VLC is amazing for video. However winamp is my audio player and there's no reason at all not to use it if it's what you like. it's not as though audio formats are changing at an alarming rate, and just about anything that winamp won't play out of the box can be ameliorated with a plugin you can download in five seconds. I still don't recommend it for videos generally though as you will come across stuff that inexplicably won't play and finding the right codecs can be a little more of a nuissance. one thing I like about winamp that I haven't really been able to do with VLC is adjust the equaliser. There are a number of bands to play with and its very good if you, like me, tend to listen to weird music where the standard audio settings sometimes don't yield the best results, or old audio recordings where you have to jack up the trebble just to understand what people are saying. - Original Message - From: "joanne" <houseofmusic3...@gmail.com> To: "PC Audio Discussion List" <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> Sent: Thursday, December 24, 2015 10:23 AM Subject: Re: The new version of winamp I strongly disagree that Winamp should just not be used because some of you find it very accessible, as do I, while other players I've tried do not give the info Winamp gives. Re: The new version of winamp
I think it very much depends on what one is doing. I have to say, that I am also in agreement with those who say that winamp is still the best, for the following reasons. 1. especially with the window-eyes app for it, it does give a lot more information than others I have used, such as track percentage when fast-forwarding/rewinding, volume percentage, etc. 2. it seems to have more add-ons for playing various file formats than others, which certainly for someone like myself, who has audio and video files of all different formats, is a big plus. and 3. another big plus for me, is even with out any add-ons, it plays a lot of formats, both old and new, where as a lot of other players have turned there backs on playing older formats, mainly from my point of view, .voc, .au, .iff, .aif, .mod, .xm, and .s3m files. winamp is just about the only thing that will play these now. If you all want to think that Winamp is the best then go right ahead but to me its really like saying that the Cats Whisker was the best thing for radio, you’re really fighting a losing battle. Sure, it will be nice if new life is brought into Winamp but for me its easier to move on and look at other options rather than go on about a lost cause and dwell on the past and what was rather than what is. > On 24 Dec 2015, at 1:05 PM, goshawk on horseback > <goshawk_on_horseb...@fastmail.co.uk> wrote: > > I think it very much depends on what one is doing. > I have to say, that I am also in agreement with those who say that winamp is > still the best, for the following reasons. > 1. especially with the window-eyes app for it, it does give a lot more > information than others I have used, such as track percentage when > fast-forwarding/rewinding, volume percentage, etc. > 2. it seems to have more add-ons for playing various file formats than > others, which certainly for someone like myself, who has audio and video > files of all different formats, is a big plus. > and 3. another big plus for me, is even with out any add-ons, it plays a lot > of formats, both old and new, where as a lot of other players have turned > there backs on playing older formats, mainly from my point of view, .voc, > .au, .iff, .aif, .mod, > .xm, and .s3m files. winamp is just about the only thing that will play > these now. > > Simon > > > - Original Message - > From: "Dane Trethowan" <grtd...@internode.on.net> > To: "PC Audio Discussion List" <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> > Sent: Thursday, December 24, 2015 1:15 AM > Subject: Re: The new version of winamp > > > Naturally! > > I use VLC here and that is just as straight forward and I’m sure there are > other players that others use that are straight forward. > > I’m not saying VLC is the best player either, its all down to preference of > course but to say that other players aren’t straight forward to use just isn’t > true. > > I did buy Winamp Pro, that’s how much I liked Winamp at one time however > that was quite some time ago and since that time Winamp became very bloated > and I started having crashes when I tried to play video, not just on one > machine either and I discovered the incidents of Winamp crashing weren’t > isolated so time to go looking for other players. > > I also enjoy using Windows Media Player and a lot of people I’m sure will > say that this player is straight forward. > > And don’t tell me that Winamp has features that no other player does because > that’s just not true. > > And finally I’ve not tried the latest Winamp for Windows though I have > downloaded the Mac and Android versions so may look at those a little later > on, anyone here tried the Windows version yet? RE: The new version of winamp
