Re: OT: Help with Video Problems for Non-Profit

2017-10-25 Thread Marnie (aka Doe)
Nevermind. I had suggested to her that re-importing might fix the
orientation problem.

So she did it on her Mac at home and the orientation is now correct.

I think she felt guilty because the phone stopped recording at the event
for a few minutes before she noticed it and restarted it. So I think she
felt she might have caused the problem.

So it seems there are two files. I am capable of stitching them together
if she can't figure it out.

I am a PC person, but I had suggested to her that a MAC imort might work
better, just based on things I've read on this list. :-)

Thanks, Later, Marnie aka Doe

Re: OT: Help with Video Problems for Non-Profit

There are a bunch of Adobe Premier Elements tutorials on YouTube.

On 10/25/2017 11:13, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote:

If it’s a video editor, it has to be able to produce MPEG4 files. MPEG3 files
are sound only.

I don’t know anything about this particular software package. However, the
technique to correct the orientation is simple:

- Split the video into two clips at the point where the orientation switches.
- Apply a rotation transformation to the rotated clip so that it’s in the
correct orientation.
- Join the two clips back together and render a new corrected video export.

Ninety degree orientation transforms (and multiples of ninety degrees) are
generally lossless since they’re just a matter of tweaking the parameters in
the track to a different display value for the image raster. Doing a transform
to any other value requires recalculation of the frames.

Look up the help information for the software you’re using to see how to make
this happen. :-)

co-sponsored by various other local groups.

A woman from the local Peace Center used her cell to video tape the talk. One
of our group's members' husband helped her import the video to computer. I do
not KNOW how he did it, what software he used.

It seems half way through the video the orientation changes from landscape to
portrait. I saw her tape it, the cell was on a stand. I do not know if she
accidentally changed the orientation while taping. It's possible, you know how
sensitive cell phone are to that. It is possible during importing the
orientation was changed.

I am not the only one clueless here.

She says her computer is a HP laptop and the phone is Sansung S4 and the file
is a MP4.

Questions:

1. Is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 through on the existing MP4?
Maybe using Elements Video Premier 11? Or something else?
2. Would it be better to re-import it?
3. If so, is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 way through, if the
orientation was wrong on the phone to begin with?

Assume no more money will be spent on this. It needs to be the software we have
or free software.

I think the fact the orientation changes 1/2 through is the major problem.

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

I showed this video to my students on Monday night and everyone
enjoyed it. And some important points about copyright were clarified.

But after having a couple of days to think about it I'm suspicious. He
claims his lawyer told him not to make this video but he obviously did
any way and it's still on line after a couple of weeks - even though
he explicitly calls the person who sued him "malicious" (though
without naming the party whose copyright he infringed). He doesn't
seem like the kind of guy who would be able to shrug off a $35k
lawsuit loss as just an annoying business expense.

I'm starting to suspect this is just a publicity grab and this guy was
never sued at all.

If he ripped off the wrong photographer's registered images royalties could be pretty high.
Perhaps he's still at the stage where he's been served with a DMCA Takedown and a demand for
$35K in royalties & "his lawyer" told him to STFU while they tried to negotiate
a lower settlement.

The little bit I could stand to listen to he sounded stupid enough to think a
stunt like this could intimidate the copyright owner into backing off.

RE: More thoughts on slide scanning: Hamrick VueScan

2017-10-25 Thread John Coyle
I've had Vuescan since 1996, and gave up using it when the interface became
less intuitive to use,
and my old film scanner was no longer supported (SCSI connection, which it
seems no-one uses
nowadays and there are no PCI cards available for Windows 7+). The Epson
software I found
reasonable to use, but if the Vuescan interface is now better I'll go back to
it!

To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List
Subject: More thoughts on slide scanning: Hamrick VueScan

So... I've been scanning in some old slides lately. My current 35mm film
scanner is an old Minolta
Scan Dual IV. Which unfortunately isn't supported by Konica/Minolta on any
modern operating system.

The traditional solution to this is to use Hamrick's "VueScan"
software, because it has built-in support for most scanners: No need for a
driver from the
manufacturer. I tried VueScan years ago but struggled with the interface and
gave up on it. So I'm
pleased to report that the latest version has a vastly improved UI from what I
remember. Image
quality is excellent: The multi scan capability is easy to use and really lets
you get the best dMax
from a scanner. I'm very impressed.

