There are cultures out there that don't really have a definition of it.
There are cultures that have what we consider children being married off

Whose right? We see ourselves as correct, but without a lot of moral

As for paranoia(s) in our society, - I think some of those mentioned here

Feeding paranoias can yield profits: either monetary or political (which,

In a world where images are taken and immediately shared on social media etc, I
initially wondered where such a camera has a place in 2016. These images are
very different and really offer something new.

I particularly like this cyan image and (although it moves away from the
printed image size intended) I can imagine this printed at poster size in a
gallery. Very interesting.

The light conditions allow the flowers to really stand out against the dune
sand. A very pleasing composition.

BTW, our local Orchid expert (Jimmy Rogers) said he knows about those Orchis
ground orchid species which occur in profusion all over Europe but said we
don't have anything quite like them here. He has a huge collection of
equatorial forest species & is off to Ecuador on a sort of "Orchid Tour"

bring him back. So I took the Metro north Hudson line, which twice on

a reverse commute for me. Took the train to Beacon early so I could
wander arounda bit a bit of a workout... the town's main drag is up

with a delicious lunch and ice cream for desert... minimal street

Yep, the PUG rules have always allowed third party equipment provided
lens or body is Pentax. So, Boris - go for it!

As for the Annual, the rules on Mark's site state:

"Images must be taken with a Pentax or Ricoh camera/lens (preferably,
both camera and lens but we're a bit flexible...)"

So it seems if you ask Mark/Doug/Bill nicely, you can submit to the
Annual as well :-)>

The statue in the foreground of #3 is George Washington - might be a

Hello there...

My brother brought me Leica to m43 adapter by Panasonic. I also have

walk today. It turns out that infinity focus is at about 15 m (beyond
10 m mark on lens focus scale, but quite far from infinity mark). This
is not good, but beside that, pictures come out just fine.

Using this lens even at f1.2 and getting accurate focus is
extraordinarily easy... The view finder (being really nice and
comfortable for me EVF) shows in-focus transition really clearly.
Also, on-demand magnification and focus peaking help a lot.

Here are some pictures to back up my words with actions:

Now, only if PDML elders would permit such a blasphemy and let me post
PUGs or even for PDML annual...

I believe that according to the PUG rules, images need to be done with
at least one major piece of Pentax gear, either body or lens.
I will let the truly old people decide if by extension, this should
apply to the PDML Annual.

Perhaps Mark and Doug could rule on that...

Re: Some people are just crazy

2016-05-22 Thread Bill

On 5/22/2016 10:53 AM, Igor PDML-StR wrote:

Paul, your comment had me thinking for the past few days about a deeper
aspect/corollary: Is my own judgement of those people who keep
requesting the takedown of those photos akin that very behavior that
caused my reaction?
My first thought was: Paul might be right in pointing that out.
But no, there is a big difference (even though it might seem subtle at
first).

Indeed, a lot of our views of what is acceptable and what is not is
based on one's moral code, which is not absolute, and depends on the
geography, time, culture, group of the population, etc. And who is the
judge whose moral code is superior? (That's a valid question, and I have
my answers to that, but I don't this discussion to digress that way.)

My reaction is not about the differences in the moral code. Rather,
it is based on the common aspect ("denominator") of their and my moral
code: pedophilia is not normal.

Just to throw some gasoline and a match into the discussion, define
pedophilia?
There are cultures out there that don't really have a definition of it.
There are cultures that have what we consider children being married off
and having kids.

Whose right? We see ourselves as correct, but without a lot of moral
authority.

But seeing in a photo of a naked kid and

man signs of pedophilia is a symptom of abnormality that has nothing to
do with the moral code. That's what falls under the definition of
_paranoia_. And I might be slightly in the classification, but I think
_paranoia_ is included in the category "crazy".

Bingo. And this is the big lie that has been foisted on us. I blame
9/11. All it took to change America from a strong and vibrant nation to
one that was afraid of it's own shadow was a bloody nose and a
government that was more than willing to use that slap in the face as a
way to sell us a great big steaming pile of paranoia on a plate.
They sold us that the big camera was a tool of the bad people (a
falsehood we ate up willingly), and that by extension the person behind
the camera was also a bad person. The complication is that we know that
the bad guys are brown people with bushy beards who scream Allah Akbar
before blowing themselves up.
Those aren't the people who carry big cameras, so they had to feed us
another lie, which was that people who carry them are pedophiles.

Pity the middle aged white male, who was the inadvertent target of that one.
Now that we know that people who have cameras are both predominantly
white males and pedophiles, it becomes very easy to see pedophilia in a
picture such as the one under discussion.

