Re: Screen readers and Text Aloud?

It should be control-f7 to convert the file. Make sure you go through the
options to tell it what voice you want and also what bit rate and that you
want it to convert to mp3.

Re: One More Time for Skype Talking

Dan the skype talking window normally is hidden. Did you tell skype to
allow it? You'll have to do that before it comes on. What it should do
normally when you hit the shortcut is to call skype. Let me know if what I
suggested resolves the issue. If not perhaps we can get together on the
phone and I can help you trouble shoot the issue.

Not tototally sure here but first save your document or work as a txt
file. This assures that you have your work on Dspeach saved. Then
make all your changes and save again. Then to convert your work into
a wav file, you use the File menu and go down to convert to wav or ?
file. hit enter and this will give you a choice and save as wav. Now
once you have your work saved as a wav file or a text file you can
right click that file name and your content menu should offer you a
convert to MP3 line and if all goes well just hit enter and your wave
file will then convert to an mp3. I have no idea of your system and I
have not used dspeach in a year or so, but it works something like
that. It use to work great for me but because I have added a bunch of
other programs, something got thrown out of wak and I just don't have
time to mess with it any lnger.
 Good lucks!

Re: lost my windows sounds

That's kind of an odd one but when your in the sounds under control panel
and you play the sound does it play? If not press the browse button and
locate the sound you need. These are usually found under Windows Multi
Media. Once you've reset the sound check it again to make sure it's playing
then apply the changes once the sounds are all working and save your
scheme. You can give it any name you want such as djc's sounds. Hopefully
this will resolve this issue for you.

 Hi John.

The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those
three
right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in
a
folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You
can
 put
subfolders under this to organize them. The player won't announce the
folders, but when you're in bookshelf mode you'll be able to navigate
to
 them.

As for playing files in stereo, this may or may not be true. I say
this,
because earlier firmware updates to the player didn't play files in
 stereo.
You need to have version 2.1 or later of the firmware, and it will play
files in stereo. To find out your player's version, with no media in
it,
press the sleep button ten times quickly until you hear the serial
number
being announced. Once this announcement starts, just wait, and you'll
 hear
the version of your player's firmware announced. My player has version
2.1.3 of the firmware on it.

To download NLS books for your player, you need to be signed up with

and click on the link on that page. Since you have an NLS player,
you'll
 be

Hello List members,
I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail.
I have a few questions about it.
For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive.
What kind of format will those files need to be in an order for this
machine to play them?
I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo?
It has a monaural speaker built in to it.
But I'm asking about its headphone jack.
I have seen some digital playback equipment that had mono speakers built
in to them before.
But when you plug a pare of headphones in to them, the sound came out in
stereo.
Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that can do
this?
Thinks in advance.
My best regards.
  John.
PS. Where is a good website to download digital talking books?

  Hi,

You need to be careful buying ATT phones if you want to continue
 to use
talks. Locked phones can sometimes prohibit the installation of
 3rd party

  applications.

Your best bet is to purchase an unlocked phone then insert your
 sym card
  into it!

Of course, you will need to transfer your talks lisence to the
 new
 phones's
  EMEI for a cost.
Another thing you can try is to contact ATT and see if they still
 offer
 an
accessible phone which is a contract phone with talks installed.
 They
 used
to do this with the Nokia 6682 but that is an older phone and may
 in fact
 be
  the one you are using.

Nokia phones come in many form factors i.e. slider, candy bar,
 flip etc.

The N82 is a very popular slider phone and works well with talks.
 You can

also pick up an N95-3 which is also a slider phone with loads of
 features
  including 3g connectivity.

It really depends on what you want the phone to do.

Good candy bar phones that work well with talks are the N73, N79
 and E51
 and
  E71.

Don't grab the E71X from ATT as it is locked and I have heard
 that users
are having issues installing talks on it.

Total Recorder Drivers

2009-03-10 Thread djc
Hi Cathy. You do want to choose the user mode driver. I don't even know
what the kernel mode driver does so make sure that one is unchecked. Once
your installed they will walk you through their wizzard and be sure when
you conduct the test to have winamp running with some music. The wizzard
will tell you if it has detected sound. I've used just the standard edition
of total recorder for quite a while and I like it because I can record
midis with it and convert them to mp3's. Good luck and I hope you get it
working.

