[opensocial] Request: Add a container.supports() method
(This request is on the wishlist page, but this provides a forum for discussing it) Offering a method tentatively called 'container.supports()' will allow developers to test various features of the container. For example, ning (as of this moment) doesn't appear to support canvas pages. That's where I put the preferences interface for my users, so I need to do something about that. Like let you set the preferences from the profile view. But I don't want every container to offer a 'set preferences' button on the profile, only those that have no canvas. Therefore I'd do something like this: if( ! container.supports('canvas') ){ showPrefsButtonOnProfile() } --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups OpenSocial Developers group. You're absolutely right and I think google should at least be more sympathetic about us, tell us that this feature is not working yet and let us know if or when this will be ready instead of letting us - developers - get all excited about it and then get hugely disappointed with all this OpenSocial turmoil... If I copy and paste this URL, after logging in, I see the error: The scope parameter was bad or missing. Yes, I am registered for the sandbox, and I have also tried it with a variety of next urls, and If I replace the scope URL by another one, say the Calendar API URL it works but of course gives an incorrect scope. I suspect there is a documentation error in the OpenSocial gData pages. I've tried every combination of http/https, with/without sandbox in front, etc. to no avail. Is there any way to get the list of valid scope URLs. And if AuthSub is not to be used for OpenSocial, there ought to be a note saying so rather than a broken link in the API documentation. In that case, what is the proper authentication method to use? Do I need to use the ClientLogin method which means having to store the users' passwords? My next question, assuming that I log into a different scope like blogger or google base: If I access the URLhttp://orkut.com/feeds/people/me orhttp://orkut.com/feeds/people/me/friends. (With or without a sandbox in the hostname makes no difference) I end up with a 404 error if I am using HTTP, and even worse, if I use HTTPS, it redirects me to http://www.google.com/; with no indication of error or success. I assume I am doing something wrong, but I would like an error message that acknowledges that I am attempting to access a feed the wrong way rather than an absolutely meaningless 404 or 302 response. [opensocial] Re: How to access the data from another page
I think the situation and my experience is far worse. You cant build an app that does any multipage flows. As soon as you leave the main page (instantiated by gmodules.com), you get opensocial is not defined errors. Forget multipages, I thought I was being smart and created a frame pulling content from my site (mymusik.us). And lost the opensocial context. Dont even bother adding your variables to a url and invoking say sandbox.orkut.com/Application.aspx?appId=...yourvar=xx You will get a Location.toString permission denied if you attempt accessing the window.location.search string for the top level url (or window.top...) The top level url comes from gmodules.com. Your js doesnt. Thanks, I had forgotten about the refresh interval directive. It works. My plan is to replace caching with a combination of persistent storage and the activities API to detect when certain things have changed, and call the remote server only in those cases. It could be days or weeks between calls, rather than once every hour or so, but still the data is available when needed. Ron On Nov 7, 3:02 pm, hobnobLover [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for that. [opensocial] Re: Fetching user preferences defined in the Gadget XML with newFetchPersonAppDataRequest in Orkut
Excellent question. I am facing just the same problem: as I see, the OWNER would customize my app (that is, save options to *his* PersonAppData) and whomever sees the gadget on the OWNER's profile should see it as configured by the OWNER. But the lack of the ability of passing OWNER to newUpdatePersonAppDataRequest simply makes that impossible. I also tried to cheat (getting the OWNER's ID and passing), and even tried to improvise with instance appdata - of which I am not entirely sure of the precise scope, maybe I missed something on the docs. And what puzzles me more is the dubious language in http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/docs/javascript/reference/opensocial.DataRequest.html#newUpdatePersonAppDataRequest : String id - The ID of the person to update; only the special VIEWER ID is currently allowed. What does currently mean? That the final version will have other possibilities? Is it an OpenSocial limitation, or just of Orkut's implementation? :-( On 7 nov, 12:59, Clayton Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I get failure when persisting data with OWNER which is documented in the open social documentation for it. It's left for us to imagine having to duplicate most of googles backend for this with no more guide then examples of the output and reference. http://groups.google.com/group/opensocial-container/browse_thread/thread/43522fdcccf6cbe2# Other then that there does seem to be some hands being thrown in the air over the choice of gData over more open extensions. Cool, it works now. I missed that sandbox step even though it was listed. [opensocial] using ajax inside of a gadget
Hey Guys, Sorry for the possibly newbee question, but are we limited to using google's _IG_FetchContent() inside of our open social gadgets, or is it possible to use the one's from our own toolkit? A lot of our code currently uses prototype.js (1.6.0 as of writing), and depends on its build json parsing. Not a huge issue of course to rewite those parts of the code, but for portability it would be nicer if we could keep using our prototype's Ajax.Request instead of google's _IG_FetchContent. [opensocial] sandox redirecting to www
When I try to access the sandbox.orkut.com site I get redirected to the live site (www.orkut.com). Why is this happening? Is it a problem with my developer account? I did get an email from google telling me I had been given access to the sandbox. Has anyone had this problem? [opensocial] All container hosts need to offer an open sandbox
(This is on the wishlist page and is here to enable discussion) Quite frankly I'm sick of signing up to all these services to test my apps. And there's not that many of them yet. Therefore I'll probably just stick to developing against one or two of the more popular container hosts. Obviously this isn't what the Goog wants. He wants our apps to work against all containers and to be tested against them. Therefore I'd like to have the Goog insist that all container hosts offer a way to test an application (via a URL) without having to log in and create an account. Just like you can test iGoogle widgets without having an iGoogle account. These containers would be expected to be a correct representation of what an app would look and behave like if I were to add it as a signed- up user. Thoughts? Cheers! Google's _IG_Fetch* routines use their proxy for requesting document across the domain boundary. Your prototype.js solution will only be able to query the local domain (which will be gmodules.com) which isn't likely to be what you want. So that would leave us with 2 options i guess, one would be to use something hackedie like: http://www.mellowmorning.com/2007/11/07/updated-cross-site-ajax-plugin-for-prototype/ and the second would be to prefix al ajax calls with: '/ig/jsonp?url='+escape('original.url') not sure if either method is preferable, and the second one sounds very platform specific, so i guess rewriting to IG_Fetch i go ;-( -- Chris Chabot --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups OpenSocial Developers group. [opensocial] Re: using ajax inside of a gadget
Hi, You cannot use your custom ajax call, it won't work, but ... You can use the old-fashioned way = an iframe :) This works and you can emulate an ajax call using an iframe. Regards, Ignacio. You'd then have to parse the result: you don't get back the vanilla content but instead get back data that you'd need to do googlemagic on to extract the original content Cheers! There does not seem to be a way to do this yet. On Nov 7, 7:16 pm, reuben [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone see a way to invite friends to install your app? [opensocial] Re: All container hosts need to offer an open sandbox
I'm not sure if it'll work properly. As apposed to the google gadget that aren't user based, the openSocial apps will need to get the owners details - his friends, etc. So if you don't have an account on that container, it'll have no data to give you, you couldn't add friends in order to test friends related applications and it will not be a good representation of the application. But insisting that every container have a sandbox area to check and adapt the apps., before releasing them to the general public, is a very good idea. Also, I think it will be done even if Google wont insist because as a developer I would prefer to create applications to the containers that give me a better working environment. Lee Eden.
