RE: Have Surface Pro 4 multi monitor Display issues been resolved?

2016-01-11 Thread Anthony Borton
I wanted to add a word of caution with regard to the Surface Display Dock.

I purchased the Surface Display Dock in the hopes of running 2 x 2560x1440
monitors via the two mini display ports in the dock. Something the device
should well be able to do. I am using a Surface Pro 4 with the display dock and
have applied all the latest firmware and driver updates I can find. I am using
two mini-DP to full size DP cables so no adapters.

At the moment I am struggling to get reliable connection to just ONE of my BENQ
BL2420PT monitors. Given up on two for now. After trying every possible
solution I can think of and find online, this is what I end up doing just to
get it displaying on one of the external monitors about 90% of the time.

1. Unplug the power from the display dock. (I also remove the connection
from the Surface but I'm not sure I need to)

2. Wait for 45-60seconds.

3. Plug the power cables back into the dock and connect the dock to the SP4

4. Turn the SP4 on.

This is the ONLY way I can get the device to display on my external monitor and
even then it's only 90% of the time. I've also changed the power settings to
ensure the SP4 doesn't go into sleep mode as it never comes back with the
external display working.

I have also used the same Display Dock and SP4 in another office using a DELL
monitor at 1920x1080 and it seems to work far more reliably. Can't easily
confirm if the issue is more related to the BENQ monitor or the Display Dock at
this time.

It really shouldn't be too much to expect these things just work surely.

Cheers

Anthony

Just as a heads up for those with older monitors that for whatever reason have
DVI but not HDMI or DisplayPort. For some insane reason the new MS Surface Dock
doesn't support DVI (and yes I know you need an adapter). Ironically the
Surface Book itself doesn't have an issue with DVI monitors (again using a mini
DisplayPort to DVI converter).

Unfortunately I don't have the budget for a new monitor.

I don't think a MST Hub will work with my current monitor resolutions.

This way I can run

*The surface pro 4 display

*Two 1920x1200 monitors off the docking station

*2560x1440 monitor from the USB3 external video card.

I am still trying to find out exactly what the surface pro 4 supports with the
docking station. Their tech specs on their website don't really give too much
information.

RE: Hacked together standing desk

2014-10-26 Thread Anthony Borton
I’ve been using a Varidesk Pro Plus from Varidesk (http://au.varidesk.com/)
for a while and find myself alternating between standing and sitting every hour
or so. It’s $440 plus delivery but it can be placed on most existing desks to
convert it into a sit/stand desk pretty easily. I have dual 26” monitors on it
and raising/lowering the desk is really easy.

I had been considering a standing desk on the condition that I also have a
sitting desk. I'm not convinced standing for 8-9 hours a day would be a good
idea. The option I was considering (but haven't tried to implement yet) was to
setup a standard sitting desk but then add an additional monitor, keyboard and
mouse as a standing desk next to the sitting desk. You then have a KVM so you
can switch between your standing and sitting monitors. This means switching
between sitting and standing is as simple as pressing a button and standing up
(or sitting down). It doesn't require a fancy or modified desk and if you
happen to have a spare monitor/mouse/keyboard you only need a standard cheap
standing desk and kvm. This setup would even work with multiple monitors,
especially since you don't need to switch all the monitors.

[OT] Recommendations for good WordPress resource

2014-10-01 Thread Anthony Borton
Hi,

While not really anything to do with .NET, I figured the folks on this list
would be a good group to ask this question of...

I wanted to check with the list to see if anyone could recommend a good
WordPress resource. I need someone for a few days to do some consolidation of
blogs for me.

Requirements:

- good with multisite WordPress

- good with URL rewrites

- experience migrating blogs

Only 2-3 days work I suspect which can be spread out over a week or so.

I can always go searching the net but I've always found personal
recommendations a much better means of finding good people :)

Thanks

Hey Tom,

I’ve had the 920 which I loved and then upgraded to the 1020 for the awesome
camera. The only thing I would like to add to the 1020 is wireless charging but
the Nokia charging sleeve works well for that task.

Like most other recommendations, I’d suggest you keep an eye out for the 930.

Hey all,

Hope good Easter is being had by all :)

I'm going to need some kind of payment gateway and would love to know if anyone
has any good/bad experiences with them.

Looking for something that deals with Australian banks, as well as has a good
.Net friendly API.

Have been looking at what eWay can do but don't want to rush in with the first
I've come across without some research.

Hey Coatsy,

I've been using the QC15's for a few years and have loved them. I've looked at
the QC20's a few times wondering if I should upgrade (smaller to carry around)
but have not made the move.

Have you found the transition from the 15's (over the ear) to the 20's (in ear)
has been OK? Are the comfortable?

Bose++

I've had the over ear type for years (QC2, followed by QC15) and have just
bought a pair of the in-ear QC20. I can't recommend either of these options
highly enough. While they're not cheap, they are awesome. This week I'm cutting
code in a room with up to 10 people having interesting conversations about
things which would usually distract me. I can't hear them at all when I'm
wearing these, especially if I have music playing as well.

Do it now, you won't regret it.

+1 for the Bose gear. I wear them all the time on long flights and love them
but have also used them in other environments and they are great.

The noise reduction quality is amazing.

+1 also to the idea of drowning out part of the other noise. While they work
well without anything even plugged in, clearly you'll lose the other
distractions better if you have sounds of your own.

For the same reason, I often will have the TV, or music, etc. on when I'm home
alone working just to provide background noise. Otherwise, every little sound
seems to be distracting.

Greg

http://worldwide.bose.com/axa/en_au/web/quietcomfort_20i/page.html

I have a set of these - there is an 'active' mode that basically reduces people
talking to sounding like a faint version of the peanuts teacher (I hope
that's not too old a reference for people...)

I can vouch it works amazingly well in an open office, when I have them on ppl
have to wave at me to get attention - I have a mechanical keyboard and I can't
hear that either - YMMV of course - if you go to the bose store they're pretty
good at helping you test for your situation, especially at that price tag. I
had the guy do loud sniffles for me so I could see if it worked for that...

RE: Migrating TFS

2014-02-10 Thread Anthony Borton
Hi Grant,

I moved a client with around 35 team projects from an on-premises TFS up to
Visual Studio Online using the TFS Integration Platform. I was pretty lucky in
that they only needed the source to go up and didn't have work items to work
about. The process was quite a bit more time consuming than I had planned and
it was a seemingly never-ending exercise in massaging settings to get the
source (with history) from each TP up to the cloud. A future TFS 2013 update
should include a feature to help move data from VSO down to TFS but I haven't
heard if there is anything there to help go the other way.
