Awaiting takeoff
I was in Michigan again right after Thanksgiving for my sister's wedding(see my earlier post for the funny photographer story). Our plane home was delayed so we sat in the airport in Flint for a couple hours I took this out the window while somebody else's plane home was getting ready for takeoff. K10 and FA 28-105. I adjusted the white balance and may have upped the sharpening a little in the conversion. http://cwaters.smugmug.com/gallery/3930734#228209720 By the way, they let me take my tripod as a carry-on. Our big suitcase was too heavy on check-in (odd because it actually had less stuff than when we flew up...) They wanted us to take 5# out or pay a $50 overage charge. The first thing I thought of was the tripod so it came out. Some other stuff came out and was packed into the garment bags. It wasn't until I was in the line at security that I started to think about how many ways the tripod could be used as a weapon... I heard the screener say Oh, that's a bunch of camera lenses... and a really nice camera... tripod... ok, it's all good. I was pleased because I didn't know what we were going to do at that point if they balked. Mark Roberts wrote: One trick I find useful is to shrink my own image to thumbnail size (say, 45 x 60 pixels) before deciding to submit. Most of what you see in the Gallery shows up as a recognizable image of some sort even at that size. No, it isn't universal -- I've seen some that are virtually unrecognizable as thumbnails -- but the majority seem to hold to this rule of thumb. I call this the Stenquist/Cassino property :) Just look at their photos in the Gallery and you'll see strong compositions that contain elements that show up even in the thumbnails. This is very true. I've sent two mails to the Gallery Administrators on this subject, asking for larger thumbnails to improve evaluation at the thumbnails level. I have requested thumbnails of 120 pixels by the longest side. On another note, it would be interesting to hear what kind of bandwidth people have when trying to cast votes. I've looked into the load size of the voting page, and it kinda makes my neck hairs stand on end. A typical load size is 1.5 MB (!!). In addition, it is constructed so that the javascript that controls the display of the full-size images is loaded last of all, which means that if you try to open a full-size image before the page is fully loaded, you'll get error messages saying that some element is null or not an object which means the javascript try to call a function that hasn't been loaded yet. When that happens, you have to reload the whole page. This is also a bit quirky. The only clean way of doing it is to change the submitVoteOnPhotos in the URL into VoteOnPhotos. Or you can go to another page in the application, like your profile page, and then back to the voting. It's poorly designed by any measure. :-( In both cases I have received responses from Carolyn saying thanks for your thoughts, but I have no idea if they've given it any further consideration. No offense, Bruce, but I'm not surprised that didn't make it. It's a very nice shot, but beautiful sunset/landscape shots are so widely represented that one has to be something *really* special to make it. The crescent moon is a nice touch but not enough to elevate it over the thousands of other beautiful, well-composed, well-exposed sunset shots out there (especially considering it's going to be displayed at a size of approximately 540 x 360). One trick I find useful is to shrink my own image to thumbnail size (say, 45 x 60 pixels) before deciding to submit. The Stenquist/Cassino property (good name...) has been pretty much a rule for me for over a decade, in deciding whether to open up a full file or not. Although, recently, I find that I am opening more because I can't actually work out _at all_ from the thumbnail what the full file will be. - Email sent from www.virginmedia.com/email Virus-checked using McAfee(R) Software and scanned for spam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: denied
Joe, Since the votes are submitted to the server with the HTML POST method, you can't just hit F5 or the Refresh button in your browser because that would resubmit the votes you made on the previous five pics. One very simple solution would be a simple HTML link reading reload page which refresh the page without resubmitting the data. But my point was that this problem emerge because the page is heavy to load. Making the voting page smaller and faster to load would take the whole problem away. The main reason for the size of the voting page is that they preload all the full-size images while loading the thumbnail view, whether you want to look at them or not. Landscape-oriented images with 600 pixels vertically will typically have about 900 pixels horizontally. This means five images around 250-300 KB each. The preloading of the images takes place _before_ the loading of the last javascript controlling the voting. That's why it screws up if you get impatient. Loading the full-size images on-demand instead of up-front would make the whole voting page a lot snappier. If, in addition, the thumbnails were a bit larger, it would reduce the need for the full-size images in the voting all together. It would also reduce the load on the web server significantly. Imagine 100 users simultaneously requesting 1.5 MB of data, as opposed to 100-200 KB... I know they have a proxy server set up, but still. However, increasing the thumbnail size will impact the web application on many levels. It's no small job... :-( Jostein Joe Tainter wondered: You expected Pentax to do it how? when I wrote: In addition, it is constructed so that the javascript that controls the display of the full-size images is loaded last of all, which means that if you try to open a full-size image before the page is fully loaded, you'll get error messages saying that some element is null or not an object which means the javascript try to call a function that hasn't been loaded yet. When that happens, you have to reload the whole page. This is also a bit quirky. The only clean way of doing it is to change the submitVoteOnPhotos in the URL into VoteOnPhotos. Or you can go to another page in the application, like your profile page, and then back to the voting. -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It's true that I'm interested in your oppinions as photographers, but I'd also like to share the pleasure of enjoying colours and calm light with you. Well, they can't take your stuff from you BUT...Most times by the time you get to the screeners you've waited a while and you're not inclined to go back to your car or house to deposit the offending gack. My DS and Sandisk Ultra II SD cards - incompatible somehow?