Now here's something interesting: VueScan comes in two versions, Basic and Pro.
"Basic" supports
only flatbed scanners, not film scanners, and has some other limitations but
it's only $39.00. The
"Pro" version costs $99.00 but supports film scanners. Unfortunately, I
accidentally purchased the
Basic version - though strangely they only charged me
$29.00 rather than $39.00 listed on the web site. I was still annoyed with
myself... until I noticed
that one can upgrade for just $50.00.
So that's what I did, just moments later. I ended up getting the full pro
version, legally, for
$79.99 instead of $99.00! Seems like an odd loophole but I'm not complaining!

And another bonus: Way back in the jusk closet in my office I had an old
Visioneer flatbed scanner
which I abandoned when the manufacturer decided not to update their drivers to
support Windows 7. (
I think I tried to give away this scanner on the PDML and had no takers.) So I
bought an Epson
flatbed and forgot about it. But guess what? VueScan supports it. So I took it
in to school and now
I have my own flatbed scanner there.

So basically, I also got a free scanner out of the deal.

Mp3 is an audio export format - it cannot contain video.

Mp4 is a video compression container (for video and audio export). Variations
are also also used by many camera manufacturers as a way of compressing video
ready to be 'uncompressed' into it's full glory for editing. You shouldn't be
editing Mp4 files - they need to be unwrapped into a format suitable for the
editing software first.

'Do' Mp4?? Mp4 is basically an export codec, for exporting compressed video
files to (say) the web. You shouldn't be editing Mp4 files.

>A woman from the local Peace Center used her cell to video tape the

Cel phones have an orientation sensor that detects which way the phone is
positioned, unless it is 'locked' to prohibit it from changing during use.

Prayer would be useful past this point.

>She says her computer is a HP laptop and the phone is Sansung S4 and the

Remember I said Mp4 files were for exporting video? They can also be used by
cameras (even in a phone) to compress the footage. Full HD video takes up a LOT
of space in the raw...

>Questions:
>
>1. Is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 through on the existing
>MP4? Maybe using Elements Video Premier 11? Or something else?

The problem is when you say 'change the orientation'. Do you mean that the
first half of the video is 'normal' widescreen landscape format, and then by
the Hand of God it changes so that the image is rotated through 90 degrees? Eg
if you view the footage, to make it appear 'upright' you have to turn the
computer monitor onto its side? Or is it that at the point where it changes,
the normal widescreen landscape footage changes to a vertical presentation with
large areas of black nothingness either side?

(Either is very bad and you are basically screwed)

>2. Would it be better to re-import it?

It would be better (and kinder) to disembowel the person who shot the video.

>3. If so, is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 way through, if
>the orientation was wrong on the phone to begin with?

It all depends. I'm not clear on the 2nd half footage. You say the orientation
changes, but is it changed so that the video is effectively 'vertical', like
looking through books on a bookshelf to the rest of the library beyond? Or is
the image simply chenged through 90 degrees with the image still in widescreen
video?? If the latter, easy to fix. If the former, not a chance. Disembowelment
the only option.

>Assume no more money will be spent on this. It needs to be the software

When I said an easy fix..

>I think the fact the orientation changes 1/2 through is the major problem.

Correctly identified!

>Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

If you want to WeTransfer me the footage I can have a look for you, God help me.

By return I can either A) WeTransfer you back the footage corrected, or B)
suggest a good course on disemboweling vertical video shooters.

I can get good results with Vuescan, but it’s a pain. The sliders and other
controls are crude and not proportional, so the result of small tweaks is hard
to predict. Previews are inaccurate as well, at least in my experience. I
haven’t upgraded it in years, so it may be better now, but the Epson software
works beautifully on the V850 Pro, so I’m not likely to try it again.

More thoughts on slide scanning: Hamrick VueScan

2017-10-25 Thread Mark Roberts
So... I've been scanning in some old slides lately. My current 35mm
film scanner is an old Minolta Scan Dual IV. Which unfortunately isn't
supported by Konica/Minolta on any modern operating system.

The traditional solution to this is to use Hamrick's "VueScan"
software, because it has built-in support for most scanners: No need
for a driver from the manufacturer. I tried VueScan years ago but
struggled with the interface and gave up on it. So I'm pleased to
report that the latest version has a vastly improved UI from what I
remember. Image quality is excellent: The multi scan capability is
easy to use and really lets you get the best dMax from a scanner. I'm
very impressed.

