I wonder if anybody on list owns this speaker from Bose. It costs $300.
I saw one briefly last evening at the Verizon store, as I was
purchasing my new iPhone and was pretty impressed with the sound, given
the size of the box. I really haven't looked all that much in to this
sort of speaker. I have an older dock that works with the older style
iPhone connectors, and it really sounds pretty good, but my better half
has sort of taken it over for use in his class-room. So I'd like to
know from those who have experienced this equipment, what did you
think, and are there other units you'd recommend as good competition? I
like the size and the volume and depth of sound, but am not thrilled
with the $300 price tag, naturally.

Re: Bose Soundlink 3

2014-05-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
As much as Bose users won't like to hear it, you won't find a Bose system or
product mentioned in an audiophile magazine but that's nice to say their
products are cheap, nasty and rubbish because that just isn't the case.

The products are reasonable at worst and the company is very good to deal with,
or it is here at any rate.

I've been able to try before I buy the products I have in my own home, there
was one product I didn't like and I told Bose so after the trial, they made
arrangements to pick the product up from me and I was given a refund of the
purchase price, no questions asked.

I had a problem with my Bose Soundlink Air and a pickup of the old and delivery
of the new replacement was arranged, again no questions asked, no hitches etc,
I just had to identify who I was.

I have to say that the Jambox sounds good but to describe it as a toy is just a
little harsh.

The other thing I would say about your speakers is that providing a sample file
is never a true reflection of what the actual quality of a speaker system is
since the listener is playing the sound through their own system and not
hearing it through the speakers that have been sampled.

Here's a sample of what my Polk Audio bookshelf speakers sound like, they're

You're absolutely right, the Bose Wave Radio does sound a little odd but then
again, the Soundlink - or at least the Soundlink Air I have - is a bigger unit
than the Bose Wave radio, I have a Bose Wave Radio II and its very nice
sounding considering its size but it has many disappointments which could put a
lot of people off buying one.

Thankfully the Bose Wave III Radio is now available and I'm told that many of
the problems in the Wave II have been addressed and corrected.

For example, the Wave II has a nice sound for its size but the AM radio sounds
absolutely dreadful, sensitivity is okay.

FM is very average but at least you can plug an external FM antenna into the
radio and do something about the reception.

Re: Bose Soundlink 3

2014-05-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
that's true!

As I explained earlier, you have more band width at your disposal and the data
for audio isn't compressed thus you're affectively receiving a digital stream,
similar to what the digital output of a CD Player would send.

There are of course a few things to bare in mind when using AirPlay, there's a
slight delay between tracks and not all Wi-Fi networks are equal, if your
network is competing with half a dozen others in your area then their can be
some problems.

batteries For Your Audio Goodies

2014-05-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Just looking at the 3rd generation of Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable HI-NH
batteries that were released last year and specs seem impressive.

I have a supply of Eneloop batteries which I bought 5 years ago, at that time
the specs for the batteries stated that they were low discharge and would still
hold 90% of their charge after a year.

The specs for the third generation have changed somewhat, they now state that
the batteries will hold 70% of charge for 5 years.

I've had a very good run with Sanyo Eneloop batteries and I have to report that
their seems to be little if any of the old memory effect that we associate with
Rechargeable cells.

This means that if you have partly drained batteries, you don't have to worry
about charging them up to full capacity and then experiencing limited life for
the next cycle.

These batteries are rated between 1800-2000MAH, certainly not the highest
capacity AA Batteries on the market however its been my experience that the
higher the capacity the bigger the self discharge factor.

file is never a true reflection of what the actual quality of a speaker
system is since the listener is playing the sound through their own system
and not hearing it through the speakers that have been sampled.

As much as Bose users won't like to hear it, you won't find a Bose system or
product mentioned in an audiophile magazine but that's nice to say their
products are cheap, nasty and rubbish because that just isn't the case.

The products are reasonable at worst and the company is very good to deal
with, or it is here at any rate.

I've been able to try before I buy the products I have in my own home, there
was one product I didn't like and I told Bose so after the trial, they made
arrangements to pick the product up from me and I was given a refund of the
purchase price, no questions asked.

I had a problem with my Bose Soundlink Air and a pickup of the old and
delivery of the new replacement was arranged, again no questions asked, no
hitches etc, I just had to identify who I was.

