Re: GESO: Peru - Machu Picchu

2018-07-15 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Subash. I hate changing lenses! Even more in the digital age and the
dangers of dust on the sensor. For a trip like this I go with two K-1 bodies,
three basic lenses. And maybe something special like a 50/1.2 or a Macro,
depending. In this case I had the big-three zooms: 15-30/2.8, 24-70/2.8, and
70-200/2.8. In a very few cases in the Galapagos or in the Amazon region a
longer lens would have been nice, but most of the time the wildlife was too
close for something like a 300mm. The first half day at Machu Picchu, I used
24-70 and 70-200. Very few shots at the 200 end. The next morning I used 15-30
and 24-70.

Re: Astro landscape attempts

2018-07-15 Thread Steve Sharpe
Beautiful photos, Larry! Having a scenic foreground really helps. Out here I
have light pollution and wind turbines for a foreground. Not pretty.

Skyglow can be a problem and DSLRs are very adept at picking up any green in
the sky. 50% of their pixels are green sensitive (RGGB), to mimic the colour
sensitivity of the human eye in daylight. For night photography, though, that
can become a massive pain to deal with.

I don't quite have it wired yet, but I'm learning things to try for next
time. These were done with the rokinon 24/1.4 from the town of Mount
Shasta.  A couple of these might print up well.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157697414506681

24mm isn't wide enough to get the full arc of the Milkyway, even
positioned vertically.

These were done with the DFA 15-30 using astrotracer from outside of
Weed, just off of I-5.  I was hoping the smoke from the fires would be
beneficial for foreground effects, it may have caused more problems,
possibly even the rainbow effect, I'm not sure.

This set doesn't show the ones I tried with the 24/1.4 or the non
astrotracer with the 15-30.  I don't think I really got any keepers out
of this set, but I learned a bit.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157698646538354

I should go back at about a half moon so that I can get shots both
with no moonlight and also with Shasta lit after the moon rises.

I need to do more overlap on the frames, particularly with the 15-30
The astrotracer really helps with the sky, and with the dark foreground
doesn't make a lot of difference there.

I should definitely bracket the photos.
I wish there were stacking software that could separate the sky from the
foreground and stack them each appropriately. Also software that could
stitch an astrotracer sky with a non astrotracer foreground, while
stacking them for HDR and panorama.
I also wish the software would use the gps, accelerometer and compass
data to make the stitching go faster.

which camera do you use and what are your typical ISO, exposure time,

why not use a wider lens or is lens speed critical?

A large gallery (90 images) of shots from my trip in early April this year. We
went first to a jungle lodge in the Peruvian Amazon, then to Cuzco and on to
Machu Picchu. As with my Ecuador gallery, some of the shots are there because I
am quite pleased with them, others are there because I think they help to
provide a visual travelogue of sorts…

Investigators later determined that pilot error was the cause, after one pilot

2018-07-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I love air shows!

I participated in a couple during my active duty days. One resulted in a
few moments of terror when one of our planes didn't make it for the fly-by,
but was involve in a mid-air that resulted in the loss of a radome and a
navigation ejecting (safely except for some broken toes) over the pine
forests of NC. The best one was wen my son was a teen-ager and we attended
the one at Miramar, CA back when it was the "Top Gun" Navy Base. (It is
now the USMC's main airbase on the West Coast). I had lots of high
performance a/c, plus two Migs; first ones I ever saw other than I on
radar screen.

We have a nice annual airshow 2 hours west of here in Reading, PA, that
specializes in WW II aircraft. An organization to which I belong mans a
table there to promote our group and educate folks on aviation heroes.

I used to like to post myself at the end of runways and watch the planes
overhead heading for a touchdown. These days one can get arrested doing
that. 