Re: A DVD cost comparison question

2009-02-14 Thread djc
The double layered ones are twice as expensive and also you need to make
sure your burner can do that. Now all burners won't do double density so
this is really important to check. If your manual says double you will be
good to go but they are expensive so plan on that.

2009-02-04 Thread djc
Yes I have used KBPiano for a few years. Now I can't comment on how well it
will work with Jaws but I use it just fine with win-eyes. First make sure
you are in the main window of the program.
There is a music creator window but that window is not speech friendly so
you want to be in the untitled window. Lets now type control-p which will
put the program in practice mode. Press notes on the bottom of the keyboard
and see if you hear sound. Press escape to cancel this window. If no sound
is heard lets press The letter p and that will bring up a patch list where
you select the instruments you'd like. This should at least get you started
Dean but if you need more help Please drop me email and I'll help you.

This is a Jukebox; but it is no ordinary jukebox.

2008-07-27 Thread djc
This is a Jukebox; but it is no ordinary jukebox.

It will play all of your favorite songs from 1952 through
   1982.

Each year has a scroll or drop down box that shows all the great
songs for that year. Most years have over 40 songs.

There is even a section at the bottom that allows you to listen
to show tunes, TV show themes, Doo Wop and several others.

This is pretty neatand it is free. Read the rest of this and
then click on the site at the bottom.

Once you click on a song it will play and when it finishes it
automatically plays the next song in the list and continues until it has
played all the songs.

This is really cool!!!

It has a volume control which you should use in conjunction with
your computers volume control.

One of the best features is that it will play in the background.
That means you can be doing other computer work on a different screen.

Pick and play any popular song from 1952 through 1982 or go to
the specialty areas. You can't miss them. They are listed in very bright
colors. (If you can see the colors)

(That is for older eyes!!!)

Re: Klango player?

2008-07-03 Thread djc
The first thing you need to do is go to their web site and register. Once
you do that
you can then start the player up and you'll hear that tick tock but it
should only last for a few seconds and then a slight pause and the speech
should come on. It is an interesting player in the fact that you can listen
to lots of streams and podcasts as well as books. You also can download
their games and play them. They only have a couple of games. The player is
self voicing but I leave window-eyes running and it works fine here. I
don't claim advantages over winamp but they have done a good job as far as
grouping lots of streams in to sections.

Hey folks

For a while now, I've heard about the Klango player, a number of
people have mentioned it on several different forums and things.
Visiting the website
http://klango.net didn't really tell me all that much, other than
it's a media player, and is self-voicing. Now, as most of you
probably know, I'm a big time fan of Winamp, and I've even given
Foobar 2000 a shot. I've even tried real alternative and thought they
were all pretty cool. I downloaded and installed the player,
thinking that my Sapi 5 synthesizers I had installed would just take
over and I could navigate the screen, but all I heard was a sort of
tick, tock, tick, tock sound going from left to right in my speakers.
Not having speech, I sort of panicked and really haven't played with
it much since then. So, what can this player do that Winamp can not?
Is it safe to use the player with a screenreader already running
i.e. System Access to go, JAWS or Window-eyes? Since I only heard
the weird sound I wasn't sure what in hell was going on. What will
this player do that all the others can't, or won't do?
I'm really curious to try it but not sure where to start?

Thanks.

Re: Equalizing Volume

2008-05-20 Thread djc
I'd go download a program called mp3 gain. I'd also convert your wave files
to mp3 which will save you space. mp3 gain does an excellent job at
normalizing volumes so they are all the same.

How can I get all of the volumes the same if I wanted to put them on a CD

Deep Discounts Offered for One Week on Remaining Inventory

2008-05-06 Thread djc
I offer this for your Education:

Deep Discounts Offered for One Week on Remaining Inventory

Boston, MA. May 6. DVS Home Video, a project
begun by Boston public broadcaster WGBH in the
early 90's to make movies on video accessible to
the nation's blind and visually impaired viewers,
will end as of May 12. The Hollywood studios
have ceased manufacturing VHS or tape versions of
films for sale and rental. WGBH's work to make
media accessible via description goes on, with
efforts focused on television, feature films in
theaters, DVDs and online video.

The DVS Home Video effort, started over a decade
ago with funding from the U.S. Department of
Education, resulted in more than 300 videos made
accessible through narration of key visual
elements inserted into natural pauses in
dialogue. From the very first DVS Video's debut,
the reaction of the community was immediate and
actually profound. Films came alive in a whole
new way, and the eagerness for new titles only
grew. Many of the videos sold over the years
were purchased by libraries and schools, which
multiplied the number of individuals and families
who took such enjoyment in described movies.

