However, I find the very odd phrasing of especially the realspeak voices a bit difficult to understand. Hence my question: Has anyone ever written such a programme which turns text files into audio files using the Eloquence speech synthesizer? That would also mean if you e.g. like the british voice, it then uses the british voice as it is already installed on your computer? Just curious. I have already answered the question in my first post actually so no, the question wasn't ignored so I'll repeat what I've already said and I'll explain a a little further so as to avoid any further confusion smile. Yes, by default a Mac can certainly capture and record sources without Voiceover interfering so in other words you can run your Screen reader without any fear of it conflicting with any incoming software streams. The process of Capturing is known in the Mac world commonly as Hijacking but both terms pretty much mean the same thing. I use a piece of software here called Audio Hijack Pro which pretty much does everything that Total Recorder does, only thing it won't do is edit audio files but it can be integrated with an audio editor on the mac. You can hijack as many sources as you need at once and you can even Mix those sources together if you want to, this makes software such as Skype easy to monitor for example, I know people in call centres who use a Mac with Audio Hijack Pro and Skype, using some simple Apple scripts running with Audio Hijack Pro, they can monitor the call plus log information regarding the call, say date and time, length of call etc but I'm rambling. Well the Mac thrashes the PC quite frankly as far as accessible recording software goes and recording software that actually and successfully does what its designed to do. As stated, its not the fault of the people at High Criteria, they've done their level best with Total Recorder and associated products and no doubt about it! Total Recorder is a fine piece of software, those who read the list will in fact know that Total Recorder is one of those tools I have in my Audio Toolbox when using a PC. No it doesn't. I have not used the Zoom recorder, so I can't comment on it. As to which is better, the DM-520 or the Ls-7: In my opinion, the button configuration and the case are better with the DM-520. The audio quality on the dm-520 is unquestionably good. The case, with its kickstand and flap that you can open, is far superior to the sleeve case for the LS-7. The sound quality on the LS-7 is better -- fuller, even more life-like. There is a variable low-cut filter that, if you set it to 100Hz, does cut down on wind noise if you're making outside recordings. The central mic does improve the sound quality. And you can put up to a 32GB SDHC card in the LS-7. It's a tough call. If you've been happy with the Dm-5, I'd go with that -- although, at least a couple of days ago, the LS-7 was cheaper on amazon. It all depends on what your wife plans to use the recorder for. Ironically, the crappy case on the LS-7 is a major drawback; there is no belt clip or kickstand, and you can't fold down the top flap while keeping the recorder in its case. Hope this helps. Gordon McFarlane -Original Message- From: John Riehl Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 2:41 AM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: comparison between the LS-7 and DM-620 I've purchased both the Olympus Ls-7 and the DM-620 and want to post a brief comparison and review of the two recorders. The short version: I'm going to return the DM-620 to amazon. Although both recorders have three mics, the Ls-7 has better mics -- the two side mics stick out more than the DM-620 mics. there is no comparison re the quality of voice recordings; the LS-7 gives a much richer, life-like bass sound to recordings, even when recording in MP# mode. The DM-620 does not have a pre-record mode, which buffers two seconds of recording; the LS-7 has this mode. The DM-620 also does not have a 100HZ or 300HZ low-cut filter; you can either turn the low cut filter on or off on the DM-620. The LS-7 has a 100HZ and 300HZ low cut filter choice. both recorders have the same button configuration, which, in my opinion, is inferior to the Dm-420 or Dm-520. the record,/pause and stop buttons are on the front face of both recorders, not on the side as they are on the DM-520. The case on both recorders is terrible; it is really a sleeve. It does not have a flap that opens and closes, nor does it have the kickstand feature like the dM-520 case. Both recorders have the same level of voice guidance; 95% of the menu choices talk. Neither recorder gives you system memory info, nor can you set the clock by voice as far as I know. But all of the record, lay, file, etc, selections speak on both recorders. In short, if you are looking for an excellent digital recorder, spend a few more bucks and get the LS-7. The H! is a high quality audio recorder which records in either of 2 formats, MP3 or Wave. When recording in Wave format you can mark positions in your recording by pressing the play button. In Neil's review he talks about how these marks are compatible with Sound Forge - if you copy the file across to your computer you can open the file with Sound Forge and locate the portions of the file you marked whilst recording on the Zoom H1 whilst pressing the play button. That's all very nice but what if you're using the Mac? I've just ben recording with the Zoom H1 and inserted a fair few markers, all of which Amadeus Pro found in the wave file created without a problem, you use option left and right arrows to move between markers, use command-left and command-right arrows to select from one marker to another etc. When the Zoom H1 is connected to a USB port of your Mac it is detected without a problem and you'll see it as a drive in the main finder Desktop window. Copying from the H1 is perhaps a little slow but not too bad, the Victor Reader Stream for example is at a snails pace compared to this. You're supposed to be able to use the Zoom H1 as a sound device when connected to a computer via the USB cable, so far I've not managed to get this to work. Open the Sound dialog in the control panel on the playback page. A couple of ways of opening this are either to type change sound into the start menu, or from the context menu of the speaker icon in the notification area. 2. In the list on this page, select the current output device, and then open its properties dialog. You can do this either by pressing spacebar, or choosing properties from its context menu. 3. Go to the levels page of the properties dialog. This should contain a slider, mute button, and balance button for each of the inputs that it can monitor. Alternatively, windows 7 also provides a software playthough for any device, though it does have a slight lag: 1. Open the sound dialog on the recording page. 2. In the list on this page select the device you want to monitor, and open its properties. 