I use it mainly as my ebook reader (with the Kindle app) - it's about
the same size as a dedicated Kindle reader. It also serves as a sat nav
unit when travelling, a remote shutter release for my E-M10 and lots of
other users.

I paid $A99 so it should be even less in $US.

It also turned out that ultimately I didnt' need to use it ..

Just had to tell the printer I was using Epson enhanced matte and let
the printer do the work... as I was using Double sided matte from Red
river I chose

double sided matte in the paper menu.. that turned out to be wrong and
was the reason the r2400 prints were washed out. don't really ahve to

In my wife's case she was upgrading from a Kindle, and was able to transfer
over all the apps that she'd purchased, so an Android tablet was the right
choice for her. If I get a modern tablet I'd probably go for an Android,
too - I've got an old ASUS Transformer I got as part of a project that I was
working on, and we both have Android phones, so there's really not a lot of
sense in considering switching to a different platform.

I've also got an ASUS transformer. It's actually my second one, my
first one got crunched when something heavy got put on it. Oops.
Ir's an older Android based one, and was available pretty cheaply used,
on ebay or somesuch. It's nice in that it can be used as either a
tablet, or as a rudimentary laptop. For me, having a real keyboard is a
major plus. I bought my first one for showing photos, and it can work
pretty well for that, although I'm not super thrilled with the photo
display apps available.

While I'm generally quite pleased with OSX, IOS has always hated me.
It's one advantage is that there are many apps written for it, that are
not available on android. However, as mentioned the transformer has
slots for both micro SD and SD cards, which means that as long as you
don't need to show everything all at once, it's storage is effectively
unlimited, unlike apple products where you have to pay out the nose up
front for any storage you might ever possibly want.

My wife has one too. Loves it.

I have an older Galexy Note 10.1 which is also great and recently bought
a Lenovo Tab 2 A7-20 because I wanted something a bit smaller for
carting around in my camera bag. Cost less than 100 bucks and is simply
amazing! I'm yet to find any app that wont run on it.

I have an ASUS "ZenPad 8" and it's just brilliant. Ridiculously
high-res display, expandable storage (with micro SD card slot - I
added 128 gig) and an OTG-compatible micro USB jack, so I can plug in
a standard USB thumb drive via OTG cable and copy files back and

address - 192.168.0.1 - and some combination of the words "admin" and
"password" for the log-in. You can log in with any phone or tablet that
has wi-fi and a web browser and make any changes needed.

-p

Thanks for that information. I found "a manual" for the modem on-line.
It doesn't quite match some of the "features" of Time-Warner's special
version, but it's close enough for government work.

IP address, user name and password are different from the apparent
industry standard, but the manual helped me find the real IP address,
user name & password - it's there in real teeny-tiny print on one of the
labels.

Fortunately I keep an 8x Loupe here on my desk.

According to the manual the Ethernet is supposed to be ON by default.
I'll have to read the manual again and figure out how to turn the
Ethernet on if it's not.

I'll wait to test this until the power goes out again. For now, I just
want to use the internet.

It may be that I'll have to exchange the modem - AGAIN! I've come to
expect I will have to do that a couple of times a year anyway for as
long as I'm with Time-Warner (or whatever their new name is).

None of that decreases the aggravation I have to go through to get the
damn thing to do what I want it to do instead of what the big brains who
designed this shit ASSUME I'm supposed to want.

I'm printing them myself - actually prefer that people either buy the small
calendar for these (versus the flower calendar introduced earlier) as I

don't have a wide enough comb binding machine to go along anything wider
than 11 inches.

PLease note, you over seas guys especially, that you can download the whole
gallery and print them yourself. Alan C suggested I offer that as an option

as shipping the print version to such far reaching places as where he lives
would be porhibitively expensive... so Alan, ahem, ahem... how about taking
that

option? $3.00, $8.50, $12 depending on resolution - and you really don't
need the highest resolution. The photos alone are included in the gallery
pricing.

I've already sold a few - and I'd like orders early so Ican space out the
printing. All will be shipped by the end of November at the latest.

are very close, so, you should be able to follow.
Pay attention to the pictures on p. 10 and p.12. These are covering
what Paul (and others) were talking about.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Larry. I've done a couple of versions of this, one of which is almost
a bird portrait but I've got so many 'cute bird photos' I prefer this

I just ordered a, new to me anyway, used F 70-210mm from KEH.com.
Bargain condition, but I'm hoping it's old school KEH.com Bargain.

