Hi Hank,
see the recording section of this guide for details of the recording
settings of Audacity:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.2.0-Guide.html

To record the sound that is sent to your usb headphones, you need to set
the audio interface to wasapi, and then set the recording device to an item
which will be something like usb speakers, and have loopback as the last
word in its name. In addition, set the number of recording channels to 2
(stereo).

2017-11-28 Thread David Bailes
Hi Aiden,
you may well already be aware of the following, but I thought it was worth
checking.
The stereo mix input provided by the realtek chip allows you to record the
audio output of the realtek chip. Are you sending any audio to the realtek
speaker output? The usb headset is a different sound device, so any audio
sent to your headphones won't be included in the realtek's stereo mix.

A number of recording programs would allow you to record the output of your
headphones using wasapi loopback.

David.

Re: Audacity 2.2.0 has been released

2017-11-04 Thread David Bailes
Hi Don,
In the case of Audacity, the only two differences between using the
installer and the portable version are:
1. If you use the installer, the installed version is automatically
available to all users on the computer.
2. The portable version does not include a copy of the manual. However, you
can download this separately if you wish.

David.

original message:
I have a related question. I note that there is a full install version and
a portable version of Audacity. I have noted that many programs have
both a full
install and a portable version. So I conclude that there must be some advantage
of the full install over the portable version of a program. If this is
correct, just what is the advantage specifically in the case of Audacity?

Audacity 2.2.0 has been released

2017-11-03 Thread David Bailes
For a summary of new features see:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/new_features_in_this_release.html

One of the new features is that clips are now accessible for users of
screen readers.

For Windows users, these are the direct links for Audacity 2.2.0:
1. The Installer version:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.2.0.exe
2. The portable version:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.2.0.zip

I've updated by Jaws guide to Audacity for version 2.2.0, and it's
available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.2.0-Guide.html

As previously, nearly all of this guide is also applicable to users of NVDA
and Window-Eyes.

Unfortunately, there is not a version of Audacity 2.2.0 which is usefully
accessible with VoiceOver on Macs. The most recent accessible version on
Macs is still the screen reader version of Audacity 2.1.1:

Audacity and Jaws on Windows 10 Creators update

2017-08-01 Thread David Bailes
If the audio editor Audacity is used with Jaws on Windows 10 Creators
update (version 1703), then Audacity can crash. Fortunately, there are no
problems with other screen readers, so you can use NVDA, for example, until
the problem is fixed.

Freedom scientific are already aware of the issue,

Audacity 2.1.3 released

2017-03-20 Thread David Bailes
just to let any Audacity users on this list, that version 2.1.3 has just
been released. For the new features in this release, see this page of the
manual:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/new_features_in_this_release.html

Included in these new features is that labels are now easier to use for
users of screen readers. Please note that the default shortcut for
"play/stop and set cursor" has been changed to the letter X - it was shift
+ a in previous versions of Audacity.

There is a guide to Audacity 2.1.3 which is written for Jaws users, and
nearly all of it is also applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes:

c. Under File I select Export and in the save as drop down I pick "other"
d. I tab to file typw and set it to .waV

Audacity 2.1.1 released

2015-07-18 Thread David Bailes
Audacity 2.1.1 has been released, and can be downloaded from the Audacity
website:
http://audacityteam.org/

A direct link to the download is:
http://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/audacity-win-2.1.1.exe

I've updated my guide to Audacity for Jaws users, and it's available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.1.1-Guide.html

The guide is also nearly all applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes.

Audacity 2.1.1 includes the following new features which are relevant to the
users of screen readers:
1. The transport status is now the first item in the status bar. This tells you
whether Audacity is stopped, playing or recording, and whether it is Paused.
2. There are four new playback keystrokes for checking a selected time range.
3. There are two new playback keystrokes to help with aligning and pasting.
4. You can now move to the first track or the last track by pressing ctrl+home
or ctrl+end respectively.
5. You can now assign shortcuts to the commands for moving a track up, down, to
top, or to bottom. The names of the commands are move focused track up, down,
to top, and to bottom.

