Re: My K10D the good news and the bad

I can subscribe to what you say about the grip when shooting vertical.
I, too, am left-eye dominant, but have ended up using my right eye
when shooting vertical. :-(

Wrt: stress of hand, I find the K10D to be several orders of magnitude
better than the *istD. But the neck strap is still a good thing. :-)

Anyone else noticed something like that?

I'm a left eye'd shooter out of necessity and I do tend to find the
grip on the K10D awkward but fortunately it's not my issue here. I
really didn't have a problem shooting the *ist D straight either using
my left eye and I did tend to mostly shoot it off the tripod.
Interesting observations though, I'm really not convinced the K10Ds
ergonomics are that great, I'd love to see a professional assessment
(several Australian universities are offering degrees/diplomas in
Human Factors and Ergonomics) as I find it stresses my hand.

Many thanks to everyone who has helped me out so far. You've all helped me
make a good dent in my quest so far.

Oh, I may be slow to respond this weekend. Got a ton of stuff going on, but
will ocassionally be able to get back to my emails.

Re: New Carl Zeiss lenses for Pentax K mount!

2007-07-06 Thread Peter Lacus
Adam,

big hit in Nikon-land, that's only because the Nikon 50/1.4 is fairly
average in performance not because the Zeiss is legendary in its
performance.

especially when it's Cosina Zeiss...

Yet several of the Cosina-built Zeiss lenses outperform their Contax
predecessors. Notably the ZF 25/2.8(which is an entirely new design) and
 the ZM 21/2.8.

don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Cosina. Actually they are
quite like Pentax and usually offer excellent value for money. But these
Carl Zeiss lenses are far from that - Pentax own Limiteds are much
better value IMO.

BTW Contax(Kyocera)/Cosina doesn't matter, both are building lenses in
some automated factory so I'd expect similar results. The price of
original Zeiss/Leica glass is higher because of the labour cost involved
(hand assembly, testing), while this is perhaps slightly above standard
mass production with fancy name on top of it (an unnecessarily high
price IMHO).

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks Charles.

To everybody: I was joking when reporting me telling the security guy that a
Pentax cannot be a pro camera. I didn't do that, but such a statement came
to mind as so often we hear something alike, here and elsewhere.
On the other hand, I was truly disappointed to see that I was supposed to be
the only pro and the only one harassed there, among hundreds (maybe
thousands) of people recording and shooting.

I couldn'y believe that, as I was the only one among thousands of people in

Sparx (Strategic Portfolio Analysis Research eXperts) are specifically

the stock then cashing in, that's what they do and they do it well.
After they sell their Pentax stock to Hoya Sparx will have made more
net profit out of Pentax during the time that they have held Pentax

all public record. Check the following article and you'll gain some

2007-07-06 Thread Steve Desjardins
The practical consequence of all this for me (fan of Pentax cameras, so
that means the imaging division or whatever the hell they call it) is
that previously Pentax could muddle along, just surviving economially,
and still make stuff. The optimist in me says Hoya will make them pay
more attention and keep up better, the pessimist says as soon as they
don't make enough they're gone ala Konica-Minolta. Since I don't own
shares, the rest is academic for me. I do think about how much it would
cost to rebuild my kit with Nikon, though. ;-(

 Cheers,

Pentax LTD's are an incredible value, costing significantly less than
any other lenses of equivalent quality other than the Voightlanders and
some Nikkor AI-S's. Price against L glass sometime and look how
incredible the LTD's value is.

The Carl Zeiss lenses from Cosina Zeiss are actually a decent value
compared to what their Contax predecessors and Leica competition. Note
the current Zeiss lenses are individually QC'd by Zeiss on Zeiss test
kit located in the Cosina factory in Japan. They're also one of the very
few lens lines produced entirely in Japan or Germany (Cosina is the only
Japanese lens manufacturer to produce all of its lenses in Japan, Zeiss
makes a couple of the ZM line in Germany as Cosina isn't setup to handle
floating elements). Even Leica can't say that (Leica only does finishing
and QC in Germany, base production is elsewhere, IIRC it's Portugal).

Memory Card Problem

it out to dry, it loaded and recorded normally until a few minutes ago.
It looks flat a true, but hesitate to use it again.
Any of ya'll had this happen?