I guess ultimately we can blame it on bin Laden, but that is too easy.
We really have ourselves to blame because we lost that thing that is
absolutely required to have a cohesive society.
We lost the ability to trust each other, and for that, we can point
squarely at our leaders who saw a way to drive a wedge between us and
show themselves as the ones to trust, and we can blame ourselves for
believing the lies that they told us.

sorry for moving towards politics.

bill

Yes, there is another aspect that is related just to the acceptance (or
lack of such) of naked body in the photos. That indeed is related
to the differences in the moral code, but as much as I might disagree
with some puritans, that's not what I was referring to. And this is an
important distinction.

disparage others because their religion or skin color is different but
we think it's perfectly okay to mock those whose moral code differs from

Re: Some people are just crazy

2016-05-22 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Paul, your comment had me thinking for the past few days about a deeper
aspect/corollary: Is my own judgement of those people who keep requesting
the takedown of those photos akin that very behavior that caused my
reaction?

My first thought was: Paul might be right in pointing that out.
But no, there is a big difference (even though it might seem subtle at
first).

Indeed, a lot of our views of what is acceptable and what is not is based
on one's moral code, which is not absolute, and depends on the geography,
time, culture, group of the population, etc. And who is the judge whose
moral code is superior? (That's a valid question, and I have my answers to
that, but I don't this discussion to digress that way.)

My reaction is not about the differences in the moral code. Rather,
it is based on the common aspect ("denominator") of their and my moral
code: pedophilia is not normal. But seeing in a photo of a naked kid and
man signs of pedophilia is a symptom of abnormality that has nothing to do
with the moral code. That's what falls under the definition of _paranoia_.
And I might be slightly in the classification, but I think _paranoia_ is
included in the category "crazy".

Yes, there is another aspect that is related just to the acceptance (or
lack of such) of naked body in the photos. That indeed is related
to the differences in the moral code, but as much as I might disagree with
some puritans, that's not what I was referring to. And this is an
important distinction.

Igor

I think it's great, and it certainly belongs on Facebook. On the other

It's odd that the modern world is quick to condemn those who disparage
others because their religion or skin color is different but we think it's
perfectly okay to mock those whose moral code differs from our own and
categorize them as crazy. Another example of how political correctness has
failed us.

PESO 2016 - 094 - GDG

2016-05-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'm having a lot of fun learning and experimenting with the new I-1 instant
film camera. This one from a pack of Impossible 600 Cyanographic film … a
low-contrast film which has only a cyan layer.

  https://flic.kr/p/GtEhh4

The camera does well with it, but it is a tricky film to use nonetheless
because of the kind of rendering … subject matter becomes key. One other frame
from this pack may be interesting to post.

enjoy!

The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it.

Peso - Twa Corbies

2016-05-22 Thread ann sanfedele
Friday I gothired by my friend and neighbor to take the train upstate to
gather his 13 year old son and bring him back for Dad's weekend ... his Mom
insisted on the need for a chaperone as Dad couldnt get up there to
bring him back. So I took the Metro north Hudson line, which twice on
my past had been
a reverse commute for me. Took the train to Beacon early so I could
wander arounda bit a bit of a workout... the town's main drag is up
up up from the
shore where the station is... it was hot and tiring.. but I was rewarded
with a delicious lunch and ice cream for desert... minimal street
captures.. but
when I got back down near the stationI walked out on a dock while
waiting for Mom and kid to meet me there for the train back to
Manhattan. Found
these guys. I think the shotis open to a lot of captions - had a
couple of takers on Facebook when I postedand a couple of friends
stepped up..

I won't post here what they were yet , but some of you saw them..

Using this lens even at f1.2 and getting accurate focus is

Also, on-demand magnification and focus peaking help a lot.

Local shop owner converts

2016-05-22 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Sound more like the title of a theological post.
But a local camera store owner, avid sports and wildlife shooter, heavily
invested in Nikon, gave the K-1 a try and has come over.

Went into his store yesterday and he had this big smile on his face.

He is more than impressed, especially with the pixel shifting and the astral
features.

And he is really excited that there is now a world-class Pentax. It's been a
long time since the world-class LX.

(Too bad the MZ-S was so short-lived.)

He picked up an F50/1.4 from his shop and another lens, I don't recall
which.

Needless to say he is thrilled.

Feel free to add yours to the thread.

OK. I just had to get the book first...

Actually, at least one of them is in there, kind of. There's a nice
little exercise for everyone, right?

This is the shot of the three I submitted that was not selected by the curators:

As all the images I submitted contained much exposed skin, I imagine
that I gave the selection committee pause. :)

Very impressive.

I'd love to see a portrait wide open with that lens.

Any waifs or wenches knocking about?