In the Introduction of the Jaws guide, there's a sub section on new features,
where either details or links to the details of these new features are given.

Re: Audacity help needed

2015-04-14 Thread David Bailes
Hi,
In audacity to select some audio so that you can apply an effect, you have to
select one or more tracks, and a time range. So in your case where you want to
apply an effect to all the audio in one of the tracks, then:
1. Make sure that the desired track is selected, and the other one is not
selected. (pressing enter toggles whether a track is selected).
2. Select a time range which covers all the audio in the selected track. To do
this press J to move the cursor to the start of the audio in the select track,
and then press shift+K to move the end of the selected time range to the end of
the audio in the selected track.
3. apply the effect.

Note that you can also change speed using the sliding time scale/pitch shift
effect, if you set the initial and final tempo change settings to the same
value. This effect produces better quality audio, but takes longer.

When you say picture fact broken, what do you mean by this?

For your information there's an Audacity4Blind mailing list on freelists:
http://www.freelists.org/list/audacity4blind
And there'a also a guide to Audacity for jaws users, which is also nearly all
applicable to users of nvda and window-eyes:

Re: Audacity questions

2014-12-05 Thread David Bailes
Hi,
assuming this 10 mins which you want to delete is in the middle of the audio
(that is, not at the end or the beginning):
1. Make sure the track is selected. Pressing enter toggles whether the track is
selected.
2. Move the cursor to the beginning of the section you want to delete. One way
of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, and then press shift+a at
the desired position. The latter keystroke stops playback and moves the cursor
to that position. Note that during playback you can use the left and right
arrow keys to jump backwards or forwards by small increments and shift + left
and right arrow keys to jump by larger increments.
3. Start playback again, and when you get to the end of the section which you
want to delete press the right bracket key (which is two to the right of the p
key). This sets the end of the selected time range to where you pressed the
right bracket key.
4. Press the delete key, to delete the selected audio.
5. Export the audio to a new file (export audio is on the file menu).

Additional notes:
If the section of audio which you wanted to delete was the the beginning, then:
1. make sure the track is selected.
2. Move the cursor to the end of the section you want to delete.
3. press shift+home to set the start of the selected time range to the start.
4. press delete.

If the section of the audio is at the end:
1. make sure the track is selected.
2. move the cursor to the start of the section you want to delete.
3. press shift+end to set the end of the selected time range to the end.
4. press delete.

Re: noise reduction with Audacity

2014-06-16 Thread David Bailes
Hi Dave,
the noise removal effect in audacity involves two steps. The first is to get a
noise profile, and the second is to use that for noise removal.
Step one - get noise profile.
1. Select a small section of audio where there's only background noise. To do
this first make sure the track is selected (pressing enter toggles whether the
track is selected). Then select a time range which contains only background
noise. One way of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, press left
bracket (next to letter p) where you want the start of the time range, press
right bracket where you want the end of the time range, and press spacebar to
stop. If you now press spacebar, this will playback only the time range, and so
you can check that you've got just background noise.
2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens.
3. press the get noise profile button. The dialog closes.

Step two - use the profile for noise removal.
1. Select all the audio. You can do this by pressing ctrl+a.
2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens.
3. There are a number of settings for noise removal in the dialog, but to
accept the defaults, just tab to the ok button and press it.

There is more info on noise removal on this page from the manual:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/noise_removal.html

Hi Alexandra,
In Windows vista and later you can do the following - not sure about xp. Tab to
the seek slider. Pressing LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW moves the playback backward
or forward by one twentieth of the length of the track. If you add SHIFT or
CTRL to these keystrokes, then the distance moved becomes one four hundredth or
a fifth of the length of the track respectively.
If you're using vista, then you can get to the seek slider quicker by pressing
ctrl+tab one or more times.