Films are now being distributed for sale and
rental on DVD, BluRay DVD and through video on
demand (either rental or download to own)
services via the Internet. WGBH's Media Access
Group, home to the Descriptive Video Service, has
been working to transition the home video efforts
to DVD and to these online movie delivery
outlets. Lack of available memory space on DVDs
has been stated as the reason why more
description tracks, created for theatrical
release in the over 300 movie theaters with
WGBH's Motion Picture Access® (MoPix®) systems,
are not making the migration onto DVDs. WGBH
maintains a list of DVDs that have description
tracks on them at the Web page listed with other
description-related links at the bottom of this post.

Advocacy is needed from the community of
description fans to make this transition
happen. Please see the link below for a list of
Hollywood studios' home video/home entertainment
divisions. Help show the providers of video on
these formats that there is a market and that you
would be willing to purchase movies with a
description track included as an optional feature.

For the next week (until May 12), DVS Home Video
titles remaining in stock will be sold at a deep
discount. Videos that previously were available
for $15.01 and above will be sold for
$10. Videos retailing for $15 and below will be now be available for $5.

To access a list of available titles, please visit the Web site

To hear a list of titles, and/or to place an
order, please call: 317 579-0439 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)

All of us at the Media Access Group appreciate

next chapter. Here is a list of links to

Re: DTV Converter Boxes

2008-04-29 Thread djc
Hello Tom. I bought one of these just a few days ago for my tv here in the
office. I was able to hook it up myself but when I turned on the tv after
switching it to chanel 3 and turned on the box there was no sound and I
pressed all the buttons on the remote and the box and I couldn't get it to
scan the chanels. So I had to wait till a friend came over and he briefly
glanced at the manual and pressed a couple of buttons on the remote and it
took off. We have 10 regular chanels here in Sacramento and it found 5
digital chanels. I bought my box at best buy and it's an Insignia. Radio
shack, walmart and circuit city are also selling the boxes with the cupon
program. I live on the first floor of an apartment building so an outside
antenna is not an option. It works pretty well with my rabbit ears but I
have noted some drop out on some of the chanels so I had to tweak the
antenna to find the best signal. Lets say I am watching our chanel 10 here
and I want their digital weather chanel. I just type 102 and that gives me
the second chanel. All in all I am pleased with the box and it sounds great
although my tv here in the office is just a small 13 inch mono set that I
bought when I first married my wife in 1990. Depending on the model of the
box you buy you may be able to get it running yourself but this one here is
menus so be aware incase you do need sighted assistance. I was able to find
the insignia manual online so the manuals should be available online in pdf
format.

I'm hoping there might be, at least, a few that can be used
as a stand alone television audio only receiver.

For those not aware of it, all analog television transmission
in the United States will be turned off next February. Two
forty dollar coupons can be obtained to help purchase two
analog to DTV converter boxes for those who can't or don't
want to buy a new television set.

The original upper television channels were auctioned off to
telecommunication and other companies for something in the
order of eighteen billion dollars. Wonder if other countries
are doing something similar to this?

Thanks,

Tom

the microphone is in the correct jack and that you know the microphone is
good and it has the proper Amperage. Also make sure the microphone
connection to the computer is tight and properly plugged in. Make sure if
the microphone has a switch that it is turned on. I have an C-media on

and Please let us know if you get it working. Happy Holidays.

I think Outspoken showed up around 1990. I say that because I started
using IBM's Screen Reader/2 on OS/2, which could access both OS/2 and
Windows 3.1 applications, in January 1991. Screen Reader/2 became
generally available later that year. I know Outspoken was around before
then because Screen Reader/2 used an off screen model, and Berkley
Systems was credited with the first use of an off screen model in their
Outspoken product. In fact, I might have seen a demo of Outspoken at the
NFB convention in 1990.

