On Wednesday, I went to San Francisco for a visit to the re-imagined SF Museum

It's very hard to believe that I had not been to SF for a walk or to any museums there for almost two years. It's only 45 minutes away. Just a short few years back, I was in that neighborhood once or twice a week, visiting galleries and museums, shooting photos on the street ... Sigh. Work and my physical state these past five years made it too much of a challenge to try.

Work is no longer an issue, and my legs are finally getting back to the point where I can push them harder than the Saturday Morning Walk requires. Today is my birthday. So my birthday present to myself was to meet up with a photographer friend at SF MOMA on Wednesday, see the new building and some of the exhibits, have a nice lunch, do some photography, and visit the Leica Store nearby.

SF MOMA's new building is ... I can't find the right adjective. Hugely expanded, vast amounts of new works, glorious architecture; it's an amazing pleasure to be there. Linda only made it through the top floor, I made it through part of the sixth floor as well in the time we had. It will take several visits to take it all in. Outstanding: it alone was was worth the trek.

Buena Vista Park and the museum itself afforded the usual rich set of street subject matter. I carried the Leica M-D fitted with 'Lux 35mm v2 lens, and had the WATE in the bag. Didn't switch from the 35mm. I didn't shoot too many frames but am happy with the results I obtained.

We left the museum, stopped at a favorite spot a block or two away for lunch, and then walked up to the Leica Store. I've been meaning to visit Leica Store SF for ages, it was great to finally get there. An exhibition of Danny Lyons photos is on display. It struck me: what other camera shop can I walk into and spend an hour or more enjoying a beautifully curated, superbly presented photographic exhibit for an hour or more without intruding sales personnel getting in the way? Outstanding work ... and the sales person did stop over to say hello, welcome us to the store, and see if we needed any help. It was great.

The Leica Store visit consumed the remainder of the time in the day, and it was time to head home. All in all, an excellent day out. The museum visit was fantastic as was the visit to the Store. Being in the city with a friend to do, to see, to chat about photography, equipment, and art ... This is what gives life fullness and meaning. More, please.

Thank you all for being there with me, in spirit. :-)

Re: For MZ-S Owners

2016-08-26 Thread Mark C
I put a few rolls through the camera and have figured out what that
extra roller does - apparently it helps with loading the film.

So far I have experienced one roll would not load at all - it would
start to get engaged with the sprockets on the take up spool but would
pop loose. Tried several times but the camera would pull out about an
inch of film and then lose its grip on the leader. All of the other
rolls have the end of the film folded back, so there is about 1/4th of
an inch at the very end of the roll where the emulsion side is facing
out, not in like it should. Not sure that is a problem but I did have
one roll unexpectedly rewind halfway done. These were all canisters that
I hand rolled from bulk film, and I am not too meticulous about cutting
the notch at the end of the film. I have had the unexpected rewind a
could times in the past with bulk roll. Its rare but possibly not
related to the loading issue. I experimented with some commercial rolls
and found that if the film leader is placed in just the right location
it loads just fine - but if it is put in just a little to far it also
folds over.

So I either need to figure out how to get the roller back on or look for
a repair shop.

Re: OT: Barry Lyndon

I saw "Barry Lyndon" in first release on the big screen (super-wide-screen
somewhere in Manhattan, NYC) way back when it was new, and was surprised then
to hear all the negative reviews. I think I went to see it twice then. I've
seen it many times since in small theater showings and on video release… to me
it's always been a masterwork.

I'll have to see if the re-release is showing around here any time soon. Thanks
for the heads up, Bob!

LOL! I'm happy to say … nothing! :-)

I have everything I want (and/or need), although I have my eyes open for a nice
Leica Summicron or Summilux 50mm for the M. (I have two Voigtländer 50s, a
50/1.5 and a 50/2.5, so it's nothing I'm in any rush for.) I'll grab it when
the right one comes along.

That was pretty much the view of a lot of the critics at the time it came out,
but re-looking at it they're changing their minds.

Either way, Kubrick was a genius.

I've watched it bit-by-bit before on the small screen, but often find my mind
wandering when I'm watching anything on TV, but in the cinema I was transfixed

Subject: PESO 2016 - 172 - GDG

On Wednesday, I went to San Francisco for a visit to the re-imagined SF
Museum Of Modern Art.

 https://flic.kr/p/KBdL7d

It's very hard to believe that I had not been to SF for a walk or to any
museums there for almost two years. It's only 45 minutes away. Just a short
few years back, I was in that neighborhood once or twice a week, visiting
galleries and museums, shooting photos on the street ... Sigh. Work and my
physical state these past five years made it too much of a challenge to try.

Work is no longer an issue, and my legs are finally getting back to the
point where I can push them harder than the Saturday Morning Walk requires.
Today is my birthday. So my birthday present to myself was to meet up with a
photographer friend at SF MOMA on Wednesday, see the new building and some
of the exhibits, have a nice lunch, do some photography, and visit the Leica
Store nearby.

SF MOMA's new building is ... I can't find the right adjective. Hugely
expanded, vast amounts of new works, glorious architecture; it's an amazing
pleasure to be there. Linda only made it through the top floor, I made it
through part of the sixth floor as well in the time we had. It will take
several visits to take it all in. Outstanding: it alone was was worth the
trek.

Buena Vista Park and the museum itself afforded the usual rich set of street
subject matter. I carried the Leica M-D fitted with 'Lux 35mm v2 lens, and
had the WATE in the bag. Didn't switch from the 35mm. I didn't shoot too
many frames but am happy with the results I obtained.

We left the museum, stopped at a favorite spot a block or two away for
lunch, and then walked up to the Leica Store. I've been meaning to visit
Leica Store SF for ages, it was great to finally get there. An exhibition of
Danny Lyons photos is on display. It struck me: what other camera shop can I
walk into and spend an hour or more enjoying a beautifully curated, superbly
presented photographic exhibit for an hour or more without intruding sales
personnel getting in the way? Outstanding work ... and the sales person did
stop over to say hello, welcome us to the store, and see if we needed any
help. It was great.

The Leica Store visit consumed the remainder of the time in the day, and it
was time to head home. All in all, an excellent day out. The museum visit
was fantastic as was the visit to the Store. Being in the city with a friend
to do, to see, to chat about photography, equipment, and art ... This is
what gives life fullness and meaning. More, please.

Thank you all for being there with me, in spirit. :-)

Ouch - that would get your pacemaker recharged in a hurry!

You could dine out on a story like that for years. Bore your grandkids

The Aussies also made the list.

The Danes are happy because they live and let live. Copenhagen is a very
family oriented middle class place, but across the river they allow Freetown
Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood, to exist as a
hippie commune with open drugs all over.

Re: Decisive Moment

Back in my military aviation days, I was in a plane that was hit by
lightning. It disrupted our avionics, but not much else, although it was
definitely a shocking experience.

Peso-Gray Heron (one more)

2016-08-26 Thread Jack Davis

This image detail surprised me some.
Probably 75-80 yards and atop a rather tall tree.
Estimate a 60% crop.(?)
Went to check out the ready state of Gray Lodge State Wildlife Area.
Found that flooding has just barely begun.

DA55-300 on K-3.

Comments appreciated.

Famous for its use of a 50/0.7 and a 35/0.7 lens, shot in natural light,
composition based on 18th-century paintings, great acting, great story, great
