Re: m645 advice - was Re: Any one get any photo stuff from under the tree
The M645 is a delightful camera. The original only went to 1/500 shutter speed, but that was boosted to 1/1000 with the introduction of the M645 1000S. The ultimate, IMO, was the M645Pro which had interchangeable backs so you could swap film in the middle of a shoot. The battery spec is a silver oxide, but there is an alkaline substitute for it. If the battery dies completely, you can still keep shooting with the mechanical shutter at 1/60th. The film inserts are labeled for 120 or 220. Be sure to use the right film for the insert - the film plane is a little different for each one as the 220 insert compensates for the lack of a paper backing that runs the entire length of the film. You might also look at the Shepard/Polaris light meter. It's not as fancy or well known as Sekonic or Gossen but does the job measuring reflected and incident light - both ambient and flash. It's accurate and consistent - basic model is on sale at BH for about 160USD. -p On Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 9:28 PM, Jon Paul Schelter jonpaul.schel...@gmail.com wrote: I've been thinking about an upgrade to a K20D, D300 or D700... Unfortunately, that included Dave and Cotty... ;) I was in my ISP's webmail app yesterday and noticed that I had a ton of messages in the PDML folder I use to keep my IN box uncluttered when I'm away from home or my main PC is down. The mail app filter had been turned on so the rest of the messages (2500) were being stored for me on the server... It's been a busy month with Christmas, football season (busy time at work), kids stuff, etc. You all know the December drill. We also have two anniversaries and at least four birthdays in December in our family. On top of that all that, my father passed away quite suddenly and we had to take a road trip up to Michigan for the funeral. It's a two thousand mile round trip. I hadn't posted anything to the list about my father yet. Our relationship wasn't by any means a normal one and I'm OK with his passing. At the risk of sounding morbid and unseemly, if you're going to die from lung cancer, getting it all over with in a week is likely the preferable way to go about it. Anyway, I think I'm getting the messages now and I *might* have some more time to read them too. Unless, of course Carolina looses and the Falcons win tomorrow (American Football)... then we might have another football game to look forward to at work... Pentax in the news
I know many of you have said that you have sworn off any contact with Outdoor Photography, but I find that even the most basic of how to and what to avoid articles give me some things to think about... The current (Jan/Feb 2009) issue has two mentions of Pentax. In one article Kerrick James talks about photography in Alaska. Early in the article he talks about a rare 250-600mm f/5.6 ED zoom (hmmm, I thinks to myself). Then a bit later he acknowledges that he is a rare pro shooter who has used Pentax optics and bodies in both formats since the very beginning. Then goes on to discuss the K20D briefly, with special mention of the weather-sealed DA* lenses. The K20D also gets equal billing in a discussion of the major DSLR's and their suitability for shooting BW. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I thought PDML was very quiet and put it down to the festive season. Re: Pentax in the news
Outdoor Photography is rare in being a US Photography magazine with worthwhile content. -- M. Re: m645 advice - was Re: Any one get any photo stuff from under the tree
I used to carry a Gossen incident + variable angle reflected adapter with the 6x7 and the hasselblad (no metered prisms), but in my last days of medium format I started using also a digital PS from Canon to get a little closer to where I wanted to go. mixing a good incident reading with digital preview would be my choice if I ever return to medium format. I used a borrowed M645 once and liked the camera very much. but the Hasselblad was chosen due to changeable backs and leaf shutters. Very good camera, post us some test pics... I'm going to need a light meter, I guess, although I *imagine* that I can use my *istDS to give me an EV. Yep. That's what I do with my Pentax 67 with non-meter prism. I use a DSLR as a light meter. Since I usually shoot slide film in the 67, the expose to the right histogram technique for setting digital exposure suits my style well. GESO: Hookers 'n' Blow in Minneapolis
No, no... it's the name of a band. I did something this time which I've never before done at a concert - I shot entirely in RAW mode. Wow. The things you can do with white balance and color correction are just out of this world compared to what your options are with a JPEG file. Wow! Of course, I only got 199 images on a 2-gig card rather than the 5-600 I would have otherwise gotten. But, I was otherwise amazed at what I could get away with. In the following photo, most of the light on this guy (Adam Levy) was yellow. YELLOW. I left a little bit of the yellow in because I didn't want the image to look TOO cold, but for the most part, just a touch of the neutral dropper in Lightroom made this image actually usable. I was quite pleased. Gotta get me some more big big cards - I'm going to shoot like this more often. Re: DA*60-250 f/4