I decided to pull the trigger for a couple of reasons, the Sigma 70-210,
while not horrible, isn't great either. It would cost more than I paid
for repair and postage of my jammed 70-210, if the donor lens I have had
the needed parts, and wonder of wonders I had a KEH.com coupon code that
worked which covered the shipping plus a little.

I'm almost excited.

Just as a matter of taste, I would prefer the pines on the far shore to
be slightly less visible; a more subtle hint of their presence.

Re: Hurricane Matthew

2016-10-13 Thread John

On 10/13/2016 1:50 AM, Paul in MKE wrote:

My ISP never provides an manual either. If we get change providers
and/or get a different modem/router I Google the make and model and
usually am able to come up with an electronic version of the manual.
Every modem I've had from different providers has had the same IP
address - 192.168.0.1 - and some combination of the words "admin" and
"password" for the log-in.

Peso-Sac River Fall

2016-10-13 Thread Jack Davis

One of my first digital SLR shots. Taken in Jan '06 with my new K10D.
A foggy morning along the Sacramento river. Was completely socked in
when I arrived, but after a bit of chilly patience, the fog began to clear.
Wanted to leave the left shore pines just faintly visible.
Ten plus years ago, but I can still feel the quiet damp fog and sense my
shiver of excited anticipation.
Still had my manual M lenses and don't recall for certain, but think it was
probably shot with a well used one-touch Pentax 28-80.

Re: Some printer stuff to chew on...

2016-10-13 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi Ann:

This document describes with pictures of the menus of how to print photos
on Epson printers (like R2400) using paper profiles:

http://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd3/cpd39134.pdf
While in PSE the menus might look slightly different then in PS, they are
very close, so, you should be able to follow.
Pay attention to the pictures on p. 10 and p.12. These are covering what
Paul (and others) were talking about.

I hope this helps.

Igor

I don't know and don't know how to tell... that was what I hoped someone
would tell me. :-) Hey weren't you the one that you said you removed
profiles and let the printer rule?

As Paul Stenquist said, are you setting the software to control the
color output or depending on the printer's driver? I looked on the
Red River site and it appears they don't have an ICC profile for the
R220, but they do for the R2400. Would be a good idea to install he
one for the R2400 and use that when printing from that printer.
Just be sure that if you use Elements to control the output you set
the printer driver to not control the output results.

Also, I believe the R220 uses dye based inks while the R2400 inks
are pigment based. That could be a reason for the prints looking a
slightly different.

I did a little test - took one file and printed it out three times

they all look identical to me... but the R2400 prints are simply
overall lighter than the R220. Now the R220 only has one black
cartridge and the r2400 has 3, as most of you probably know. But
you switch out the main Black one when you use matte paper.

I used 50lb Red river stock for this, double sided matte with the
matte cartridge in , of course. On the R220 the setting was matte
paper heavy weight best photo and photo enhanced. On the R2400
there was a setting choice for double sided matte so I used that.

I haven't got any Red River specific profiles - and from what I'm
seeing I don't think it matters...

Looks like either or both printers are simply overriding whatever
is stored in the file or it really doesn't matter what profiel one
uses and it is all BS, or

both printers are using a profile that is the samebecause I'm in
Photoshop Elements 10 when i print and there is something in THAT
which is controlling it.

I like some of thecalendar pages as they are on the r220 better
than the r2400 and vice versabut it would be nice not to have to
fiddle with the files every time I print one calendar page.

any ideas?

off to my daily nap now

Thanks for that, Mike. A chap called Stu Davidson has 2, one with a std.
engine & the other upgraded. The RAF, RRAF & SAAF had training bases in SA &
Rhodesia during WWII. Harvards were the standard trainer. Many passed into
private hands and are still regular fliers. We have our first ever Airshow

The Stearman was widely used by the US military as a primary trainer
during WWII and many were auctioned off for a pittance after the war.
An old-time pilot I knew some 40+ years ago told me he bought one, new,
still in the crate for $450. Because they were relatively cheap and
very sturdy many were converted to crop dusters. While there were
several engine variants on the original military models, most of them
were in the range of 220+ horsepower. Many of the models converted to
dusters had the engines upgraded to the Pratt & Whitney R-985, which was
nearly double the original horsepower. There are about 1000 still
registered in the US, but probably not nearly that number still in
flying condition.

Probably the most memorable movie scene with a Stearman is the one
chasing Cary Grant in "North By Northwest".