Dane Trethowan wrote:
Ok, well tha'ts not quite either and 20 years ago I was indeed using an
Apple 2/E computer. The Echo 2/+ which you're refering to was known then
as
an expansion card which fitted into an expansion slot, much like
today's
PC cards fit into slots inside the computer. This card had nothing
whatever
to do with the sounds generated by the Apple, that was done through the
Apple's CPU through the Apple's internal speaker.
The Echo did however have some sound chips onboard which allowed for
various
extra sounds to be added, you could program the thing to play music, I
have
some compositions somewhere both as demo stuff and some I tried to write
using Applesoft basic. Yes, you could I suppose call the Echo a sound
card
but it wasn't, it was supposed to be a voice synthesizer if you can see
what
 I'm getting at.
Now if you want to use another example of what I believe you're talking
about, my Doubletalk Lt, it also has some sound chips on it and you can
programme the thing to make some basic sounds, sound DTMF tones and the
like
so in that way, my Doubletalk LT and the Echo are similar.
As a final tribute to the Echo, have a listen to one if you can, boy!
We've
sure come a hell of a long way in regard to voice synthesis.
Now in April this year, the Operating System for the Mac was indeed
Tiger
and the Screen Reader was indeed built-into or part of that, speech has
actually been part of every Apple OS for Mac since version 4 I think so
the
logical extension was a built-in Screen Reader. Outspoken for example,
didn't have its own speech rather it used the speech provided by the OS.
You talk of Screen Readers 20 years ago for the Apple. Well as far as I
know
(and someone could correct me on this) but there wasn't a screen reader
for
the Apple at that time, rahter software such as Wordtalk was designed
from
the ground-up as an accessible word processor with a variety of voice
 synthesizers.
Now to be absolutely clear on this, I don't know exactly when Outspoken
for
the Mac arrived on the scene but I'm absolutely sure that it wasn't
around
20 years ago, Mac computers back then were around but very few and very
rare, the main Apple computers in use at the time were the Apple 2/E and
the
amazing (for the time) Apple 2/GS (GS standing for Graphics Sound).

17 Gig not true as far as I am concerned. There either 4 or 8 gig. The 8
gig are double sided and your burner needs to support those. Also they are
quite expensive. I myself use the 4 gig ones. It works out to around 4.4
gig actually.

You can record on those disks just like you can on traditional compact
disks. The disks most people, like me, have access to hold around five
gigs
of data. They come in writable and rewritable types. You need a
different
kind of drive to read and write to them but they're not terribly
expensive.
I believe the latest disks, blue ray, hold fifty gigs but I'm not sure of
this. I have a pack of the disks I first mentioned but I haven't used any
of them yet. I will be shortly, however, because I'm ripping 650 disks to
my hard drive and plan to use these as more or less permanent storage.

Hi All! We've discussed file sizes of MP3's vs. WAV. Now, what is the
file
size of a DVD, especially DVD audio? You can get more on a DVD than you
can
on a CD. As great as DVD's sound, is the file size smaller, or is it a
more
compressed format?

Re[2]: Accessible FM transmitters

2007-09-13 Thread djc
Jonathan that's wonderful but here the FCC is money hungry. I've always
wished that there were low powered stations here but where are you going to
put them in the major cities like Sacramento, ca where I live. Years ago
when I lived in The Boston Area of New England we heard several low powered
stations on AM at like 610 or 620 which now the foolish FCC has sold to
commercial stations. These stations would broadcast just for a couple of
hours around midnight and they were basically in New York and I could hear
them fairly well. Sure I heard Language that is not necessarily clean but
it still was fun to listen. Back in the 80s I was living in San Francisco
and there was a feller named Steve Dunifer and he was running a low powered
station out of Berkeley which is the East Bay in that area. I know he
fought with the FCC on more than one ocassion. He may still be on the air.
I don't know if he's broadcasting on the net but he called his station
Radio Free Berkeley.

Here
anyone is entitled to set up a low power FM station with a maximum power
of
1 watt, within two defined areas of spectrum. You don't have to apply for
any license, just set up and go. The Radio Spectrum management group
reserve
the right to come and inspect your installation at any time and there are
fines if you're over power. You also are required to do a station
identification that provides contact details a minimum of every three
hours.
But that's it. Simple. And you'll find some of the best radio out there on
those frequencies. Lots of niche and community broadcasters.

Re: an interesting DVD writing experience

2007-08-28 Thread djc
It's hard to say what may have happened. It could be a bad dvd or a dirty
lens or your computer was doing something in the backround causing the data
to come up false. I've written dvds and had them come up bad. If that
happens to me I usually restart my machine incase it's a memory problem and
I get a fresh dvd. Often times that will correct a problem. A good choice
is rewriteable dvds since you can write over them if there is a problem and
I use them now and again for my work here. Another way to go might be to
buy a good USB hard drive since there reasonably cheap now. Hope this
information helps.

