Re: Help! More Bird Confusion

2017-04-25 Thread Paul Stenquist
I found my copy of “Birds of Michigan” and checked to the Pine Siskin photo.
Maybe. But my bird ha a longer beak and bigger eyes with goggles like a Thrush.
The wing markings are correct, but my bird has much longer legs. Still not sure
about this one.

I’m leaning more toward the female Redwing Blackbird as suggested by Mathew
Hunt. The long legs, head markings and feather color are in synch with that
bird.

I'm finally getting a workflow together for making focus stacks with the
K1 in pixel shift mode: Make the exposures as raw files, process them
in Silkypix with only basic adjustments to exposure and white balance
(about all that you can do in Silkypix), stack the images in Zerene

I have gone through two 16-45s and the floppy lens barrel kills them
every time and causes misalignment. I think it has awful build
quality, but that's me. The 17-70 in either pentax or sigma flavor
would be worth looking at if you have to go the precision route. You
could replace a 16-45 I think for what they would want to fix it. I
have the DA 17-70 and I think it is very comparable IQ wise to the
16-45. I really don't see much difference between the two. The 16-45
might be ever slightly sharper in the middle but that's about it. At
f8 they both look pretty identical.

These things are quite straightforward really. The simple rule is,
however it's spelt, that's not how you say it. If you say it the way
it's spelt everyone will know you're a tourist, and charge you £300
for an ice-cream.

Cirencester= Siren sessta
Gloucester = Glossta
Bicester = Bissta

Leominster = Lemsta
Southwark = Suthuk

Greenwich = Grinnidge

The only exception to the rule, and only in the context of this one
place, is Leicester Square, which is invariably pronounced Lie Sessta
Squaw, with the emphasis on Sessta. Nobody can really explain this,
but it may be that on this one occasion the locals just gave up trying
to teach the correct pronunciation to foreigners, and instead put
ice-cream prices up to £350, plus 10% if want a flake and crushed nuts.

Re: August Solar Eclipse

2017-04-25 Thread John Sessoms

The lens is a Sigma AF 300mm f/2.8. I have a matching Sigma 1.4x
tele-converter for it.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-300mm-f2-8-apo-ex-dg.html

The Astrozap filters come in various diameters. They're actually for
small telescopes.

My local Pentax dealer also sells telescopes, so he's got them in stock,
except that he only had the one size larger and the one size smaller
filters on hand right now.

Update on my preparations (if anyone is interested).

I got a Manfrotto 700RC2 fluid head that will take my existing mounting

He ordered an Astrozap AZ-1514 Glass full aperture Solar Filter to fit
over the lens hood of my 300mm f/2.8 (124-130mm).

https://www.astrozap.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=61

I hope to be able to start practicing safely shooting the sun by next
week to see how much of the frame I'll fill & whether or not I'm going
to need to use the 1.4x tele-converter. I want to have enough of the
frame filled to get some detail on the sun, but loose enough to get the
corona & solar prominences un-cropped.

I'd like to have that lens on the K-1 because of the articulated screen,
but I'll switch it to the K-3 if I find out I need the 1.5 crop factor.

The meters here print out a ticket that you can put on your dash,
inside, so not subject to the wind/rain/theft/etc. Must the ticket be
put on the window there?

If you had bought a ticket, and you have that ticket to prove it, even
though it was not 'properly displayed', I would still contest it, if it
were me. These parking businesses are outrageous and cannot be allowed
to get away with a license to print money.

If it had gone to court, I don't see how the parking company could have
won - you had a ticket and as far as you were concerned, an act of God
prevented it from being displayed properly !

Re: Traveller, if you come to Ashford, Kent...

2017-04-25 Thread mike wilson
And now the bad news. You can safely ignore it. It's an invoice, not a fine,
and the legally agreed limit is recompense for any time you used filling the
space which could have been sold to another user. As you actually had a ticket
for the time used, it's doubly irrelevant.

The only ones you actually have to pay are the local authority fines, which are
enforcements notices of local laws. You can end up in prison for ignoring
those.

Thanks, Bob and Chris.

I found this particular part of the cemetery quite peaceful and conducive
to contemplation, and I loved the cylindrical trees. The trees pictured in
my image are actually quite unruly, compared to the others. They were
actually trimming them while we were there, but hadn't gotten around to
these yet.

then stay away from the local ASDA Superstore and its car park, located
on a hill where it's always rather windy. The parking tickets from the
vending machine are particularly flimsy and have a 86 percent chance of
flipping over when you close the car's door.

40 quid!!!

The note you'll find on your windscreen is almost two feet long and the
endless fine print makes it quite clear that behind all this is a bunch
of accomplished shysters. The process to enter an objection with photos
and other suporting evidence is about as simple as applying for UK
citizenship as a EU foreigner. We've grudgingly paid to avoid the
increased amount of 70 quid plus additional fees and levies. We had
always been wondering why they have someone permanently patrolling this
rather small car park. Now we know the business model behind this. What
a scam!

The next car park, near our favourite fish and chips place in Tenterden,
has tickets with a slightly sticky rear side, like post-it notes. But
why should the folks at Ashford ruin a perfectly working scheme to rip
off unsuspecting visitors? What a clever and innovative use of wind energy.

The staff at the superstore have of course nothing to do with all this.
The car park is outsourced to another company. They were really sorry
and that was it.

They'll have one customer less in the future.

I think this is some kind of warbler. Can’t find an exact match on the web,
but some Warblers are close. Shot these handheld, sitting on my bench with
the K-1 and 150-450. Never saw one that I can recall. Could be migratory.
Didn’t hang around long. Any opinions?
