I like the older scan better, although it does look a little
over-processed & the skin tones aren't as natural.

She was only 19 and was managing the store for her Russian boyfriend.
She asked me to shoot some pics of her wearing the store’s fashions.
I did, but not very well. My lighting was a mix of daylight balanced
incandescents and strobes, and the best I could achieve was flat
lighting. And she couldn't smile. Not even little. Shot with the
Pentax 6x7 and the 165/4 leaf shutter lens. Never got a decent scan
of the negs after multiple tries. Don’t even remember what scanner I
used. So today, i tried again with the 850 Pro flatbed.. Here’s one
of the scans from back in the day:

neglected to retouch the panty peek, but it’s kind of cute.) :

I'm guessing that this is a way to keep DA lenses relevant on the Full Frame.

I'd have thought that the camera would know when a crop-factor lens was mounted;
all the DA lenses have the lens ID chip to identify themselves to the camera.

So what will happen when you mount a DA lens? will there be some way for the
viewfinder to show a magnified view of just the central portion of the field?

I think Nikon puts a boundary line around the cropped image, (using an
LCD panel, I assume). There's no reason Ricoh wouldn't do something
similar. Canon of course takes a different tack.

Does the new one have a good reputation as far as ink usage, not getting
clogged, etc?

So this is kinda beside the point but related. I just got a missive from
Adorama about the Canon Pixma Pro-100 13x19 inch printer.

I've been using a Pixma iX6520 that I thought I got a fantastic deal on a couple of
years ago, it's only 4 color, (CMYK), but except for a occasionally disappointing
B renditions, it produces nice detailed prints, that pretty accurately
reflect what I see on my monitor.

The Pixma Pro-100 has a litany of features that I will never use...

However it does have one that I really want, it's an 8 color printer that has three
dedicated B cartridges.

The kicker, it's selling for $49.00 with free shipping, and the package
includes 50 sheets of 13x19 Canon semi gloss paper. I checked the specs it's
not even cheep paper!

The entire bundle is less that half the price of a full set of inks for my
present printer!

I have to keep repeating, I'm happy with my current printer.

I'm happy with my current printer.

I'm happy with my current printer.

I'm happy with my current printer.

Geso Crazy Horse in the Black Hills

2015-10-24 Thread Donald Guthrie
On the subject of statues carved out of the hillside this one is among
the controversial set. Is it the hopeless dream that will be never
completed, another hideous artwork, or a great tribute to Native
Americans who have blessed the project. It is being done entirely with
private funding & contributions. But many complain that more money has
been spent on the observation point than on the carving.

These photos were all taken in September 2015 from the observation
building which is a mile from the statue.

He stood stock still for several seconds. I crouched to get a better
angle and he flinched so I stopped. Fired off a few shots and then he
skittered off into some brush. Watched me warily for several seconds
and went deeper into the brush, and that was it.

One doesn't often see rabbits in broad daylight in the open like that.

I hesitated showing this because I wish it were sharper (I think
autofocus locked on to some grass or something) but I guess this will
do. Very enjoyable memory for me!

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Stone Mountain and Mount Rushmore were also started with private
funding. I haven't read the history's and don't remember if any
Government actually stepped in with money for either of those either.

The Crazy Horse carving would be the most technically difficult, with
the large stone bridge of his forearm, and fully realized horses head
and for legs. Rushmore was seriously abbreviated due to funding running
out, but they stopped at a point, where in my opinion, it makes for a
better sculpture than if it had been completed.

Maybe if they did the same thing with Crazy Horse with the subject
fading into the mountainside with just the hint of his horse and forearm
it would work.

I believe Mount Rushmore had federal funding from the beginning.

Re: A side-by-side Pixel Shift Resolution comparison with 77mm Limited atf/11

The lettering on the wire appears (to me) a tiny bit crisper in the
pixel shift version.

Limited atf/11

My K-3II arrived today and so I had to try out the Pixel Shift
Resolution during afternoon break. Found an obliging dusty rack of
electrical wire that agreed to serve as my subject. The 77mm f/1.8
limited is a very sharp lens (as anyone who has one will tell you).

What you see in the link below is an image blown up to 100% (actual
pixels). Each is an 863 pixel x 994 pixel crop of the full 6016 x 4000
pixel image.

Conditions: Same exposure (2 sec. f/11, ISO 100) focused manually,
shutter fired with the 12 second self-timer. The only thing that
changed between shots was that I turned on Pixel Shift Resolution
(without moving anything). On the left is a standard out of camera
JPEG and on the right the JPEG produced with Pixel Shift Resolution.

Click on it with your browser cursor to see it at 100%:
http://www.antiqueauto.org/assets/PSRComparison.jpg

At least for cooperative subjects, it looks (to me) like all my lenses
just magically got significantly better.

I'd have thought that the camera would know when a crop-factor lens was mounted;
all the DA lenses have the lens ID chip to identify themselves to the camera.

So what will happen when you mount a DA lens? will there be some way for the
viewfinder to show a magnified view of just the central portion of the field?

Adorama just sent me a deal that's almost impossible to refuse.

2015-10-24 Thread Bipin Gupta
For Folks owning Canon Printers help is on hand for good 3rd Party Ink
Suppliers at a fraction of the cost of Canon Ink Cartridges.
A full set of 5 or 6 Ink Tanks can cost approx half the cost of a new Printer.