Re[2]: What is Freecorder Toolbar 3 is explained here

2007-08-21 Thread djc
Ok I've now taken a look at this here Freecorder. I'm using window-eyes and
here are my impressions. First I tried using it with IE6 and I could locate
the record, stop and pause buttons but could not locate the play and
settings buttons. Using firefox I was able to locate all the buttons. Yes
you do need to use your mouse pointer to locate the buttons and you do need
to left click on them. When you do this a freecorder window pops up and
that window is just a graph but it does need to be on the screen during
record. When I told it to play it first went to c:documents and settings
and as you probably can guess it went deeply in that folder. I changed that
under settings. I was interested to see how this toolbar handled echo123
from Skype so I hit record and called echo123 on skype. When I finished I
stopped the recording on the toolbar and hit play. It opens the folder
where the recordings are stored and i was surprised to note more than 1 mp3
file. The first mp3 file was skype's output from echo123 but it did not
record my voice after the tone. The second recording was my microphone with
echo123 faintly in the backround. Now I was using headphones with my
speakers turned all the way down. Under the settings you can use the driver
that they provide or you can use your sound card drivers. I tested both
methods and the result seemed to be the same. If it installed any kind of
player I can't get to it. It does install to both IE and firefox or you can
tell it which browser you'd like it to install in to. When I played the
recordings back it called winamp. Will I keep it installed probably because
you never know when you want to just grab a quick snippit of something. Now
when you install it it will offer to install lots of other things for you
but I just left it at the defaults.

Average PC is a smorgasboard for a new MP3-eating trojan

2007-08-04 Thread djc
I offer you this article for your education.

Average PC is a smorgasboard for a new MP3-eating trojan
By
Jacqui Cheng
 | Published: August 03, 2007 - 02:05PM CT
It's no secret that people like to collect music on their PCs, with music
files taking
up more and more hard drive space as time goes on. Recent data from
Comscore says
that as of April of this year the typical computer in the US contains an
average
of 880 MP3 files, taking up roughly 3GB of hard drive space. Compared to
the average
number of Word documents (197), PDFs (100), and Excel files (77), music
files make
up the single most common type of file found on an average computer by a
long shot.
But that very hobby could bite an avid MP3 collector in the butt if a new
worm makes
its way into their computers. A newly-uncovered worm called
W32.Deletemusic
does exactly what its name implies—it goes through a PC and deletes all
MP3 files
in sight. And that's it. Simultaneously low-threat and highly annoying, the
worm
makes its way from computer to computer by spreading itself onto all
attached drives
of a given PC, including flash drives and removable media. If that media is
then
removed and inserted into another computer, it continues its music-eating
rampage
on the new host.
This isn't the first time such a worm has gone after MP3 files. Nopir-B
made its
rounds some two years ago and posed as DVD copying software,
according
to security firm Sophos. When users tried to run it, Nopir-B scolded them
for participating
in piracy and proceeded to delete all MP3s from their computers. Similarly,
last
year's
Erazer
trojan deleted not only MP3 files, but AVIs, MPEGs, WMVs, and ZIP files as
well
in a crusade against piracy.
Of course, these worms don't take into account the fact that many MP3 files
may not
be pirated at all—they could be legitimate downloads, ripped from CDs, or
even recorded
by users themselves. And while losing an entire music collection that
you've dedicated
so much time into ripping, labeling, and organizing can be devastating,
there is
no real payload for the worm's efforts. Such foresight isn't exactly the
forte of
these trojan-writers, according to Sophos' Graham Cluley. The authors of
this worm
are more likely to be teenage mischief makers than the organized criminal
gangs we
typically see authoring financially-motivated malware these days, he
said
in a statement seen by IDG News Service.
A quick poll among the Ars Technica staff shows that not only do we all
have a disproportionate
number of MP3 files compared to the national average, some of us would be
quite a
bit more inconvenienced than others if we were to get bitten by the
W32.Deletemusic
bug. The number of music files on our computers ranged from the low end of
1,400
all the way up to a staggering 35,000, and we're sure that some of our
readers could
probably give those numbers a run for their money. And that's why Cluley
advises
that users should turn off any autorun functionalities on their computers
to prevent
the worm from spreading.
W32.Deletemusic affects computers running Windows 2000/95/98/Me/NT/Server
2003/Vista/XP.

