Re: orion-list Jeremiah's Eternal Priesthood, the Rechabim

2002-05-28 Thread Jeffrey B. Gibson

Geoff Hudson wrote:

So how does one explain the almost incidental remark about priestly
Rechabites in Eusebius' history (2.23) and said to have been written by
 Hegesippus?:

'While they pelted him (James) with stones, one of the descendants of Rechab
the son of the Rechabim -- the PRIESTLY family to which Jeremiah the Prophet
bore witness, called out: Stop! what are you doing? the Righteous One is
 praying for you.'

One explains it first by noting that you rely too heavily not on the actual text
of Eusebius, but on a particular English translation of it (that of G.A.
Williamson) that is contains a bias toward seeing the Rechabites as priests.

More accurate, I think, is the translation of which renders the passage:

Thus they were stoning him, when one of the priests of the sons of Rechab, a son
of the Rechabites, spoken of by Jeremiah the prophet, cried out saying,'Cease,
what are you doing?

In other words, the text you refer to seems to say that while there were priests
who were Rechabites, not all Recabites were -- or were even thought to be --
priests.

Secondly, by noting that even IF the Rechabites were a priestly family in NT
times, it does not mean they always were. The evidence for the idea of any
Rechabite as priestly is late, as is the testimony that they were Levite
singers, and in any case testifies to knowledge that they were NOT priestly from
early on, but only came to assume this role after Rechabites who were not
priests began to marry their daughters to priests.

Third, by noting that Hegesippus' statement is itself suspect since Epiphanius
(Heresy LXXVIII. 14) substitutes Symeon the brother of James for the
Rechabite.

orion-list apologies

2002-05-29 Thread Jeffrey B. Gibson

Apologies for sending my post on Jeremiah and alleged Rechabite priests
twice. When the first version of my post did not come through in a
timely fashion, I thought I had fouled something up in the address or
header fields. So I sent the message again -- not realizing that by the
time I sent it the second time (with an altered subject line), the first
version had come through.

2002-05-29 Thread Jeffrey B. Gibson

Herb Basser wrote:

thanks for the citation-- i now recall george had written me about this
months ago and i saw the passage but forgot about it until geoff brought it
tou our attention again. I'm not sure of all the Yalkut's sources here but
 here is what we find:

yalkut Jeremiah preserves: some say their daughters married priests and
 their grandchildren offered sacrifices--

this doesnt make rechabites priests at all-- lineage follows males.

And if I take the some say correctly, this passage also indicates that there
was some doubt that the claim itself (about daughters, etc.) is in any way
reliable.

If so, the peg upon which anyone might attempt to hang the thesis of a
Rechabite priesthood, let alone a long established one, becomes even weaker than
what you note it already is.

George Brooks wrote:

 REPLY:
The Talmud is FULL of some say commentary. I hardly think
you are in a position to unwravel the entire Talmud because of the
nature of the dialogue-approach to discussion.

[snip]

Prof. Gibson, I know you find it easier to BLOCK my inquiries than
to help explore them with me.

So should I take your claim that you make above -- i.e. that my
**conjecture** about the import of some say is wrong, and that the
conclusion I note **may** be derived from my premise IF my premise is sound
is therefore invalid -- as a blocking of my inquiry?

In any case, I never made the claim that I was trying to unwravel (sic) the
entire Talmud. Rather my purpose was far more modest. And that was only to
raise the question of whether, if we accept a particular interpretation of
its introduction, a particular text meant what you thought it meant.

May I note, then, that if you were indeed interested in doing what you
chastise me for supposedly not doing, namely, exploring inquiries, you would
not have stopped with the bare (and unsupported) statement that the Talmud is
full of the use of the phrase some say to introduce a reputedly traditional
claims about persons or groups, since the fact that it is used frequently or
not, has little bearing on what the phrase's **meaning function** within the
Talmud was. Rather, you would have explored with me whether my conjecture
about what the Rabbis **were up to** when they used that phrase -- in notable
contrast to their using the one, also found frequently in the Talmud, which
attributes the material being recalled to a **specific** authority (R. Jose,
R. Judah, etc. ) -- had anything going for it.

In other words, the issue at hand is not the frequency of the phrase in the
Talmud, but its **meaning and function**. What leads you to think that the
**meaning and function** of some say in the introduction to reputedly
traditional claims about persons or groups is other than what I think it
might me?

JG

orion-list Annual SBL E-Listers' Meeting

2002-10-24 Thread Jeffrey B. Gibson
It's that time of year again when the annual Society of Biblical
Literature meeting is just round the corner (Nov. 23rd-Nov. 26th) and I
begin to arrange the now traditional (6th annual!) SBL meeting of NT
e-listers (i.e. XTalkers, B-Greeks, and Corpus Paulinum, Kata Markon,
Biblical Studies, T-C List, Orion, Ioudaios, John-Lit, and Synoptic-L
members) who will be going to Toronto for the conference.

The meeting itself is planned for Saturday, Nov. 23rd at 11am, as always
in the Exhibition Hall at -- and with the kind indulgence of the
stalwart representatives of -- the Gramcord booth in the Exhibition
(this year Booth 622). It is a great opportunity to place a face to an
one hitherto known only as an electronic personality and/or to renew
acquaintances made at previous SBLs.

As I've done in the past 5 years in arranging this meeting, I'd like to
get an advance head count of those of you who are intending to attend
this year's SBL. I'd also like to know who among the intended attendees
is presenting a paper during the conference (and at what time and place
and within what SBL group or section).

So this is the first call to write me OFF LIST (at [EMAIL PROTECTED])
and let me know

(a) if you will be attending;

(b) if and when and under what aegis you are presenting a paper, AND

(c) what you consider to be your home E-List.

I'll keep everyone updated as the info comes in to me.

Looking forward to seeing you in Toronto!