RE: Audacity Versus Reaper for Multitrack Recording

2013-11-28 Thread David Bailes
Hi Ted,
concerning the latency in Audacity.
There is a setting for a latency correction in audacity. In the preferences
dialog, in the recording category, there's a latency correction edit box. The
default value of the correction is -130ms, and the more negative the value, the
larger the correction.
There are a couple of ways of adjusting this value so that tracks line up
correctly.
1. The first is just to use trial and error. You don't need to get it more
accurate than about 10ms.
2. The second is to use a method such as the one described in a guide to
audacity for jaws users, which is available at:
http://goo.gl/Qi2CeD
In the recording section of this guide, there's a sub section on latency
correction.

In addition to these two methods, I'm aware that someone is working on a
plug-in to partly automate the measurement of the latency, but I'm not sure
when this will be available,

David.

original message:
Personally, I could not get tracks to sync up together so that they sounded
correctly like they would in sonar or reaper. If someone could tell me how
to make tracks line up the way they are supposed to, I would give it a try
again.

For example, while recording vocals, my second harmony part would not stay
with the first, and I did not know how to make it line up.

That is my two cents worth.

Audacity 2.0.5

2013-10-22 Thread David Bailes
Audacity 2.0.5 has been released. One of the recent new features which is
available if you’re using Windows Vista or later, is that using the WASAPI
audio interface you can record the audio being sent to a playback device even
if your sound card doesn’t support “Stereo Mix”. I've updated my guide to
Audacity for Jaws users, and it's available here:

Nearly all the guide is also applicable to users of NVDA and Window-Eyes.

Hi Petro,
yes, there's a portable version available at:
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable

concerning recording a microphone and the audio going to a playback device, for
example a screen reader. Audacity only helps you with recording the audio going
to a playback device, in the absence of stereo mix.
To record the microphone and a screen reader, you need to send to audio from
the microphone to the playback device. There are a couple of ways of doing this.
1. Your sound card may be able to do this. If it can, all you need to do is
unmute the microphone input for that playback device. In vista and later, on
the playback devices page of the sound dialog, open the properties dialog of
the playback device, go to the levels page, and you should find an appropriate,
set of controls for the microphone input: a slider, a mute button, and a
balance button.
2. If you have windows 7 or later, then the audio from the microphone can be
sent to the playback device using software. The disadvantage of this method is
that there's an annoying lag. To do this,
on the recording devices page of the Sound dialog, open the properties dialog
of the microphone, go to the listen page, and check the Listen to this device
check box.

Re: Audacity

2013-08-08 Thread David Bailes
Hi Mark,
one way of getting the audio to switch between speakers is as follows. Let's
assume that you've got a single track in the project, and that the audio in
that track consists of someone saying welcome three times.
1. Select all the audio by pressing ctrl + a.
2. Duplicate the selected audio by choosing duplicate from the edit menu. You
now have two track which contain the same audio.
3. Set the pan on the first track to fully left and the pan on second track to
fully right. To open the pan dialog of the focussed track, press shift+p, and
enter a number between -1 to 1 which corresponds to left and right. If you play
the tracks then the voice is in the middle.
4. You can now pan part of the track by silencing the audio in one of the
tracks for that part. For example, set the first track to be selected, and the
second track unselected. Select a time range covering the first welcome, for
example by using the [ and ] keys during playback, then open the edit menu,
open remove audio or labels sub menu, and choose silence audio (ctrl+L). The
first welcome now comes only from the right.

For general info on using audacity with a screen reader, see the following
guide:

It's written for jaws users, but is also nearly all applicable to users of nvda

i'd got on fine with on my previous laptop), and although the sound is fine
when recording, playing the files back is very strange. Although the
overall quality is fine, the files seam to jump occasionally, so that parts
of words are missed, and the speed sometimes gets affected. Some of these
recordings are archers tapes,
so you may understand what i mean, when I say that the gaps between scene
changes are totally missed, and i'll go from one scene into another with
know pause at all. Do you have any suggestions about
settings i need to change? I've tried just playing around with it, but all i
seem to do is make the quality worse, or have know affect
at all, as i'm not as technically minded as some, i'm not as experienced.
If you like, i could up-load something to dropbox and show you exactly what
I mean? I've converted a file to mp3 just to see
if it was something in audasity itself, and sent it to someone else to test,
and its having the same affect. Again, I hope you don't mind me