Not to many as far as your local chanels probably but I did find a good
variety for the us including some news and weather chanels and some movie
chanels. Canada was really impressive with many of the cbc chanels and
others. Australia had a number of chanels. I haven't looked at the UK but
with 1400 chanels in his data base you should be able to find something
that will entertain you I'm sure. On most of the ones I tried the quality
seemed good and my sighted wife reported that the video was clear.

Judges Reject Appeals From Webcasters

2007-04-18 Thread djc
Judges Reject Appeals From Webcasters
Sites Can Tally Fees Per Listening Hours
POSTED: 6:59 pm PDT April 16, 2007
UPDATED: 6:59 pm PDT April 16, 2007
LAS VEGAS --
Internet radio broadcasters were dealt a setback Monday when a panel of
copyright
judges threw out requests to reconsider a ruling that hiked the royalties
they must
pay to record companies and artists.
A broad group of public and private broadcasters, including radio stations,
small
startup companies, National Public Radio and major online sites like Yahoo
Inc. and
Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, had objected to the new royalties set March 2,
saying they
would force a drastic cutback in services that are now enjoyed by some 50
million
people.
In the latest ruling, the Copyright Royalty Board judges denied all motions
for rehearing
and also declined to postpone a May 15 deadline by which the new royalties
will have
to be collected.
However, they did grant leniency on one point, allowing the webcasters to
calculate
fees by average listening hours, as they had been, as opposed to the new
system of
charging a royalty each time every song is heard by an online listener.
That exemption
counts for last year and this year. After that, the new per-song,
per-listener fee
structure goes into effect.
Many webcasters say the sharply higher royalty fees will put them out of
business.
Talk of the ruling dominated a one-day meeting of Internet radio
broadcasters being
held in Las Vegas alongside the annual conference of the National
Association of
Broadcasters, a group representing local radio and TV stations.
N. Mark Lam, the CEO of Live365 Inc., a privately held company that
aggregates audio
streams from thousands of radio stations and other small webcasters, said
that under
the new royalty rules, there is no industry.
Lam, who joined the venture capital-backed company about two years ago,
said Live365
just barely broke even last year and had about 4.5 million unique listeners
every
month.
Also on Monday, several Internet radio broadcasters announced a campaign to
raise
awareness of the issue and encourage listeners to write to their
representatives
in Congress.
Small broadcasters have received relief from Congress in the past,
benefiting from
a law passed five years ago that gave them a break on royalty rates. The
legislation
allowed them to pay about 12 percent of their revenues instead of having to
calculate
per-song, per-hour rates like larger companies had to.
David Oxenford, a lawyer representing several webcasters, said the next
step was
likely an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit,
but he noted that process could take at least a year. Meanwhile, he said,
the prospects
of successfully getting a court to block the decision of the royalty board
judges
is slim.
SoundExchange, a nonprofit group that collects the online royalties from
webcasters
and distributes them to record labels and artists, hailed the ruling in a
statement
and said it looked forward to working with Internet radio companies in
order to ensure
that the industry succeeds.
Jonathan Potter, the head of the Digital Media Association, which
represents several
large webcasters including Yahoo, AOL and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN network,
said his
group was not currently in talks with SoundExchange but may be soon. He
said his
group and other webcasters would be turning to Congress, where he said he
sees a
lot of legislative support.
The royalties in question only cover digital transmissions of music, and
don't apply
to terrestrial radio stations, as traditional radio play is seen as a
benefit for
record labels by promoting sales of recorded music. Both digital
broadcasters and
regular radio stations pay a separate royalty to the publishers and
composers of
music.

I've received a couple of complaints regarding the xm file I offer.
Generally the issue is that people are using the wrong player or an older
player that won't handle uvox files. I suggest that you update to the
latest winamp and that should fix the issue. All the xm streams I offer and

Re[2]: Shoutcast, Live 365, or something else?