I thought I had a bum card, which I've started the RMA process on. In the interim I bought ANOTHER Sandisk UltraII (different store, different style of card so it's not the same batch of cards) and I'm getting the same annoying behavior. When I'm at a concert, I'll be shooting in bursts of 3-5 exposures at a time. After the burst there is a preview of the last image shot. Sometimes, for no good reason, it will freeze on that last image - and the write light will stay on. Finally, after half a minute or more, I'll see a message image was not saved and if I'm lucky the camera powers down but sometimes it just freezes until I (no, really!) pop open the SD door or pop open the battery compartment to reset the camera. Sometimes after doing this very very rash maneuver, I'll regain control of the camera and can continue to use the card. But sometimes I'll get card error and then that card is done for the night. I've two different ultraII cards I was attempting to use last night and each behaved in the same way after about 100 exposures. I put in my Kingmax 60x card from my Treo so I'd have something for the rest of the evening and I managed 380 shots without a single error. So here's the $64,000 question: Does anyone here use Sandisk UltraII 1gig cards in their DS? If so, have you ever had any problems with them? I've already gotten an RMA generated for one of the cards, so even though I don't think it will help much, I'm sending it in for a replacement. It doesn't make sense that they'd both be bad cards. But it also doesn't make sense that there is a compatibility issue. So I'm still trying to figure out what the hell is going on. Formatting them on the Mac, I can fill them, copy to/from, all day without issue. But the DS also works beautifully with anyone else's SD cards so it's not really clear to me what's broken or how to proceed. Ideas, anyone? -Charles -- Charles Robinson - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Minneapolis, MN http://charles.robinsontwins.org -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: DIGITAL SURVEY RESULTS
On 03/12/07, Cotty, discombobulated, unleashed: So what have I learned? See separate reply to this email. I have learned that marking a piece of paper with little notches next to numbers makes my eyes go funny. Or maybe that was the wine... I think question 4 surprised me: - 4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera? 6 % have owned one for about 6 months 10% have owned one for about 1 year 20% have owned one for about 2 years 32% have owned one for about 3 years 18% have owned one for about 4 years 4 % have owned one for about 5 years 4 % have owned one for about 6 years - The median is about 3 years - I somehow thought this might be shorter. I suppose a couple of years ago it would have been. In a couple of years from now? But it was question 6 that caught my eye the most: 6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ? 8 % have had their latest toy for 1 month 2 % have had their latest toy for 2 months 2 % have had their latest toy for 3 months 6 % have had their latest toy for 4 months 1 % have had their latest toy for 5 months 8 % have had their latest toy for 6 months 2 % have had their latest toy for 9 months 52% have had their latest toy for 1 year 14% have had their latest toy for 2 years 2 % have had their latest toy for 3 years 2 % have had their latest toy for 4 years -- The vast majority have had their latest and greatest for a relatively short length of time. But I suppose with the cost of these things coming down, it's only natural for them to be purchased more readily, whereas only a couple of years ago, the cost might have been just the wrong side of prohibitive. Now they are well within reach of most, and it seems most are buying them. And maybe hanging onto them longer - only 20% said their first DSLR was now obsolete. I thought maybe 50% but hey, we're not as fickle as we used to be... I'm not sure of there's anything to be gained from this, but at least it gave me something to do on My day off. Hey Godders, I've bought a Voigtlander 28mm f 1.9 Ultron lens in 39mm screw.