Hi Samuel,
concerning selecting the right amount of sound in audacity.
If you've selecting a time range using shift + left/right arrows etc, note that
by default, the step size depends on the length of the recording - the longer
the recording, the larger the default step size. However you can change the
step size to what you want by using the zoom controls in audacity. Details can
be found in this jaws guide to audacity:
http://goo.gl/dQ75G
In the moving the cursor section of the guide, there's a sub section on the
Step size of the left and right arrow keys.
Alternatively, you may find it easier to use the [ and ] during playback to set
the start and end of the selected time range. You can simply press spacebar to
play, press [ to set the start, ] where you want the end of selection, and
spacebar to stop playback. If necessary, you can then adjust the selection
using shift + left/right arrow keys etc.

Re: Can audacity merge diff mp3 files into a single one?

2012-03-16 Thread David Bailes
Hi Prateek,
you can use audacity to merge mp3 files.
One way of doing it would be as follows:
1. Open the first file (ctrl+o).
2. press End to move the cursor to the end of the audio.
Then for each mp3 file you wanted to add on the end follow the next 3 steps:
1. Import the file (ctrl+shift+I). Importing adds a track to an existing
project, and this track is selected, and the others deselected.
2. On the tracks menu, open the Align tracks sub menu, and choose align with
cursor. This aligns the start of the audio in the selected tracks with the
cursor.
3. Press end to move to the end of the audio.
After you've imported all the files, to save the audio, choose export from the
file menu, and set the save as type combo box to mp3. Note that to save in the
mp3 format you have to install the lame mp3 encoder, as described in the guide.

Hi Colin,
I'm not sure what's going on. Could you check the length of the audio after
you've first read the file into audacity, and then after you've chopped off the
first five minutes, and before you've exported or saved it. You can check the
length of the audio by:
1. press end to move to the end of the audio
2. press ctrl+f6 to move to the selection bar.
3. press tab until you get to the selection start control, which also gives the
cursor position if there's no selection. Since the cursor is at the end of the
audio, this will give the length of the audio. The format will probably be
hh:mm:ss, so you'll hear something like 00h52m43s.
4. press ctrl+f6 twice to return to the audio tracks, which is where you were
before pressing the ctrl+f6 in step 1.

Also, are you saving the file to mp3 format or as an audacity project?

David.

Hi Colin,
you could chop off the front end in a similar manner:
1. move the cursor to the end of where you want to chop off (about 5 mins into
the file in your case).
2. press shift + home, which selects a time range from the cursor to the start
of the audio.
3. press delete.

So shift+home and shift+end work in a similar way that they work when editing a
line of text.

yes a fully sighted person would be able to see the length of the track, as
there's a time scale running across the window above the tracks. Couldn't you

Have you any idea what would cause this.
All going well, effectively chopped off front end of file saved as new name
then imported new file using open command to chop end off it.
However, I have tried this on a number of occasions and the converted MP3 file
to audacity format only seems to load about 60% of the file in other words the
remaining 40% approx does not convert hence is not there to remove the end of
it.
The total file length is around 50 mins Thanks for any ideas Colin

Re: Audacity

2011-12-01 Thread David Bailes
Hi Colin,
these instructions are for version 1.3.13 of audacity.
To be able to export to mp3 from audacity you need to download and install the
lame encoder, which isn't included with audacity for legal reasons:
http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/Lame_v3.98.3_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe

Then:
1. open the file.
2. move cursor to the start of the section which you want to chop off. This is
described in detail below.
3. press shift + end to select a time range from the cursor to the end of the
file,
4. press delete to delete the selected audio.
5. choose export on the file menu.
6. In the export file dialog, set the save as type combo box to mp3, change
folder if nessary and type in a file name (usual stuff) and press save.
7. A metadata dialog will then open, just press ok.
8. Note that when you close audacity you'll get a save changes dialog. This is
because you haven't saved the audio as an audacity project for further editing.
Since you don't want to do this, just tab to the no button and press it.

