Gary,

Just the other day, after the release of the news about the vulnerability in 
version 5.12, I upgraded to the latest, newly-released version, 5.13. so I'm 
not prepared to run tests on earlier versions. But 5.13 definitely will play 
.m4a and .m4b files, and, unless you have some special issue I don't know 
anything about, I'd definitely recommend your using 5.13, rather than 
anything earlier, if only on account of this latest fix.