2007-02-09 Thread djc
Well that's the easiest way to go or you can load mp3 files but what it
does with those is it creates a small header file and puts those in the
same folder as the mp3 file. If your me and you have like I do some 20,000
songs then you probably don't want to do the mp3 way. If they had put these
header files in it's own folder I wouldn't care but they don't. Each header
file is like 1K but it annoys me to have them all over my mp3 collection so
I convert my radio work to the ots format and that works fine. Yah it means
that I maintain 2 librarys and that's a hassle but I've done it this way
for years. Also it's extremely important if your going to convert music to
the ots format that your title and artist info is in correct order because
once your finished converting you will build your play list. I hope this
info has been helpful and if any one wants to hear my show you will be able
to hear the ots software and while Tom doesn't want people to advertise
shows on this list I believe he will forgive this transgression. You can
hear my show if your in the Unighted states from 9 to midnight eastern on
Saturday evenings. You can either use:
http://paulmerrell.net:9212 or
http://sc5.spacialnet.com:15284
which is Bill Sparks station The Legend. If you want to hear pure ots then
you want the Paul Merrell server since that's the server I broadcast on. I
put a loop up 5 minutes before the show starts to give people a chance to
tune in. Also Please note that this is a high bandwidth stream so dialup
won't work. I take your emails and msn messages for songs. I think I forgot
to give you the name of the show. It's djc's Jukebox and I invite all of
you to listen. We have a lot of fun on that show. Thanks and I hope all
this info will help you make a wise choice because the Otsdj software is
quite pricey but well worth the money I feel and that's why I use it.

I'd replace the cdrom drive. There not to expensive any more and you can
get a good dvd burner.

 Hi, this is Steve. In 2004, I purchased a SONY CD-RW CRX216E.
Sometimes, when I put a CD in the drive, it is not read. It sounds
like it wants to read the CD, then stops. It also occurs with CDs
that were previously read. I used AutoFix to try to find the
 problem, which it could not.
Is this a sign that my drive is giving up, or are there suggestions
on what I might try to do to resolve my problem? By the way, I made
 sure the CDs were clean.
 Thank you for any help.

Re[2]: midi to wave/mp3

2007-01-11 Thread djc
All midis clip at the end of the sound because it's just playing a set of
instructions. You could make it smooth by fading out the midi after
recording it to mp3 or playing the song live with a midi keyboard fading
the sound at the end.

There actually is a pay program midi to mp3 which does this very easily.
Only problem I've had with it is that it will clip the end of the sound.
So I suppose you can counter act this by recording extra space and some
unheard midi message such as a pedal up down a few seconds after the
actual sound stops. I haven't tried this and I haven't registered the
program.

Hi,

You can't convert midi to wav or mp3. All midi is is a set of musical
instructions that your soundcard works with.

You could use total recorder, or something like goldwave, turn on the
what
you hear option in your soundcard's volume, and record it that way
through
the soundcard.

Yes Dean you can do this and the way you bring both together is you tell

New chip provides high-end sound

2006-12-05 Thread djc
New chip provides high-end sound
Posted 12/5/2006 9:20 AM ET
By Peter Svensson, The Associated Press
NEW YORK - Veteran audio engineer Tony Bongiovi, who once worked with Jimi
Hendrix,
has been disappointed for decades that the equipment most people used to
listen to
music couldn't replicate the high-quality sound heard in the studio.
Now, he thinks he's created an answer: a technique for sound processing
that's making
its debut in a JVC car stereo this week.
Speakers are such a primitive device, but with digital technology we can
overcome
that, Bongiovi said. (If his name sounds familiar to those who know music
but nothing
of audio engineering, it's because his second cousin is Jon Bon Jovi.)
The technique, which Bongiovi calls the Digital Power Station for the
studio
he once
built in a converted power station in Manhattan, can be described as a very
sophisticated
equalizer. It adapts intelligently to the music to give even cheap speakers
a full,
robust sound and compensate for the deficiencies of the listening space.
This is accomplished by digital signal processing, a technology found in
virtually
all consumer audio products. But according to Bongiovi, it has never been
employed
in this way.
Bongiovi and his company, Bongiovi Acoustics of Port St. Lucie, Fla., first
built
a device using analog components to produce the effect, but the unit was
the
size
of a refrigerator. He turned to Glenn Zelniker, a specialist in digital
signal processing,
to program a chip to do the same thing.
The technique really allows the sound source to be heard very well, loud
and clear
and intelligible in a very, very compromised sonic environment, Zelniker
said.
The chip, an off-the-shelf digital signal processor from Motorola spinoff
Freescale
Semiconductor, is programmed specifically for each car model, taking into
account
the characteristics of its speakers and interior. It has more than 120
points of
adjustment.
It's so precise that the hatchback Ford Focus has a different tuning from
the regular
one, Bongiovi said.
In a demonstration for a reporter in a Ford Focus with standard speakers,
the JVC
KD-S100 car stereo produced radically different sound quality with the
Digital Power
Station chip engaged. The sound swelled to give an impression of space, and
all instruments
came through clearer.
The bass was very rich and free of distortion, a phenomenon Bongiovi
attributes both
to the chip knowing exactly how much the four speakers can take, and to
synchronizing
them to act as one virtual subwoofer.
The stereo will cost $700 to $1,000 installed, depending on the make of the
car,
and will be available only at dealers, since the chip requires programming
(via a
CD) to match the make of the car.
While the technology is particularly suited to a noisy environment like a
car, Bongiovi
sees it as having much wider applications, though there are no specific
plans for
taking the chip to consumer gadgets beyond the car stereo.
In another demonstration, he had a computer play the movie King Kong
through an inexpensive JVC home-theater-in-a-box speaker setup. Using
software on
the computer to run the Digital Power Station algorithm, the sound quality
improved
tremendously. With no real increase in volume, sounds surfaced that
previously were
unnoticed, like the giant gorilla breathing and shuffling his feet. There
was an
overall feeling of theater-like space even in a small room.
While the process may do little for the high-end gear of an audiophile, it
appears
to be very adept at compensating for the weaknesses of cheap speakers. Even
the sound
from the built-in speakers of a flat-panel TV set was improved by Digital
Power Station.
I want people at home to experience what we experience in the studio, and
this is
the only way to do it, Bongiovi said.

