SharePoint magically stopped working!?!?!??

2010-10-27 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey All,

Yesterday at about 2-3pm SharePoint just started displaying 404 errors
for everyone on the main application website (port 80). No changes to
sharepoint or its database had been made at all yesterday.

I have restored a backup of the SharePoint server from the weekend and
also a previous version of the database from the start of the weekI
still just get 404 errors

Any ideas on where to look for some more information?

Alsoanyone in Melbourne able to come and fix this for me? Email me
your hourly rate if so...we need this fixed ASAP!!

Cheers,

Yes, only the main portal.

I can still access the admin site.

We don't have any firewals, ISA, SSL installed. I cannot even access the
site from the server itself browsing loopback ip / localhost.

I had the same problem when I installed a hot fix a while ago. Can't
remember how I fixed it. The way I fixed it was:

stsadm -o provisionservice -action stop -servicetype spwebservice

stsadm -o provisionservice -action start -servicetype spwebservice

psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force

I can't remember if it's a 404 error that is thrown when the application

Ken,

Check the application pool's for the website, also check the application

I assume this is across the entire farm and multiple calendars?

If so, only solutions I know of are third party list rollup and calendar
web parts I've mentioned previously. You then create a master view to
suit your needs.

Do a full backup then a transaction log backup in SQL. After that you
should be able to shrink the DB (in SQL Server tools). You *could*
change the recovery model to simple (but I would not recommend that for
production DB's), then shrink.

Usually the rule of thumb for an import is twice the disk space of the
content DB.

But in this case you've already done that and are now just re-attaching?
I've never watched this process through SQL so can't say if it's normal
or not.

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my content db from one SQL server to another, that has
gone fine. I am no re-attaching the content db in MOSS Central admin,
the DB is around 4GB.

It looks to be going ok from the SharePoint server logs, but I'm
watching the SQL server log file (LDF) of the database and it is growing
at a rate of notes (SharePoint is still in the process of attaching this
content DB).it's now 10GB and growing rather rapidly.

What's going on here?

I don't have a truckload of space on this SQL server, so I'm thinking it
will just hit a limit and stop short of adding that content db properly
when it runs out of space!?

Yeah, I would recommend setting up a domain service account to run your
web applications under, and then granting that account owner permissions

Hi Ken,

Yeah, I would recommend setting up a domain service account to run your
web applications under, and then granting that account owner permissions
to the migrated content database.

Hey Guys,

I've moved our SharePoint to another database and trying to connect it
but getting error. I've got the following log data in relation and it
looks like a SQL access issue, I'm struggling to get it to work so
hoping for a hand!

Server setup:

HGHVMOSS

- Moss 2007

- SQL 2005 Express

Have moved the content DB to our SQL server

HGVMDB1

Do I need to setup some new accounts etc somewhere for the HGHVMOSS to
access the DB moved to HGVMDB1?

You should be able to get it working with domain accounts... You'll
need to change the ID of the application pool under which your
SharePoint site is running, as that is what SharePoint will use to
contact SQL in Windows Auth.

Yeah, it was weird. I had made no configuration changes, it had just
unconfigured itself as you said..

.looked like my crawling problem afterwards was account credentials
used, I had to reset these too.

We had this happen to us last week and it caused quite a scare. There's
lots of articles on the web which link to this message and they jump to
some pretty hefty conclusions about what you need to do to fix it.

In our case however it turned out to be quite simple. Somehow,
SharePoint had managed to unconfigure itself. Reconfiguring the
content sources was simply a matter of going into Central
Administration/Services on Server, clicking on your Search Service and
ensure that Use this server for indexing content is checked.

Hey All,

For some reason our search stopped working, gave an error like
Sharepoint cannot connect to the search service. All services were
running, I was mucking around in the back end and I think re-created the
share services search index and it now appears to be working...but it
hasn't indexed any of the files...should this take a particularly long
time?

Creating a Search for Calendars

2010-03-18 Thread Ken Thompson
Hi All,

Still working on my booking centre dilemma which constitutes a separate
calendar for each item available for booking.