Jack Davis wrote: Do you suppose we really don't NEED all the lenses we think we do? NA! Depends on what you're shooting. I shoot mostly auto racing. Even when you have credentials to get onto the hot side of the fences, you still have some geometries and distances you can't affect. For example, there's one particular corner at Road Atlanta where I'll use all of the following focal lengths: 400, 300, 200, 100, 50. Each gets different aspects of things. The 400 lets me isolate a driver in a car in one part of the corner, and just the car's cab in a different part of the corner. The 300 works for most or all of one car depending on where it is in the corner. The 200 works for 1.5 to two cars in most of the corner, and three to four in another part of the corner. The 100 lets me get packs of cars (or parts of packs) as they navigate the corner in a clump. The 50 lets me show the cars and the crowd or a bit of the terrain. Each has its role. However, obviously, motorsports shooting is pretty specialized and much more constrained than a lot of genres of photography. -- Thanks, DougF (KG4LMZ) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I think that in order to really take full advantage of your lenses and to permit their all but instantaneous use, you should have each mounted on its own K20D. Appears you, also, need an assistant standing by to shove each set up in your hands as called for. My suggestion that we may think we need more lenses than we actually do, was with a forcefully tucked tongue in cheek. ;=) Jack --- On Fri, 12/26/08, Doug Franklin jehosep...@mindspring.com wrote: From: Doug Franklin jehosep...@mindspring.com Subject: Re: DA*60-250 f/4 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Date: Friday, December 26, 2008, 11:49 AM Jack Davis wrote: Do you suppose we really don't NEED all the lenses we think we do? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Central California Winter
Joseph, I just asked the guys here in the office, they all agree, I AM in Fortaleza... or they're as lost as I am ;-) I decided against placing my photos in pages other than mine - PUG is the only acceptable (is that a word???) alternative. That decision is rather old, and the home page I had at the time is long gone - so there are only two photos by this friend of yours online... not hard to find at all. :-) Spent parts of my life (so far) in Belem (BR), Manaus (BR), Salvador (BR), Fortaleza (BR), Braga (PT), Orlando (USA) and Atlanta (USA) - not counting the places I drove through or stood just a few weeks. I'm back in Fortaleza (2nd round) since 2001, thanks at least in part to the birth of my first son, a new start in business, the birth of my first daughter, some health issues... and another new start on a different business. I'm just about to resume traveling for some time. During those years I did time as teacher (basic physics and photography), computer tech, professional photographer, tour conductor, travel agency supervisor... and did some small amount of firearms tuning. Hobbies? Reading, progessive rock, combat shooting, kayaking, scuba diving, building scale models, radio and microwave antennas. Did some research into world war 1 2 airplanes and firearms to support my scale model adventures, then added modern small firearms to understand how to get the most out my 45 in the range. No, photography is far more than a hobby.. and I'm about to place my photos online again - in the next two weeks if everything works fine. That's how many photos we have submitted for the PDML photo book so far (I just uploaded my two contributions). That means we're about 40-50 percent of the way there. There's no set number, but we're probably going to limit it to a maximum of 120 pages and a minimum of 80, with half a dozen or so devoted to text (the 2008 quotes list and an introduction, etc.) Of course, we have another month to go for submissions, assuming it doesn't fill up sooner, but I still encourage everyone to get their entries in as soon as possible. http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook.php -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO: Hookers 'n' Blow in Minneapolis
Charles, there are some quick and dirty photo jobs those friends and I get now and then, in wich we just shoot like madmen, covering all angles we can of some meetings. Using JPGs our work is done as soon as we end shooting and dump the cards' contents. Using raw we just can't do that. Since we can't rely on good lights, shooting in raw allows much better images - at the cost of some time at the pc. Even then I'm using raw more and more. If I borrow the Xti to try some serious photo, it's done in raw anyway - and I'll stay at the pc the time it takes to finish. Lucky me, that friend is very good with photoshop and lightroom.