3. On the listen page of the properties dialog, check the listen to this device check box. Since Noise reduction seems to be a topic of interest to a lot of list members I thought I'd write a small getting started guide if you like for those who want to give Noise Reduction a go. This little guide assumes that you want to rid the audio you've recorded of a constant background noise, suppose you've recorded from radio and you have some background interference from somewhere so follow these steps and you may be quite surprised at the results you get and others feel free to comment or add notes as required. This guide is written with Goldwave in mind though people with the appropriate knowledge can adapt it to their requirements, for example if they're using Sound Forge, Total Recorder etc. Go into Goldwave and open the file you wish to work with. Next scan through the file until you find a portion of background noise on its own, a quarter of a second will do. Select this portion of audio and copy it to the clipboard, for added security you may like to paste the copied portion of audio to a new window and you can work with this to make the sample of background noise longer should you need to. Now select all of your audio file you're working on or all of the portion you want noise removed from. Go into Goldwaves menu system and select effects, filters and Noise reduction. From the drop-down lists of presets select Envelope from Clipboard and press Okay, processing of the envelope and of the audio will start immediately. So listen to the result and see what you think. If the audio seems expanded then repeat the steps above though when you select the preset Envelope From Clipboard adjust the Scale edit box from 100 to 10, this determines by how much DB Goldwave Should reduce the noise by, press okay and processing of the noise envelope and the audio file will start. Obviously a lot of the noise will still be present so repeat the process of noise reduction again a few more times with the Scale set at 10% each time, noise will decrease gradually but you'll end up with a more natural sounding audio than you did the first time you tried with the scale set at 100% Have fun! Thanks John. I know about this but my idea is sort of keep it simple as much as possible. I am not a musician, I don't need any fancy stuff but something good enough to make reasonable voice recordings. I got two mics sitting here, one is Shure SM58 (dynamic) and another Apex 460 (condenser) and was thinking about the most reasonable and effective way of connecting them to my computer without a necessity of playing with too many knobs, sliders and switches. I was hoping that someone from the pc-audio group had a chance to see the device I was mentioning about in my original email. HI, None of this professional beast are talking, anyway. Since all of the H1 features are meant to be manually driven, so this unit should be accessible, however, as always, a lot of memorization again. :) From the description of H1, it looks like being comparable with H4 regarding its recording quality. Discard APH Demo Disc 2010 Immediately We regret to report that The APH Demo Disc 2010 contains a virus. The APH Demo Disc is a CD-ROM that contains catalogs and demonstration software. The affected disc has a light blue background and says ©2010. The braille label on the sleeve is also dated 2010. If you received this disc by mail or picked it up at the recent ACB, NFB, or NEA conferences, PLEASE DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. Detailed Information about Virus The name of the virus is Win32/Prolaco. Fortunately, your computer will not be infected with this virus immediately upon inserting the APH Demo Disc 2010. The only way to infect your system is to click the demo software link on the Demo Disc startup screen, and then click the link to install the demo of Verbal View of Windows XP. The only file on the disc affected by the virus is the Verbal View of Windows XP demo. If you attempt to install the Verbal View of Windows XP demo, and you have up-to-date virus software installed, you should be warned about the presence of the virus immediately. Please Take the Following Steps 1. Discard the APH Demo Disc 2010. 2. Completely scan your system with up-to-date virus detection software. One antivirus program that detects Win32/Prolaco with a general scan is the Microsoft Security Essentials. This antivirus software is both free and accessible. You may obtain more information about safe computer practices, virus detection, and download Microsoft Security Essentials at www.microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspx . 3. If you do inadvertently run the Verbal View of Windows XP .exe file and you do not have virus detection software running, this virus will spread itself multiple ways, including via email messages with infected attachments, downloading software that may appear to be real programs, and by turning off security settings on your Windows machine. If your machine has been infected, update your antivirus software and then run it again to remove the infection. Replacing the APH Demo Disc 2010 APH will create a new 2010 Demo Disc and label it clearly in both print and braille. We will distribute this clean disc later in the summer. About APH Antivirus Procedures Note that APH always virus scans the discs it produces, as was the case with the 2010 Demo Disc, but some virus detection software does not detect the Win32/Prolaco virus during a general scan. Fortunately, antivirus software will detect this virus if you attempt to install the infected program Verbal View of Windows XP. Due to this issue, we are reviewing our antivirus procedures. Our Sincere Apologies We regret any inconvenience this infected disc may have caused. At APH, we care about our customers and we will be happy to work with you further to resolve any issues concerning this virus. Please contact c...@aph.org if you have questions.