I bought the Canon Pixma 6470 for INR 4499 ($ 70) in Bangalore. Bought
the Filled Ink Cartridges for $ 1 each from Ali Express (or Ali Baba
com the equvalent of eBay in China).

Also bought a set of (6) empty refillable Ink Cartridges with Auto
Reset Chips for $ 7. My Printer is a 5-cartridge one so I can use the
extra cartridge as a replacement in case one fails. So now I can go on
filling the cartridges. The ARC (auto reset chip) transmits Ink Levels
to my Laptop.

Note: My cartridges are for the Asian region - identified by the
Cartridge nos. So please specify your cartridge # correctly. North
America
will have the same cartridge with another #. The trick here
is the Chip Code used by Canon. Each Cartridge has a Chip on it.

I bought all the Cartridges while I was in Canada. Shipping was Free.

I tried one set of Cartridges as soon as I came to Bangalore. Works
beautifully. There could be a very slight color shift, but since I use
a Lab for all my prints, it does not bother me. The Lab gives me 13
glossy or mat prints size 6 x 4 inch for $ 1, which is far far cheaper
than the print from my Printer.

Here are the resources should you wish to try Ali Express:-

We don't know that for sure yet, Ricoh isn't saying and the camera was
only available under glass. The green button was available on the PZ-1
and it had an aperture simulator, so that's not evidence. Time will
tell. Based on the visible user interface, the dedicated record button
for movies is gone too, but it still has a movie mode, (looks like they
went to a switch around one of the mode dials). I wish they'd switched
to Olympus' solution to a locking mode dial, and put the metering
selection switch back.

It appears that the aperture stimulator is gone forever.
So it goes.
One hopes the redundant ISO control is programmable.
It appears to have a PC socket, which is nice, and increasingly rare.
The screen articulation is really cool, one hopes it is reasonably
robust as well.
The rear ergonomics suck. The 4 way controller is way too low, and I
would prefer shooting buttons rather than playback buttons on the
right side, but that's just me.
It's too bad, because it looks like they are going into production
with it.

This won't stop me from buying one, more than likely.

The review was helpful, but still didn't have a long term assessment, on
reliability ink usage etc. My current printer has about the same
characteristics as my HP wide carriage printer, that jammed with no
support from HP, I get a fare number of prints if I print regularly, if
I do a couple of 8x10 prints a week or let the printer sit for 20 weeks,
ink usage seems to be the same, sadly. I've never had the iX6520 clog,
but I have had to run the roller cleaning routine after a period of
prolonged disuse. So far it's been pretty good, for a cheap wide
carriage printer.

Perhaps the crop setting allows you to shoot in APS-C format even with

I think Nikon puts an IR remote sensor on the back of some of it's
select models, maybe Canon does too. I'd consider it a Pro feature
especially as one wouldn't want to comprimise the weather sealing to use
a wired remote in some circumstances.

Yep. Green button. I like the infrared panel on the back also. Don't
need it on the front unless putting yourself in the picture. But
firing the camera from a remote without touching the camera is
important for PSR, or long exposure times.

I'm guessing that the unmarked dial works in concert with the other
right dial and takes that functionality away from the "regular" front
& rear dials, which should save wear and tear on them.

These photos were all taken in September 2015 from the observation

The Pixma Pro-100 has a litany of features that I will never use...

However it does have one that I really want, it's an 8 color printer

The kicker, it's selling for $49.00 with free shipping, and the

The entire bundle is less that half the price of a full set of inks

That was one reason I started photo printing when I first got into digital.

But, dealing with a reputable online print outfit, I don't feel I've given
up any of that control.
After perfecting the image, converting to jpeg, submitting on line &
advising no alterations to the file, I've got all the control I need to get
prints as good as I get on any of my Epson printers.

The key here is obviously using a known, reputable online outfit and
specifying no alterations to the submitted file.

The sculpture has brought thousands (millions) out to look at the Black Hills.

Oops! I did respond, briefly. But I sent it from the wrong mailbox and so the
PDML server bounced it. I was being discreet but I was;t going for that level
of discretion!
The side conversation Boris and I were having related to the security situation
there, and here I was just intending to project an implicit concern for one of
our PDML family who lives under such conditions day-after-day. As I said in my
(bounced) message, When we were there in Spring 2014 it was a relatively calm
period but even so it was clear that Boris and others were maintaining a level
of vigilance that would be hard for anyone to maintain for long periods.

Thanks, Frank! It was a ton of fun doing this shoot!

Technical details: Pentax K-5 with DA*16-50/2.8 (@26mm), 1/4 sec at
f/8 and ISO 400 (manual exposure). We had one of those newfangled
multi-LED studio lights at camera right, high. And I used the
AF540-FGZ on a cable near the floor at left. I set the flash for two
stops underexposure. All this was arrived at by trial and error, by
the way, because I basically don't know what I'm doing in the studio.
But I knew the effect I wanted – hence the 1/4 second shutter speed
;-) Alas, the zombie in the center of the photo moved far too much
during the exposure, so I pasted in her face from a separate shot.

Re: PESO - Constructed Spaces

2015-10-24 Thread Bulent Celasun
Strong angles, nice contrasts.

Your subject matter invites a closer look to "us".
What do we want?
Enclosure? Safety?
What is it that even makes us miss a cage?

I can go on. But I will not.

I liked your image because it pushed some neglected buttons.
