Re: PESO - Dogwood Flower
Thanks, Gonz. I share your disdain for Silkypix - the user interface is weak and it lacks a lot of functionality found in Adobe Camera Raw. I don't use lightroom - locked in with Photoshop CS6 for the time being. Adobe stopped updating ACR for CS6 with the K3II as the last Pentax supported camera. I'm not sure what that means - ACR still opens K1 DNG files, but does not seem to process the pixelshift images as well as Silkypix or in camera JPG's. But the version of ACR I have was updated to support pixel shift mode. I don't know if that means it supports only K3II pixel shift mode or if it also supports K1 pixel shift mode. Last I looked (4 to 6 weeks ago) ACR did not support motion corrected pixel shift mode. I did some testing with to tools I have SIlkpix, in camera JPG's, the outdaed version of ACR. My workflow is to shoot in motion corrected pixelshift mode and use Zerene stacker combine TIFFs . (Zerene stacker does not work with raw file, afaik). I see more difference in focus stacked / pixel shift images than in single pixel shift images. In my tests, the hierarchy is: 1. DNG's converted in Silkypix - the amount of detail in stacked images is really impressive. 2. In camera JPG's converted to TIFF's via ACR - almost as good as DNG's in Silkypix but some artifacts appear in the stacked images - maybe JPG artifacts amplified by stacking? 3. DNG's converted in ACR - notably less detail than the above two options, but... 4. Non pixel shift images converted in ACR - less detail than the above, including pixel shift DNG's converted with ACR. So - it seems that even the outdated version of ACR I have shows some improvement with pixel shift mode, but not on par with SIlkypix or in camea JPG's. FWIW, I use pixel shift in motion corrected mode because at high magnification I see vibrations in images every now and then. A garbage truck hitting a pothole half a block away can create visible motion in the subject even at just 1:1. That's where I am at with testing Pixel shift images. I doubt that I will ever move to Lightroom since blending of layers is an integral aspect of how I post process and LIghtroom does not support layers. Aside from the updated ACR I have not seen any update in Photoshop CC that is very compelling. Mark On 4/26/2017 12:01 PM, Gonz wrote: Excellent series Mark. Re: Up periscope! (for a question)
The extension cord circuits were scary, but when I researched things on the internet I found that its actually a very common occurrence. I have no idea what people were thinking when they did that. The second most scary thing was a suspended ceiling that was added to the basement in the 1960's. The lights ran off newer but ungrounded lighting. One of the ceiling lights was shorted to the metal grid that holds the ceiling tiles in place. The whole grid was hot - 115 volts. I can't count how many times I've fiddled with that ceiling and had my hands on the grid it over the years. Apparently if I had been standing on a wet floor and touched the grid, or grabbed the grid while holding onto a metal pipe, that could have been it. That freaked me out but the electricians were pretty nonchalant about it, saying that it is actually not that easy to get grounded well enough to be electrocuted, though on them got a pretty good poke when he discovered the problem. I'm glad to have all that behind me. Insurance companies are starting to decline to cover houses with K so when we the time comes to sell there will be one less hassle. Re: OT - Universal battery chargers
Brian, I have the exact universal charger you linked to, and I find it a decent unit although setting up the contact pins to meet the battery's terminals can be fiddly and the grip of the connection can be a bit tenuous. The Inca charger has just two pins, +ve and -ve, while the OEM units may or may not (brand dependent) use the extra pins to read out the condition of the battery. Polarity doesn't matter so you can connect the battery whichever way way fits best, but you need to be able to identify which of the (usually) four terminals are the battery poles. The charger has a car adapter that seems handy, but I suspect that its tenuous grip on the battery could cause the battery to disconnect with the bumps and jostles of driving. Although it can charge all your camera batteries it can only handle one at a time, so you may find yourself with a queue if it's your one and only charger. On the plus side, you get to see the approximate charge level, in 25% increments, unlike the OEM chargers that just tell you a battery is charging or is full. And it can also charge two AA or AAA cells, although not at the same time as a camera battery, and it has a 0.5A USB outlet. So... some pros and some cons. regards, Anthony On 26 April 2017 at 16:14, Brian Walterswrote: > G'day all > > Does anyone have any experience with universal battery chargers such as > this: > > https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/camera-accessories/ > inca/inca-universal-charger/601162/ > > Somehow I've managed to accumulate 4 cameras all of which use different > batteries. Re: Up periscope! (for a question)
When I was a teenager I used to help my electrician Dad to moonlight, wiring houses over weekends, using knob (we called them cleats) & rubber/fabric insulated wiring. Later, it changed to steel conduit with the same wiring & later still, plastic conduit with PVC insulated wiring. Today, much of it is Surfex wiring without conduit at all. (Surfex is 3/4 core PVC insulated wiring in a strong Al sheath with another plastic outer covering). Simple, safe & easy to use. There must be thousands of houses in SA still wired the old way. Re: Up periscope! (for a question)