Now here's something interesting: VueScan comes in two versions, Basic
and Pro. "Basic" supports only flatbed scanners, not film scanners,
and has some other limitations but it's only $39.00. The "Pro" version
costs $99.00 but supports film scanners. Unfortunately, I accidentally
purchased the Basic version — though strangely they only charged me
$29.00 rather than $39.00 listed on the web site. I was still annoyed
with myself... until I noticed that one can upgrade for just $50.00.
So that's what I did, just moments later. I ended up getting the full
pro version, legally, for $79.99 instead of $99.00! Seems like an odd
loophole but I'm not complaining!

And another bonus: Way back in the jusk closet in my office I had an
old Visioneer flatbed scanner which I abandoned when the manufacturer
decided not to update their drivers to support Windows 7. ( I think I
tried to give away this scanner on the PDML and had no takers.) So I
bought an Epson flatbed and forgot about it. But guess what? VueScan
supports it. So I took it in to school and now I have my own flatbed
scanner there.

So basically, I also got a free scanner out of the deal.

I have a well worn 6x7 that I still dust off now and then. The 67 was
very similar to the 6x7and incorporated several updates made to the 6x7

camera, though it used the same lens mount. The manuals for the 6x7 and
descendants are available at pentax67.net - there are instructions on
how to cock the shutter without film. It does need a battery to fire, IIRC.

Have fun!

HAR!
That's great, Ann! It gave me a good lough!

(And I was commenting on PDMLers not using the PUG theme "creatively".)

Re: Shocked that he was sued for stealing photography

2017-10-25 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I suspect it is not just "publicity", but direct money earning.
If you were to look at his videos, - he is clearly in the business of
earning "click" money from his Youtube videos.
So, I suspect Mark's hypothesis as well as Ann and Rob's
clarifications are correct.

It's all consistent with his M.O.:
I listened to a portion of some other video where he apologizes for using
a dirty language in some prior videos, with lots of blubbering about
nothing.

But after having a couple of days to think about it I'm
suspicious. He
claims his lawyer told him not to make this video but he obviously
did
any way and it's still on line after a couple of weeks - even
though

he explicitly calls the person who sued him "malicious" (though
without naming the party whose copyright he infringed). He doesn't
seem like the kind of guy who would be able to shrug off a $35k
lawsuit loss as just an annoying business expense.

I'm starting to suspect this is just a publicity grab and this guy
was

never sued at all.

I guess I should add I used Video Premier Elements 11 to edit a MP3
about 5 years ago. Another speaker. But it was just adding a title
screen, and "the end," and cutting off the Q at the end.

On the other hand, I am not sure I didn't use Movie Maker or something
else. I need to refresh my memory on that. I know I used Windows Movie
Maker to make my own video of stills, for a family history video.

It's not like I've done no video editing at all. But very, very basic.

Re: OT: Help with Video Problems for Non-Profit

2017-10-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

OT: Help with Video Problems for Non-Profit

2017-10-25 Thread Marnie (aka Doe)

Okay, I am basically video clueless.

I have Video Premier Elements 11 on my computer. I am not sure it will
do mp4, I know it will do mp3. I have a Lenovo PC.

Last Tuesday we had a speaker for my church's environmental group. This
was co-sponsored by various other local groups.

A woman from the local Peace Center used her cell to video tape the
talk. One of our group's members' husband helped her import the video to
computer. I do not KNOW how he did it, what software he used.

It seems half way through the video the orientation changes from
landscape to portrait. I saw her tape it, the cell was on a stand. I do
not know if she accidentally changed the orientation while taping. It's
possible, you know how sensitive cell phone are to that. It is possible
during importing the orientation was changed.

I am not the only one clueless here.

She says her computer is a HP laptop and the phone is Sansung S4 and the
file is a MP4.

Questions:

1. Is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 through on the existing
MP4? Maybe using Elements Video Premier 11? Or something else?

2. Would it be better to re-import it?
3. If so, is there a way to change the orientation 1/2 way through, if
the orientation was wrong on the phone to begin with?

Assume no more money will be spent on this. It needs to be the software
we have or free software.

I think the fact the orientation changes 1/2 through is the major problem.

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