The space key starts playback from the cursor position. The space key also
stops playback, but does not change the cursor postion.
Moving the cursor:
1. home and end move the cursor to the start and end of the audio
2. comma and period move the cursor back and forward by a short period,
shift+comma and shift + period by a long period.
3. during playback, you can press the [ key to mark the new cursor position,
and then press space to stop.
4. during playback left arrow and right arrow seek back and forward by a short
period, and shift + left arrow and shift + right arrow by a long period.
5. you can customize these short and long periods in the preferences dialog
which you can open from the edit menu. In the playback category, there are
short and long period edit boxes.

best wishes,
David.

Re: An Audacity Problem

2011-11-26 Thread David Bailes
Hi Dave,
the 1.3.13 beta version of audacity is much more accessible than 1.2.6 version
and is reasonably stable. In addtion there's a guide for jaws users for this
version, which can also be used by users of window-eyes and nvda. It's
available here:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.13-Guide.html
I'm not sure what's causing the galvanized pipe effect, but it might be a
latency problem. If you record additional tracks whilst listening to existing
tracks, there are delays in audacity which cause the tracks not to be in sync.
Audacity can automatically correct for this if the amount of latency is know.
The recording section in the above guide covers the various options for
recording, and also includes a method for measuring the latency. An alternative
to that method would be just to time shift tracks, and find the latency by a
sort of trial and error. Time shifting of tracks is covered in the more
advanced editing section of the guide.
David.

At first glance, it may look like Microsoft disabled recording of
internal-or what you hear-sounds in Windows 7. Well, they didn't. It's a
little trickier, granted, but this is (often) a quick fix. To enable it:
1. Right click on the speaker icon in the system tray (bottom right).
2. Choose Recording Devices
3. In the empty white space, right-click and choose Show Disabled Devices.
You should see Stereo Mix appear in the list.
4. Right click on Stereo Mix and choose Enable.
5. Right click on Stereo Mix again, and choose Set as Default Device. Now you
can record anything you hear through your speakers. If you don't
have a program that can record audio, you can get a nice one called Audacity
over here. (It's free!)

Re: Volume; Need some help here with Audacity thanks!

2011-11-25 Thread David Bailes
Hi,
assuming that the cassette to pc device uses a usb connection, and that you're
using windows xp, then audacity probably can't control the recording level from
within the program. However, you can adjust the recording level by adjusting
the windows recording level of the device:
1. In the Control Panel, open the Sound and Audio Devices Properties dialog.
2. Move to the Audio page of this dialog, where there's a Sound recording
default device combo box. Select the device in this combo box, and then Tab to
the next control which is a Volume button, and press it.
3. A dialog opens, which contains a volume slider for the device.

set Audacity to give me the same sound on each recording? Is there a

I have many of my own stories recorded on tape and read by my wife and
they are ok on the tape but very low on the playback in my media player.
I use the JAWS speech program to get around and it does ok for my basic

Is there a button or a menu that I can go to in order to increase the

Re: sync in WMP 12

Hi Cornell,

To manually sync files in wmp12:
First add items to the sync list by selecting them in the main list, press the
appliction key, open
the add to sub menu, and choose sync list. ctrl+9 is the shortcut for adding to
the sync list.
Then tab to the start sync button and press it (alt+s).

Note that the play, burn, and sync buttons change which list is shown after the
main list. However, if for example you add a track to the sync list, as

automatically shown. So normally you don't have to press the sync button before
syncing items as described above.