I want a quick way for users to find for example a car that is available
in a specified time. At the moment I'm looking at using the Bamboo list
roll up and then the list search tool, basically I want to search a
specified group of calendars in a time frame the user sets and it spits
back links to any calendars that are available for that time.

Is there a better way to be doing this?

Also, a little throw out to any actual SharePoint developers...we are
looking at getting someone to do this properly for us, at the right cost
(my client is a not for profit community organisation). I'm a Systems
EngineerSharePoint aint my thing :-)

RE: Creating a Search for Calendars

2010-03-18 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey Daniel,

I like the idea of using SharePoint search...but if it relies on search
crawling, I don't think it will work enough. The searches would really
need to be in real time, as if someone booked a car for a period of time
and then someone searched for the same period of time, that car would
display as available in the search until it was crawled again, is that
correct?

In terms of doing the search. Another way to do it... however it may be
a bit more heavy is to use actual SharePoint search, create a scope and
go from there... although heavy and is dependent on search crawling the
lists.

The SP List Search, Would be the way I would go, however I've only
evaluated this product and never used it in a prod environment, so can't
really say either way.

RE: Best way to query multiple calendars

2010-02-15 Thread Ken Thompson
Hi Paul,

Currently I am not rolling them up, I am using Kwizcom's Calendar Plus
mini calendars to display booking calendars for all the department cars
in one page. So say for finance, they have their own document centre
site for their cars (a sub site of cars) in which each car has a
calendar. Then on the entry page for that site are mini calendars for
every car, so a user can scroll down the page to find a car that is
available that day quickly (without going to each calendar separately).

I figured rolling up calendars would work to well for a user being
able to just quickly see what car was availablewould I be wrong?

I'm finding that having multiple mini calendars on a page can really
slow its loading time, especially if a user has an older PC. So the main
purpose of creating a query tool, was to more readily display to a user
which cars are available on a specified time / date range.

That being said; I'm open to alternative solutions that might also solve
my problem :-)

MOSS Performance - How to improve?

2009-11-05 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey Guys,

Some of our MOSS pages with larger amounts of information, or with
sources being pulled from large numbers of lists etc perform a little
slow for my liking. I have checked cpu / mem / disk I/O on the server,
especially when accessing pages that are slow to load but nothing
appears to be under any kind of stress what so ever.

It's currently running on a SQL express server on the MOSS machine; will
moving the DB to a separate SQL server improve things? I'm sure it will,
but I just can't see how the performance would increase dramatically if
currently there is no load on cpu / mem / disk I/O on the server it's
running on (Xeon 5500s with plenty of ram).

Anything else I can do to speed up the performance in general, our
installation is pretty stock standard...are there some tweaks that I can
do to it?

Vertical alignment of table content

Wow, so quite on Oz-Moss today, it's creepy!

Anyway, my question is about table content. Basically on a page we have
some tables to organise information and you can control whether that

but I'd like to have it just align itself vertically to the top of the
cell.

Calendar Comparison

2009-08-26 Thread Ken Thompson
Hi All,

I was wondering if there is a way to allow users to compare calendars
next to each other / on top of each other? If they could select which
calendars that would be great also.

Basically, I've created a booking centre which is basically a document
centre site, with sub-document centre sites for collingwood cars st
Kilda cars etc. Beneath these is a calendar for every car, or room etc.
I'm quite happy with the end result, it's very user friendly and works
well. There is only one flaw, users cant compare calendars...say they
just want to find what cars are available, thus I want to allow them to
compare these calendars against each other...or is it possible to do
some kind of query that displays any calendar that has no bookings in a
time they specify?

Might have to get a web part...but we're a non-profit, I have basically 0
budget to spend on this, thus I'm trying to hack ad-hoc solutions for things!
haha

Morning,

Can you use Outlook 2007? It has calendar comparison/overlay built in. Unless
you need to visualise this in the portal itself.. in which case listen to Paul,
not me :-)

Using Outlook, each user would need to visit each calendar, drop down Actions
- Connect to Outlook, then from Outlook use the merge/overlay options from
there. You can pick and choose which calendars easily in there, you just need
to have them connected from SP.

Cheers,

C

Hi Ken,

Sorry if I've said this before. 'm getting a case of déjà vu here.

