the community and leave the
 river path for pedestrians only.

They were also worried some of the paths that currently are signed as
pedestrian only will loose the designation. This is true even when the
design showed the older pathway remaining, separate from the new pathway.
They indicated they were still worried about and have seen cyclists
travelling on the pedestrian only paths. They felt that some cyclists
would use the older 2.0m path closer to the river rather than the 3.0m
path only a few metres away.

I know I am speaking to the converted here, but the message from the
senior citizens and the walkers at the meeting was cyclists should
slow down, sound their bell before passing, and pass with care. If
more cyclists did that then the walkers would be a lot happier.

RE: [obc] [CfSC] In Many Ways .... Again

Say, 2 series of 1-week daycamps in the summer, and a 1-week end-of-season
tour at the end? Perhaps the Department of Transport could be convinced to
donate some resources.

I wonder if the Y or the schools could administer something like this?

This could also provide some college or highschool bicyclists with summer
jobs, assuming they earn their CAN-BIKE instructor status beforehand.

Re: [obc] OBC Photo Archive 2001

2002-01-18 Thread Tom Trottier

Having a CD of photos is great!

Instead of custom orders, I suggest Ron offer compilation CDs of each event
or month so he can make 2 or 10 (or 100?) the same, depending on the
orders. This would also simplify ordering since just the event, rather than
the particular photo, could be requested, and making 10 CDs the same is
less hassle than 10 different assortments.

The best of the photos could also be sent to local papers to aid in
publicising the OBC.

In Ottawa, for
example, the 2001 edition would not let you cross the Portage Bridge between Ottawa
and Hull; 2002
does. The Ottawa-Kennebunkport trip included Bear Trap Rd. just after the ferry to
Vermont. This
road is shown accurately now whereas it was not a through road on the previous
CD-ROM.

I've been using programs like this one for several years to plan cycling routes and
I'd love to hear
from anyone else who has experience (bad or good) with other programs like this.

You are right, everyone does these things, both in their cars and on their bikes.
The point is safety and driving according to the conditions that exist at the time

Yes, I believe in PR stops too. Cars at 4-ways often wave me thru.

(how many actually bring their cars to a complete stop at a
4-way?). My view is there is more risk coming to a complete stop on
a bike because I have to keep my balance. As for sidewalks, very
rarely I take them, but occasionally I will because it is safer -
for example - the Laurier St bridge.

I take the middle of the lane.

RE: [obc] results, handicapping?

2001-09-07 Thread Tom Trottier

Like a golf handicap.

But then we're handicapping for performance rather than non-personal
factors. What should we equalise to find the best?

Age/gender handicapping is fairly easy recognises achievement more
than improvement.

Performance handicapping takes more record keeping, and young
improving cyclists will likely always win! Doing this on a seasonal
basis would be better than averaging in the last 5 years of times.

Might be a nice way to have each rider keep a passport for their
times, getting a handicap assigned after the first 3 trials,
recalculated each time, to see if they're improving.

Tom

On Friday, September 07, 2001 at 16:56, Les Humphreys (K) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote on RE: [obc] results, handicapping?, saying..

While the notion of age handicapping may be appropriate to level the
playing field for older competitors, it will always favour riders who
have always been fast, no matter what their age.
An alternative approach would be to compute a handicap based on a
rider's ability compared with a known standard ('scratch time'), such
as the current club champion, and allocate a handicap based on the
difference between a riders average time and the scratch time.
Under the latter approach, the person with the best improvement
would be the winner of the handicap competition. This method
discriminates against nobody except possibly those who do not have
enough performances on record to yield a reliable average. (Such
individuals would be accorded zero handicap).

[obc] Tour departure points Rack'n'Roll

2001-08-30 Thread Tom Trottier

As a peripatic (peripathetic?) tourer, I'd like to suggest, for next
year, some departure points for some of the Tuesday, Saturday, and
Sunday tours which match up with the end points of OC Transpo
Rack'n'Roll.

This way,
- Cyclists who want to take the bus there or back could be
accomodated.
- Cyclists can start further out of the city than, say, Billings
Bridge or Brittania Beach
- Cyclists without a car won't have to cycle 20-50k each way to
reach remote starts like Fitzroy Harbour.or Stanley Corners

Bicycles are accomodated on the O-train, 2, 95 and 97. Possible tour
starts could be:
- Greenboro station (transit train, 97)
- Woodroffe Fallowfield (95 SouthWest end)
- Place d'Orleans (95 East end)
- South Keys (97 South end, every bus; further stops lack free
parking)
- Kanata Town Centre (97 West end)
I think there is free parking near each of these.
The 2 goes East to Blair or West to Bayshore, but the 97 goes further
West and the 95 goes further East.
Tours to Quebec could start anywhere along the transitway where there
is parking and bridge proximity.

One limit is that each bus is limited to 2 bikes, but the 95 and 97
run very frequently, as often as every 3.5 minutes.

Another problem is how to divide tours by speed when we are lacking
our usual lampposts.

Comments, anyone?

I can tell you from experience that the 97 runs every 20 minutes -
if there more than 6 people are waiting with bikes to go downtown from
Kanata, any after the six would be faster to ride in than wait the hour for
 their turn.
This plan only works for the casual Rack'nRoller.

Would also work if they arrived back at different times.
Also, some would be coming across the entire city, not just half of
it.

It would work better than the current departure points which make no
accommodation for any busser.
