Many thanks for your help Paul and Matthew Definately sounds like we are all thinking the same way as I've checked those things. RE: WSS 3.0 SQL Express 4GB limit
What about SQL2005 embedded (Windows Internal DB/WYukon) rathern than express - no limit AFAIK if you have the right Server (2008) and you have it on the same box as wss3 - it is free with unlimited storage. Also, Express 2008 now comes with a 10GB limit - so RBS may not be needed. And Free EBS (deprecated, but still used widely) providers are out there if you must stay on SQL 2005. However, better off to move to a newer platform if possible, and RBS can get you ouf of an specific DB size issue as long as you plan your backups well and understand its limitations. RE: Variable declared but never used AND passing Guid as an attribute parameter
Catch and re-throw is very expensive (especially if you are bubbling it up - don't code everything this way as it will compound through your code and you'll log it many times). Essentially, make sure it is a true exception and not part of normal expected behaviour. You'd also usually target the specific exceptions you need to deal with as Darren says, rather than the top level class, but we all understand life is sometimes too short and it gets left to be done 'later'! At the very least, you would log the exception details out somewhere and then rethrow, e.g.: catch (Exception ex) { myLogger.Log(ex) ; throw ; } In the case where you know that a certain exception might get thrown and you want to handle it explicitly, then only create Catch blocks for those exceptions. In the case of the code that you've shown, the documetnation tells you that the Font constructor will only ever thrown an ArgumentException, so that's what should be getting caught here, not the general System.Exception: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/164w6x6z.aspx Darren Neimke darren.nei...@live.com _ From: paul.no...@ceosyd.catholic.edu.au To: ozmoss@ozmoss.com Date: Wed, 6 Oct 2010 09:24:37 +1100 Subject: Variable declared but never used AND passing Guid as an attribute parameter Hi all, Please excuse my .NET ignorance but I'm coming at all this from a PHP background and am trying really, really hard to become a real developer. J I'm debugging someone else's code and would greatly appreciate any explanations for the following. 1.The variable 'ex' is declared but never used. This is caused by the following try/catch block but I don't think removing the variable is suitable in this case as it looks like it's supposed to be a fallback in the event the declared font is not available. Would this be better suited to an if/else or switch statement? Any suggestions. private void SetFamilyName(string familyName) { // If the named font is not installed, default to a system font. try { Font font = new Font(this.familyName, 12F); this.familyName = familyName; font.Dispose(); } catch (Exception ex) { this.familyName = System.Drawing.FontFamily.GenericSerif.Name; } } 2.The other question surrounds the (odd?) passing of a Guid from the fldtype XML to the code behind pages. I have never seen this before and don't really understand why it's here at all. Is it required for InteropServices or something? Fldtype_myfield.xml Field Name=FieldTypeClass5b05e101-608a-4265-aa9b-b7932707ac0a/Field Is this correct? I usually put the full class name and assembly info here. myField.cs and myFieldControl.cs namespace Org.SharePoint.fieldName { [CLSCompliant(false)] [Guid(5b05e101-608a-4265-aa9b-b7932707ac0a)] No idea whether the CLSCompliant bit is needed either. :\ Regards, Paul -- Online Developer/Administrator, ICT Projects Team CEO Sydney ___ ozmoss mailing list ozmoss@ozmoss.com http://prdlxvm0001.codify.net/mailman/listinfo/ozmoss ___ ozmoss mailing list ozmoss@ozmoss.com http://prdlxvm0001.codify.net/mailman/listinfo/ozmoss
RE: Web Config Update
I'd agree - very powerful and the way SP does it internally so the best choice. I can't remember the details 3 years later, but there are a few specifics to ensure it happens across the farm. I was going to publish my stuff to codeplex, but there were some similar projects there already so make sure you check those out. If you get stuck ping me an email and I'll send you my webconfigupdater. SPWebConfigModification is the best way and good way. Going forward I am using this class for web.config modifications. Use your feature to add/remove config entries. Just be careful once you use this class to add appsettings web.config, do not manually update the web.config, as in those cases it may not remove the settings added, when you de-activate/uninstall the feature. RE: My Site
Just out of interest my immediate thoughts on this were with regards to security - did you have to do that with elevated privileges in the control, or just accessed by a user allowed to activate the feature? From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of Ishai Sagi Sent: Tuesday, 6 July 2010 1:16 PM To: ozMOSS Subject: Re: My Site spot on. We had to do something similar, so we added a control in the my site master page that would activate a feature that would change the quicklaunch navigation. The control would check if the feature is activated, and if so - do nothing. if not, would show the user the please wait screen, until the feature has finished activating. This way, even existing sites got the customisation (and we had a platform for deploying new features to existing sites without having to run a script). I'd still recommend a script instead - because it does hamper performance for the control to do that every time the page loads - but we had a way around it (the feature also changed master pages to one that did not have the control). I dont remember why we didnt script it - I just know there was a very good reason. RE: Assigned to email alert in custom list
If you can, start with the standard task or issue list (and content type), then add your custom fields. This also gives you the task integration with outlook etc. Otherwise you'll be cooking your own in some way, but better not to reinvent the wheel. As you already have a list and content type, you'd be making a copy, deleting the original, creating your new list so it has the same url as the original and migrating your list data into it and the new content type. You might need a code solution for the one-off migration if there's lots of data, but better than writing and maintaining custom solutions long term if they aren't required. mailto:mike.stringfel...@sevensigma.com.au?subject=sevensigma%20enquiry Mike Stringfellow IS Consultant - http://www.sevensigma.com.au/ Σ Seven Sigma Business Solutions http://www.sevensigma.com.au/ Σ http://www.sevensigma.com.au/ - 0421 428 007 From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of Jason Taylor Sent: Friday, 25 June 2010 10:38 AM To: ozmoss@ozmoss.com Subject: Assigned to email alert in custom list Hi, I have a custom list definition and content type (based in Item) for managing project risks. RE: anyone know of a good reliable picture slide show web part?
You could try a bit of Content Editor webpart code. In the past I've embedded an ms project gantt chart direcly in the CEWP by pulling out that object from the mpp in shared docs - can't find the code though sorry. There a post here on doing something similar for powerpoint, although they moved these blogs and lost many images in the process: http://vspug.com/ajp/2008/10/16/content-editor-web-part-slideshare-net/ I'll have a better look later. Fairly broad request. I assume you’ve already done a Google search and not found what you’re looking for? Were you after commercial ($$) version, free solution, or source code you can modify yourself? Did you want the web part to reference an existing image library and reference additional list item fields? Were you after a slick-multimedia-version-with-transtitional-bells-and-whistles-on-top? The SilverLight SlideShow web part probably covers all those bases. But the downside with any plugin reliance is that the end user will need to download it if they don’t already have it installed. http://www.sharepointevolved.com/Pages/Slideshow.aspx If you’re happy to go with a lighter solution, these may also apply: http://weblogs.asp.net/wesleybakker/archive/2008/12/16/sharepoint-slideshow-webpart.aspx http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/HA011233351033.aspx Regards, Paul Online Developer, ICT CEO Sydney From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of skrapesh...@silverchain.org.au Sent: Tuesday, 27 April 2010 2:01 PM To: ozmoss@ozmoss.com Subject: anyone know of a good reliable picture slide show web part?
