When I installed it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus. Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need to check to see where it's putting the files it converts. It's completely accessible with my Window Eyes 8.4; almost as though it was written that way, although I don't know that for sure. It's also simple and fast. There is a five files at a time limit on the free version, but that is easy to work around. You can select and open many more than five files and then convert five at a time until you get them all. However, for convenience, and because I think they deserve it for writing such a simple and accessible product, I am probably going to buy it. It says that it will also extract audio from DVD's and video files, although I haven't tried this yet. If that works as simply and accessibly as the audio conversions I've done so far, then that will make it even more worth the price. Thanks for putting me onto this. Oh, by the way, Dane, VBR is not on the list of filetypes that Switch will convert to, so I guess I will continue with M4A. What are some ways to take audio from old tape or cassette sources to the pc? Using XP and at present have the free Winamp as wel as Goldwave. Do I have what I need on the pc side? And in any case, why buy a USB turntable? Most of the older models and a lot of the newer models are far better than some of those USB cheap things I've seen, plastic tone arms for one thing so really again, if you're serious about putting record to computer then buy a proper turntable that plugs into an amp, you can get preempts if you need them for your sound card and then? Wind noise question
Ok, I admit to being kind of disheartened at my apparent inability to record decently in hostile environments. The other week I was outdoors on boats and para-sailing with Olympus DM520 happily in hand. Frankly the resulting recordings sound awful because of the wind noise. Now this tip isn't going to be for everyone as not everyone wears hearing instruments which can be used with induction loops but if you do? Well here's a handy way to use your instruments to great effect when sorting out one of the very few functions of the Zoom H1 which isn't accessible. I'm talking about the Bit and Sample rate of the file you're recording, this is changed in Standby mode by using the fast forward and rewind buttons, rewind takes you back through the cycle whilst fast forward takes you forward through the cycle of bit and sample rates. When recording using Wave Broadcast format you cycle through 44.1KHZ 16 Bit, 48KHZ 24 bit and so on right the way up to 96KHZ 24 and back to 44.1KHZ 16 bit so how to tell where you are. Well turn your instruments to pick up induction loops and put the recorder near them. Now start recording, you'll be able to hear the recorder as it writes to the SD card and the slower the rate of writing then the small the sample size, 44.1KHZ 16 bit has the Zoom H1 writing to the SD card about every half second whilst 96KHZ 24 bit has the H1 writing to the SD card every sixth of a second or so. Just thought others may find this helpful as I do, still haven't worked out a way to set the date and time for date/time stamping of recordings but I have to admit to not trying too hard, after all! one can change all that when the files are copied from the H1 to your computer. I had your exact question in mind in explaining the use of the autogain feature in GW 5.57. I have never seen a db level indicator on the title bar, but I had thought the purpose of the autogain feature was to make the gain level uniform throughout the audio file regardless of the varying sound levels in the recording. If this is true, the need to know db levels is obviated. If not, then I will either have to do some poking around to see if I can find a db level indicator. IN my case, most of the video attributes are set to blank as a preventive remedy to cure a conflict between JAWS and the GW video intercept manager which was causing system tie-ups after about 20 to 25 minutes of normal operation. The GoldWave autogain function works very well in maximizing and leveling gain throughout the audio recording. To effectuate autogain do the following 1. Type ctrl+a to ensure the entire audio file is selected. 2. Type alt+c to launch the effects menu. 3. Type u (without quotes) for the volume menu. 4. Your first choice should be autogain so type Enter to bring up a dialog box. 5. In the autogain dialog box you will find a list of 7 preset options which include adjust to 50 percent, default, ffast gain update, maximize voice with high noise, medium gain update, peak reducer, and slow gain update. Select a preset option with the up and down arrow keys and tab 3 times to preview and listen before making your permanent choice. 6. When satisfied with your autogain preset choice, tab once and hit space on the stop preview button and tab to OK and press the space bar. Winamp question again
I have this one file I downloaded from a torrent, (happens to be the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1956 and it came down as an AVI file. Now my HP laptop with some older version of Winamp on it plays this file fine, but my desktop, now with Winamp 5.58 does not and has not. I've been able to play it in my old WMP ver. 9, but even there I can't fast forward or rewind. I tried k-lite but no joy of course I may not be configuring it correctly. So I went to google where I found a vdamp plug in. Put that in and the file showed as playing but still no sound. Now I've checked and AVI is checked. Winamp opens, its just that it stops dead. Frankly, since it plays on the laptop I'm afraid to upgrade it there though I get hounded. I agree that putting them there isn't the ideal solution, but I have just spent some time trying to change it and like you, can't find how to. Perhaps someone else can say if they have found a way. But when I work out, I still prefer to have some rock music in one ear bud. I have a copy of EZ CD/DVD Creator, a fairly recent build, and the designer sent me a file he said would merge to two channels for me. But it involves a file extension that neither I nor my Windows XP Home has ever heard of, and I can't run the file and get a list of mono preferences for bps rate to appear beneath the stereo output options. Can anyone help? It's kind of primitive, audio-wise, to go back to mono like early Beatles records, but I gotta do it. RE: Winamp question