Well whether Winamp is the best or not is a matter of opinion, but I can say that I don't know of any other player which has all of the features that I use on a regular basis. Just a few that come to mind are: 1. Ability to play, pause, stop go back a track and go forward a track with one finger of my left hand. This is important to me when I use Winamp to stream and need to use my right hand to control my mixer. 2. The ability to move forward and back in five second increments with one finger. 3. An option to stop playing after the current track in a playlist. 4. The ability to locate a track in Windows explorer and add it to the Winamp playlist, either after the currently playing track or at the end of the playlist. 5. The ability to search for a track in a playlist and move it to after the currently playing track. 6. The ability to delete tracks from a playlist. 7. The ability to save a modified playlist. 8. The ability to cross fade tracks with a configurable plugin. 9. The ability to equalise the volume of all playing tracks with a configurable plugin. 10. The ability to have title information show up in Edcast when streaming. 11. The ability to find the length of a track in time as well as being able to find out the elapsed time and time remaining of a currently playing track. 12. The ability to select a sound card other than the default for the output. 13. The ability to edit and modify ID3 tags in MP3 files. 14. The ability to review tracks in a playlist by arrowing up and down. 15. The ability to search a playlist for tracks containing key words. 16. The ability to press enter on a track in Windows Explorer and have it start playing without the focus moving from Windows Explorer. 17. The ability to set a placemarker in a file when using JAWS. 18. The ability to set bookmarks for streams. 19. The ability to play a wide range of audio formats. 20. The ability to jump to a specific time in a track. 21. The ability to play the last few seconds of a track (possibly a JAWS feature). 22. The ability to easily get information about streams and tracks, such as the bit rate. I'm sure there are other features that don't come to mind immediately. If Dane or anyone else can tell me of another free or low cost player which they know will doo all of the above as well or better than Winamp, I would be willing to give it a try. Re: The new version of winamp
First of all, I can’t answer that question as to what is more accessible because I’ve not played around with Media Players for Windows for quite some time. I do use VLC for Windows and I’m able to access all the functions I need in that player very easily such as the transport functions, file functions and so on. I have used Windows Media Player and I found it a more pleasurable experience to use than I thought it would be mainly because of the excellent amount of Shortcut keys and other goodies it has. So as I’ve already said, claiming that Winamp is the best and most accessible player in the world is a very general statement indeed and I wouldn’t have to look too far to find people who would disagree, I know there’s a whole heap of people out there using Windows Media Player because I’ve spoken to quite a few who have given me tips on that software. VLC users are a plenty and well as there being plenty of iTunes users and so on. > On 24 Dec 2015, at 12:56 PM, Kelly Piercewrote: > > The news is that last week vivendi, which owns Universal Music, bought > a controlling interest in Radio Nomi. Re: The new version of winamp
I've been using Winamp since 1998 and don't intend to stop unless I can find another player that's more accessible and does what i want it to. I'll be interested if and when a new version comes out. You'd have to show me a player that's even better, and that's a tall order. On 12/23/2015 11:03 PM, Dane Trethowan wrote: First of all, I can’t answer that question as to what is more accessible because I’ve not played around with Media Players for Windows for quite some time. RE: The new version of winamp
All I can say is foobar 2000. Yes you have to set it up yourself but once you do it is so customizable that it can beat anything winamp can do. In fact, you can manage multiple playlists at the same time, copy files from windows explorer, and make your won hot keys for every single command in the program including menu bar, context menus, now-playing context menus, and many many more. Here is an article I have been a foobar user for over 4 years. And yes, I still have winamp on my machine and use it form time to time, probably because old habbits die hard. But if I have to do anything for my radio show, or out in my living room where I have tv shows, music, my Howard Stern live streams, karaoke files, and a playlist for when particular guests are over. I can do all of this inside of foobar without having to load playlists over and over. The beauty part is managing multiple playlists in a tab style that makes my life a lot easier. Good luck to you though. If you do find the article of interest, since it's written for the general community I'd be happy to help you out figuring out accessible ways of doing things that the article doesn't cover. http://winamp2foobar.blogspot.com/ I hope you find what you're looking for! -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Barry Chapman Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2015 6:03 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> Subject: RE: The new version of winamp Well whether Winamp is the best or not is a matter of opinion, but I can say that I don't know of any other player which has all of the features that I use on a regular basis.
