Hi Paul!
Big congrats from Chicago! Wishing you both the very best!
May all your ups and downs be in between the sheets! :-)
P.S. I learned that toast at an Irish wedding. An Irish priest gave it! I
kid you not!
Big cheers, Christine and Darrel

Little black furry dog. Perfect!

We had a dog for 15 years. Meg went to the pet store for catnip, came back to
tell me that I must go and see this little puppy. I saw the puppy, picked him
up. Done deal.
Enjoy your Prince!

Re: August PUG is up!

2019-08-07 Thread John

Well, I now have a little dog.

His name is Prince and he's three years old. He just kind of fell into my lap
this afternoon.

I went to the animal shelter to see what they might have and there was a sign
out front saying they were *FULL* & if you were there to surrender a pet, please
reconsider or at least wait a few days before trying again.

They didn't really have anything but full grown pit bulls. I've nothing against
pit bulls, a friend of mine has one and she's the sweetest girl you've ever met
but too many of them have been mistreated to deliberately make them aggressive
and that's more than I can handle. I decided to check back with them another day.

On the way out, I met a guy coming in to surrender a little black furry dog. He
said his daughter was going away to college, so she couldn't keep him and there
was no else at home who would take care of him. He didn't know what he was going
to do if the shelter couldn't take him. We exchanged names & phone numbers and
Prince came home with me.

He can call me if his daughter is inconsolable, and I may call him to find out
what time Prince expects to be fed in the morning. I've already been to the
store to buy food, a little harness for walkies and a bunch of the little bags
I'm going to need.

I had to go to a club meeting for a couple of hours this evening and he was kind
of excited when I got home ... didn't know who that strange man was, coming
through his new front door.

I gave him time to calm down before I approached him & then we went for a walk.
I think it will be good. Gives me a reason to do the exercise I've been
neglecting, and I won't be overdoing it keeping it gentle for him.

I'll give him a little time to settle in before I start "tormenting" him with
the camera, but photos will follow.

groomed every three to four months to keep his fur relatively short, otherwise
he'll be way to shaggy.

A small dog could ride with me when I go on photo safaris. I want to adopt an
older "shelter" dog, so I don't have to worry about who will take care of it
when I'm gone.

I like the cats, especially Ralf's goofy "Zenobe".

Re: August PUG is up!

2019-08-07 Thread P. J. Alling
He's an American Cocker Spaniel, I'm not sure that I can recommend one.
The breed can be quite active, (kind of an understatement).  On the
other hand it is one of the breeds that you can find fairly easily as a
rescue.  He is a great friend, and now that he's older had mellowed
quite a bit.  He really needs to be groomed every three to four months
to keep his fur relatively short, otherwise he'll be way to shaggy.

I've been thinking about getting a small, shaggy dog and that looks
like it might be what I'm looking for ... the "shaggy" part anyway.
Can't tell from the photo how small (or large) it is.

A small dog could ride with me when I go on photo safaris. I want to
adopt an older "shelter" dog, so I don't have to worry about who will
take care of it when I'm gone.

I like the cats, especially Ralf's goofy "Zenobe".

Re: More critters from Moss Landing

2019-08-07 Thread Alan C
We had the American Bronze at first & later the Beltsville Small Whites
(which are really just an albinistic form). The latter are the best for
eating - the others get too big. They were easy to sell live to the
locals. Haven't seen turkeys in SA except the imported frozen ones at
Christmas but I suppose there are some. Chicken, about 50/50
local/imported, is the most popular & cheapest meat in SA.

There are Pentax users in SA getting good results with the Bigma but
more use the 150-500 because the Bigma is rather heavy for H/H shooting.
Probably not for a big, tough guy like you mind you!

I'm going down there again NEXT Wednesday, 15 Aug. Full moon rises about 10

When I went down there in July, I didn't know you needed a parking permit for
the beach (Friday before Memorial Day thru Labor Day). The office that issues
the permits closes at 5:00pm local time. I got there at 5:30pm, so I wasn't
allowed to get out of the car to get a better angle.

Now I know.

I'll do a better job next time. I'll get there before the office closes and get
a parking permit. I'll be able to get out of the car, walk around to frame them
with the sunset and with the full moon.

The horses are amazing. They're descended from Spanish Colonial Mustangs
abandoned along the outer banks and/or horses that managed to swim ashore from
Spanish shipwrecks on the shoals off of Cape Fear and Cape Hatteras.

North Carolina has been struggling to protect them since the 1980s.

When the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984, the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service labeled them an invasive species (even though they've
been there since the 1500s, predating the USF by 350+ years) and wants to
exterminate them.

North Carolina Congressional Representatives have repeatedly introduced a bill
for protection of the wild horses on Currituck Banks

Thanks, Dan.

Phoenix & now Tiger. Our remaining cat, 17 year old Sooty, is hanging on
by a thread - also kidney problems. Rather sad, this aging story.