Well the simple fact is that AVI does not ppear as a supported file type in 5.72 whereas it does in 5.32. In fact, there are only 61 file types with which to associate as opposed to 67 on the earlier one. So it would appear that I'm hosed. I wouldn't even mind except that I can't control Windows Media player, I.E. it won't fast forward or rewind. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Joe Paton Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2010 1:54 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: RE: Winamp question At 19:07 20/05/2010, you wrote: Winamp opens as it should, the AVI file just doesn't play. BTW, I don't know that using a $DTB folder doesn't work. If you want to try what works for me you can. Otherwise, maybe someone else can help you. As I said before, I don't use a $DTB folder. Both on my blank NLS cartridge and my USB flash drive, I extract my BARD books directly into their root directories. This means I get one folder per book, and these folders are in the root directory. I also have an Audio+Podcasts folder in the root directory. I drop my MP3's into this folder. I have a standard player, so when I hold down the play/pause key I end up in my bookshelf, and I can use my forward and rewind keys to select the user's guide, any of the books I have and Audio Files. It sounds like you have the advanced player, so you can get to the user's guide with the info key. If I select the Audio Files entry in my book shelf, I hear the first MP3 start to play. Now I can use the forward and rewind buttons to move through that MP3 file and jump to the next file in the folder. Like I said this works for me. The majority of iPods and MP3 players that are on the market, aren't blind user friendly. If it works, it works. There is an old saying that goes, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. I'm glad the NLS player is a versatile MP3 player for blind people, if I can call it that. If you look at the previous thread, you will learn that play back equipment that was only mint for talking books only, was used to listen to music. That kind of a thing has been going on for more then 7 decades. The talking book program was introduced in 1931, right along with the special machines that were designed for it. But even then, a group of kids found out that, they could play their music on it. From the 1930's right up to the late 1960's, hardly anybody had money to buy good record players and such. So If you came by records, you played them on whatever you could get your hands on. Here it is 79 years later, people are still having tuff times. So If you come by it, and if you can get it to work for you, be faithful for it! My best regards. I for one have no problems funding the NLS, the Talking Books program and the move to a digital format. As a US tax payer though, I would not be happy having my tax dollars spent to pay for and support a music or MP3 player for the blind. blind consumers, like everyone else, have other options for music and MP3 players. If this needs to be subsidized for the blind then I think that would fall under a different program. The NLS also needs to travel a thin line here. I doubt very much their funding from Congress included any kind of development or support for a generic MP3 player. I'd hate to have this funding jeopardized because the general public found out it was being used to fund the development and support of high quality MP3 players for the blind. Remember too that the patrons of the NLS service with computers and the desire to play MP3's are a minority of their overall patron population. I think the NLS official no support statement for anything other than an NLS book an an NLS cartridge is appropriate. Since, as far as I can tell, they aren't prohibiting anyone from using a flash drive, or playing MP3's on the player, there's nothing wrong with users sharing this information and their findings. I agree the player seems to be able to handle music and was made with high quality audio components, but I'm not sure that still isn't appreciated when listening to spoken recordings. I prefer listening to the same book on my DTBM over my booksense, and I assume this is in part due to the better sound quality. I believe the NLS also has music and other recordings in their collection. I also wouldn't be surprised if this was in part to anticipate the availability of multimedia content (voice with music) in the future. A book on Mozart that also included some performances for example. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 3/25/2010 11:48 AM, Joe wrote: Here's something to think about. Its far superior to the plex talk and other player recorders that are ridiculously over priced for what they are. I've never really heard a definitive answer for that one; all I know is: people used to do it all the time (played their records on the talking book machines)..now it might be a thing where..the needles were bigger..and the grooves in the old talking book records were bigger; I don't know for sure..but oh yeah..playing record albums on talking book machines was a practice that people did a lot! I'm also told that there are some major software upgrades for Victor coming in the near future, one of which will allow you to store your recordings in a different format such as wave for transfer straight to a PC or Mac and that's about time too! and this has been my major gripe about the player from day one - particularly given that I use a Mac most of the time and there's no way of converting files from the Victor's format to something standard with the Mac, this should fix the problem. The other slight annoyance I have with the Victor Reader Stream is its incredibly slow rate of transfer using USB cable and I'd be interested to hear an explanation from Humanware as to why this is, I can only hope that transfer speeds are faster on the Book Sense. If you're prepared to be a little adaptive then the problem can of course be solved by purchasing a memory card reader but make sure you read the manual first so you know what goes into what folder on the card, how to arrange things etc. -- Dane Trethowan From Melton Victoria Australia mailto:grtd...@internode.on.net Phone United Kingdom 02032874641 Phone Australia :0390058589 Phone United States :8159261869 Fax (+61 3) 9743 7954 Mobile/SMS +61 438 571201 MSN grtd...@dane-trethowan.net skype:grtdane12 Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/grtdane blog: http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com -- Dane Trethowan From Melton Victoria Australia mailto:grtd...@internode.on.net Phone United Kingdom 02032874641 Phone Australia :0390058589 Phone United States :8159261869 Fax (+61 3) 9743 7954 Mobile/SMS +61 438 571201 MSN grtd...@dane-trethowan.net skype:grtdane12 Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/grtdane blog: http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4713 (20091223) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4715

Also the pocket has certain automatic recording settings for environments like conferences, etc. And it can play material in different formats as well and .txt and html files at this stage. An audio editing beginner
I'm starting from ground zero insofar as this kind of thing is concerned. At some point, I would like to put some of my records and cassettes onto the PC and I'd also like to be able to manipulate the recordings I've got on my dm520; I'm sure there are other audio tasks, oh yes, ripping cd's to a more useable format as well. The recorders' built-in audio cues can be used to enter the Time Date settings. These same cues can be used to set Timer Recording and Alarm functions as well. Using the Keypad When executing a menu function that requires time and date setting, use the buttons on the recorder's four-way keypad to enter the settings. The settings are hour, minute, month, day, and year. Press the PLUS (UP) and MINUS (DOWN) buttons, respectively to increase and decrease the values. Press the REWIND (LEFT) and FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) buttons to move between variables. Press the OK/MENU button to complete the set-up and start the clock. Depending on the year of release for the machine, Each time and date variable has a baseline value, from which it is possible to calculate the number of times the PLUS (UP) or MINUS (DOWN) buttons must pressed to reach a particular value. On the DS-50, The baseline settings for hour, minutes, month, day, and year are respectively 12 AM, 00, 1M, 1D, and 2007Y. On the DM-520, the settings work the same, however the default year is 2009 rather than 2007, because the DM-520 wasn't released until 2009. I haven't properly explored, but I imagine the DS-71 will default to 2009 as well. The values appear on the recorder screen as shown below: When setting time and date variables the recorder emits distinct audio cues to determine that the variables are being changed. Pressing the PLUS (UP) button causes the recorder to emit a high-pitched beep. Pressing the MINUS (DOWN) button elicits a low-pitched beep. When a baseline value is reached from either direction, the audio cue becomes a chirp. The DS-50 (and others) digital voice recorder has a Voice Guide that speaks the menu items. However, it cannot speak the time and date or file names. When the DS-50 recorder is turned on for the first time , the Voice Guide function is enabled. If the Voice Guide is disabled, use the following steps to enable it: 1.Turn the recorder on by sliding the POWER/HOLD button downward. 2.Launch the menu by holding down the OK/MENU button in the center of the four-way keypad for 1 second. 3.Press the MINUS (DOWN) button 13 times to arrive at the Voice Guide setting in the menu. 4.Press the FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) button on the keypad twice. 5.Press the OK/MENU button in the center of the keypad once to enable the Voice Guide. 6.Press the REWIND (LEFT) button on the keypad once to return to the menu. Note that Details for activating the voice guidance on other machines, will differ. ***Setting the Time and Date 1.on the DS-50, If the Voice Guide has just been enabled and returned to the menu, press the MINUS (DOWN) button 7 times to arrive at the Time Date setting. The Voice Guide will speak, Time and Date Setting. 2.If the menu on the DS-50 has been newly opened, press the PLUS (UP) button four times to arrive at the Time Date setting. [If you are using a different model, such as the DM-520 or DS-71, get to the time and date settings, and follow the below steps.] 3.Press the FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) button to open the Time Date menu. The first variable to set is the hour. Press the PLUS (UP) button or MINUS (DOWN) button until the recorder chirps instead of beeps. The chirp means the hour variable has been set to 12 AM. 4.Press the PLUS (UP) button the number of times necessary to arrive at the correct hour value. Remember: The baseline value for hour is 12 AM. Therefore the first 11 button presses represent AM values. It may be quicker to press the MINUS