Re: Crackling sound in Win/7

2011-02-09 Thread David Bailes
Hi Morey,
I had a quick look around the web for examples of this problem, and it seems
that it's not necessarily caused by problems with the sound hardware or driver
-
it can be caused by other drivers not working properly. You can check this by
temporarily disabling certain devices in the device manager and seeing if the
problem goes away. You can disable and then enable a device from the its
context
menu. It looks like the devices to check are the network adaptor, the modem,
and
tv tuner(if you have one). Note that you obviously shouldn't disable any core
hardware that will stop your computer working completely. The following website
was the source of some of this information. Note that there's no need to
download their latency detector, since you're got a crackle detector already.
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Unfortunately the chipset drivers can't be tested this way, since it would stop
the computer working.
I'm afraid I've no knowledge of sound cards, I just use the realtek on-board
sound,

Hi Don,

There's a free version of burnaware which can be used for non-comercial use.
It's a cd/dvd burning program, and it includes the option to display disk info.

You can download the program from the page:
http://www.burnaware.com/downloads.html
There are three download now links on this page, and the first one is for the

After opening the program:
1. on the compilation menu, open the utilities sub menu and choose disk info.

Re: Question for Audacity users

2010-10-20 Thread David Bailes
Hi Larry,

The suggestions were not Jaws specific. Although Audacity is not completely
accessible, a large part of it can be used with Jaws, Window-Eyes, and NVDA.
I'm
not sure about system access, and I don't think it's as accessible using
voiceover at the moment.

Regarding applying an effect to a single track. Since posting my reply, I've
realiized that there's something else that might be the problem. In audacity,
to
select audio, you have to select one or more tracks, and also a time range.
However, there's an option, select all audio in project if none selected, and
by
default this is on. So if you've selected a single track, but no time range,
then when you apply an effect it will automatically select all tracks and a
time
range which covers all the audio, and then apply the effect to everything. The
best thing to do is to disable this option. In the preferences dialog, it's
under the tracks category (see the selecting audio section of the jaws guide
for
more details about this option).

To select the audio in a single track, prior to applying an effect:
1. Set the track to be selected, and the others unselected.
2. To select a time range with covers the audio in the selected track, press
the
letter j to move the cursor to the start of audio in the selected track, and
then shift+k to select a time range up until the end of the audio in the
selected track. (pressing k on its own moves the cursor to the end of the audio
in the selected track or tracks). See the moving the cursor and selecting audio
sections of the jaws guide for more details.

David.

Re: Question for Audacity users

2010-10-19 Thread David Bailes
Hi Larry,

I presume that you're using a recent version of Audacity (latest version is
1.3.12).
If a track is the focus, then pressing enter toggles whether that track is
selected or not, but it has no effect on whether the other tracks are selected.
So if if you want only one track to be selected, you need to go through the
other the other tracks and set them to be not selected if necessary. You may
find the keystroke ctrl+shift+a helpful, as this sets all tracks (and any
selected time range) to unselected.
There's a Jaws guide to audacity at http://bit.ly/axYol6 which you may find of
some help,

David.

original message:
Hi. My problem occurs when I want to apply effects to one specific track from

According to an Audacity demo that I found on BlindCoolTech, my impression is
that if you wish to select one specific track, you make sure that it is in

Re: Windows 7 - how to question

2010-09-13 Thread David Bailes
Hi,

If your sound card can monitor the input then:
1. Open the Sound dialog in the control panel on the playback page. A couple of
ways of opening this are either to type change sound into the start menu, or
from the context menu of the speaker icon in the notification area.
2. In the list on this page, select the current output device, and then open
its
properties dialog. You can do this either by pressing spacebar, or choosing
properties from its context menu.
3. Go to the levels page of the properties dialog. This should contain a
slider,
mute button, and balance button for each of the inputs that it can monitor.

Alternatively, windows 7 also provides a software playthough for any device,
though it does have a slight lag:
1. Open the sound dialog on the recording page.
2. In the list on this page select the device you want to monitor, and open its
properties.
3. On the listen page of the properties dialog, check the listen to this device
check box.

Hi brian,

there's some info in the sound dialog in Vista and windows 7 section of this
guide to audacity:
http://bit.ly/axYol6

Stereo mix is often disabled by default, so you'll probably need to change the
setting to show disabled devices and then enable stereo mix,as described. Also,
if you're using window-eyes or nvda rather than jaws, then from what I
remember,
these screen readers read all three lines of text for each item on the

to read all three lines of text.