Two-three years ago we bought the next-door small house as a rental property (and to have a bit of control over who our neighbors would be.) The son-in-law of the previous owner had “upgraded” many of the older two-prong electrical outlets with modern three-prong “grounded" outlets. Unfortunately, the wiring in the walls was all 2-conductor, no ground. That became an element in our price negotiation strategy! After the purchase we had the entire house rewired to modern standards. Relatively easy to do with a one-level house and access from an attic above and an unfinished basement below. Our house in Kansas City was two adjacent log cabins built in 1837-38, remodeled in the 1880s, again in the early 1930s, again in the late 1970s not too long before we bought it. Every time someone upgraded the electrical wiring they left behind dangling bits of the predecessor wiring. We eventually did some re-wiring in parts of that house to provide grounded circuits to the areas where stereo and computer gear might be used. The ungrounded two-wire feeds were mostly 1930s with braided cloth “insulation”. Scary stuff. stan > On Apr 26, 2017, at 10:33 AM, Gonzwrote: > > We had that type of wiring all over a house we lived in in Pittsburgh. > It was built in the mid 1800's and a lot of things were added after > the fact, like the wiring, plumbing, heating, etc. > > But the worst story was of a house with more "modern" wiring. Re: Up periscope! (for a question)
In pittsburgh right now! Yeah knob and tube wiring is very common here still. It is mostly safe as long as rodents stay away from it. Blown insulation is bad because if the wire overheats the heat has nowhere to go. And those wires were designed to cool by the surrounding air. So yeah, that's a fire hazard. Other than that they aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. Now the story about the extension cords used as patches. THAT'S SCARY! Like holy crap man! I shoot handheld, constantly on the move (on the floor; up a ladder; shooting from beside or behind my subjects), and with strobes there is no way in hell that you can see what your exposure is going to be, EVF or not. How does an EVF improve on the focusing and framing of the 645's 100% OVF? I have never been able to manually focus better than since I started using the Z. Even through a soft focus filter like I did last weekend. Re: Up periscope! (for a question)
We had that type of wiring all over a house we lived in in Pittsburgh. It was built in the mid 1800's and a lot of things were added after the fact, like the wiring, plumbing, heating, etc. But the worst story was of a house with more "modern" wiring. My dad's house was built in the 50's and recently he turned on the microwave and it started to blink and finally shut down. He went to go reset the breakers and there was smoke all over the adjacent room. None of the breakers were tripped, but the light in the living room would take forever to turn on. When we came to visit, I figured I would just go replace all the breakers with new ones, but behold, it was a Federal Pacific Electric panel and everyone on the web said "run away|". They went broke due to faulty breakers that would stick "on" and cause fires. We bought a new Square D panel and replaced everything. Then we discovered that one of the wires in the attic from the stuck breaker had basically melted down and caused a tiny fire which was the cause of the smoke. My Dad escaped a bullet. It's amazing how much old Knob and tube is till in use. We still had about half our outlets and fixtures on it before rewiring this winter. The main runs of Knob and Tube were actually in pretty good shape, but the runs in the attic were buried under blown in insulation which makes them more of a fire hazard. The really scary stuff were the outlets and fixtures added in the 40's and 50's. We found several where someone just spliced household grade extension cord wiring to the Knob and Tube and ran it through the walls without using conduit. PDML Photo Annual: Almost there!
Just finishing up the last bits of this year's book. I think it should be uploaded and available tomorrow (Thursday, 27 April). This will be too late for me to order any copies to bring to the UK (I'll be there May 6-13) but I could get some to bring to the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend (June 2-4) and of course for anyone in/near/visiting the Boston area any time. Buying two or books at once saves tremendously on shipping, so keep that in mind if you can team up with anyone. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: OT - Universal battery chargers
I will be interested to hear what you find out! For me, one of the biggest hassles with multiple chargers comes from the power cords. Long ago I bought a Pearstone 3rd party charger for my Pentax-compatible DLi-90 batteries, this has the advantage of a fold-out plug rather than a power cord. It also may have an advantage for you in that the a removable “sled” which holds the battery can be replaced by another such sled with proper contacts for a different battery. E.g., here is a random charger plate that would allow me to easily repurpose the charger for a different battery… https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/709305-REG/Pearstone_PL_SYDBL20_Charger_Plate_for_Pearstone.html My alternative solution for getting rid of the power cords is something like the following which replaces the cord with a simple right angle wall plug: http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-2-Prong-Right-Angle-AC-power-Plug-Adapter-IEC-C7-receptacle-to-NEMA-1-15P-/272471340610?hash=item3f708eb642:g:3Q4AAOSwnHZYQRXc Neither of these solutions rids you of the chargers, but would reduce the packaging cubage… stan > On Apr 26, 2017, at 2:14 AM, Brian Walterswrote: > > G'day all > > Does anyone have any experience with universal battery chargers such as > this: > > https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/camera-accessories/inca/inca-universal-charger/601162/ > > Somehow I've managed to accumulate 4 cameras all of which use different > batteries.