The model of the Soni mic is ESM719. As I've said, I'm happy with it. Now while there is I think really good stereo separation, there is no doubt that two more separated mics would do better; you just have to know that there is some constraint due to space. Also, I wish there was a wind screen included. Nonetheless, it would seem to be a good solution and now I just have to learn how to edit and how to judge proper volume. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Casey Sent: Wednesday, December 09, 2009 7:44 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: What is a good stereo mic for the DM-520 Hi can you pelase send me those audio files of the traffic. The truth is that there are no scripts and there never have been. All we've had on this subject is somebody should do something or there must be something. So don't hold your breath. Are there any sound cards left out there that one can actually control? I really think we need to boycott Creative as their no good foreign tech support has been worse than useless. I'm sure it's a fine card but if you can't control it then it can be the best card in the world but its essentially worthless. The short answer is I'm not going to sell anything until and unless I have a workable alternative installed and working. But I'd avoid these rag heads at all costs. RE: continuing saga of creative labs soundcard
I've again been on the phone to Creative Labs and they say that there is no such thing as a raad text on screen option. I was further told', I might add in a rather hostile manor by the obviously non-American tech person, that this product was designed for the majority. I would ask that from her on we stop buying creative products as clearly they have no interest in addressing our needs. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Sunday, December 06, 2009 9:47 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: continuing saga of creative labs soundcard Problem is I can't find any settings anywhere that would fit this bill. You have been getting good advice on this group from those who have the card. First, if you installed creative audio update from the disk, you can run it if your on line and get the latest drivers for the card. Creative audio update should select the correct ones for you if you run it. If not you can do it manually. If you are sure you already have the proper drivers, the problem may be the setting that says something like read text on screen. I can't remember where that setting is but its in there and before I checked it, I had the same problems you did. After I checked it, everything read perfectly. Continuing saga of Creative Labs.
No, I have not made any progress. I unloaded all things soundblaster and Creative and still the card works, apparently using windows generic drivers. Yet I still can't get access to the advanced controls. Pam sent an email from the web page on my behalf and of course there was no contact so today I googled and found an Oklahoma City phone number where I got absolutely nowhere. I did get the corporate office phone number in the san Jose area, but got no answer from their operator in spite of being on the phone listening to it ring for probably half an hour. So I just started punching in extentions until I got an answer, someone named Breanna. I expressed my concdern about a whole population being shut out of the Creative Labs product. Will I get a return call? Probably not. Clearly, this is a company that does not deserve our patronage. Please reconsider if you are thinking about buying Creative Labs. RE: Continuing saga of Creative Labs.
Again, you're saying that my/our money isn't as good as the next persons. If you'd bother to Google, you'd see that I am not the only person having problems with Creative. As of now they appear to be a derelict company. So far we've had one person claiming that her product works but she wwill not offer us the steps she takes to make it so, which in my estimation means that she may very possibly be fabricating. Then we have somebody else saying essentially that there must be a solution. I have a right to warn people against buying what for us as blind people may in fact be garbage. If you don't like it, throw me off the list. I've spen three solid days trying to find a workaround. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of DJ DOCTOR P Sent: Thursday, December 03, 2009 5:28 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Continuing saga of Creative Labs. High all list members, In the world of electronics, there is no such word as the word can't. Where there is a will, there is a way. I had an old computer that had an old M AUDIO sound card in it. I couldn't get at the tone controls for the world using Jaws 6.1. But I found a work around, I got someone in Daytona Beach Florida, to write scrip's for me to make the sound card do what I wanted it to do. The same principle very well, could be applied to the Creative Lab sound cards. Yes I agree the manufacturers should listen to the people that use their products, but that doesn't always happen. This is why we have to be faithful for the people that are smart enough to find work arounds for us to use. Try looking for a suitable solution before you give upon the problem. If I ever buy a Creative product again it'll be to son
I have officially had enough. I had a sighted friend over today and we found that there is just no way I can adjust the properties of this sound card. There's this thing called 'entertainment mode and all the controls are there and just plain not accessible. I really can't ask for my money back from the manufacturer because the product is not defective, I just can't use it. So for me at least, Creative means crap. To get into any of the settings menus on the DM520, just hold the middle button in, the one in the center of the four. Then just go up and down to what you want and it will speak.