Re: Enabling What you Hear on Windows 7

2010-03-26 Thread David Bailes
Hi Samuel,

to enable what u hear, stereo mix or whatever it's called on windows 7:
1. Go to the recording page of the sound dialog, which you can open from start
menu, or the the context menu of the volume icon in the notification area.
2. In the list of devices, by default disabled devices aren't shown, and stereo
mix is disabled. To show disabled devices, open the context menu of any item in
the list, and choose show disabled devices if it isn't checked. Stereo mix ( or
whatever) should then appear in the list. To enable it, choose enable from its
context menu (if it's already enabled, then disable rather than enable appears
in the menu.)

Note that if what you hear doesn't appear in the list after setting the
option to show disabled devices, then this may be because your current sound
driver doesn't support it. You could try and find a more recent one for your
computer/laptop/motherboard.

my understanding is that Audacity can only record a single device. So if you
want to use audacity you could either use a hardware mixer as input or get

1. Enable software playthrough for both the microphone and the line in. On the
recording page of the sound dialog, for each device, select it, press spacebar
to open its properties dialog, go to the listen page, and check the listen to
this device check box.
2. Record stereo mix or whatever it's called on your sound card.

Re: Searching by bit rate

2010-03-11 Thread David Bailes
Hi Barry,

You should be able to do this with the advanced query syntax available in
windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/technicalresources/advquery.mspx

For example to search for files with 320k bit rate, the search term to enter
would be bitrate:320kbps. If you wanted to narrow it down to mp3 files rather
than any music file, then you have to add the term *.mp3 (just separate the
terms by a space).

In Vista and Windows 7 you can use this syntax in the search box in windows
explorer. With the windows explorer window open, just press ctrl+e to move to
this search box. By default,  all folders below the current location are also
searched.

I'm not very familiar with using the syntax in windows xp. Apparently you have
to use Windows Desktop Search, but I've never used it.

David.

Re: audacity

2009-11-17 Thread David Bailes
Hi,

You can find the position of the cursor, and the playback position in the
Selection bar. Ctrl+F6 cycles you round the toolbars, the table of tracks, and
the selection bar. When you open Audacity you're initially in the table of
tracks, so to move to the Selection bar, just press ctrl+f6. You can then move
through the controls in the selection bar by pressing tab. These controls
include controls for selection start and audio position. When there's no
selection, then selection start shows the postion of the cursor. For more
details, see the Selection bar section of the following guide:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.9-Guide.html

The equivalent of Goldwave's queue points are labels, which are contained in a
label track. Unfortunately, these label tracks are not very accessible at the
moment: creating labels is ok, but once the labels are created, if you tab
through the label track, the labels are not read by screen readers. However,
there's an Edit Labels editor (opened from the tracks menu) to get round this
problem. This contains a table of the labels, with their names, start and end
points.j Note that Jaws 11 doesn't read this editor properly, but this will be
fixed in an Audacity release, hopefully in December.

To create a label for the current cursor postion or current selection, press
ctrl+b, type in a name, and then press enter.
To create a label for the current playback position, press ctrl+m, type in a
name, and then press enter.
Note that in both these cases the focus is moved to the label track. Because
it's easy to accidentally create a label when the focus is in the label track,
it's normally best to move back to an audio track after creating a label (up
arrow moves you up a track).

Do post any further questions you have,
David.

Hahaha, RNIB could never ever develop anything like the IPlayer. The BBC
developped it, although the Beeb used a pre-existing development of the Flash
Player for internet streaming from Siemens. See,

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2007/06_june/27/iplayer.shtml

Accessability was grafted onto the IPlayer by a team within the Beeb after
much complaint from UK listeners re. lack of accessability. Siemens isn't
noted for its comitment to accessability, hence the BBC's effort after the
launch of IPlayer. It should, of course, have got it right before launch but
then we're familiar with access as an after thought.