FS: EX+ Super A body, 50/1.4 A lens, 35-105/3.5 A lens

2007-07-06 Thread Joe Wilensky
A few items for sale. Photos available on request.

* Pentax Super A body. EXC+ condition. This camera feels and operates
like new. It's technically the exact same camera as the Super
Program, but it somehow feels like a Super Program Limited in all
black. I can include a standard Pentax strap, along with the deluxe
European Camera of the Year 1983 strap that was available. Front
finger grip, body cap, original Pentax case and instruction manual
included.

Price: $125 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

* Pentax SMC-A 50mm f/1.4, EX condition. Focusing is smooth without
feeling mushy like some A lenses sometimes tend to get. Clear class,
beautiful coatings. Original front and rear caps included.

Price: $95 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

Purchase the Super A with the 50/1.4 for a $200 kit.

Also available:

* Pentax SMC-A 35-105mm f/3.5, EX condition. Pentax
front and rear caps included.

Price: $110 includes shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

there'a very small exhibition of 4 bikes outside the Design Museum in
London at the moment.

http://www.designmuseum.org/exhibitions/current-exhibitions/fixed

Curated by Ben Wilson, industrial designer and bike fanatic, FIXED
looks at the fixed gear bicycle from 1888 to the present day. FIXED is
in the Tank, the museum's riverfront exhibition space and free to view
day or night.

Riding 'fixed' is thought to be a 'pure' way to interact with your
bike, no brakes, no gears - just you and the bike. Fixed gear bikes do
not allow coasting, so the only way to rest at any point is to pedal
slower.

Also on 8 July - watch the Tour de France go across Tower Bridge and
then bring your bicycle to the Design Museum and tell us why you love
it. All contributions will be filmed to form a unique archive of
archive of memories, appraisals

because the bikes are in a glass tank you can't really get a good shot
of them, but here are some of the 1888 bike, which is jolly
interesting and looks quite heavy - look at the chain:

seen him in years but certainly knew him back then and stayed at his
home when it was Alices home, too.

I mention PDML -- he says he lurks and never has posted... I beseached
him to post something from the
weekend. We shall see if he does :) :)

During the week I find out that two local establishments have closed
taht wer dear to the neighborhood.
a tiny meat market less than a block from me and a rather well known
Polish restaurant called Teresa's.

Then there is the ebay nightmare...
1st I sell the Canon EOS film camera and get stiffed on it -- guy never
even answers my email -
then I try to get my final value fee and click on the wrong button which
nullifies my refund (I've
already sent email off about that) and THEN I relist the thing and get
a phony bid - one more
from across the big pond a phony paypal for a larger amoung than the
camera - you know the drill.

Finally, the guy who I designed the book cover for months ago called
he wants to totally redo the front cover.
It's too busy. Mind you, although a lot of folk thought it looked
terrific, I have to confess I thought it
too busy and confusing and I've never really liked his book title
either...

I wish I could talk him out of the idea of a guy with a gold walking
stick walking in the woods and
running into a big boulder... everything is always a rush, of
course... I did the BACK cover over 3 times
and that involved virtually no graphics - just text changes.

It is an op for making some more money but I find it hard to wrap my
creative brain around his concept. Sigh.

all of this is eclipsed by the unexpected passing of another person -
the older sister of one of my very closest friends.
So I'm kinda a mess

 Paul,

I'm just catching up on some old posts. I wish I'd seen this earlier,
but let me heave a sigh of relief and pass on my heartfelt
 congratulations.

Thank Goodness that Grace will be allowed to stay where she's safe,
properly provided for and (most importantly) loved.

 cheers,

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Ann.
The photos are lovely, though. As Paul said, a good job indeed.

Hope you get the book cover sorted.

Re: Hoya outlines Pentax camera plans

Could be. But Konika was notin good stat when they bought Minolta AFAIR.

2007/7/6, Steve Desjardins [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
The practical consequence of all this for me (fan of Pentax cameras, so
that means the imaging division or whatever the hell they call it) is
that previously Pentax could muddle along, just surviving economially,
and still make stuff. The optimist in me says Hoya will make them pay
more attention and keep up better, the pessimist says as soon as they
 don't make enough they're gone ala Konica-Minolta. Since I don't own
shares, the rest is academic for me. I do think about how much it would
cost to rebuild my kit with Nikon, though. ;-(