to go along with it. This is a hobby, so I don't want to go overboard,
but yet have a great sounding station. Also, I want a service that allows
me to play whatever kind of music or show that I want. I found a service
called Churchquest that offers a windows media streaming service at $8.95
monthly, but it is a Christian service that does not allow secular music
and has no phone support. My Shoutcast server host is great, but I want
to offer my listeners a Windows Media Stream as well.

Note: this service can be in the U. S., Canada, England, or Australia/New

Please allow me a little venting tinme, please.

I purchased Roxio Easy CD DVD creator 6 a long time ago and used it for a
long time. Recently, my system crashed and I had to reinstall Windows XP
Pro, thus losing my copy of the program. I checked with the people who
bought Roxio and they said they no longer support creator six and you
cannot activate it anymore.

You know, they have the right to support or not support anything they
wish, but they do not have the right to not allow a person to lose their
ability to activate a product they purchased legally. It probably would
not be such a hard thing to just reprogram their servers to automatically
activate all old products. this would not hurt anyone, since they are no
longer supporting the product. They told me I could upgrade to EMC 7/8/9,
but the last time I tried to use those products (EMC7), I could not access
it or JAWS would not show any of the menus. I purchased EMC7, but have
never been able to use it.

Does anyone know of a place where I could get an activateless version of
the program. The guy at Veritus (or whatever it is called) said they
previously issued a program that did not have to be activated, but it is
no longer available. This sucks.

Can anyone give me a suggestion of what program can do the things like
ECDVD 6 did as easy as it did?

Thanks. anyA

Having developed a list of more than 400 radio stations as bookmarks, I
appreciated the library list view allowing me to go up and down the list
quickly sampling each station's offering. Perhaps someone with greater
knowledge of Winamps features in it's latest releases might suggest
another way to achieve a similar view without constantly having to go

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the only items in my advance tab are crossfading settings

one that says set defaults.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Dan. It's under the advanced tab and it says disable popup windows.
 That
 should fix it for you.

While we're on the subject of the SQR plugin, how can I keep the

Thanks.

Will give this a try today and report back.

You might try turning off everything in the gap killer. Then go to
the
crossfate tab and make sure the first checkbox is checked. You'll tab
once
and get a value box. I think I have mine set at -8. I had the same
problem
with Chicago Dialog Par I and II.

Hope this helps.

I've been fooling around with it today, and I can't get it to not
fade
at the end of a track, and sometimes it starts the next track too
soon. I've tried the eight presets it comes with, and nothing even
comes close. Gap Killer has no crossfading at all, and everything
else ducks at the end or fades in at the beginning and ducks at the
end. I'm having trouble with a particular song, 4 Non-Blondes,
What's
Goin' On. It always starts the next song when she's still singing
at
 the very end. Any thoughts?