I often wonder whether Adobe couldn't build more native accessability into
Flash but I believe there are documented methods of binding keystrokes to
actions or facilities provided by flash, but I don't know enough to say more,
as it must be obvious my knowledge is rather thin here.

default duration is read out as zero, this is a bug, and in fact it's 30 again.
So to change it to one, press end to move to the last digit, and follow the
insructions in step 3.

6. The silence is selected.  Select all the audio by pressing ctrl + A, and
then choose duplicate from the edit menu. so that you now have two identical
tracks. You can move the focus between the tracks by pressing up arrow and down
arrow.

7. Both tracks are selected, and a time range covering all the audio is
selected. To deslect track 1, move to the first track and press enter, which
toggles the selection of a track. So with track two selected, choose the
Reverse effect from the Effects menu. Track two now contains silence followed
by the tone, rather than the other way round in track one.

8. Set the pan control of track one to fully right, and the pan control of
track two to fully left. To change the pan of the focussed track, press
shift+P which opens a pan dialog. Type in 1 for pan to right, and minus 1 for
pan to left.

9. Select all the audio by pressing ctrl+a, and then open the repeat dialog
from the effects menu. specify how many repeats of the selected audio you want.

10. Press home to move the cursor to the start, and then spacebar to play/stop.

The Jaws guide I mentioned has more details:

I am a complete new comer to the world of audio editing. I would like to make
an audio file consisting of two channels. That is to say, different information
being presented to each ear piece simultaneously. Would this be possible using
a programme such as Sound Forge. I have a demo copy of version 9, but it all
seems rather daunting to me.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Re: Audio Editing Software

2009-07-20 Thread David Bailes

Hi George,

The latest release of Audacity is 1.3.8 which came out at the end of the last
week. Although a small number of people have had problems installing it on XP,
the developers are working on the problem, and there is a temporary fix if
needed. There's a new version of the Jaws guide which someone else referred to,
and it's available at:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.8-Guide.html

If you've got a recording which you want to save as separate tracks, then you
could do something like this:

Make sure the track is selected (enter toggles the selection). Press home to
make sure you're at the beginning of the track. Then go round the following
loop:
1. Press P to play, and then press ] at the point where you want the track
segment to end, and then spacebar to stop the playback.
2. There's now audio selected, and you can save this by choosing Export
selection from the file menu.
3. After the export, press right arrow which deselects the current selection
and moves the cursor to the end of that selection, so that you're ready to go
round the loop again.

Note that several ways of moving the cursor and refining which audio is
selected are given in the guide.

David.

I am in the process of converting cassette to computer and I'm looking at
audio editing software that is accessible to VIPs. I'm using Audacity at the
moment but am finding it hard splitting tracks with this software.

Hi Katherine,

If you have any specific pains in mind, then let me know and I can pass these
on the the Audacity developers who are keen to improve its accessibility,

David.

I wouldn't recommend the use of audacity. It is a pain as far as I can
tell. Use GoldWave.

Re: BBC Podcastes

2009-06-23 Thread David Bailes

Hi Ketan,

In the list of 6 options which includes itunes, google reader, etc, the last
item is RSS feed. To copy the feed address to the clipboard, either select copy
shortcut from the context menu of the RSS feed link, or alternatively open the
link, and then copy the address in the address bar.

David.

Re: Burning a CD in Windows Media Player 11

2009-05-04 Thread David Bailes

Hi,

there's a jaws guide to wmp 11, and most of it is equally applicable to window
eyes:

http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Windows-Media-Player-11-Guide.html

the revlevant sections are probably: introduction, main window, player taskbar,
and burn page,

David.

original message:
Ok. Probably the stupid question of the day or perhaps the week.

In WMP10, the CD option was on the files menu. I just upgraded to WMP11
and was going to burn a couple of files into an audio CD but now cannot
find the burn option.
Where is it? I do have the Classic Menues enabled if that makes a
difference and I am running xp Home and Window-Eyes 7.01.