I wonder if anybody on list owns this speaker from Bose. It costs $300.
I saw one briefly last evening at the Verizon store, as I was
purchasing my new iPhone and was pretty impressed with the sound,
given the size of the box. I really haven't looked all that much in
to this sort of speaker. I have an older dock that works with the
older style iPhone connectors, and it really sounds pretty good, but
my better half has sort of taken it over for use in his class-room.
So I'd like to know from those who have experienced this equipment,
what did you think, and are there other units you'd recommend as good
competition? I like the size and the volume and depth of sound, but
am not thrilled with the $300 price tag, naturally.

thankfully I've got an open mind and appreciate Bose for what they are, they're
certainly not the worst.

Overpriced? Well I'm not sure that I agree with that comment either, its a
general statement really so I'll try to explain further.

With the Soundlink III for example, that product consistently scorse very good
reviews and comment yet its not that much more expensive than the Logitech UE
Boombox which has a few problems.

New Developments With iTunes

It seems that iTunes will now play FLAC audio files?

If this is the case then its a development I wasn't aware of not that I care

have these days.

ITunes could play files since whenever, not sure how you didn't no
that but its easy to find out, if you don't have it, download and
explore and you will see that sooner than later.

Hi!
Are these speakers very small.
I'd really like to have small speakers to take with me sometimes.
Ofcourse with as good quality as possible.

Okay, let's make one point clear.

Its not I who says that AirPlay sounds better than Bluetooth, its a fact that
AirPlay transfers data in a lossless mode whereas Bluetooth - as a rule -
doesn't have the band width available to do so.

Bluetooth 4 o course is the exception here and - as yet - I'm not able to say
whether the Bose Soundlink III uses Bluetooth 4, my suspicions are that the
Soundlink III will at least use Bluetooth 2.0 or some possible variant of the
same, would be nice if the SoundLink III used Bluetooth 3.0 at the very
least, I'm doing some research on this now and will get back to the list if I
 find out anything.
Yes, my syster Johana has one. It' epic! Real christal clear. But since Dain
says Air Play is better then Blue Tooth then I might want to check that out.

I wonder if anybody on list owns this speaker from Bose. It costs $300.
I saw one briefly last evening at the Verizon store, as I was purchasing my
new iPhone and was pretty impressed with the sound, given the size of the
box. I really haven't looked all that much in to this sort of speaker. I
have an older dock that works with the older style iPhone connectors, and it
really sounds pretty good, but my better half has sort of taken it over for
use in his class-room. So I'd like to know from those who have experienced
this equipment, what did you think, and are there other units you'd
recommend as good competition? I like the size and the volume and depth of
sound, but am not thrilled with the $300 price tag, naturally.

2014-05-25 Thread John Gurd
I've got the Bose Soundlink Mini for my iPhone and I really like it. For
such a small speaker the bass is amazingly fulfilling. I have an Azatom
Stealth Air speaker in another room and I gave up using the Airplay
capability with it because of the inherent lag. Luckily it has Bluetooth as
well. As portable speakers neither are hifi but they are good enough to make
my iPhone sound good. The Mini however is a fraction of the size and
although I'm not overly fond of Bose in general it has just sucha lovely
tone with music. I tried using it with my PC as well for non music use in
combination with my wireless keyboard but JAWS was unworkable with it. The
problem was that the Mini appears to partially power down when there's no
sound input resulting in the sound from Eloquence being clipped at the
beginning of speech. Pity, I had high hopes of being able to alternate
between my iPhone and PC from another room with just the Mini as output.

Overpriced? Well I'm not sure that I agree with that comment either, its a
general statement really so I'll try to explain further.

With the Soundlink III for example, that product consistently scorse very
good reviews and comment yet its not that much more expensive than the
Logitech UE Boombox which has a few problems.

As much as Bose users won't like to hear it, you won't find a Bose
system or product mentioned in an audiophile magazine but that's nice
to say their products are cheap, nasty and rubbish because that just isn't
the case.

The products are reasonable at worst and the company is very good to
deal with, or it is here at any rate.

I've been able to try before I buy the products I have in my own home,
there was one product I didn't like and I told Bose so after the
trial, they made arrangements to pick the product up from me and I was
given a refund of the purchase price, no questions asked.

I had a problem with my Bose Soundlink Air and a pickup of the old and
delivery of the new replacement was arranged, again no questions
asked, no hitches etc, I just had to identify who I was.

As I explained earlier, you have more band width at your disposal and the
data for audio isn't compressed thus you're affectively receiving a digital
stream, similar to what the digital output of a CD Player would send.

There are of course a few things to bare in mind when using AirPlay, there's
a slight delay between tracks and not all Wi-Fi networks are equal, if your
network is competing with half a dozen others in your area then their can be
 some problems.

been saving to buy some floor standing Polk Audio speakers for the lounge to
connect to the Denon aVR2113 but never mind, found an alternate stockest.