Bamboo Calendar and List Rollup web parts, when combined, can overlay multiple
calendars and also colour code them. Like all their roll-up web parts it
requires you to select a master list for the view. It's probably cheaper than
developing a custom solution.

And, no, I still don't work for them. ;)

Subject: Calendar Comparison

Hi All,

I was wondering if there is a way to allow users to compare calendars next to
each other / on top of each other? If they could select which calendars that
would be great also.

Basically, I've created a booking centre which is basically a document centre
site, with sub-document centre sites for collingwood cars st Kilda cars
etc. Beneath these is a calendar for every car, or room etc. I'm quite happy
with the end result, it's very user friendly and works well. There is only one
flaw, users cant compare calendars...say they just want to find what cars are
available, thus I want to allow them to compare these calendars against each
other...or is it possible to do some kind of query that displays any calendar
that has no bookings in a time they specify?

Cheers,

Colour Coding Sharepoint Calendars

2009-07-19 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey Guys,

I have been doing some hunting and can find some Web Parts online for
this...which you have to buy. But wondering if there is a simple
(FREE!?) method of colour coding Calendars in sharepoint. We have a
global calendar which has heaps of stuff in it, but has different views
to filter say training events etc. What I would like to do is colour
code every type of filter, so when you are looking at everything you can
differentiate it all a little better.

If you look at the URL for Profile pages you'll see that they all come
off the root My Site, not personal ones.

If you apply a them to the top-level site then this should certainly
affect all Profile pages.

The My Home link is a personal site and the homepage for individual
sites - e.g. domain/personal/myname - again, check the URL and
you'll see what I mean.

Staff Directory - filterable

Exporting a contact list into another contact list

2009-07-06 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey All,

Just setting up a new MOSS installation as a live version after playing
with our development one.

What's the best way to copy a contact list from the old site to the new
site, I'm hoping there is a way to open both up in access / excel etc.
and copy and paste from one to the other. I have tried exporting the
data and leaving it linked to the site, via access...but it doesn't show
all the columns I have in my view which I need to paste into.

Ideas?

Cheers,

Ken Thompson

My Site Themes

2009-07-06 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey All,

Just wondering if there is a way to apply a theme to everyone's My
Site, currently if I apply it only does it for my own site, I want it
to do this globally.

Also there doesn't seem to be any links what so ever to take the user's
back to the main site. Am I missing something?easy way to change
this?

Cheers,

RE: Installation on Windows 2008 x64, require x64 SQL?

2009-07-05 Thread Ken Thompson
Hi Josh,

Thanks for that, yeah that's what I thought and definitely understand
the benefits of running x64...but there are going to be some late nights
this week without having to install a new SQL server on top of
everything :-).

Thanks again.

Hi ken

You will be ok running 64 bit front ends and 32 bit SQL. Performance is
better with 64bit blah blah blah but not an issue otherwise

cheers

Subject: Installation on Windows 2008 x64, require x64 SQL?

Hi Guys,

After some time testing out SharePoint, I am about to install our live
server on a Windows 2008 R2 RC x64 system. I just wanted to know if
installing a x64 version of Sharepoint, requires a x64 SQL server? Not a
major problem if it does...just a pain in the ass installing another SQL
server for it (although would end up migrating old DB server to it also
I guess). We currently run a SQL 2005 x86 server, will that suffice for
my new x64 MOSS 2007 installation?

Late on the year I would like to migrate the SQL to x64...but I want to
do it when we migrate that whole SQL server, not just for MOSS if I can
get away with it.

Cheers,

RE: Installation on Windows 2008 x64, require x64 SQL?

2009-07-05 Thread Ken Thompson
Hey Mark,

Yeah I realise that...that's why I'm putting it on a 2008 x64 now. I do
plan to upgrade our SQL server to x64 later this year, but it would
involve moving all our other databases and testing all of those apps at
the same time...something I don't have time for at the moment :-).

But yeah, definitely planning to make the upgrade path to 2010
compatible.

Cheers,

Hi Ken,

Just thought I'd mention the next version of Sharepoint does require x64
SQL. Might be worth installing it now just to make the upgrade
possible? :-)

Regards,

Mark
